    Jake, I find you very refreshing for the hobby. You don't buy in to what everyone seems to say in order to go along with the crowd, but instead you look at the science and then just do it...and you have repeated success over and over. I often hear that people say you need a quite established tank in order to grow acros successfully because only then is the chemistry stable. However, in theory a person could do 100% water changes on a daily basis and maintain the exact chemistry each water change and so the corals/fish/or whatever should be fine with that. I would certainly be curious to see you do a similar setup with "difficult" corals. I'd also be curious to see if it is likewise possible with anemones, as they are often cited as requiring a mature tank as well.

    I'm a fresh water aquarium person. Doing research, because I fell in love with corals at my lfs. I really don't want to go all in salt water crazy, don't want salt water fish, I just want the beauty of the corals. I'm glad to have discovered your channel, glad to know that this part of the hobby can be simple, not stressful. I have a lot to learn, before setting up a coral tank. Thank you for all the information, and packaging it in a low-key way.

    This makes me imagine an art gallery type fish room with small cube tanks on plinths, each tank kept pristine with a black background, and just one colony in each

    My favorite tank fresh or salt is also my simplest tank as well. Just put up a video on it not long ago. 10g Aqueon with a tidal 75 HOB. All thats in it is a Galaxia colony, One Superman shroom and a little frag of GSp with a Kessil A-80 light, also the most lush beautiful Caulerpa and some dragons breath. Live stock is a coral banded and a snail or two. I don't do anything more than top offs when it needs it (full lid) and dose a little all-for-reef and acropower when I remember. Yet this simple tank makes me smile every day.

    Just converted my 10 gallon fish observation qt to a nano reef about a month ago and insta stocked it with some lps and a mushroom. Had a fluval evo light and a tunze submersible light lying around. Experimenting with a double photo period of 6 on 6 off with 3 hours of peak lighting during both on periods. Will be interesting to see how fast I can get the tank to look grown out. So far the only money I have spent on it was a few corals amounting to probably $40 to add to the stuff I had lying around to stock it.

    Jake - videos like this is what makes Reef Builders great. More videos like this. Also I reaaaaaallllllly think you should consider starting a parallel freshwater channel. Seriously. The fresh water game needs you just as much as the reef world. You could call the channel "Sweetwater Chronicles (by Reef Builders)" :)

    I would do one like that with some rocks out of my reef tank and all the mushrooms and softies that don't like the powerheads and my attempts to keep my acros happy.
    And would throw a hawkfish that lives in my sump.
    You actually inspired me to do just that.

    It's a very pretty set up. Unique, but pretty.
    It's a very fun way of showing these. And it is important to show where and how this hobby can be done easier, were and when appropriate.
    This is a perfect example.
    It also reminds me a lot of an ikebana aquascape. Though notably without the bowl.

    It's has a cool ambiance to it. I would love a tank like this on my desk.
    I have had a 10 gallon coral qt tank for about 1.5 years and it uses a aquaclear 20 hob filter. I have had no issues. It does have a Hydra 32 light and a nero 3, but no skimmer, and I dose and top off by hand.
    It has no fish, just corals and some snails, mostly lps, but it has housed a few easier sps.

    Honestly this should be THE mainstream way to keep corals, with reef aquariums being the more advanced part of the hobby. Anyone can keep corals this way so new hobbyists should be introduced to this first IMO. We would also get the added benefits of seeing real coral ART take place.

    A reef tank that could work at a school would be interesting. A mature freshwater tank with lots of plants and light stocking can often easily coast for a month (without any maintenance at all) when the school is out for the summer. Would it be possible to do something similar with a reef tank that would still be engaging for kids to look at?

    • @tranquilwaters917
      @tranquilwaters917 2 роки тому

      I would be concerned leaving a tank at school for the summer recess. Remember this is when the majority of the "Maintenance" work is done. I have seen them spraying for insects in classes and outside them. Spraying for weeds and this is also when they do deep "Chemical Cleans" in the class-rooms. Plus you never know who might unplug something to "save the district money." But by far the one that is most troublesome is many schools turn the AC up during the summer to 88 to save money.

    I started w/a 24 gal mitered AIO tank (salt, lifeguard aquatics from Fish Den which I know you know... yes that big old clown died), and also started w/FW tanks. I think I have the same NICREW FW lights on my 2 FW planted tanks. I really dont understand why these aren't more popular. Much better look and is more resilient to algae scrapers.

    My simple 10 gallon QT with a HOB, which is now home to a clown, has been going as long as my DT (7 months) and has been spotless, no algae, no diatoms after an initial bloom, no Dino’s etc. and it gets way more sunlight than my DT.
    My DT with the same rock and water, less sunlight and lots of biomedia, sponges, carbon etc. is loaded with GHA, some Dinos and cyano! It all started after I got a hammer frag from a LFS…I haven’t bought anything in 2-3 months now in fear that it could die, but I also don’t see how I’m magically going to get a strong biome, pods, coraline etc. without adding some coral? What do you think?

    Jake I have that UNS tank! You got me thinking about ideas from the planted tank side. I utitilize the pps pro dosing regime. I know you and Mark disagree with many ideas that people try adopting into the reefing side.
    However when it comes to dosing elements in a reef tank, what dosing regime parallels the main planted tank methods (EI and pps pro)? Is there formulations that focus solely on animal health in a reef like plants in a planted tank?
    What are your thoughts?

    i think there's a certain pretentiousness in the reef hobby that makes it about equipment and display more than the animals and i'm sure some people forget that these are genuinely pets and not decoration. people get caught up in the fancy stuff and forget that just because it has a label doesn't mean it works any better, and i see so many people trying to push a certain look with the most expensive equipment like radions and a trident on even a softie tank and i think it pushes new people away from the hobby thinking it's too elite to even consider a possibility. it really can be as easy as a canister filter and a light that gives just enough intensity to satisfy coral needs.

    • @ReefBuildersVideo
      @ReefBuildersVideo  2 роки тому

      You're right, I see some tanks which are little more than FOWLRs with a couple soft corals and zoanthids but it'll have a calcium reactor and dosers and a Trident and it just makes me scratch my head
