Commander Cockings' vfx is absolutely amazing work. It really adds depth to the story to make it feel like this wasn't filmed in someone's basement, even though it very well could have. The story of a Captain living in her worst nightmare of sacrificing her ship to save her crew was very well done too
This was done pretty well but it could've used more background context I think. At the very least if you're going to show the end first and then the beginning, you should show where everything went wrong and show why the ship is now locked into a collision course with the sun. A good job. Loved the saucer separation.

Great new short, Sam! Thrilled to see Alexa Brown back, she was amazing in "The Holy Core" and its terrific to see more of her character fleshed out. Music really evoked the era perfectly. It was awesome to see the Nebula-class separate a well - very cinematic.
Great story and VFX. And loved the inclusion of the saucer separation. The route during the saucer separation was a bit confusing however: during the separation the drive section continued to be on route to the star, but the saucer directed away, but later on the saucer was on course to the star again. So... why was the separation done in the first place? Only because of the EPS fluctuation? If so then what happened to the drive section? A bit more information would have been nice here. 😅
I got the impression she was trying everything to save the ship. I am guessing because they were talking about "gravimetric" eddies that the mass was important. They probably stayed deliberately vague. "Star Trek" is not hard sci-fi: using technobabble to solve problems. Normally in an episode the invent a second technobable term to solve the problem though.
Nicely done! Eloquent actress with good presence, true-to-Trek sense of exploration in the face of risk, and beautiful work by Cockings in rendering beauty shots of the Nebula class, including a great visual answer to one of the big burning questions about that ship design!

Great film and good special effects….with one exception, when the saucer separated from the rest of the ship the scene showed the underside of the saucer section and if Im not mistaken there were lifeboats still in place meaning that not all the lifeboats were launched since the lifeboat cradles would have been empty spaces but the scene shows the lifeboats are still in place.

Pretty well done and surprised Trekyards had a hand in it. That said I agree some feedback from the crew would probably fit the second half of the episode and more visuals of the ship having some issues as it drifted towards the star, like an impulse engine flickering or some debris to help get a sense of the gravity eddies but nothing too catastrophic. Minor details. Still this feels like another tale from the fleet, well done.

Hi Jose, all of it was explained in the last scene. Everything that Captain Keller says they don't want to happen does. So, there was a solar flare which damaged the ships navigational systems. This caused the helm to be locked on a tradjectyy towards the sun. Even after hours of fixing they couldn't, so they decided to a risk manoeuvre to save the ship BUT it had a low chance of sucesess so they had to launch the escape pods before they were too close to the star to survive. They did so and tried a manual power shunt to one impulse unit, this did alter their trajectory but it also fried main EPS conduits which means they lost all their other "save the ship" options. Plan B was to saucer separate and see if that manoeuvre could change the trajectory of the star drive and not be taken hold of by the gravity. This worked but not enough...because of that there was nothing they could so so she abandoned the saucer...but knowing the crew was safe. Its all in there in, in universe dialogue :D Thanks for watching.

