I’m surprised Emily Blunt didn’t receive an academy award nomination for this movie. She was a show-stealer and really sold her passion, as well as her anxiety
It's incredible how this movie still gets talked about even 14 years later after its release, one may think it would have a slow death but the fandom it's alive and well, Meryl was super as Miranda and that silver coifure being streep's idea just nailed it!!!
What's interesting is that Meryl Streep got the inspiration for her character's hairdo from the late Liz Tilberis; the former Editor in Chief of "Harper's Bazaar" magazine.
@@valeriaacm72 it’s worth it if you’ve seen the movie many times and want more from Andy, Emily and Miranda. But honestly, nothing extraordinary. The movie is much better - I’m sure many would agree with me. The story is very different, but at the same time very similar... it’s difficult to explain. I mean, the general idea is exactly the same, but how the story evolves is quite different. Especially considering Nigel is not part of the main plot AT ALL (he appears in only a few paragraphs) and Emily is actually a nice person!
Miranda a villain? What a ridiculous notion. Absurd really. Andy's friends are toxic, so is her boyfriend. So is Christian. You always know what you get with Miranda. She is tough but certainly not the villain of the film. She's the freaking Queen!

Her friends aren’t as toxic in the book. They were wretched in the movie! They may have hated her job but the way they treated her was obnoxious. Andi drove me nuts in the book because she was this weakling who allowed people to walk all over her. She was even worse in the sequel.
Of course why would a female narc be anything else than a pure hero, right? That's what we all aim for,isn't it? Well if all the other people were toxic just for not supporting Andy then Miranda was the pure evil, by a simple comparison. Toxicity just don't disappear when you're not sorry for it.
I know there's this new trend of defending miranda now because it's easy to watch some scenes and think about her as a tough go-getter, but I think we all need a reminder that sometimes bosses like these are just toxic people. Period. Andie stayed till 2 PM many nights, would often be there by 6 in the morning, had horrible pay that barely made her rent, and got lost in a life under a boss who was as unreasonable and unscrupulous as it gets (screwing over a valuable longtime colleague who had more than proved his worth). I get that a lot of things about miranda made her a good, tough mentor, but let's call it what it is - the work environment was just bizarre. I've recently left a job under a boss exactly like that, which is why the movie kinda comforted me a bit. My now-former boss would shout horribly everyday, keep passing comments on how he should never have hired women, would demand 14-hour workdays with no weekends (no, I'm serious. There were no weekends) and pay less than minimum wage. By 'less than', I mean like half of what you'd need to survive in my state. So yeah, Miranda can be a ruthless, iconic, and rather motivational character, but there's no point in getting ahead of ourselves and calling her an icon. Believe me - this just makes it okay for senior management to treat people (especially entry-level graduates) like absolute horseshit over time.
Honestly, half of the work is just about fullfilling their standards. I get that all the perfection is needed but arranging a flight in hurricane and getting a Harry Potter manuscript is too immature.
The movie not only depicted Anna and her vogue empire, but it is very similar to the other top design houses. I worked for Burberry long before this movie came out. I got the same treatment from my boss back then. I worked as a PA, and was running around like a slave or a lap dog. I laughed so much for relating to Andy when she went to the ball as I had to organise one major gala event for my ex boss too and with not one thank you since I joined. I don’t know how I lasted 6 months. Lunch time was typically 2:30 or 3pm if you are lucky. The narcs are for real across these fashion houses. They don’t care who or how they treat you, their egos so far up their asses. However I did enjoy the movie, all of my favorite actors were in there.
Looks like you completely missed the point of the movie. Everyone has a choice, and you don’t get to the top of your profession without making sacrifices. People don’t feel sorry for you in those jobs because it comes with the territory. There is always some one next in line waiting to take your place

Andrea’s friends and boyfriend were assholes, toxic and didn’t wanted her to rise up in her career only bc they wanted her to be what THEY wanted her to. When she changed her style in the movie and was happy about it, they started questioning her. When she started being interested in fashion and in her job , they were like “idk you anymore” and the worse is , at the end of the movie, the movie’s plot made it look like her changing and rising up to be like Meryl Streep’s characters was the problem, when it really is toxic manipulative friends holding her back.
You seem to be as shallow as Meryl Streep's character with those ideas :) I think that Andrea's friends would have been happy for her if is she pursued things of true importance. At least of true importance according to them. Some times in life people tend to disagree on that matter, but its only natural.

