- It's been described as the worst economic downturn in Indonesia since the 1998 Asian financial crisis. COVID-19 has brought the Indonesian economy to its knees. It has also reversed decades of progress in poverty alleviation in Southeast Asia's largest economy. More than 6 million jobs have been lost and 5 million more Indonesians have now fallen into poverty as a result of the pandemic. Will COVID-19 outbreak trigger another major economic crisis in Indonesia and push millions of Indonesians into extreme poverty? Will Indonesia see the repeat of the 1998 financial crisis as well as the political turmoil that gripped the nation soon after? Can Indonesia survive the challenge and recover from the devastating impact of the pandemic?

This is the problem with Indonesia. Unlike Singapore or Malaysia, the wealth gap in Indonesia is too huge. If Indonesia had a total lockdown like Singapore or Malaysia, what would happen to those poor people? On the other hand, Indonesia only had large scale 'social restrictions', which to be honest hasn't worked that up to this day, but still lets poor people work, although not all of them. The government did hand out some money to people who made less than a certain amount, but it really wasn't enough. A huge nation, separated by multiple islands, added with a wide wealth disparity, is certainly a task that any government would have a hard time handling.

@@aryoseno11 The government surely isn't in denial right now, but I agree that they should increase testing, especially swab as they are the most reliable so far in Indonesia. Unfortunately swab tests are very expensive (>Rp.2,000,000) and only a few could afford such tests.

I think if the government gives cash money he should accept it, if the government offers to transfer money to his bank account he can reject it. There is a risk for corruption if he not accept the cash money.

@ , thank you for your information , I don't who you are ,but I want to talk my experience visit the most remote area Southern Indonesia , ROTE ISLAND which border with Australian Sea , I see the people there work as Farmers , Livestock and Fishermen and they happy , average reached 80 years above and there is no suicide , Despite the house was small and very simple, No public transportation, electric, and water .

@@vincenty8483 From what i know, you need to have a negative covid test before entering Bali from any parts of Indonesia. Those from overseas including Indonesians must get themselves quarantined and tested twice. Indonesia wont do something that is making the impression of prioritizing foreigners than their fellow countrymen like that. Also, flights here in Indonesia nowadays isnt focused much on tourism like before but more to business trip or to visit family back home. Airlines wont filter these tourists as covid has "filtered" most people from travelling anyway.

We don’t neglect the fact that the virus exists, but the measures put into place to tackle the pandemic seem to do more harm to people than good. Lockdowns will have a devastating effect in people’s lives in the months ahead. Businesses are closing down and many people are losing their jobs. I had a business during the first lockdown and I had to close it down because it was impossible to make any money at all. We waited some months until things got better and by August we reopened the business in another location. Everything looked great again until the governor of Jakarta decided to put us in lockdown again and not allow restaurant to have people dine-in. The month of September has been horrible for our sales. I have 4 staff and all our profit had to be used to pay their salaries. If this month of October ends up having the same results, we will have no choice but to let staff go. I want to hire people and help them during this time, but lockdowns are killing businesses. They are not profitable! I feel the pain of the Indonesian people for not having enough money to live. We are all very stressed and anxious. I’m lucky I don’t have any children yet, but those with children must really going through hard times. We must stay strong together and hopefully governments will implement different measures not as drastically as lockdowns to have a less impact in the economy and still being able to save lives from the virus. I love you Indonesia 🇮🇩

@Robby Sukma Prayoga agree with you. Most of the citizen can't afford to fulfill their daily basic after their economies are hit by the pandemic. Lack of the land for farming is the problem, even if it was implemented with hydroponic system (ofc it takes more money). They also have much larger needs than villagers that some of them relies from villager's goods. We hope some days this pandemic could be vanished from Indonesia and all the things run just like before.

Right now Indonesia and many other country especially developtment country struggle with this problem. Many people work as day to day job, they work today for today's food. Let me just share one more problem: there are corruption in lower level hierarchy as well for the distribution to the needs such as at RT/RW level. No clarity of what actually given and can be taken used by the crook to take whatever given for families in need, this might involve some political agenda as well. There need to be system in-place to audit and make sure everything been placed correctly. For example, one instance one ministry gather data for people in need of Covid-19, i myself gather the data from the community of my wife in Jakarta, the assistance never arrived at the door. And there are instance of people that "having" taking more than people really in need and we never know why.
That's why corruption is the real virus in Indonesia for so long.
Based from my experienced.Some of the RT/RW did their job well and some of them are corrupted.Depends where you live...

