This probably the biggest ego moment in the show. He just had to subtlely take credit for the work.
And this exact scene led to his downfall. There is this tendency among serial killers to leave some sort of clue in the crime scene, so people get to know their work.
This was Walt leaving his clue so that his work is recognized.
Hey, it's just his "humble opinion,"!
Who wouldn't have. We all do it, it's human. Even if it's a crime we want craftsmanship to be recognized.
Yep. Walt could've let Gale take all the credit/blame for the blue meth and he would be out of the game scot-free, but he'll be damned before someone else gets the credit for his evil accomplishments, and damned he shall be in time.
So true. His ego is so dangerous

If Walt said nothing, Hank wouldn’t have felt compelled to look back into the case. Just shows you how much he respected Walt’s opinion, even if he occasionally ridiculed him. But that was just Hank’s character, he made fun of everyone, even Gomez. I genuinely think Hank loved him like a brother and that made the betrayal sting even more.
That’s a stretch. I don’t know why everyone keeps saying that. Yes Hank would have for a moment but you seem to forget that they kept cooking for a while after Gale died. How’s it that the genius is dead but the blue stuff keeps popping up everywhere. Hank would have opened the case again. It’s simplistic to say that he woulda left it here if it wasn’t for Walter. You all some how forgot that the blue stuff continued production after.
@@bluelit4830 He probably would’ve looked back into it but certainly not for a while, but we don’t know for sure that he would’ve. What we do know is that he only looked back into it again after this conversation with Walt.

That statement would fit perfectly if it was something legitimate not making the world’s best meth. I’m sorry but that was a dumb move. He’s finally getting Hank obsessive ass off his ass, but what did he do? He blows because he can’t handle Gale taking the fall for him when it comes to who created the world’s best meth. I love Hanks delivery of “Since when do vegans eat fried chicken?” I can’t explain it but I just love how he says it
Me too
I think it’s the implications of it that make it impactful. Hank knew Los Pollos Hermanos, and knew that their owner worked with the DEA. Gale is a proven drug manufacturer, and it’s apparent that he ate a very confined diet that was healthy and devoid of animal products. Why on earth would he have a packet from a company that sells *fried chicken*, which is quite unhealthy and goes against his vegan principles? Gus working with the DEA only increased the suspicion that Hank had for him.

An interesting part of this scene to me is 0:48 . After Hank calls Gale a genius, he goes on to make his point, that Gale was a wasted genius. That it's a shame his genius was used for something so meaningless. The reason he's talking isn't to praise Gale's genius, its to admonish how tragic it was that Gale's genius was never used for anything purposeful. But Walt can't hear any of that, because after he heard Gale get called a genius that's all he can think about. Hank then calls him an "actual genius" and we can see on Walt's face another pang of irritation, but then he doesn't hear again when Hank continues to talk about how many better things Gale could have done.
Yeah I was expecting walt to justify why the world needs evil geniuses 😆
It’s such good subtle acting with his facial expressions, you can tell he’s struggling to keep quiet and he’s so mad having all the credit for his work be given to gale
My thoughts were that Hank was suspicious already of Walt so he called Gale a genius to get under Walts skin and it worked, which is why the long pause at the end was important. Hanks gut feeling was right and now he's looking for the proof

This scene encapsulates the underlying theme of the show - Walt's need to prove that he is somebody, and his ego growing out of control to accomplish this.
"and this is just my humble opinion"
Haha, good catch
This scene made it clear Walt wanted to get caught. He wanted the credit. So I do think the show had a good ending.
Absolutely….. if he was ever caught or arrested I’m sure he’d have a huge smile on his face getting all the public attention as the great Heisenberg.
You know those serial killers who leave clues to the police? is similar to this
Walt's genius made it damn hard for Hank or anyone to catch him but Walt's ego eventually did the job for them.
Walt was a genius, but he was foolish and often unwise. This is just one of the moments where he has very poor judgement.
What I love the most looking back at this scene is that Hank actually listened to Walt and worked even harder on the case. He really was “the smartest man he’s ever met”.
"I don't wanna go to jail, But I really want to get credit"
He wants to have his cake and eat it too
I wholeheartedly believe that Walt not only wanted recognition, but he loved the rush of being a person of interest and finding ways of getting people off his trail. For him it was putting his genius and testing his genius to the maximum.
When a character's fatal flaw leads him to his downfall, that's great writing. Sends a clear message to the audience that we can take away.