And also, even if she wasn’t pursuing things of “true importance” it’s not up to them to decide what should be important or relevant to her. If they were actually good friends they would’ve been happy for her pursuing something that matters to her regardless of their opinion of it as long as it isn’t unhealthy for her. If you have friends you don’t pick and choose what you support them about. Don’t have silly behaviours like taking their phones on a work call simply cause you don’t like their job, and don’t put them down over putting their necessities over yours, and specially not if it’s work . And on top of even when they put her down over her job they were so ready to accept the benefits that she had with it (like when she gifted her friend a bag). They were the definition of the people who just take and expect you to be there and the moment you aren’t serving them will complain about it, and it’s very clear that nobody needs people like that to hold them back. I’m not saying that Meryl Streep’s character was the good guy but she wasn’t supposed to be. Nowhere I said that family and friends shouldn’t be a priority in your life, simply that the people you have as a priority should be the ones holding you back and forbidding you to change only cause they don’t want to. The fact that you think I’m shallow bc I think the problem was her toxic relationships and not her becoming a professional says a lot about you. Not necessarily bad, simply a difference of priorities, still, not a reason to call people names like you just did.
I have to completely agree with you. It is shown very early in the movie that her friends make fun of the gay friend being an analyst. He says he already has his dream job which is a corporate analyst. They all laugh at him. Then he gets peer pressured into admitting his job sucks. That scene just becomes more and more jarring as I grow older. Not a good group of friends.
Am I the only who hated Andrea, her friends and her boyfriend? They were all so annoying, self-righteous and all they did was complain and judge others and each other.
And the entitlement! NYC is one of the publishing capitals in the world with young writers who just graduated flocking to the city. Just because she got all the A’s and gold stars doesn’t mean the perfect job is just waiting for her to arrive. On that note, I do like how the film at least shows her starting to appreciate the enterprise for the editorial feat it is.
I actually think that Miranda Priestly knew Andy Sach's journalistic talent (and was wasted as an assistant). So that's why Miranda raised the bar higher and higher, so Andy would realise that being an assistant is a waste of time, and know that she should be the journalist she came to New York to be.
That's a really interesting take on it, and plausible for the movie. That doesn't come through in the book; when Andi mentions having an ambition to work at The New Yorker, Miranda says something like "Why? It's just nuts and bolts, no glamor."
I didn’t like Andrea. She walked into something she knew isn’t her place and walked out as if she’s too good for it. (in the movie at least, never read the book)
Interasting my take was more that she wasn't willing to pay the price for that life. Not that she was too good she just realised it was not her, even if she tries and has success its not her.
Despite Miranda's diablolical sacasms, you could only see a woman who sacrifices her entire life to create such ravishing art works. In my opinion, she is an epitome of hard workers of whom fashion industry terribly needs. 😎👠
So true. Like when Nigel says “wake up, six. She’s just doing her job” Miranda seriously does work her a** off as editor in chief and her personal life has suffered because of it (failed marriages/divorces and very little time with her kids). She’s editor in chief - she *is* only doing her job, after all. So in a sense, it’s really not that surprising when she’s snippy or passive aggressive when appointments are cancelled, her lunch isn’t ready or her coffee isn’t there on time for a big meeting all-the-while she’s got a huge workload.
If you watch “ The September issue” you will realize that there are many similarities between Anna and Miranda. Obviously Miranda is a complete exaggeration, but the real Anna is as powerful and as tough as you might expect from watching the movie.
The movie was flattering to Anna Wintour in that it made her a strong woman in a tough world-the business world. She should be honored. It’s really a tribute to Ms. Wintour.
In reality, people like Anna deserve the label "devil". They care about themselves and are almost emotionless. When your boss don't have a sense of regular emotions, it's hard to work with them because you would think they are mean, unless you are about as mean.
A lot of British characters are rewritten for American audiences. The Girl on the Train was also set in England, London to be specific, but on screen they changed it to New York and had Emily Blunt play the token Brit. It’s all about the biggest market.

But I think American actress Meryl Streep was perfect casting for Miranda Priestley. I literally cannot picture anyone else to play her.
Speaking as the mom of a past Vogue Editor-in-Chief assistant, the movie resembles the real situation pretty closely but is definitely glorified for the screen. I don't believe Anna is as mean as Miranda. Intimidating yes, down right mean, no. There is a "book" that is delivered to her house in the evening, she used to eat steak for lunch which my daughter had to order and pick up, and she had a phone specifically used to communicate with the office when she was on call. On the other hand, none of the assistants go abroad with her and they only borrow from the"closet" for special events like the Met Gala. We get a kick out of the fact that everyone my daughter discusses this with, asks about the movie. The film has taken on a totally new meaning to us now that she knows the life first hand. She has since moved on to Features.

