My stepfather was a marine on Guadalcanal and he left me a Japanese badge that you identified for me. The soldier he got it from was a Superior Private. Thank you for this information.

The Superior Private rank was also used by "specialist" (Combat engineers, Knee mortar operator etc) and beginning ranks of MPs

In today's Japanese Ground Self-defense Forces, the officers' ranks feature miniature chrysanthemums instead of stars, moved above the horizontal bars. The general ranks also have chrysanthemums instead of stars, but there's no "one-star" general rank.

@Premier History Imperial Japanese Army officers with the rank of 1st Lieutenant were already Company commanders (3 Platoons) and not necessarily at the rank of Captain.

Very interesting and with interesting background scenes.
I suppose they gave a rank badge to even lowest levels so that each man would feel important.

At enlisted rank level the Japanese also had an unofficial hierarchy, apparently based on how many meals had been eaten in military service. It bore little or no relationship to formal military rank. Those with more time in often "hazed" new recruits - a pattern found in most armed forces of the world to varying degrees.

I was surprised of the poorly design of their insignia, mainly because of the handling of the thickness of the stripes . The stars are ok, probably a bit large compared with the stripe/s. Had they kept the same thickness of the stripes and not making them thinner for the upper ranks would have been alright and not adding to the confusion. But then, probably this was part of the excercise.

Photos of soldiers or naval and air force personnel often lack visible rank insignia, especially in combat situations and/or in the tropics. The Japanese were often rather shabbily dressed, and spit and polish was less emphasized than in many other armed forces. One guard of Western prisoners with a reputation for cruelty was described as being rather sharply dressed, his uniform perhaps even tailored, but the context suggests he was unusual.
