- On a recent episode of ‘The Rewatchables’ podcast, special guest Quentin Tarantino shared his thoughts on ‘King of New York’ actor David Caruso, famously on ‘CSI: Miami.’ Quentin explains how he learned to appreciate the actor only after his starring role on the 90s ABC series ‘NYPD Blue,’ and how he strongly disagrees with the actor’s choice to leave the show.

@@justinamerican8200 You nailed it
@Patrick Whelpley Hahaha! Wiseau may finally get an Oscar, and during his acceptance speech I hope he gets Rick Rolled…
@Patrick Whelpley yup!
Well. If he gets this one, let's hope he never....
*you know.*
gives it up.
As a massive NYPD Blue fan, I think that Caruso was great, but I think that the Simone, Sipowitz storylines were spectacular
Jimmy Smits was way better
Though I would have loved to see Kelly and Simone meet
@tufDuffinchains agree on Jimmy, he and sipowicz were the best pairing imo.
@@paulinerobertson6836 without a doubt
Sipowicz was a more interesting character also as the show progressed
@@tufDuffinchains Sipowicz's character arc is one of the greatest TV stories of all time.
Tarantino and friends have nailed it.caruso was a major talent but a bad decision affected his career. I am glad they mentioned king of new York he was also very good in mad dog and glory with Robert De Niro
Paul Kitt Check him out in Michael Mann's Tv show Crime Story.
Paul Kitt mad dog and glory...couldn’t remember the name. Great movie 👍
It wasn't just a bad decision, he's an asshole which is why he hasn't worked since 2012. Nobody wants to work with him and I wouldn't either.
caruso wanted to be a lead, he wasn't a lead on NYPD BLUE
@@ektran4205He was pretty close to being a lead on Blue. But after he left the show became more of an ensemble.
In the movie Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, when Decaprio's character laments about leaving a good show for a " rinky dink movie career', I knew immediately Tarantino was referencing this guy.
If he didn't leave NYPD Blue and try at a film career, we would never have gotten the immortal line: "Be like David Caruso in Jade!"
Awesome reference.
I know exactly what you mean
While I don't get the reference, it reminds me of South Park where in order to make a baby jump off the plane, one of the characters tells it to imitate David Caruso's career
It's a line from 40 year old virgin. Highlights how dislikeable his character is in that film which is very average
I like jade lol there’s something about linda fiorentino…
I remember reading in Spy magazine back in '94 when Caruso left NYPD Blue, some associate of his told Spy magazine, "Huge egotism such as his could be accepted only in the entertainment industry. If he had a real job, he'd have his ass kicked every five minutes."
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Caruso pulled a Mclean Stevenson when he was on nypd blue. Thinks he was bigger than the show!
Hello, Larry
I wish i had the talent to string together all the opening "put the sunglasses on" lines in CSI Miami, It would be the comedy highlight of youtube!
I have the first season, and only that season, of NYPD Blue on DVD for the sole reason of Caruso's (and Milch's) brilliant John Kelly character and story arc.
rennmaxbeta Yup, stopped watching it after he left. Hear what Milch says about him on Dinner for 5. Their daughters are best friends & went to Yale together.
Quentin Tarantino you have an eye and Instinct for film like no one I have ever followed. I couldn't possibly agree more about the first season of NYPD Blue. I have never forgiven David Caruso for leaving that series. Dennis Franz character did contribute significantly as the relationship between Kelly and Sipowicz was a beautiful thing to watch unfold. Never enjoyed the series after that first year...
I always just kept turning the channel when that show was on. When I see Caruso I always think of the movie Rambo First Blood. When the sheriff held his head down and asked...do you see that man down there? He and I were friends when your mama was still wiping your nose! To me that defines his whole acting career.
Caruso was brilliant in King of New York. I remember at the time thinking that they should make a tv show starring his character, and then NYPD Blue exploded onto the screen.
Kiss of Death was a good film but Jade? Not even the great Caruso and Fiorentino could save it.