"I knew I was tall and thin, but I was short and fat there." This! I actually said this when I was modeling. I auditioned for a shoot in Germany once and the 6"0" size 2 model got it. I joked that I was too short and fat for the gig. I was 5"9" and size 4.
The conversation between Nigel and Andie were on point. Miranda had many demands as the editor in chief. Her cut throat do it demeanor is why she was the editor in chief.
Meryl Streep made Anna Wintour look better than she is. If she saw real, original talent, she showed respect and mentored. More importantly she understood why Ann Hathaway’s character would reject that life. Also, Miranda is chic, stylish....something AW will never be accused of having
Miranda was tough, I wouldn't call her a villain, however. More like an anti-hero. Ultimately Andy moves forward with her life and becomes the journalist she intended to be because she had self-respect and realized she wasn't into navigating power systems - despite the fact she did it well. Her intention was to always seek the truth, hence her pursuit of journalism. Miranda was a creative genius that wreaked havoc and stirred a sense of anxiety. People seemed compelled and indebted to her tyranny, as if its necessary to grow and create. I disagree with how Andy uses an analogy about Miranda's work style to that of a male. I think a male who exhibited those same tactics is arguably just as bad as a boss. Unfortunately, sexism would lead people to believe that the same strategies have less of a stigma amongst men than they do for women. Therefore, she is better arguing the perception - not the actions themselves. To Andy's credit, though, she still has not yet achieved full character development when she recounts this to Christian. You can definitely foster and cultivate a healthy work environment and still hold people accountable when leading. Buuuut... Is Miranda a fashion badass? Fuck yeah. Would I work for her? Maybe... lol def not for long tho.
Ok, I can recite this movie from beginning to end as this is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE MOVIE EVER! I think it's the story line and the fact that there is always another side to a story. No matter how hard, stern or prickly a person may seem, you never know what's going on in their life. With all Miranda's success professionally and all the people that bowed at her feet, she couldn't keep a husband or a stable home life. But girl, I did not know there was a sequel...... do tell😁😁😁

You can't be serious, the work schedule Miranda made for Andy barely sounds legal...She needs to work from 6 am to midnight, with no overwork pays. Miranda can interrupt her spare time and call her back to work whenever she wants. If she does not get stuff like getting an airplane in the middle of a hurricane or getting harry potter script before it's published done, (which should not be part of the job, she's an assistant not a maid), she is threatened to be fired from the company. Dedication to the work is good, but only within legal work time, 8 hours a day. That's the what the whole chicago labor movement was for, and in 21th century I can't believe someone is praising this type of exploitation. A boss like this in real life deserves a law suit.
Andy's friends couldnt stand the fact the she was changing. Change makes people uncomfortable. They were happy when Andy was where she was supposed to be, playing the role she always played in their lives. As soon as Andy started stepping up her game as in chasing after her dream, having ambition, upgrading her style and appearance her boyfriend and her friends didnt like it. They probably felt incompetent in their own lives because they were still doing the same things while Andy was starting to experience a whole new world and/or they started feeling Andy was competition for them. Most humans have the potential to feel competitive towards anyone and everyone under the right circumstances and I believe they all felt that. Initially they were comfortable when Andy was complaining and unhappy with her job, when she was being negative and hating her boss etc.. Then when Andy finally realized how lucky she actually was to have that job and when she started taking advantage of all the perks and embracing her new role/taking it seriously everyone flipped out. This is a clear sign that they didnt want her to evolve. The part that really bothered me was when her artsy friend got so angry at Andy at her art show because Andy had turned into "this glamazon that skulks around in corners with a random hot fashion guy". Its obvious that although there probably was a part of her that was looking out for Nate, she actually was jealous and the way she says "have fun in Paris", like obviously she was so jealous! Her artsy friend stated she had known Andy for 16 years so if that's the case why would she get SO upset right off the bat when she sees her talking to Christian and immediately jump to a negative conclusion if their friendship really was that strong? Like I would give my friend of 16 years the benefit of the doubt and talk to her normally and spill the tea together instead of having a fit and storming off while dismissively saying "have fun in Paris". She might as well have said I'm starting to hate you because you lost weight, your face and body are snatched, your clothes are high-end/ of the latest fashion trends, hot guys are talking to you left and right, you're going to Paris fashion week all expenses paid & getting free couture from it so anything you do will trigger me 😂
Miranda is not British. She clearly speaks in a dialect for the American stage (it’s called Standard American Speech. It’s basically our version of British RP. That’s why it sounds so formal.)
It still baffles me that this film is a modern classic. In my opinion, the credit for that goes mostly to Meryl Streep´s performance and the Costume, Hair & Make-up teams who made it into a visual feast. Plotwise, it´s extremely basic and had it not been for those two factors, it probably would have gone more or less unnoticed.
One of the most fascinating elements of The September Issue was how Anna's family perceives her job. She comes from a family of lawyers I believe and many of them find her work to be insignificant. There was even a part where Anna was with her daughter and expressed her desire to have her daughter work in fashion. Even the daughter seemed to diminish the value of Anna's role
The whole book is Andy complaining that she keeps getting into trouble for being late all the time, constantly taking smoke breaks, and being on the phone with her bf the whole time. "My boss is so mean! 😩" The book is trash.
Watched the movie, read both books. Movie script is actually better than the first book. Decades ago, in the early 80s, I worked in San Francisco for a high fashion store (no longer in business) and met several of the sportswear designers. There are definitely some similarities. The catiness, the obsession about fashion is true. I do hope they make a movie sequel!
Miranda is definitely a villain. In the book, she is so much more awful than in the movie. They had to humanize her for the film so audiences wouldn’t completely hate her.
we must have read a different book, as in the book Miranda was just very busy and didn't memorise the revolving door or assistance she had, so far that's pretty human to me, Andy seemed to think that she should be treated like royalty because she dained to work there, instead of being treated like every other slub would ever drew breath, that she was.