@@SGUDistantHope Great acting, nice ship porn, and good job with integrating backgrounds. Agree with others in that other voices would help a lot and I'm still a bit lost as to why the ship had to be abondoned...
@@RedRosa Thanks! And fair enough with having Lt Drizel say something ^^. It would only have been "Yes sir" lol. Well, the dialogue at the end the "lets hope this doesn't happen"...is exactly what happens. A solar flare, the shields cant cope, it damaged navigation system and the ships course is locked in moving towards the Star, after hours of trying to fix it the gravity of the star takes hold and the Vigilance is moving faster and faster at the Star. They decide the chances of their plan saving the ship are small, so save the crew first and then try the plan. The Plan causes EPS conduits to be damaged and even with an attempted trajectory change by a impulse engine hack...doesn't work. Next plan, see if ejecting the saucer allows for a the trajectory to be changed enough, not enough and the saucer also has to be abandoned. She tried every plan but none succeeded she saved the crew...and she can mourn for the ship late.
Nearly perfect in every way. I do wish you would format these for widescreen television ratio though. Movies are forced to be masked because they are in a different ratio and have to be converted. These movies are never going to be shown in that format, so it makes sense to use all of the real estate possible. Artificially masking it does not make it seem more cinematic, it just seems like kind of a unnecessary conceit that just makes the picture smaller and as if we are peering through a postal slot. Just as you wouldn't artificially add scratches and pops as if it were actual film, no reason to ratio it as it would be in a theatrical release. Or add his to the soundtrack, we have these wonderful tools now, it makes sense to format it to match the equipment. Modern TVs were created to create theatrical experience at home, no reason to artificially try to enhance it and vertically shrink the beautiful work you have shown on all the screens it will be viewed on. Everything else is wonderful just please reconsider this minor thing. For TOS I appreciate when they go to the old standard 5x4 because of how the original was shot, for TNG when they converted it for widescreen it made for some very awkward cropping, but since you're starting from scratch you are free to use pristine digital formats that perfectly fill the high definition TVs that most of us have so that seems like the logical way to go. Great job!
@@SGUDistantHope Actress who played Keller (ref to Helen by any chance?), was a tour de force! Held my attention by herself for several minutes. So, why did she want to destroy the ship, what was it's 'danger'?
very well done. I really wish I had the Special effects skills... When something that terrible has happened...and you've had to focus for so long without panicking..the fact she saved ever single crew member is a miracle and she has to look at the positives while she finally gets to breath for the first time. I'm sure a few hours later she would have been upset and feeling the loss.
I confess being dense-why was such.a drastic measure needed to abandon ship and lt fly into that star. Since Icarus is mentioned is it cuz that star interact with the ship in a way causing the crew to leave it behind?
I don't get it. Why did they use escape pods to leave the saucer section, when they could have simply used the turbo-lift before separation? And why is she flying the saucer into the star? I appreciate the work that goes into creating the CG effects, costume, background, and compositing, but the film is just an actor spouting techno-babble in front of a green screen , and some cg ship animation.
I don't get it , some odd gravimetric sensor readings in the very beginning of entering the system is supposed to be the full explanation why they had to abandon a perfectly good Federation Starship , plot hole the size of yellow sun .
Hi Bob, I very carefully design these films to not have plotholes, I make sure i think everything out. The story in a nut shell. Everything that Captain Keller says they don't want to happen does. Hi Rufus! Thanks so much! Was there anything about the film you enjoyed particularly? You say that but Kirk got the Enterprise A after loosing the 1701. Picard got the Enterprise E after loosing the Ent D and Sisko got a second Defiant after he lost the first. Not only were they all still in active service but replacement ships were quick to appear. This event was a unplanned and freak of nature event. Keller is a proven scientific captain besides this and she did indeed get another ship quick quickly...and then she actually requests transfer to a smaller class of ship by the time we get to the time of insurrection.
@@SGUDistantHope The tone of the film was spot on for TNG, I miss that tone as opposed to current crap passing as ST. As for Kirk, he was a legend in his own time. Janeway admired and referenced him stating that was a different time, a golden era, where captains flew by the seat of their pants, almost as if she was saying she envied that period, as opposed to her time where she had to follow more strict protocols. Don't worry, I will be happy to see Captain Keller again.
I don't quite understand what is happening here. The captain has apparently ordered the crew to abandon ship and stayed aboard to ... well, no idea actually. She attempts to correct the course (into the star? is that wise?) and then when that doesn't work (?) she separates the saucer and that doesn't work either (because why?) and then takes to the shuttle. So shuttles and pods can get away from the star but the engineering section and saucer can't? And if it was going to be close why not separate the saucer earlier? I just can't make this make sense. Production quality is good as is the acting but I'm left wondering what I saw.