Kiss of Death is VERY underrated. Nic Cage is excellent in it too.
people forget, he was a cop in the first Rambo movie too👍
i liked caruso in kiss of death king of ny and in proof of life he was good
Kiss of Death was a great movie, one of my faves
He was good. But he was never great. He thought he deserved more than he got. The harsh truth that has never changed is Hollywood is big on looks for a leading man & David Caruso was never good looking enough to be a leading man
@@Stuart267 i agree totally he was never great
Quentin should hire him.
Your right tarantino would be the perfect director to get the most out of Caruso s acting ability
If he does I'll never go see it. Caruso is an asshole.
I read David Caruso retired from acting after finishing-up with CSI, IMDB doesnt show any acting/directing/producing credit for him since 2012.
@@markomalizani7751 He made a ton of money from being on CSI Miami so more power to him if he wants to retire.
@@joemckim1183 His life, i agree, he should do with his career onwards as he sees fit.
You never know what life will bring. Things still may have not worked out for NYPD Blue and who knows then. But because he did leave, we got his awesome character of Horatio on CSI:Miami for 10 seasons! I'm watching it right now. My favorite reruns detective show along with all the Law & Orders. Wish he would unretire.
CSI MIAMI lasted for 6 seasons
CSI Miami is by far one of the worst shows to ever appear on any TV, any where on this big blue marble we call home. Poorly written, over acted and poorly acted with lame story ideas written in crayon by a 6th grader. Please
CSI: Miami I root for the bad guys because Caruso is such arrogant, faux tough-guy putz on that show. You just want to punch his face every episode. The show is just mediocre in general. But Caruso overacting makes it so much worse.
@ektran4205 wrong it lasted 10 seasons
Caruso as John Kelly and Clooney as Dr. Ross were the two great dramatic characters on TV shows in the 1990s.
He's like that actress that left Star Trek TNG in one of the early seasons. Bad move. Little did she know that once you are on a show like that, you are in the sci-fi TV show casting club for life. One gig after another for as long as you want. A character actor's dream.
In fairness, Star Trek: TNG's first season was legitimately awful.
It's because she had to stand on the bridge if she had a chair like the rest of them she would have stuck around
Can't believe no one mentioned him in "Mad Dog and Glory." He was electric in that role.
David Caruso and Dennis Franz👍👍👍👍 Greetings from Helsinki, Finland 🇫🇮🇺🇸
He played Mitch, the good cop, in First Blood as well.
Fun Fact: David Milch tried talking Steven Bochco out of casting Caruso because he knew it was going to be a headache.
Caruso was awesome in King of New York and as De Niro's partner in Mad Dog & Glory in 1993. Jade wasn't as bad as the critics said. If he had stayed on NYPD Blue he would have become as lifeless as he later did on CSI: Miami, just cranking out episodes.
I liked Jade, but then again I think William Friedkin is a brilliant director.
Loved it when he got that hydrant in the skull
Caruso leaving NYPD Blue was the best thing that could have happened to that show. The Writers built him up, in an unrealistic fashion, the show should have been called, NYPD Redhead. I never took the show seriously, but things have a way of working out for the best; Caruso was terrific in CSI, NYPD evolved into one for the ages and the development of Sipowicz was magnificent.
I thought he was a joke in CSI Miami -- seldom watched it and when I did, I laughed AT him.
Could not disagree more ,John Kelly was one of the greatest TV Characters of all time whereas the glossy CSI passed me by .
in NYPD he's the opposite of what I expected looking at him - I watched because of that - he was great on CSI
It's so weird to me actors struggle to get any kind of part but once they get a hit T.V. show they want to leave the show right away. Very few are like the cast from Supernatural who really appreciate being on a show and actually having a job.
Reminded me of when Dean took a shot at Caruso's sunglasses gimmick calling him a no talent douchebag lol
This was back in 1995. Television was seen as very inferior to films back then. An actor could go from television to the movies, but going back to TV was seen as a career slide. You can’t blame Caruso for trying to break into film. Long-form television hadn’t established itself as the format it is today.
