- With ‘Horizon: An American Saga’ on the…horizon…Sean and Amanda build the Kevin Costner Hall of Fame by running through Costner’s entire filmography to try to narrow it down to 10 movies. From the cowboy, to the athlete, to the spy, and back again, this filmography (and this episode) is a journey!

Amanda, we love you. The Molly's Game take is ludicrous for a hall of fame
Amanda with I guess my husband’s having an affair quote had me rolling. So nonchalant and off the cuff. Classic Dobbins.
Hoping that a Donald Sutherland Hall of Fame episode is coming soon. RIP to a legend.
Re: Anthony Quinn playing a Mexican guy, that’s not weird because Anthony Quinn IS Mexican.
11:41 also, Richard Burton was welsh, not english
I was going to watch this but if they didn't even do a little research on his heritage, I'm a bit reluctant. Why do they think Quinn playing a Mexican is weird?
And the concern that a British guy might be the next Superman when a British guy has already been Superman for the last decade plus.
@@user-mg4xt3br5g I guess they think it’s problematic like John Wayne playing genghis khan or something
I thought the EXACT same thing and was going to comment on it. Maybe they thought that his depiction of a Mexican man was kinda problematic?
Amanda, give Open Range another watch. It's sooooo good. It's beautifully shot. It's a small story epically told. It's crazy romantic. And it has one of the best gunfights in movie history.
Can't believe you haven't watch Mr Brooks, that is maybe his most interesting role, and only villain role. It sticks out in his filmography.
I remember seeing that in theaters. Really good and even Dane Cook is tolerable. One of Costner’s “comeback” movies along with Three Days.
Mr. Brooks is a very good movie. Maybe not hall of fame, but his best movie besides Open Range over the last 25 years.
I eagerly anticipated Big Pic’s take on Mr Brooks for the whole episode! I will mail you my Bluray of Mr Brooks just to get your take. Incredible movie, and I can watch it because of the glory of physical media. You are seen Mr. Fennessey. Obviously I can mail the Blu-ray to a corporate address. Also is untouchables not a guys rocking out movie?
My Top 5 movies are:
#1 Dances with Wolves
#2 JFK
#3 Bodyguard
#4 Field of Dreams
#5 No Way Out
Dances with wolves and field of dreams are probably both in my all time top 10.
@@zimmy4868 That gangsta movie he did with Sean Connery and Andy Garcia was good too. And that Cuban missile crisis movie was also good
I was really looking forward to hearing the Mr. Brooks take. I actually loved it, in large part because it was the least expected Costner performance I've ever seen it.
I find it very hard to trust a person who doesn't love the ocean.
Sean, YOU'RE SUSPECT
Double hot take: A Perfect World is not only Costners' best performance, it's also Eastwood's 2nd best directorial effort.
What's 1 in you Clint list? (Agree completely that it's KC's best)
@@AnAfricanShah Unforgiven.
You must watch Mr Brooks. Love this ep
Thought Mr. Brooks was going to be the only late period movie that stood a chance to make it on the list. Worth a watch for those that have not seen.
Why does Amanda spazz out at least once every podcast
They all spaz out
Mr. Brooks is actually pretty great, I'd put it top 5 Costner easily
Feels like Amanda's Molly's Game explosion might more about some dad other than Kevin Costner's character
Sean had some interesting things to say about Costner. I agree with him that Costner should have played characters like Crash Davis more often. “Jock poet” is a great description.
Amanda made it all about herself and shrieked and made unfunny jokes and talked about tennis in Pasadena.
Anthony Quinn was latino
And not just Latino, but an actual Mexican!
@@RyanMichero raised in LA. The man is a staple of LA history.
Hot take: Waterworld and the postman are underrated. The box office tainted them.
🤣 🤦♂️
I tried to watch Waterworld recently. Couldn't get into It. To each their own.
