Melvyn is a national treasure. If you were a child in the 60s and 70s, he was the epitome of the entertainer who worked his socks off to make you feel better and believe that life could be fun. Indeed, he and Windsor Davies put so much energy into It Ain't Half Hot Mum over 8 seasons, they could have powered the National Grid, and the program is still full of delight these decades later. A particular joy, however, is the episode in series 8 where Melvyn's character suddenly, and briefly, becomes the kind of fearsome soldier who would teach knife-handling to the SAS, and he is very convincing!
I new mr Hayes lived on the isle of wight i got on the train to london he got on with his wife and son when the train got to petersfield it broke down and 300 people had to wait for a train i saw mr hayes and went and spoke to him he was brill we had a chat and he shook my hand i shall always remember that but ive met a good number of stars theres never been a problem if your respectfull sir billy ive met many times but he remembers fans.
Melvyn is great! I first remember him from The Double Deckers.Carry on England is the only one I bother to watch and the only one I own. I work in a charity shop and someone brought in a couple of boxes of pre recorded VHS tapes, we only stock dvds, so I was asked to throw them all out into the skip, there was all the World at War episodes, which I kept for myself, and all the Carry On episodes, the only one I kept was Carry on England.
Such an interesting fella, would love to hear a real indepth interview with him, from his memories of parts he played like Peter Cushings younger self in Frankenstein and Daft Jamie in The Flesh and The Fiends to what it was like in the 70s as a straight guy playing it gay in a contentious time when many actually gay guys in the biz like Larry Grayson, John Inman etc. were being pressured to be open about it, he must've received some flak for that, a true pro tho, god bless him
I still watch "It ain't half hot mum!" when I feel this new world overwhelming, it lightens my mood. Comedy geniuses, real entertainment!