Yeah Jensen Ackles turned down the role of Hawkeye because he wanted to stay on Supernatural. Just shows how much he loved being on the show
@@ARBLACKx Not necesarily about love. Some see acting as just a job and Supernatural was a steady gig, while the MCU was brand new and it was possible that it wouldn't fly at all. In hindsight it was obviously a bad move for Caruso at the time, since he didn't brake in as a huge movie star, but if acting in movies was what he wanted why shouldn't he go for it?
And he got back into tv a few years later with CSI when it didn't work for him.
@@Mukation Nobody see's acting as "Just a job".
he is also great in mad dog and glory
Caruso was great in that first season of NYPD Blue, but he didn't like being one of many in an ensemble cast. He wanted to be the star. So what did he do? He joined another ensemble cast. My belief is that he found out that Jimmy Smits was the first choice for the lead in NYPD Blue and he didn't like being the second choice.
Honestly, hindsight is 20/20. The reality is he was a hot commodity then and had aspirations of being a film star so it's understandable that he'd go in that direction. Also I feel it was more of a questionable move than now. Back then NYPD Blue was considered a ground breaking drama but it's kinda tame by today's standards. Meanwhile Caruso ended up returning to procedural dramas and cashed in so it's not like he's left broke and forgotten.
His best role playing the wimpy nerd cop in Rambo.
You mean First Blood
@@berniebrito6259 yep .
I remember I was watching first blood once, which at that point I had seen a few times, and my uncle pointed out that he was the guy from CSI. He was so young in that movie
NYPD Blue we well written and directed. Dave Caruso I'll always remember him as the Howdy Doody looking sheriff in First Blood (Rambo 1). He always had that newbie whatever look. Not a seasoned anyone. (cop). Oddly he got cop roles. Over and over. To play an on-screen cop...or TV...an actor needs to be passable as a "tough guy". Perhaps if he dyed his hair sandy blonde and didn't do over the top attempts to be tough...
Tom Hardy...great actor and underrated. Was great as "Bain" in Dark Knight 3. Was menacing while only able to show his eyes and talking like a Shakespearian actor. And looking massive. which he wasn't really. Or Hockim Phoenix...played the emperor in Gladiator...was his acting ability that made him perfect for his role.
Funny. There are so many guys in Hollywood that CAN actually act but haven't really been given the opportunities they deserve.
Caruso was so wrong for the op roles. Why comedians make fun of him on talk shows.
What I love about Tarantino more then many other directors is I can see myself sitting at a bar with a few beers talking the shit with him about movies I can’t see me doing that with Scorsese’s, Cameron, Spielberg or Lucas. Imagine seeing Wolfgang Peterson or Ridley Scott in a bar. They would probably tell you to piss off while Tarantino would be saying how underrated James Spader was in Less Then Zero.
i think even David Caruso would admit he should have stayed. But he became a heart throb star sensation over night and he simply couldnt handle it.
I remember reading about some actress that was offered tens of millions to stay on a hospital TV series and she turned it down to become a "movie star." The fact I can't remember her name proves what a bad idea it was.
KING OF NEW YORK is the greatest film Scorsese never made.
HPMcQueen - Um .. it was Abel Ferrara’s work as the movie’s director. Scorsese has nothing to do with the film. Sorry ..
@@retro9173 Um... that's why he said "never"...
@@Pinki2019 - k, .. never mind then
he was absolutely incredible in nypd blue. I stopped watching the show after he left. i wonder why anyone would continue to watch the show without caruso in it. he was great in films as well. I keep coming back to his imdb page to see if he is filming anything. why on earth did he stop acting? such a waste of talent
You should not have stopped watching it. Dennis Franz was a hell of an actor and Sipowitz was a great character.
The show was fantastic with him and it was also
fantastic after he left
The show had several great seasons after he left, I think losing Jimmy Smits was the bigger blow and Of course losing David Milch behind the scenes after season 7 was the beginning of the end of the shows prime. It shouldn't have gone 12 seasons.
The best thing to happen to NYPD Blue was Caruso leaving; it allowed Smits and Franz equal time to play partners, as well as giving others actors limelight.
