Respect to the whole TOPAZ team who have worked on these amazing products. I dont think we thank the creators enough.
yes totally!
Topaz Denoise & Sharpen have resurrected a lot of my "too-sentimental-to-delete" photos from many years ago. Great products. Cheers & thanks, Jim.
thanks Jack and yes they are great for that sort of shot for sure!
Jim, agreed, this Sharpen Ai update jumped the product waaay ahead of the previous version. Good job on showing off the new Auto triggers and masking. Thanks!
thanks much Jer!
Sharpen and Denoise are two of Topaz’s best products. For the most part they do an excellent (occasionally jaw dropping) job. Biggest issue is the cost to get started on these products. Topaz used to have a great free upgrade for life policy that justified the high upfront expense, but I understand they are reverting to an annual fee for major updates model. If that keeps their business viable then great, I just hope they don’t price themselves out of the market.
yes I agree on all points Andy - thanks for stopping by!
@@JimNix I also hope they focus a bit more on Studio too as they haven't release a significant update in a while, and that thing as a lot of potential.
@@andyhughes073 agreed, it's a great product too and could be an amazing product with a few more additions and updates
Always learning, your explanation to each process makes it easy to understand. Thanks.
thank you so much Garvin!
JIm, Thanks for the recommendation. I had been looking at this software but I wasn't sure about how well it really worked. I purchased it using your link.
thanks so much and it works well in my experience, and I hope you get a lot out of it!
Yes sir, it truly is amazing. Saved several of my early photos with it. That and DeNoise too.
yes DeNoise AI is also amazing!
I’ve been using the update since it came out and in a word: astonishing! I agree, the Stabilization tab is incredible, and I’ve got IBIS in my camera body! I use Sharpen AI as a plugin in Luminar.
thanks Mark and yes astonishing is a good word for it, I appreciate you stopping by!
Does it actually work as a plug-in in Luminar 4? I also have Topaz Mask AI and love it as well.
@@vincepalmer9518 yes it works as a plugin to Luminar for me
@@vincepalmer9518 Yes. I have Sharpen AI, Denoise AI and Studio 2 as plugins for Luminar. I've had it since L3. Tech Support can show you how to set it up. Was pretty easy for me and I"m no computer genius :}, but that was a while ago. It carried over from L3 to L4s. Good luck!
Jim Nix, I have become serious in my photography. Watching all kinds of videos for ideas and learning photo-editing skills/software. At first your style was not for me. The last few videos I have watched from you have been really well done. Not too long and with good information, showcasing some of the software that I have purchased. Thanks for your efforts, I subscribed (which I hardly do), and look forward to your work! Pierre
thanks for watching Pierre and hope you enjoy my other vids, I appreciate the sub 👍🏻
Amazing, I already saved some of my "unusable" shots with these tools from Topaz.
Including ones that are shot with a lens that broke that day and wouldn't render perfectly sharp anymore. I might get that lens out of the showcase again to experiment with it.
Thank you Jim, with your code plus the holiday offer Topas Labs has right now, I got the whole utility pack for a price that makes me feel like a thief 😅.
awesome, glad to hear it is working out for you already, and glad you got such a great deal!
excellent demo!
thanks for watching!
Great video sir. Wish you would have shown the results of masking the two ladies though.
Thanks man!!
thanks for watching!
I am impressed with Sharpen AI to sharpen/stabilize hand held camera images shot in low light. Should help with unstabilized lenses like primes to add more crispness to edges. Great demo video!
thanks much Adrian and yes Sharpen AI is pretty impressive - I will surely use it in future videos too, it's very helpful and versatile too 😁
Well done, Jim. Sharpen AI is one of several very valuable plugins from Topaz Labs. Until they added masking capabilities, I tended to run it in Topaz Studio 2.
thanks much Bob and yes I like all the Topaz products and the addition of masking is super!
Thank you, just download a trial version. I am using older PC (8GB Ram) on windows 10. It did a very nice job as a Luminar 4.3 plug-in. However, it did take some time to complete the process. Note: I am also using Topaz AI Noise trial as a Luminar Plug-in. I can only afford one I think Sharpen will be one I get.
thanks Larry and have fun with whichever you choose, both are great plugins!
