Thanks for the information!! I've watched the HBO miniseries the Pacific a million times and I always looked at the Japanese insignias and now I have a better understanding
Maybe do the Turkish Army next?
My stepfather was a marine on Guadalcanal and he left me a Japanese badge that you identified for me. The soldier he got it from was a Superior Private. Thank you for this information.
The Superior Private rank was also used by "specialist" (Combat engineers, Knee mortar operator etc) and beginning ranks of MPs
I suppose... but it was never considered "specialist" equivalent.
In today's Japanese Ground Self-defense Forces, the officers' ranks feature miniature chrysanthemums instead of stars, moved above the horizontal bars. The general ranks also have chrysanthemums instead of stars, but there's no "one-star" general rank.
@Premier History Imperial Japanese Army officers with the rank of 1st Lieutenant were already Company commanders (3 Platoons) and not necessarily at the rank of Captain.
This is the first time I have ever seen the rank system in the Japanese army, and I thank you for showing it . It was not that hard to remember : )
Not a problem hopatease1
The Second Class Private looks like Vietnam flag tho

Do the JSDF ranks soon.
Very interesting and with interesting background scenes.
I suppose they gave a rank badge to even lowest levels so that each man would feel important.
At enlisted rank level the Japanese also had an unofficial hierarchy, apparently based on how many meals had been eaten in military service. It bore little or no relationship to formal military rank. Those with more time in often "hazed" new recruits - a pattern found in most armed forces of the world to varying degrees.
Do WWII German and Italian Army ranks next.
I was surprised of the poorly design of their insignia, mainly because of the handling of the thickness of the stripes . The stars are ok, probably a bit large compared with the stripe/s. Had they kept the same thickness of the stripes and not making them thinner for the upper ranks would have been alright and not adding to the confusion. But then, probably this was part of the excercise.
Photos of soldiers or naval and air force personnel often lack visible rank insignia, especially in combat situations and/or in the tropics. The Japanese were often rather shabbily dressed, and spit and polish was less emphasized than in many other armed forces. One guard of Western prisoners with a reputation for cruelty was described as being rather sharply dressed, his uniform perhaps even tailored, but the context suggests he was unusual.
Can you make a Royal Grenadier guards ranks?
This is like the simplest rank structures ever
I'd love to see Czech ranks.
It would have been nice to show the Japanese terms for these ranks. e.g. sergeant : Gunso.
You probably have other countries ranks in mind but I just wanted to suggest Spain, apart from that nice video nice to see how the Japanese did things
it would be nice if you also told us the Japanese language names for each rank.

Japan is a World War II war criminal state and cannot have an army, but it can have a Self-Defense Force
I get it but they didn’t just defend and also it’s a country and not a state like in America.