As someone familiar with the job in New York New Jersey, he played the part of a Irish rank and file cop perfect. He left because of greed.
The best part about Kelly was the contrast between his quiet demeanour and the dark stuff he was doing or saying
I disagree, if he stayed we would have never had Jimmy Smits as Bobby Simone. Not only was Jimmy loveable on the show, his character had depth. Bobby helped soften Sipowicz and they gelled well.
Well said, I completely agree. Smits and Franz made a great team and I thought he and Kim Delaney made a great couple.
Caruso is a great actor, always was. I love Kiss of death too.
If he's so great then why hasn't he worked since 2012? Part of being "great" is not being an asshole.
What about mad dog and glory? Cop in that one too.
In the next video QT explains why water is wet amd why you should touch a hot stove
It's similar to McLean Stevenson leaving MASH....McLean Stevenson WAS colonel Blake
Roger Bowen was Colonel Blake.
@@joebarr725 We're talking television here.
Caruso is one of those guys who probably said to himself "hey, I really stink as an actor, what do I do now? Oh, I know, I'll deliver my lines so absurdly it won't make any sense, but I might fool some people into thinking I'm good." Vincent D'Onofrio is another one.
Not sure he had much of a choice. Steven Bocho in an interview talked about Caruso's "craziness" and being hard to work with and being a ticking time-bomb that you never knew when it would go off.
So true
Love Quentin's casting to death.
Yeah, it's a weird thing about Caruso. I find him incredibly compelling as John Kelly on NYPD Blue, but I've found him unbelievably cheesy in most everything he's done since. I need to check out more of his earlier work to see if I like him in that stuff.
He was amazing in NYPD BLUE!!!
Caruso was awesome in King of New York
He was an ingrate. King of NY is a classic.
He was great on NYPD Blue. Smits was good, Ricky was good but he was great.
They forgot Mad Dog and Glory...
I've been binge-watching NYPD Blue over the past three weeks -- up to Season 9 now (as of April 10, 2021) with just three (3) seasons left to go. Andy Sip-o'-wits! (Sipowicz) is playing hard-to-get with Det. Connie McDowell and should just give it up lol It was sad to see Bobby Simone go out. Danny Sorenson was just too obsessed with Diane for his own good. Caruso may have left the show on his own accord, but came out okay with CSI: Miami, the perfect show for the new HDTV technology, to-boot!
Caruso played the "Pussy" in An Officer And A Gentleman (1982).
Caruso was always really good in TV roles. Mediocre to slightly less than mediocre in movie roles. He should've stuck with TV.
He was good, no doubt, in NYPD Blue. But I’m glad he left because it paved the way for Detective Simone and Diane Russell.
He got CSI Miami
NYPD Blue was made for Caruso's character? Wow....
I always thought it was Dennis Franz who was the lead actor.
Remember when NYPD Blue was considered 'edgy'? Pepperidge Farm remembers.
By the way did Dennis Franz EVER get over his demons on that show or did he just sigh a lot right up until the last episode?
Hes actually... Puts on sunglasses......... Right..
YYYYYYEEEEEAAAAAHHHHHH
I wanna see Carusa as a really camp cop. So camp it's awkward for literally everyone.
I loved him in King of New York. Being in CSI was so cheesy and he became a cliche
Caruso was in First Blood also, as a wimpy type of cop.
We all said that the day he left!
What a dope!
Hopefully Tarantino puts him in his last movie
watch caruso in hudson hawk i forgot he was in it
I loved Dennis franz
I am heartbroken the David Caruso left NYPD Blue. He was the reason I was watching. SOOOOO good and sexy and ... I feel sad now. I guess I need a real boyfriend and a real life, huh?
It's amazing, to me at least, that he lacked the insight to see what a perfect spot he was in. The writing was epic, he was
playing off Dennis Franz, it was his show. You want to be a movie star THAT BAD? What was there NOT TO LOVE about
that situation? You're a freaking' redhead for crissake. It's the break of a lifetime, and everybody could see it but him.