Just ordered Topaz Sharpen AI using your link and discount code. I think this is the last piece I need for my photos editing at this time. Using it with Luminar 4 and Topaz Denoise AI, both of which I love. All I need to figure is how to incorporate them properly when Luminar AI comes out. Thank you for your valuable help.
thanks so much Mark, I appreciate that and hope you have a lot of fun and successful edits with your "toys"! 😁
Thanks for the comparison. To help your future videos I'd recommend hitting "view" at the top and you can have a side by side comparison for before and after. Easier to see the changes that way. 👍
yep good idea thanks
My images look worse in the preview than the original. The image I am trying to sharpen has already been edited - should Sharpen AI only be used before editing? (This is the only reason I can think of)
Hmm, that seems odd to me but maybe the timing comes into play. I tend to do basic corrections first (contrast, highlights, shadows, etc) and then use Sharpen AI, and then do final touch ups or creative adds. That works well for me.
Excellent explanation again Jim, I have all four of the Topaz AI plugins, they are amazing, a touch of Black magic I think.
thanks much and yes a fair bit of magic it seems!
Tried it today. For me it's a mixed bag. Sometimes amazing but sometimes lacking.
When it works, it's better than anything else.
There are times when certain areas are over sharpened and other areas undersharpened.
thanks for sharing
It is an amazing piece of software but regrettably unless one has a very powerful computer and I mean very powerful, then waiting around for ever for the processing to take place is the order of the day.
Yes it can take a bit to process, esp if you have a large file. It's worth the wait IMHO but waiting is tough. Thanks for watching!
@@JimNix I am no expert but I believe the main cause is that it has been optimized to work with certain GPUs. If the software does not detect the specific GPU it then resorts to using the CPU and ordinary RAM to do its pixel by pixel processing and rendering which does take a long time.
@@lensman5762 yeah I bet you are right
Great video. FYI - you can use topaz mask, sharpen and denoise as plugins in Luminar.
thanks much for watching and yes I am aware, just didn't think to mention that here ;-)
Thanks again Jim. Your videos are always informing. I love Denoise AI and currently have the trial version of Sharpen AI. It's a pity that neither is available as a plugin for Luminar 4, at least not for the Windows version. Stay safe.
thanks much for watching and yes I hope that Luminar 4 for Windows will get plugins, it would make things easier for sure
My handheld 5DS R shots need both of Sharpen and DeNoise!
haha yeah I get that too sometimes
JIM-- I just down loaded Topaz Sharpen AI- I used your name Jim. Very easy to down load! Thanks Jim for your instruction- You are very sharp and knowledgeable! Randy B.
thanks so much Randy and have fun with it!
Thanks for the code. Just saved $24 upgrading to the utility. Already have and am in love with DeNoise.
thanks much and hope you enjoy it, and yeah DeNoise AI is amazing too
Thanks for the video. I have installed the update and it now runs much more smoothly on my Windows computer than the previous version.
Sharpen AI also works for me as a plugin in Luminar 4.3, but only if I click on cancel when I've started the plugin. I would be interested to know if other Windows users have had the same experience.
Glad it is running well for you, and being on a Mac I can't comment on the Windows side of things but hopefully someone here will see this and share their input.
Hi Jim, after viewing your video I've just purchased Topaz Sharpen AI. Thanks for the tips. When using it in conjunction with Luminar 4.3 would you advise using it before or after processing with Luminar ? Your feedback appreciated.
hi Peter and thanks hope you enjoy it - I do basic corrections in Luminar, then go to Sharpen AI, then back to Luminar for anything else (fun, creative, color, etc) - I have a workflow video about this coming in a few days, but that's the gist of it
Hi again Jim ...... looking down further into the comments my question has been answered i.e. start in Luminar with basic edits, go over to Sharpen AI to sharpen, and then back to Luminar for touch up or creative edits.
@@petertorokfalvy6493 yep that seems to work for me
Hey Jim...If you do a lot of printing of photos check out Epson's new plan called Ready Print. For a monthly subscription, they provide a printer and ink.
oh wow that's pretty interesting, basically a subscription printing service, very cool - thanks for sharing
No doubt Topaz AI software is one of the finest pieces of software out there. I mainly use Topaz Denoise AI to clean up my bird images. It's like having a new expensive telephoto lens.