@@crackhead868 Damn, good point. But, then again.. I feel like it would still turn out better than telling a DEA agent something that would only benefit them only.
This moment was probably the happiest Walt was in the entire show. He had his family back, Jesse was safe and mentally stable, and he got to not so subtly brag to hank about being the true mastermind. Also this scene cured hank from his vegetable douchebaggery. One of my favorite scenes
In addition to Gale taking his credits, what triggered Walt's self-confessed words is probably how Hank described Gale, "If you applied that big brain of his to something good, I don't know, who knows what could have helped humanity".
Walt is ironically that "big brain" guy who contributed to the establishment of Gray Matter and some part of a Nobel-Prize-winning work, however only ending up as a high school teacher who never received the respect he deserved from his family and students. Hank even joked about his less masculine personality in the beginning of the first season, saying something like "guns are for men" when Walter thought guns were heavier than he had thought. Walt is that genius who helped humanity but never received applause in the way Hank acclaimed Gale's, which was actually Walt's, genius work.
Probally the best AA advertising i ever see.
I love how drunk walter is never a good idea in this show
How many actual geniuses are there? Is currently sitting across from one...
On another note Hank respected Walt so much that he took his opinion at face value and climbed back in.
Hank : This guy, Gale Bortticher, was a genius mineral.
I’m revisiting all these old clips, I might as well just rewatch the whole series.

Its so nice of Walter to give Hank some sense of purpose in his life again by making him re-investigate the case.

Walt envies the part about Gail being a genius, but misses the part about how he could have used his brain to help humanity. Another scene showing how far gone Walt was.
He didn’t pay attention to the humanitarian efforts because he was drunk. He hears one thing that offends him, he doesn’t care about the rest.

‘This Heisenberg…he sounds handsome’
This is the moment that had Walt stuck to his game plan from the start, he would have never been caught. He would have died without nobody knowing the legendary Heisenberg. Secured a future for his family indefinitely and would have deterred the DEA away from from him. But no. Walt couldn’t live without people knowing the truth. He couldn’t let his brother-in law believe he had won. This is what ego and pride does folks. It makes us incompetent. Prone to weakness. Gus Fring was many things, but he was never prideful. He waited 20 years to get revenge on the cartel, because he kept his plans away from his enemies. Because he made them believe he was a weak. That compared to him, he was inferior. It would have been so interesting to see a timeline were Walt had kept his pride in cheek. To see how many more months or maybe years he would have had and how much he would have grown his criminal empire to see it also double in size.
I Think the character of Gus does a good job showing a Walt that keeps his pride in cheek
Walt: "Say his name."
Hank: "Gale?"
Heisenberg: "You're god damn right."
Ego...one of the biggest downfalls of man
To be fair to Walter that at this point he knew was a dead man by Gus. He killed Gale and now that person who he deemed as weak was taking all the credit of his work. Not just that but he knows they are using Jessie against him leaving him even more emasculated. Then Skyler goes and buys the car wash and even scolds him for paying cash for champagne. Walter felt like no one even gives a shit about his life could end at any moment and it wouldn’t matter in the slightest. The only thing he could do was just speak the truth, for one moment say that there is someone out there better than Gale. Yeah it screwed him and everyone over, but keep in mind that none of this would’ve happened if Skyler just let him die like he wanted to, or if Jessie didn’t try to kill those drug dealers, or let Jane blackmail Walt. Everyone had a role in making of Heisenberg.
You’re right people are quick to hate on Walt
Ultimately, the genius was still out there and Hank would’ve inadvertently got back into the game once he realised it wasn’t Gale. Walter literally couldn’t stand someone else taking credit. He’d rather die taking the credit than die knowing someone else did.
It’s crazy how hank talks about if Gale had used his knowledge for good. Because Walter DID use his knowledge for good and only was given a job as a high school teacher. It’s almost like Walter was also thinking “I did try it the right way, It got me no where”
This show is just unmatched in its character development, and every little beat adding up to something.

Walt speaks of genius, yet he is making the dumbest decision by letting his ego do the talking for him.
Walt has a point though. All his life, with his genious, all he achieved in the eyes of his over-bearing relatives was a decent going at a dead-end job. His accomplishments, compared to Gale's, were nothing in Hank's eyes although he had put it to benefit the world. Which is why he needed to put Hank in place.
his dead-end job was a result of walter leaving gray matter, out of ego and pride.