It was a good role for him and a good character, to be sure. On the other hand, his leaving meant we got four seasons with Det. Simone and the show gradually refocused onto Andy Sipowicz, both of which are wins in my book.
The show definitely became more of an ensemble with Franz at the forefront of it after Caruso left. It was better for the show he left even if it wasn't good for his career.
It would have been better with both Simone an curuso
Yeah, it was a bad move for Caruso, but he thought he had finally arrived after years of being a bit player in movies and TV shows. So you can't really blame him for taking his shot when he was on the cover of every magazine.
You have to remember that back in the 90s, there was still a very clear line between TV and Film actors. For every Bruce Willis and Tom Hanks, there was a Tom Selleck and Ted Danson. And the fear was if you stayed on a hit show too long, then people couldn't accept you in other roles. Now everybody does both easily.
Caruso took his shot and it backfired.
Yeah, that's fair.
All your points have some merit but Caruso suddenly had lots of attention for ONE hot series for less than ONE season of performances. Talk about jumping the gun. Some of the Friends cast made it big quickly too but a few of them made movies AND kept the series gig at the same time. I think what hurt Caruso the most was his head became huge.
@@danc3693 George Clooney finished out his ER contract when he easily could've quit.
Agreed. That there was a very big separation between film and tv, with film being the Real Big Deal. Even the way seating was arranged at the Golden Globes awards ceremony, the film actors got the best views. You weren’t a successful actor until you were a movie actor and the transition from tv to film, did not work for everyone. I also remember a red carpet interview at the time with Bruce Wills and and Don Johnson, after both had acted in some movies, saying “No more small screen.“
And it was the best thing for the show long term. The show went from being a star vehicle for Caruso to being much more of an ensemble show.
Letting QT talk about films to his heart's content is like turning a kid loose in a candy shop & letting him gorge himself.
Galantski That’s why it’s SAD when the asshole host just WON’T SHUT UP and talks over QT and interrupts. I mean what the fuck is your PROBLEM, host?!
but they interrupt him
The way y'all talk about NYPD Blue makes me wish y'all did a rewatchables TV shows/episodes
I’d buy this stuff, it’s that good
He’ll always be Mitch from First Blood as far as I’m concerned.
lol good one. glad someone thinks outside the box. "horatio" to me but yep always think back to that role still.
For me it's KitKat in Hudson Hawk
Oh sweet Mitch
One of those rare instances where someone thinks they're too good for a job and it backfires. Yes, he made bank with CSI Miami, but that show will never be mentioned among the best TV series of all time like NYPD Blue is.
This comment is right on point!
I'm not sure he thought he was too good for it. He was perfect for it and was crushing it. Frankly, it might be better the way it stands now because the character never faltered and became stale.
He didn’t have time to care, was busy counting his money.
when you are too good at your job, it's natural to think that your talents are being wasted there
CSI Miami just flat out sucked. The acting, including Caruso's, was terrible, the sets and lighting were the stars of the show. Dictionary definition of style over substance.
They nailed it for sure. Give him credit though, he rode that bullsh*t acting in CSI all the way to the bank.
exactly and you can watch that show to this day and dream back to 2005 all over again. everyone deserves credit that made that work.
Dennis franz is a rock star, he was the best on nypd blue, what a great show!!!!
Sean Kearney He definitely supporter Russo’s character extremely well.
From what I understand Franz’s character was supposed to die as a result of the mob hit in the first season. But Caruso started acting like a diva and they had to rewrite some scripts when it was plain that he wouldn’t be around for long. They were fortunate to have an actor like Franz who could just take over like that. Franz went on to be a star while Caruso did some shitty movies and disappeared for a while.

Pretty much. At least with Shelley Long, her contract for doing Cheers was up, she decided not to renew.

Caruso didn't really have a choice. It was stay and risk being fired or worse, or leave. He rubbed everybody the wrong way, even Dennis Franz, and from most reports he's all but a Zen master. It takes a lot to get him mad. It was the old "jump-or-be-pushed" story, and he chose to jump.
