I would rush home from high school to watch each new episode. I did this for years. My mother didn't understand my attraction, so I asked her to watch it. She understood why I loved it, since I was -- and still am -- a fan of horror films. Nothing will ever equal or surpass its power over the weekly television audience.

I was only 5 years I'm 55 now but I remember coming home from kindergarten with my older sister and our friend Jackie and run to her house go down into her basement and watch Dark Shadows I remember being scared but I loved it.

Man o man did we live this show back in Oklahoma and then moving to Md. As a kid I couldn't get enough of this show and now I want the whole DVD catalog because this was the best soap opera of all times !!!

I ran home from school to watch this at 3:30pm mon-fri. I got out of school at 3:10pm and it took exactly 20 minutes to run home 1 mile from my school. Best crazy scary show ever at a kid.

My older sister and I ran home from school for this every day and loved it: I was 6 and watched every minute except when Quentin changed into the werewolf: I hid behind the chair until my sister told me he was done and I could come out: also had a bat fall off the roof of the school: another kid picked it up and chased me with it: I became hysterical: they had to call my sister out out class to calm me down and find out what happened: my sister said “ go take that bat away from the other kid and she’ll be fine!” 😂just knew I was gonna be a vampire!😂🤣

benny lawrence : Gotta say I'm kinda impressed and maybe a bit jealous you went to a grade(?) school that had bats hanging out on it. I have a slightly school & Dark Shadows related bat story, but it was college.
Dark Shadows was rerunning on a local station at 6pm, it was late October so it was already dark, as I was hurrying home past campus gates to get to the tv. As I passed some local teens on the corner, a bat flew off campus over our heads towards a nearby church tower. Startled, one of the the guys who apparently didn't know there were bats nearby, started yelling about where'd it come from, why was it there... Under the circumstances I felt an overwhelming urge to say, with my back to them in my best Lugosi voice: "Zit ees close to Halloveen! Maybe eet eyes a vampyre?" I knew it was corny, but y,know, late October, bat, Dark Shadows state of mind - I braced myself to be called corny, silly, stupid, whack etc. but got no response. I turned around to see they,d taken off running in the other direction. It was probably the late October night and the bat that did it; but latter when buying candy for Trick or Treaters, I felt I'd earned a bag or two for myself.

OMG!!! I remember when this was television taped live in the early 1970's in color. my mother would be getting me ready for school and by the time we were to be walking out the door, Dark Shadows would begin. wow! memories... I never could understand what the big deal was about this series. And since I always felt depressed as a child when soap operas came on each afternoon which my mom and grandma watched, in B&W with the ever-present dark background. And so I avoided this genre.
Only recently for some reason I got an urge to check it out after watching some Elizabeth , and was immediately hooked and understood its popularity. Great writing, great dramatic pauses and stings, and great acting.

Looking at the Pilot Episode, it reminds me of Foxworth Hall in Flowers In The Attic, then when Victoria needs to go into Town and needs a Taxi Burt Devlin is nonchalant. She has Coffee & Pie at the Diner and co-incidentally that is the same thing that Tom Makris/Michael Rossi had in the Book Version of Peyton Place.

Helene Papageorge : When, as a kid, I found out that Bangor, where Barnabus would allegedly be "away on business" all day long, was a real place it creeped me out almost as much as when I found out Sleepy Hallow was a real place.
Still, Collins' Port is just one of many, er...interesting sights attributed to Maine. A few Stephen King stories take place there. Kinda makes you wonder.
If I ever visit, I must remember to pack my crucifixes, holy water, garlic, silve,r and wooden stakes.

How ironic that the character of Victoria Winters would be marginalized in just over a year as the supernatural characters took over the show. Soon after, her character would be dropped entirely.

The actress Alexandra who played Victoria Winters quit the show due to being pregnant and wanting to be a stay at home mother. Alexandra did a interview admitting that she wanted to concentrate on motherhood and didn't want to be an actress anymore.

***** You have to remember that the original theme of the show was of a non-supernatural nature. Sure, some intrigue and mystery here and there, even a murder or two, but the original theme was still about a young woman trying to find her identity in a bleak mansion and coastal town. Sort of like a Jane Eyre quality. Even the original background music was more elevator-soap opera style than it was eerie. The character of Victoria was tailored to that original theme, and she never blended in well with the supernatural aspect. The original theme intended to reveal her as the out of wedlock daughter of Elizabeth Stoddard. But when the show shifted to the supernatural theme, and the target audience of housewives was replaced by school kids, that proved to be a bit too racy. So the producers instead came up with the plot that Victoria was a reincarnation of her eighteenth century self (which fit in well with her obsession about the past), and she was ultimately whisked back to her own time (and out of the show). The really sad part is that it was revealed in a later episode that Victoria had been forced to jump to her death off Widows Hill by the Leviathans soon after going back to her own time! What a grim and inglorious ending for whom was supposed to be the star of the show!

Michael Anderson : There's been a few attempts, but no one seems to be able to get it quite right as of yet. In the meantime, both Katherine Leigh Scott (Maggie Evans/Jossette) & Laura Parker (Angelique) have written Dark books that continue the stories.