Once in a while you'll run into an arrogant head that thinks he can do it all in photoshop and lightroom. Sure, go ahead and spend hours editing your photos. With AI technology it saves me time and does an amazing job way better than other software's "sharpen" tool.
yep I agree this aI works really well and is a massive time saver as well as frustration saver
I would love for Topaz and others to get on the iOS bandwagon. ON1 has seen the light so to speak with their recently launched ON1 360, now if only Cap1, Luminar, Topaz and DXO would join the party...
yes I agree, it would be awesome to see how this could be done on a mobile device
As always, very useful, thanks Jim. I just updated after watching your video. It's strange but I find stabilize seems to work best even with tripod shots, no idea why!! Looking forward to trying it with the updates and looking forward to your next video...

Hi Jim. As my Luminar guru, I have learned so much from you. But I’m just not seeing it on Topaz. I downloaded the trial this morning and my initial tests are saying that its pretty hard to notice any discernible difference in my images after Topaz. I just don’t see that any minor improvement is worth the time taken in doing the edit, or the money spent on this software.
Hey no worries, I just share things I find useful. If you don't see the value, don't spend your money, that would be wasteful. Thanks for watching, I appreciate it!
Hey Jim. In my opinion, for what it's worth, for images out of focus, I like Topaz Gigapixel better.
Good to know Tim. I tried Gigapixel when it came out but never really felt like it did much for me, whereas Sharpen, DeNoise, Adjust and Studio all work wonders in my experience. But if it works well for you, that's excellent and I am glad to hear it. I may have to try it again someday.
AI sharpen in the next Luminar??? hmmm. They sure have been leaning in to the AI world. Nice review of what looks to be a great product.
Well, this is made by Topaz, not Skylum, so it won't be in Luminar. But it is an amazing product and Topaz has really done a lot of AI as well.
Jim Nix I was just wondering if Luminar might add some AI sharpening in a future release, like they have added other AI tools.
@@stephenwoodburn2970 oh right, sorry I misread your comment and who knows, it is possible

Hello Jim. Can Topaz Sharpen AI be used as a stand alone and/or with the windows 11 photo app? Thank-you.
It definitely works as a standalone, but not sure about W11 since I only have a Mac.
Thank you very much. I’ll try it.
I want more creators to recommend topaz to put denoise and sharpen AI in an same app. If many creators talk about this there is a high chance that they will do it. Say your thoughts on this
hmm, not a bad idea, makes a lot of sense, just never thought about I guess but I like it
@@JimNix So consider doing this. I am pretty sure that you will make a video on Denoise AI. So please add this recommendation in that video and ask the viewers to vote on it. These sorts of metrics is something that the companies like topaz might be interested in..

Between Topaz and NIK tool which is your personal favourite on sharpening ??? Can Topaz be added as a plug in to Luminar 4.3 ?
Yes Topaz can be used as a plugin from Luminar, and admittedly I have not used Nik Sharpening in a LONG time so I would go with Topaz Sharpen AI, plus I like the fact that it has AI built in.

I missed this fact the first time I watched this video that it is 2 years old and the $20 discount has been long since gone.
Oh yeah, it is 2 yrs old at this point. But they do offer sales somewhat often so if you are interested just keep checking back on their site.
After finishing exporting the image is taking about 15-20 minutes.Luminar was slow, this is more and more slower than Luminar.
Yes modern AI-based tools seem to use a lot of resources.
What's your pc configuration? seems way quick than mine with topaz sharpen
I am on a Mac, about 3-4 yrs old, 16gb ram. Nothing special. But yes the AI apps can run a little slow at times bc there is so much processing going on.
You applied these effects before all other editing? Usually I throw photos into DeNoise first, which includes it's own sharpening (that can be turned off).
This wasn't workflow-related, just a straight up demo of what it can do. I would likely do other things to the image prior to this step.
@@JimNix That makes sense. I've been giving this program a whirl, and I haven't yet gotten what I want out of it. I'll keep using it though, until I figure it out.