What this Covid pandemic has taught us is that we have been living in the bubbles of unnecessary life style. In this pandemic, most people can live without air transport which bring them to places for holiday, visiting mall for shopping unnecessary things, hanging out at nights looking for entertainment and troubles, etc. Actually we can stay more at home spending with family that we unconsciously forget. We begin to see how important it is to be compassionate to others who struggle to fulfill end meets. We are suddenly more aware of how fulfilling is to help others, how happy to see other people smiling at you.
Covid has taught us that life is so vulnerable that we as human beings need to stop for a while to reflect on meaning and purpose of life, to rearrange our priorities in life, to add more humility and humbleness to our life, to help more other people, to live more simple life abandoning unnecessary excessive life styles.
I can not fathom how in condition we are in, some people can do corruption in this country.
This segment maybe okay as a story, but not much as an objective investigative reporting with concrete and constructive contribution to the problem at hand. How those specific individual stories are calculated into and become the actual macroeconomics analysis of Indonesia's economy is not depicted in the report. So at the end, it feels more like CNA is only fuelling the insinuation that Indonesia will somehow become a failed state. Why the constant and repetitive comparison between this pandemic with the 1998 crisis where the basic difference between the two is easily identifiable. 1998 was a crisis in Asia and for Indonesia was also partly caused by her own mistakes of corruption and collussion and the mishandling of its economy at that time that leads into a political and social crisis as well. While the Covid-19 crisis is not caused by Indonesia herself. We together with the rest of the world are the victim of this unprecendented virus spread. Even with the best economic policy and law enforcement, the question is how will be Indonesia's chance of economic survival in the midst of a global recession? So again, this video is like forcing a subliminal message that there is a looming political crisis in Indonesia that will challenge the current presidency. Is there a hidden political agenda from this kind of video?

The problem in Indonesia is that a lot of people who work everyday as sole business to support their family and do not pay taxes as their income is below the threshold are therefore not on the government book and are not registered as being poor and no help is available. I believe that a mandatory tax registration of every family should take place every year with income earned and when problem like covid-19 arise the money can be deposited in people's bank account or available at their "Desa" so no one will miss out! The government cannot help if 1/2 the people are not known to be in need!

The proposed system you mentioned above is not the case. The data relating to poor people in need are solely rely on the work of smallest community official (RT/RW). They should know their community members well, who are rich, who are desperate (poor). That is already the system for ages. If that system felt as not perfect and has many flaws, so those existing system should be fixed.
If we apply the new system like you mentioned above, i don't know, it might work or not at all. Because most of poor people don't understand much about those complicated self tax reporting, etc. Even middle class, i am sure not all of them have good understanding in regards to self reporting income tax, neither they have any.

I know what you are saying should be the solution but it is not. Not good passing law if there is no enforcement and this the major problem. I have had a lot of disscussions with my Indonesian friends that even think of having lockdown in huge city like Jakarta is just doomed to failed in same reson that you see in India, it will simply not work due to many day to day workers living under poor conditions and they should rather have used that they have a young population (avg 28 years old) not it is a tricky situation and all my bless to Indonesias wonderful people and hope to see you next year again ❤

I remember in 2005 when I left Indonesia to Singapore.... I lived in Karawang near Bekasi, the citarum river and its slums reminded me of Dharavi in Mumbai back home..... I am not saying India is better off than Indonesia but the vast wealth gap astonishes me in both countries especially Indonesia! Central Jakarta felt like a different country in all together compared to Karawang or Karawaci! The constant flooding and no proper drinking water... Yughhh!!! We had to leave ALL our furniture behind due to floods! Corruption in both countries need to be curbed! I still love Indonesia and India! I consider Indonesia as my second home! It is not an easy job to cure tens to hundreds of millions of poverty cells in a short time while they also have to outline the direction of the country. it is easy for others to talk to but they don't feel how hard it is to get out of poverty.

This Covid-19 ruins my life too as others. I only live by myself with no others to help. I lost my job since June and now in a struggle on finding one. I have to choose between pay rent and providing meals. If this pandemic lasted till next year, I must save the money to pay rent. Therefore, now I only eat one banana/day to survive. And, if my budgets for rent and meals are already all spent, and I don't have a new job, I will be homeless too like others. I still have my mobile phone so I can apply jobs online or so the company can easily reach for me if I get accepted. And I think if I must die because I don't eat for days/months, well let it be. I will gladly accept it.