The talk about the cost of water world before it came out certainly didn't help, but with both there was a bit of "wait who asked for this? We want dances with wolves 2"
I remember buzz that waterworld was doomed before it came out--I walked into the theatre expecting it to be bad. Given how hot takes didn't percolate to the genpop as easily back then it may not have been well situated in terms of expectations, but it came out July 28th and though it won in August (up against pretty forgettable fare, Apollo 13 and Batman forever had mostly blown their load) it's total domestic gross was just under 89M, only 4M more than second place for August, Dangerous Minds. 89M domestic against 175M cost in 1995.
Normal take : they are terrible movies but I like them
You sound like a drifter who found a bag of mail
Dances With Wolves is pretty great. Even at age 8 I did not think it was dull. So much so that I saw it in the theater twice. Even the 4 hour extended version is consistently engaging.
Also, Mr. Brooks is kind of amazing. It could arguably be his best role.
Came to hear about how great and underrated Open Range is, guess I'll have to wait, amazing performance from Costner and Duvall with the best gunfight I've seen in a film, one of my all time favourites
Proud member of the Dobb Mobb.
That Molly’s Game freak out was the weirdest that anyone not named Wesley Morris has ever been on this podcast.
She's right tho. Sean been riding for that movie for years. Him not even entertaining it is him betraying everything he stands for. That said it's a terrible movie
@@IVoldiI It’s because this is the KEVIN COSTNER HALL OF FAME.
He’s in the movie for like 5 and a half minutes and it’s not about him.
That was a ludicrous expectation and suggestion on Amanda’s part.
@IVoldiI um no it's quite rewatchable and would probably be a banger ep on a podcast dealing with such pick up and play movies, someone should start one.
But yeah, Chastain is flipping great in this movie which instantly makes it better than the "terrible" you try to pin on it. Throw in a showboaty Sorkin script and some great character actor performances and you're already at a solid midtier movie for adults. Far from "terrible".
@RJM1972 I thought we we all safe here on the Chastain Train, this is a tough crowd!
I loved every second of it
Tin Cup being described as a "warm bath" is perfect.
Re: Open Range
Amanda’s response to Sean saying this is the best film that Costner ever directed, “it is, but is that saying anything?”
I get maybe you don’t prefer a Western, but HE LITERALLY WON A FUCKING OSCAR FOR DIRECTING 12 YEARS PRIOR.
@@datguitarplayer1656 Agreed, but her dismissal was acting like he wasn’t an Oscar winning director whether any of us agree with his win or not.
Sean... you are wrong. Molly's Game absolutely should go into the Hall of Fame. Costner walks away with that movie. Amanda I am with you.
Revenge struggled at the box-office, finishing third in its opening weekend behind the Driving Miss Daisy and Steven Seagull's Hard to Kill. 1990 Hollywood wasn't perfect either
AMANDA we and a bunch of daughters/ probably Dad’s too are WITH YOU!!! Felt important to shout that also. The "3 years of therapy in 3 minutes" scene in Molly's Game just sums up the emotion that Costner can bring to an average film. Molly's Game is too ambitious and unfocused but still has some good Sorkin - as does Chicago 7 (a lull is not the end lol, Sean was so dramatic this pod :P ). Costner has never been bad even in his poor choices, THAT is his strength as an actor. Molly's Game doesn't work overall - it's a solid 6/10 and no-one is disputing that - but Costner brings the heart of the story to the table. Fathers play a massive part in the psychology of their daughters too - our lives are our own but our emotion and drive are planted by the men that raise us, so its not undermining to have her father's harshness result in her own. If people watching that scene don't feel anything when he keeps repeating they're going to suffer" as he breaks down because someone hurt his daughter then yeah, that's a dead heart lol. I love Costner in Yellowstone - in everything he is in - even if the films are "meh". He just gives satisfying performances and its a shame the latter half of the podcast had to be so rushed. Linking the bench scene again as it stands alone, but the Facebook BP page is all lit up over Molly’s Game too lol. ua-cam.com/video/ENbNrXkaiek/v-deo.html
Not seeing Mr Brooks????? That’s pretty shocking
This is now the fourth episode in a row where I am beginning to wonder if Amanda really wants to be on this podcast. It's not her specific opinions that seem bad, it just seems like she has given up on effort and she seems to think that raising her voice some how makes her opinion more relevant? Might be time for new blood.