@@fenraven thanks and I am sure you will find it useful, it sure has made a difference in some of my shots
@@JimNix I bought it after using it on a photo of an egret which was taken pre-sunrise (dim lighting) while standing on a rolling dock. The results were astounding.
@@fenraven awesome, glad to hear that and yeah now I am zooming in to every pic for a much closer look LOL
Jim, great overview. I have noticed the sharpening has no effect on large raw files! I have to significantly downsize the files then apply the sharpening for the software to work. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Bob.
what size are we talking about here exactly? just making sure I don't end up buying and regretting later.
Hi Bob and I am not seeing that in my experience. I just tried something shot with my Sony A7r3 (42 MP, 85MB raw file) and it worked great. I am not sure what to suggest other than to contact their support team, I guess? I do notice that the results vary based on the mode that you choose, and sometimes they differ pretty significantly.
@@JimNix I shot with the Sony A7riv (61 MP) and used the photoshop plug-in and never saw an improvement . When I export the file as a jpg and reduce to 2 MP then run the Sharpening, the result is very good. I will take your advice and contact the support team.
@@bobdavies2075 hmm, well that would be a really large file, and obviously having to reduce to 2MP renders the software useless, so yes I think support is the best option for you.
Can you address where in the normal workflow of raw processing that this sharpening should be done? Does the software keep the changes within the raw file or must the completed edit be exported as a compressed file? Thanks.
It would export as TIFF for example. I would normally do some basic editing first, then this step, then likely some creative stuff if that was what I wanted to do.
Jim, would you recommend using this after editing a photo in Luminar 4 or before? Thanks
Good question and I think I would do basic edits in Luminar, then pop over here to Sharpen and then return to Luminar for touch up edits and and creative/color work that I want to do to the image.
@@JimNix Hi Jim, I wonder if I can export the sharpened image from topaz as kind of raw file that has all the dynamic range again to further edit in Luminar 3 and or Affinity Photo.
Thanks for the video, really helpful for deciding if I want to spend money on this or not.
@@Cheesesalad once you edit it, it is no longer raw so you can export as a TIFF which is a great format for continued editing
@@JimNix Thank you for the timely reply. You seem to make great content. Subbed. I'm off to buy this software now. This seems to be a great solution for my frustration with sometimes slightly shaky photos.
Thank you again.
@@Cheesesalad thanks for the sub and hope you have fun editing!
Gigapixel, Sharpen, Denoise, and JPEG to RAW all seem to do a lot of the same things. They have about 8 different apps. Very expensive if you buy them all. I find this marketing approach extremely irritating - they could have done all this with two or three apps at most. Have you tried any of the others?
They do have a lot of apps and it can get confusing, but I have several of them and find they work well. Mostly I use Studio, Adjust, Sharpen, DeNoise and Mask. I have not spent any time with the other ones.
Hi JIm! I have a couple of questions. When you use it as a pluging, what is the best moment to apply Sharpen AI? if it is at the beginnig, do you lose information when you convert to tiff to continue with editing? Thanks
Hi Carlos and I tend to do my basic adjustments first (Exposure, Contrast, Highlights, Shadows - that sort of thing), and then I will do Sharpen AI. I do not see any noticeable loss when converting to a TIFF To send it over to Sharpen AI. It looks just fine to me. Then after sharpening, I will do any color adjustments or creative edits. Thanks and HTH.
@@JimNix Thx
@@carlostamesg you're welcome
too bad that Luminar 4 is limited at using plugins or vice versa. I noticed today that Aurora 2019 can use Luminar (i.e. the 2018 version) as a plugin but not Luminar 4. Well, the world is quite bright with all these products and interoperability would be nice but we can do without.
yes Wolfgang I am hopeful that these will all interoperate better in the future but there are some workarounds for now - thanks for watching and hope you are well!
Hi JIm, really interesting thanks for the demo. Can I ask does it edit both jpeg and raw files and, if so, after you edit a raw file does it save as a raw file or convert to jpeg? Either way, I use Luminar 4 so would I use Sharpen AI first, save the edits and then import into Luminar or would I do all my Luminar edits first save and import into Sharpen AI? (Just not sure how it would work workflow-wise). Thanks
Yes it handles raw files too. I use it from Luminar so it comes back as a TIFF (I think, not in Luminar at the moment). I just started using this, so I think I would start in Luminar with basic edits, go over to Sharpen AI to sharpen it etc, and then back to Luminar for touch up or creative edits.
