Honestly there's a ton of medieval kingdoms that you could do book series on and folks would be convinced it was a fantasy series. The Norwegian Civil War Era with its infinite pretenders, Guelph and Ghibilline Italy with it's constant betrayals and intrigue, the Norman Kingdom of Sicily and how casually brutal it was to peasants while being so diverse due to it being in the middle of the Mediterranean. Personally I feel the Mongol Empire and it's fractured successors are overlooked in general for story telling potential though
Morocco. There was one really successful and long reigning Sultan who was so wealthy that he had a harem of dozens of women as well as multiple wives. When he finally died, he left behind him 100 sons who all then turned on one another attempting to seize the throne. There were alliances of convenience and betrayals and backstabbings. It took decades for the sons to fight one another to the death until one of them emerged who was powerful enough to secure the throne, though by then the country was in ruins and the throne was practically bankrupt.
Love your channel! I think William the conqueror is interesting - as the Duke of Normandy, he was a vassal of the king of France, yet he conquered England and became a king himself, while still remaining technically a vassal. The shift in power dynamics must have been huge!
I'll add it to the list. I've spoken about spying and networks in various other videos, this could be a nice way to draw them all together. The definitive spy video as it were :D
Thanks. I'm planning another video about how to take historical plots and make them actual plots, so expect more examples there :D (And also theocracies because Pope Wars are awesome fun)
When you mentioned changing alliances that made me think of a Mad King scenario where he tries to break off a century old Alliance but the ministry of states are two to interconnected so it just turns into the Balkans
Your description of cat's paw politics with an incompetent or young figurehead and controlling secondary figure reminded me of an anime where the emperor was a child and a corrupt minister was actually in control.
Which historical monarchy is the most plot-mine worthy?

Philp II of Macedon. Alexander wouldn't have been 'The Great' without him, and what he did was probably more difficult.
A fantasy Bank and the Assassin's Guild would go hand-to-hand that way there's an incentive to pay back the loans
I just found you today and I absolutely love your content. I've watched 3 of your videos in the past 7 hours 😆
Welcome to my corner of UA-cam :D
Hey, I just had an idea for a video topic. What do you think about making a video on espionage and spy networks in fantasy?
I'll add it to the list. I've spoken about spying and networks in various other videos, this could be a nice way to draw them all together. The definitive spy video as it were :D
Thank you for making those series. I love them =]
You are very welcome and thank you for the kind words.
Hwarang has been done--and nobody can top Park Seojoon and Park Hyungsik! 😅
You are awesome. I hope you know that.
Thanks for the kind words!
Those were VERY GOOD examples because politics are hard to tackle

At the outset let me just say i love that intro.
Your description of cat's paw politics with an incompetent or young figurehead and controlling secondary figure reminded me of an anime where the emperor was a child and a corrupt minister was actually in control.
I hate that anime as they execute the young emperor, despite being just a puppet.
Why is the artisan class not put between the merchants and the peasantry? And given that it's not which is that they included in?
For this video, to cut down on the run time, I included them in the merchant class, but you can absolutely split them out into their own group.
That's so interesting I never thought about that but you're absolutely correct
I had no idea that Charlamagne was the sentence of a Duke of the Marivingians!!
It’s a convoluted bit of history 😁
