      The case of Lindy Chamberlain which happened in my country, Australia, in the 1980s. She was accused of murdering her baby daughter Azaria, and was found guilty. It was years before she was released and the verdict of guilty overturned.
      The nation seemed more happy to believe that a mother had slit her baby's throat rather than a dingo had taken the baby from the campsite.

    Its hard to think of how horrible that would be to lose your significant other & unborn child only to be accused, arrested, tried & convicted. I would find it hard to maintain my sanity.

    I feel so bad for Dr. Shepard, his Son, and Family. I can't imagine the suffering. Especially knowing he was Innocent.

    Amazing how the court blithely ignores obvious evidence at the scene.

    80% of violent crimes against a spouse are carried out by the other spouse. The problem with this statistic is that investigations are conducted to allow the law enforcement to skew the evidence to fit their hypothesis of the what happened rather than letting the evidence lead them to the truth.

    If someone is found innocent, they should be entitled to recover the cost of their defense from the State. It is inequitable to have to go broke defending yourself against the unlimited power of the state.

    Shephards love letters may well have been handled by a considerable quantity of people, thus contaminating any saliva and therefore prospective DNA on the envelope glue...but the back of the stamp would've been fully protected I imagine.

      Law enforcement wanted an easy conviction. Dr S did not do it.

    Such a crime against an innocent man, thankful that in this day and age we have TRUE forensic science and don't just try people on public opinion. Poor Dr. Shepard's life was destroyed and we only get the one.

    Dr Sam Shepherd's case is such a sad one and a grave miscarriage of justice.
    The poor man died with his character and reputation forever tarnished. Yes, it eventually was solved but way too late.

      It’s NEVER TOO LATE to restore a persons Character at the very least. I’m sorry he had to die before his name could be cleared.

      I remember having watched a follow-up TV movie about the doctor some 25 years ago. After released from prison, the doctor went to visit his son, who was a nurse or a physician assistant or something. I think his son lived in Chicago. While his son was at work, the doctor had sex with his son's girlfriend. It was quite an eye-opening story.
      I think the movie that I watched is 'My Father's Shadow: The Sam Sheppard Story'. Peter Strauss was the actor playing the role of the doctor.

    As a non-American, a genuine inquiry: in cases like this, who pays for the dna, exhumation and all the rest-the state or the family? Also, how is the legality of evidence from old cases arranged-are the items availed should the family pays for private entities to re-investigate or are they classified as owned by the state and only to be accessed in case of officially opened cases. Always wondered how families manage to get old evidence re-examined…

    • @HellcatMad
      @HellcatMad 7 місяців тому +2

      Sometimes it's either or. Depends on the case.

    • @Bambisgf77
      @Bambisgf77 7 місяців тому +4

      @megs.hristova, the state pays for and owns any evidence. There is an officer who is always in charge of the case. The longer the investigation goes on the more likely there will be multiple officers. Its also thanks to this that fresh eyes and pressure from the family will sometimes turn up new evidence. This evidence or clue or theory must be strong in order to warrant an exhumation. Public opinion can and certainly does sway how cases are handled, especially during election years.
      Hope that helps!
