To think that in an interview years later he admitted to leaving because he was under tremendous stress to bring it to the role and he didn't think he had it in him. What a shame that he did not realize that he was absolutely made for this role and carried the character with such grace and believability that it would of been hard to decide who you liked better between Kelly and Sipowics. By that same token however, it makes you wonder if Sipowics would have been developed as the character he was had Caruso not left the show. I always loved the way Caruso portrayed Kelley. A real mans man of a character.

Found this today. Great selection of clips. Watched S1 and 2 in 1994. Unless, I missed it in your '265', any chance you could add the last 3 or 4 minutes of S1 ep 7 (Personal Foul) climaxing with the "Hey...(!)" scene exchange between Caruso, and Amy Breneman, closing the episode(?).

This is why I never took Bobby or any other replacements seriously. Caruso had the natural look and voice of a cop. His delivery was excellent almost a knock off of the 40s and 50s actors who were in Noir films. What hurt him was his own ego and cost him a lot although now he has made all the money he ever will need. He should have stayed on nypd for 3 seasons. Rarely is a show that good after 3 to 5 years anyway

And I agree that his leaving scene is one of the most powerful. It sucks how he wasnt written put but reading what happen behind the scenes it makes since why they wrote it that way.

What he brought to the table was a good relationship with Franz that showed on screen and thats about it.

Scott Morris IV is right. The episode is 1x8 Tempest In A C-Cup Personal Foul was the one there were one of Kelly's friends from at Y ended up punching another one and he died. Then Kelly had to arrest him and put him through the system and then help him out of it.
I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I'm glad he left NYPD Blue. Strange how he doesn't seem he's like he is from NYC, when he actually is! CSI Miami was a much better fit for him, as an actor.
I think Horatio Caine and John Kelly were basically the same characters. To me, Caruso's acting skills were questionable. He seemed to always be in a dazed, took a few too many valiums mood. It would've gotten old in NYPD blue and did get old in CSI Miami.

Carusos csi miami was number 1 several years running and in the top 10 for most of its run. Caruso got the last laugh, and his show buried blue in the ratings for a few years before it was canceled. Oh and Caruso only season had the most emmy nods too. Smits, Schroder, and the kid from save by the bell had better chemistry with Franz. For that I give them credit. Other than that Carusos kelly walks circles over them. A better written character plain and simple. John Clark is a rip off of kelly lmao 🤣