Instantly my favourite trek fan film now. The nebula is so neglected.
Thanks Mikey! Lovely comment!
can you speak as to why this is now your favourite? We would love to know!
@@SGUDistantHopeit’s got a nebula class as the main ship. We need more nebula lol. Although I feel like if it’s going to use a galaxy bridge, the generations refit one seems a bit more appropriate;)
Like it. Simple and clear knowledge of star trek spirit.
Nicely done :)
Great Work! Just as expected from your prior films...
Thanks Charlie! We do try hard to make something fun for everyone and to make things not seen before!
Was there anything about the film you particularly enjoyed or stood out to you? :D
All I want is for DIS/PIC to have one properly looking ship-flyby, but apparently that's too much to ask.
The level of detail is fantastic. The ship silhouettes on the LCARS are the Nebula class not the Galaxy. Well done.
First to be second! Beam me up! Great movie thanks!
very nice😎
Gerat Filme. Nice Stroy.
Thank you so much! Anything in the film you enjoyed specifically?
@@SGUDistantHope Yes the actor of the Captain great. What a great Modell of the Nebula-Classe
Are you all in Indy? I'm in Kentucky and we do Star Trek fan films too! I've really enjoyed catching up on your past episodes!
Hi Hilda, were based in the UK! Thanks! Any of the old films you specifically enjoyed?
@@SGUDistantHope aw, ok! I'm fond of a long way home. It was the first episode I watched and I thought very well done!
Keep them coming.
This was pleasant to watch.
Well done!!!!
Thank you so much! Did you enjoy anything specifically about it?
Great job!
yea!
Yeh is right! What did you think about the film?
@@SGUDistantHope Actress who played Keller (ref to Helen by any chance?), was a tour de force! Held my attention by herself for several minutes.
So, why did she want to destroy the ship, what was it's 'danger'?
💥STUNNING💥~-~-~-~-~-~🔫
Is it me, or is the Nebula bridge module backwards?
very well done. I really wish I had the Special effects skills... My brother and I want to make a fan film next year and I really need a wells class and a small time/scout ship, but we haven't done any funding yet. I do 3d printing and I'd willingly trade a 3d print of those ships for the obj or stl file of them. I just made a 3ft long Enterprise A.
this is really well made for what appears to be by one person
Thank you! Yes and no.
I had a really talented team of 3D modelers/creators that got me all the assets i needed which could then finish off and make a film with. Standing on the shoulders of talented folks...and putting the long hours into actually making the film itself myself!
Was there anything about the film you particularly enjoyed?
We have several more Trek films on the channel and all in different eras of Trek!
@@SGUDistantHope "Was there anything about the film you particularly enjoyed?"
just the quality really, it was well presented
Very nice
Thank you! Anything in particular you enjoyed about it or stood out?
YES well done ONE character and played convincingly
Her curiosity got her ship destroyed. Very strange production.
Great 👌😊💕 love it.
Thanks so much Mikel! Was there anything about it you particular enjoyed or stood out to you?? :D
Whether Star Wars or Star Trak only from fans you get what you want The CEOs of Disney and CBS are fired. Really well made film. Star Trak as it should be. 😃👍
for someone who just lost their ship, she's awful happy ... I'd be pissed
Well done :D
Thanks so much Kara! Anything about the film you particularly enjoyed or thought worked well?
Thank you Sir very nice.
Thank you William! Was there anything you liked in particular? I'm really eager to hear viewers thoughts more specifically! :D
Story mostly. Of course the ship was great. I felt her helplessness. Kudos captain
Hi Bob,
I very carefully design these films to not have plotholes, I make sure i think everything out. The story in a nut shell.
Everything that Captain Keller says they don't want to happen does.
So, there was a solar flare which damaged the ships navigational systems. This caused the helm to be locked on a tradjecty towards the sun. Even after hours of fixing they couldn't, so they decided to a risk manoeuvre to save the ship BUT it had a low chance of success so they had to launch the escape pods before they were too close to the star to survive.
@@SGUDistantHope , Just for sake of clarity I am a fan of Star Trek and I was impressed with your set and special effects heck the uniform was not that bad either ,
And I'm quite aware of the restrictions that have been put on Star Trek fan films as well.
The explanation you wrote out to me reads within Star Trek , So ..the time line were that explanation can be found , So I can rewatch the video as it was intended .
Samuel Cockings strikes again!!!
Great acting and dialogue. Still unclear why all hands had to abandon ship.
Awwe! Feel good Star Trek? Ok!
Love it
Thanks John!! Did anything specifically stand out to you that you liked? :D
Forgive my ignorance, but what exactly happened to the ship?
Hi Rob, all of it was explained in the last scene. Everything that Captain Keller says they don't want to happen does.

Ace is the only word to describe it
Thanks so much!! Anything in particular you liked the film, if you had to pick somethin?
What year does this take place?
Enjoyed it, well done. But, not sure if we will see Keller again after losing her ship, that normally is a career ender...
Say, is this a ship of the Valkyries?
Beautiful speaking voice.