Far as I know once a file has been processed by any software it's no longer a raw file it's a processed file. Sharpen AI does allow you to save it as jpg, tiff, etc.
@@boatman222345 Many thanks
@@boatman222345 yes exactly, once you edit you cannot save in raw but rather another format, TIFF is my preferred
Jim Nix Maybe you can answer a question I have. I know that folks recommend doing only basic edits before using Sharpen AI, Denoise, etc. My problem is I have many already fully processed images I would like to use on these images. My plan is to make a virtual copy of each image and the reset the image to basic defaults + few basic edits. Once I've reprocessed the image with Sharpen AI I then plan to copy and past the full edit setting on to the virtual copy just sharpened with Sharpen AI. Do you know if this would work?
Thanks, I will give it a try.
ok thanks
Jim, thanks for the tip on AI Enhance. After watching, I knew it would help my work flow, so I bought it. I used it on my current real estate photo shoot, great results. One issue I found that I'm hoping you have a work around for, I shoot raw, and when Enhance saved my files they were in .dng format. I brought them into Luminar4 for final touch ups. Luminar only showed black thumbnails and would not allow any edits. I brought the original raw files into Luminar and they were fine. I'm wondering if the large file size of the .dng had something to do with it. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks for the great content.
Hmm, that sounds different than my experience Carl. I can send over a file from Luminar to Sharpen AI and it comes back fine, allowing me to further edit. I'm not sure what to suggest here. I can try a few more experiments and see if anything changes, but not sure how to help, sorry.
@@JimNix thanks, it would help if I got the name of the program correct ;-) In your work flow, do you typically start with Sharpen then move to Luminar?
@@carlmeibergen8149 I am still experimenting with workflow, but right now am starting with basic edits/corrections in Luminar then over to Sharpen AI for it's benefits, and then back to Luminar for any touch up edits or creative additions
Damn, you may have made me spend $.. This version is a great upgrade. Im on an older imac so it takes some time to process versus what you are doing but worth it on images I want to recover. Biggest issue is they don’t work well with On1 Raw 2020 even though it supposed to. But I found a workaround where I go from On1 Raw 2020 to Topaz Studio 2 then to Sharpen AI then back. I find that I am using it as the first step in the workflow.

Hi Jim, with the lady in the red cloche hat, couldn't you get equal results in Luminar 4, Jim. The soft skin feature whilst enlightening the eyes, wasn't in my opinion as good in Topaz. I opine from my own comparisons: if just specific area is to be sharpened ie by masking Topaz works well eg just the model's eyes. I haven't tried it but if in a group shot the clothing rather than the faces was to be sharpened or vise versa, can there be individual separate areas of sharpening be brushed in please?
Thanks you for this helpful video.
I don't think L4 would give me quite the same as this but haven't done an in depth comparison. I always find that apps made specific purposes excel at that purpose vs general editing apps. And yes you can brush in edits in Topaz. Thanks!
@@JimNixHi Jim, thank for letting me know. It would be interesting to see the difference in a video. I forgot to ask: I opine, that on one of your recent videos, it seemed you were able to use the Topaz Sharpen A1 as a plugin to Luminar 4? If so, do you know whether it is only for Mac O/S, please? When clicking plugins in Luminar 4, it just seems to show Luminar as a plugin for Adobe programs, rather than programs such as Topaz being a plugin for Luminar (similar for Aurora HDR 2019). Yes, it is amazing. But the question is - whether is it a still photography whether only artificially produced image? I think producing images using AI is not a photography it is only an illusion.
No worries, everyone has their own opinions about all of this stuff.