Burton was famously Welsh, not English
The Dobb Mob stands with Molly’s Game
Open Range over Robin Hood. Otherwise, it's a solid list.
Open Range is better and I love it but I have the softest spot for Robin Hood Prince of Thieves as I'm guessing some people in my age do. A perfect product of its time
Hilaria Baldwin hall of fame when?
Amanda called 3 movies back to back to back “The Most Green” 🤣
Dudes, we just can't stop rockin'
Open Range is fantastic!!!
13 Days is set during the Cuban Missile Crisis portraying the story of how the U.S., led by JFK, avoided nuclear war.
I think some people think the bay of pigs and the Cuban missile crisis are the same thing.
Kind of surprised Costner’s appearance in Madonna’s Truth or Dare doc wasn’t mentioned when discussing what he is actually like as a person. He was dissed by Madonna backstage.
“In the scene, Madonna was mixing with the likes of Olivia Newton-John and Al Pacino when Kevin walked into the room. After exchanging niceties, the actor appeared to offend her when he described the show as “neat”.
The Like A Virgin hitmaker, who would have been around 33 at the time, replied: “Neat? No one has ever described it quite that way.”
After he leaves, Madonna makes a vomiting gesture before snarking: “Neat? Anybody who says my show is neat has to go.””

Omg, Amazing Stories was such a big deal for a short time, and that episode was THE episode. I remember seeing it live at the time (I would have been 9), and yeah, it was a little Spielberg WW2 movie broadcast on primetime TV in the heart of Spielberg-mania in the mid-80s. Everybody was watching. I still vividly remember the predicament of the gunner trapped under the plane and the ending of the episode. I totally forgot Kevin Costner was the pilot lol.
Spielberg and his obsession with World War 2.
i don't know what Sean is on, Molly's Game should've been a lock for HOF over half the films in there
Imagine getting worked up over Molly's Game.
Already heard the pod, just here to see Sean freak out about Molly's Game.
Sean is aging well. the beard works.
In an age where actors in their mid 50s refuse to allow a hint of gray on their heads or in their beards he's representing for the natural grey crowd (of which I'm a member).
WATCH MR BROOKS, EXCELLENT ENSEMBLE PERFORMANCE, EVEN FROM CUCKO DANE COOK 😂
Amanda needs to stop saying "yeah, yeah, yeah" whenever Sean is in the middle of an insightful point about filmmaking and culture. She's one of those inverse interesting people who hates talking about truly complicated, rich ideas and phenomena, and loves to say, silly, pop culture stuff, or just say "it's very important", "it's an Amanda movie" "His jeans are important"
Always a pleasure listening.
Mr. Brooks
FWIW Costner also turned down Bill in Kill Bill.
One note about Revenge. It is based upon a novella from Jim Harrison (Legends of the Fall) and I don't think the movie strays too far from the source material.
Open Range is incredible. Molly's Game is fun, Costner is barely in it, Amanda's take is weird.
He’s the King of the Dad movies.
“Non WW2” Division
And mom movies tbh, he’s really the heartthrob to a whole generation of nowadays moms, my mom is the biggest fan of The Bodyguard.
wow i can’t believe they’ve never seen Mr. Brooks! I saw that in theaters with my mom when i was like 12 years old lmao. We even had it on DVD! It’s fine, nothing special. Maybe even bad if i watched it now. The opening scene involves a young couple having sex and that was pretty awkward to watch next to your mom as a young boy. And also, Dane Cook! Wow what a moment that guy was having in the 2000s
Molly’s Game MUST go in
I know my man Chris Ryan would fight to at least yellow The Guardian. I really liked the movie am I crazy!?
Sean, not defending Open Range….the shame. Sullied his honor.
