What Do Tour De France Riders Have On Their Bike Computers? (2024 Edition)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 сер 2024
- A bike computer, also known as a head unit, is essential for cyclists, particularly pros. These devices provide valuable information like maps, power data, heart rate, and elevation, helping to inform and improve your cycling! But what information do Tour de France pros display on their head units? Dan and Ollie had the chance to check out John Degenkolb's Wahoo, chat with Sam Bennett about the data on his head unit, and learn from Nils Eekhoff about his key data fields.

Did any of these stats surprise you? 👀
Body Temperature
Surprised by: TSS on. Watts off🚫⚡️⁉️.
I'm more surprised that pros are using wahoo over garmin. I wonder what the break down is over how many uses one over the other.
@@bryangle Both teams featured are sponsored by Wahoo. I expect that's the main factor in what most pros use.
That map feature truly is incredible. It track where you have been, and has every route (from roads to MTB single track) displayed clearly so you can see where you’re going too. It’s saved me a number of times from being lost.
Really enjoy Dan as the presenter!
He's been doing it for GCN for about 34 years so you're in luck
The first guy tracks his "Fahrts". Like a free, little boost.
Marginal gains 🤣
That ‘first guy’ won shitloads of very big races. Go check him out 😊
@jkotvis Nah, that'd leave less time to make childish jokes.
When I got back into cycling as an adult , my first computer was 3 fields speed, cadence , Heartrate. Now I have a garmin and I have a couple extra fields ( Elapsed time and Distance). But when I first started watching the pro races it was all SRM, and what was taped to the stem were important direction changes . Now all the teams have these GPS computers and the riders can actually see the route on the screen if they want, and the notes taped to the stem if any are the fuelling routine..
I have Tetris on mine
We hope you're not playing that mid ride? 👀
It’s great for block training, no?
@@noptimized this guy
I found the less data fields I see on the bike computer, the more relax I am during the ride, hence happier. The only data that worth looking for me now is distance and time of the day 😆
Very timely video, my watch has gotten to the point of being unusable on longer rides so just bought a Wahoo which should arrive today!
Enjoy! We think you'll love it 😍
I like using the steepness data as I’m not very good on climbs. Knowing what’s coming helps
I am the other way around, I am not such a fan of the detailed real-time steepness maps. Because suddenly I see > 18% and I get a small panic attack. When I don't see it coming I push through :P
Dege 😍
It's time for a new wahoo release I think
Don't say that, I just upgraded to the Bolt V2 😅
@@KurtisPapebut the v2 will last for ages👍🏻
Love this video and the content. I also enjoy Ollie with Dan, it’s like the dynamic duo of Silly and Sage (cue Batman music). No disrespect, I say it with love.
The ring says “IM Herzen von Europa”… I think it’s about the Frankfurt football club.
Is it just me, Or do you remember when your bike Sigma computer was wired and it showed ride time, distance and speed ?
I remember racing when SRM came out and everyone in the peleton thought this was magic. I honestly can't believe how much data is on my Wahoo now.
Go Cav.
Yes! With coloured buttons…and you had to put in batteries once a year.
I have a "bonking" data field on my Garmin. I created it during a break towards the end of a long ride. I have distance to go, ascent to go, eta, & temperature. Of all those fields, the ascent to go may be the most satisfying to look at since the number seems to drop fairly quickly....
Every body surely wanna see Pogi's wahoo!!!
I think tech savvy amateur cyclists are a lot better than pros on such things 😂 Or focus on totally different things, for instance the TIME, meaning what time it is (I haven't seen the pros knowing what time it is on their units) becausw we need to come back home on time. Or the amount of climbing, because we need to know where we are on the ride in terms of uphills. Anyways, on my main page I have: Speed, HR, Time, Ride Time, Avg Speed, Avg HR, Altitude, Elevation gain, Temperature, Total calories. I don't use a power meter. I also have the map page and definitely watch it in the descents to know if bends are sharp. I also have the altitude profile page.
Riders be like: "And on this screen, for the boring stages, I have Snake"
Great content!!!!!
Very interesting to see. I'm a bit oldskool, I don't have a Wahoo and had no clue al these functions were in it (also I didnt know the pro's used this during races)
I'm a data nerd I LOVE to see numbers and stats
I have had to ride and plot new courses and upload them to Google maps cycling feature for others to learn about from my precedent data collection from the Sigma ROX .
I have a very cheap and simple head unit. Just a clear map showing me my route, with turn by turn directions, my current speed and how far left I have to go.
Would love to see what Frank VDB does have, being a young gun and the data nerd.
Interesting that Sam Bennett found core temp to be actionable
I'd love to know how he is getting that? A watch or a specific sensor?
@@mralexcheekdef not a watch 💀
@@mralexcheek Anal thermometer
@@mralexcheek "core" is the brand. It's a sensor that slides onto your HR strap.
Well do TdF rider have only wahoo bike computer ? What do garmin riders have ?
Now now that wouldn’t be sponsor specific content if they showed other teams Garmin’s or even Hammerheads.