hi Marc and yes the processing can take a bit at times, depending on the image etc - perhaps turn off preview until you are done moving sliders in case that speeds things up
I'd be interested to know if you took the same images and process the sharpening in L4? If not could you? Then let us see the difference if any. I know it won't be Ai but if the result is good then my wife could have another piece of jewellery lol.
haha but wouldn't you rather have more toys? I can check that out but not sure I will do a video about it, unless I can find something really useful in the comparison
Really enthused after watching your (as always) great video, Jim. However, after I purchased Sharpen AI, I discovered it could not process CR3 files. Since I always shoot in RAW, I am unable to use it. Do you have any idea if Topaz will update their software to be able to process CR3 files? Thanks
Oh man I didn't know that, and of course I don't have any of those file types. I just looked in their FAQ help.topazlabs.com/hc/en-us/articles/360040442032-Sharpen-AI-Frequently-Asked-Questions and the 3rd question down addresses file types. It does not mention CR3 files and suggests converting to TIFF. Have you tried that? It should work. I know it is not ideal but I use TIFF a lot in other apps and generally am happy with how they look.
so it turns like in full HD
well it sharpens the photo but does not change the resolution or image quality
Huh WTF ? It worked pretty good BUT do they have a product that does the same thing for video and not just pictures ?
They have Video Enhance AI which is here: topazlabs.com/video-enhance-ai/ but I do not have the product
I purchased this today with your name, thanks. It does a great job of sharpening as you said in your video. However, when I mask a portion of the raw image to be sharpened, then save the image - and I have tried in several different formats - the image is corrupted in the saved version. It is saved in Black and White, with ⅔ of the image plus the original ⅓ tacked on the end. If I shapen the complete image it saves without the corruption. Have you saved an image that was masked and did you have the problem?
Hi Jean and thanks, and that sounds really weird. I have not had that happen to me. Not sure what to suggest other than to email their support team I guess? Sorry, wish I could offer more assistance here.
After a lot of research and experimenting, I believe it has to do with the raw file format from my Sony a7ii camera. I have to convert the raw file to a tiff, then it works. I always enjoy and learn from your videos, please keep them coming.
@@jeanhandwork9637 hmm, ok thanks for the update and that is good to know. I have that camera too, so will have to try and make sure it works for me.

I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong! I would love to keep it if it wasn’t so slow! And if I move it around, it blurs it again. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. It also won’t come on as a plungin when I click it from photoshop. Maybe because it’s a trial?
I am not sure about the plugin from PS part, but yes it can be slow. All these AI tools seem to really hog system resources. You can turn off the auto-update preview which will stop if from updating every time you move a slider, and hopefully that will help
Jim Nix I did do that as well! When I say slow it is slow. I bet it takes 3-5 min to process.
@@angiepierce617 gosh that is slow - mine is not that slow, maybe email their support and see if they have any suggestions?
honestly could be done in photoshop
Sure, you can sharpen in lots of apps. I find this one to work quite well tho.
Too many bugs in the program. Couldn't get it to work after dozens of hours trying. Asked for a refund and was promptly refunded.
Oh man, sorry to hear that. It has worked really well for me.
I just used the coupon code JIMNIX to purchase The Utility Bundle. Thanks. Stay safe.
thanks much and have fun with it!
I downloaded the trial version and it is desperately slow, I would never buy this program!
It does hog up some resources for sure but it is not that slow for me.
Good info, but you can breath every so often. You sound like those horrible infomercials, it slices, it dices... Chill.
haha I do get a little excited about this stuff, but it's so cool! 😁
paid advert obv. I own the software and its no better than lightroom.
oh really, interesting as it appears better to me
Topaz sharpen AI is not amazing and you should not buy it.
In sharpen mode it just sharpens like any other sharpening tool....you will have a hard time to say if it did a better or worse job than Lightroom.
In focus mode....no one uses focus mode because of the artifacts it creates. It's like stabilize mode on roids.
On stabilize mode sometimes it does a great job however it always fills the image with those vertical artificial lines.

I have no clue why it does that but it's kinda of a deal breaker for me.
I would recommend to buy Topaz Denoise AI instead since it doesn't have those lines.
As far as i can tell it uses the same algorithm with Topaz Sharpen AI on stabilize mode and you get the same result if you set noise suppression to 100 on Sharpen AI (which is generally a good idea if you use stabilize mode) and play a bit with the sharpening sliders.
On top of that since they added GPU support, Denoise AI it's much faster than Sharpen AI.
Sorry to hear that has been your experience with it, but appreciate you sharing with the community. And yes Denoise AI is a great product for sure.
Why you talking bull$#1t and nonsenses? For cheap money?