So is revenge a good flick? I’m a sucker for Tony Scott but haven’t seen the fan or revenge cuz I have always heard they sucked but the way Sean and Amanda talked about it for sure make me wanna watch it
Molly's Game must go in. I stand with Dobbs.
Hating on The Bodyguard and Dances with Wolves is insane, i mean come on, the appeal is pretty damn obvious there, they’re not perfect films, how in the hell is JFK in comparison considered ‘perfect’ for them with how much of its a rambling conspiracy theory
I’m on Amanda’s side in “Molly’s Game” debate. Also “The Bodyguard” is a CLASSIC.
Amanda turned into Hollywood Holmes on Molly's Game. "what are we doing here". No real credible reason, but let's settle in on the take.
I hate to be this guy, but my dad loved for the love of the game and upside of anger.
Field of Dreams: The book ("Shoeless Joe") is more intentionally magical realism than Gabriel Garcia Marquez. That is why the movie is so strange.
This was a rough one.
I love The Big Picture so much!!! I have never commented but I screamed at my phone when Amanda pretty much blew off Open Range and talked forever about Rumor Has It and Molly's Game. Unreal.
Sean, you had a lot of patience.
Saying Open Range is the same thing that happens in every western could be the same as every romantic comedy. I love movies. I love Amanda. This episode was a bad take.
New daughter on Amazon apparently
Molly's Game is out for Kevin Kostner
Testament sounds like the show Jericho.
waterworld DID NOT lose money!!!
Amanda, you have a microphone why are you constantly yelling
Two smooth brain takes on Dances with Wolves
Best golf movie? Happy Gilmore, you guys suck at your jobs.
1:46:48. Correct response.
At least he is taking swings. I don't like everything he does, but he's done a lot of good movies. And even though Horizon may or may not be any good, he does put his money where his mouth is. A real throwback. I'm not sure movie podcasters know what to make of him. And that is refreshing sometimes
You couldn’t find a more dismissive person than AD
OMG, The Bodyguard is on a short list of all-time worst movies ever made.
Molly's Game is AWFUL, is Amanda doing a bit? Lol.
Amanda is so loud I don't understand why not talk normal
Man dances eith wolves is good. The tempo is part it. You can watch it with tbe sound off and enjoy the chill. It's about finding your place of calm and people just before the storm of which you are a part blows through to destroy it all. My son watched it at 6 and liked it (though he wanted more wolf and was very upset about the soldiers shooting at him).
The rescue scene is great
They're regurgitating hot takes from the past. The answer to All their questions is.......He's Not A Wokie.
Just enjoy his movies and rewatch them all. He has not made a movie that you will not rewatch.
Amandas "open range" take is worthy of her losing her chair and it being given to CR
Dances with Wolves was shot in South Dakota not Colorado.
I wouldn't mind a de-aged insertion Costners scenes in the big chill (assuming they didn't survive)
I like pretty much everything The Ringer puts out, but this is the most amateurish and ill-researched bit of media that I’ve seen from this company. I enjoyed listening to it because I know who these people are, but if this was the first thing that I had seen under The Ringer umbrella I probably wouldn’t watch a second thing.
Why are they both nervous
Good subjects that are ruined by Amanda. So difficult to watch/listen to with a non cinephile. Which I guess is supposed to be the point of having a cinephile and a non cinephile. But really makes me want to turn it off
Field of Dreams is complete sentimental, stupid, maudlin nonsensical crap. I do not understand the love.
Please Amanda, make sure you cut off and interrupt Sean EVERY SINGLE TIME he speaks. As if the listeners are there for you, and not the host of the show. You don't even watch most of the movies, you get butt hurt over the stupidest things, and you are abrasive and rude. Amazing that you have this job when the ringer has a super talented female with Mallory Rubin. Would be interesting to see your job prospects if you weren't personal friends with Sean and his wife, along with Chris Ryan and his wife.
Nepotism is the foundation of Bill's entire media empire.