Obviously only getting access to these riders as they have the same sponsors.
It’s a Wahoo ad. Notice how it says AD in the upper corner on the video thumbnail.
@@noptimized Did not catch it. Thanks now I know why ;)
Solar and a goofy app store?
Very much like how Degenkolb controls his Spotify through his wahoo. Severely disappointed he's apparently been listening to the trash motivation song by Kontra K last.
Is that the Bolt or the Roam that they have?
What!?? No mention that the WAHOO is 11% more aero than their competitors? Learned this in the training sessions (for work) with Wahoo. 😄.
I use just the basics. Speed, distance and elevation. Where I live there are large "dead" zones, so a phone is not reliable.
GPS needs no phone signal, so mapping is solid.
@henseleric wish that was true. I have been deep in the canyons and such. There is nothing. Once there is a signal, the GPS unit will fudge in a straight line. This has happened with both WAHOO and Garmin. We have a 2.5 mile tunnel out here. No signal gets through that.
@@alethearobinson8132 that must be some great canyons! Modern day phones actually combine multiple GNSS systems, like GPS, Glonas, Galileo and Beidou. This increases the chance of finding enough satellites in the sky, but is no guarantee if the canyons are deep enough.
Thanks Dan...so , in your day , it was a sextant and an abacus ?? Yeah. I'm learning new tech all the time , it is amazing , but ...expensive !!
Looks like a wahoo commercial.
Cool 🖖
Sorry for the blunt question, but is the Hammerhead any good? Greetings from Germany
Awesome :)
Hmmm. Nice bike!
If the screen was bigger, it would be better
Hello. please add portuguese translation in yours videos. Today I use the IA translation but it's not the same. I love yours videos in UK. Best Regards from ITU Sao Paulo Brazil
you know how the wind is?...err, I don't think so. Not in a Wahoo
I'm not, and never will be a professional cyclist, so I have no screen on my handlebars at all, because I don't NEED any of this information, and I cycle partly to get away from screens. I carry a smart phone (on silent!) in my rear pocket running strava and as emergency navigation or 🤯 phone calls. I'm not denying that all this info is interesting and/or useful, but it's not for me. I recommend trying riding without one, see if you're any slower or quicker, and if you're more relaxed. Focus on your surroundings, listen to your body.
Tried that once, took away all my tech, focused on my surrounding, and got bored quickly. went back indoors where I can ride on a trainer while gaming on a PS5. That was 2 years ago, and never looked back since. nothing beats gaming on a PS5 while you cycle.
@@ongmengyeowaaron4462 🤣🤣🤣
I dont have a power meter as that would just be embarrassing numbers anyway but i always liked seeing how fast i'm going and how far i have gone. and once in a while i try plotting a new route and load it on my old wahoo bolt but that one is rather shit at routing so you just end up getting lost which is also fine :P
That's the cool thing about cycling! You can ride any style you like 🙌
i’m not a professional cyclist and i love having a computer! different strokes for different boats
Navel gazers love that stuff
If only they would include some Garmin riders...
Strange how nobody has a Garmin 😅
Sshh they don’t talk about Garmin users on GCN 😅
So an advert for Wahoo. Perhaps they sponsored it .....?
Can somebody change batteries on Nils Eekhoff please, his voice tells me connection is about to shut down!
Wow, so no Garmin bike computers. Ah, gotcha, embedded advertising for Wahoo.
Not a video for Garmin Edge users 😂
Lloydie raced with bike computers. So he’s not that old
It was probably one of those little wired things with zip-ties and magnets on the wheels 😅
The Wahoo bike computers WILL delaminate after use!! everyone i know on a wahoo has delamination on their screens
Cycling should NOT be compared to F1 which is mostly about the technology. Cycling is about a human endeavor and should be compared to track and field (athletics to you). The less technology the better.
That ship sailed when LeMond started tracking heartrate.
Cycling is different things for different people, just like anything else. I enjoy the tech.
F1 is about the human endeavour in a million dollar race machine, just like cycling is about the human endeavour in a million dollar research road machine. Not much difference to be honest
I use a Garmin because the Wahoo is extremely ugly and would ruin my bike.
The hairline on the first guy definitely betrayed the number of TDFs. lol.
Nothing, I ride with Garmin 😊😊😊 much better
Why does everyone use Wahoo?
That would be a miracle to be answered. I mean these guys are riding 15k-20k $$ bikes and honestly Wahoo it's far from being to most "fancy" out there. There's hammerhead karoo 3, Garmin 1040/1050, etc.
Sponsorship obligations…
GCN are sponsored by Wahoo, so they are legally obligated to pretend there is only one maker of cycling computers..
@@cappaculla I know 🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️ it the worst!
It’s literally an AD, and is indicated as such on the video thumbnail. You don’t have to watch it, nor complain about it.
I’ll tell what’s NOT on my Wahoo - my bloody HR, useless HRMs. Don’t buy the HRM straps they are just unreliable even if the Elemnt Bolt is ok. Whinge over.