I wonder what the real ending was I always hated the ending of the movie. It just didn't make sense for things to happen that way. How do you abandon your job like THAT. How do you even get home to America?
SPOILERS......................................... The book is almost more unbelievable at the end. In the book, Lily had a drinking problem and had been in a very serious car accident after drinking and driving. Andy was going to try and tough it out and stay since she only had 2 days left in Paris at that point, and since Lily was in a coma and wouldn't know if she was there or not anyway. Miranda respects this choice and actually begins to talk about Andy's future (briefly). It comes to a head though when the twins can't come out to Paris because their passports are expired (the nanny had been fired so it didn't get taken care of). Miranda Blames Andy, and Andy pretty much loses it. She screams an obscenity at Miranda in front of cameras and everyone in the middle of Fashion Week. Andy is able to exchange her tickets and get on an earlier flight back home. Like in the movie, she ends up working at a different magazine. Miranda trashes her, but the person she is interviewing with doesn't take it seriously and hires her anyway, eventually becoming a great writing mentor to Andy. In the book, she never got with Christian, and Miranda's job was never in any kind of danger.
So why don't you read the book? It's that easy. And leaving a job when you're nothing but exploited is as easy as quitting while your salaries (savings, credits) up to that point should cover your ticket.

The video said the ending in the movie was very different from real life. In the movie, she wasn't "exploited". I can't think of any internship that means you'll wear a full wardrobe of the latest D&G, Gucci, Prada, etc. It's the dream gig for girls that want into that industry, and don't throw it all away for their boyfriend (like in fairy tales).

Didn't know Miranda was supposed to be British. She doesn't sound British in the movie. And I know Meryl can do the accent ( I saw her in The Iron Lady) Is it in the book? Obviously, I've not read it.
Honestly you don’t miss out on anything much by not reading it... But yeah in the book both Miranda and Nigel are British, and Emily is American (I think) but they let actors keep their original accents.
People who keep saying Andy's friend were the villian need a wake up call!! What's yall definition of a friend? My definition of a friend is someone who tells you the truth even when you don't want to hear it. Andy was changing and not for the better!! She had lost sight in what she wanted. She made excuses for the bad choices she started to make. We can chase our dreams but don't have to step on people to get there and that's exactly what she did! What she did to the other assistant. What she did to her boyfriend. Family is precious. That's why at the end Andy walked away from it all. She saw how it was changing her. She saw how she was literally walking with with devil. If it was so good for her she would have stayed! When a person brings out the best in you! You keep them around. Miranda brought out the worst in her! When Andy looked in that mirror during fashion week SHE didn't even know the woman who was looking back at her! That's what her friends was trying to tell her through this entire movie!!! But I truly believe in every bad choir there's a lesson to be learned. She learned it! You see so many rich ppl who argue in the car but when those cameras flash they put on that fake smile and get out the car inside they are dying and screaming. Be careful who life you want to imitate or you want to be. Because that person life you want can be looking at you and saying the same damn thing!! GOD BLESS YOU ALL

I personally think that it is a very impractical way of thinking towards life; Miranda saw potential in Andy so she started treating her more professionally as time passes which by the way, gave Andy a major personality development and even Andy had started to adapt and adjust with the environment yet, it is important to point out that Andy's friends kept demotivating her on name of "reminding her of her goals and passion". If you are an adult who knows the work environment in any industry take it corporate or fashion which infact are all heavily frustrating or even depressing then you would know that it is not practical. Everyday hundreds of people think of leaving their jobs for their dreams but it is rare to be like that; when you work in reality you know that you don't get to choose, noone gets to choose. The move was fiction for a reason because if you were in her position, would you have quit your job?

Yeah, I read the book years after watching the movie a lot of times. I absolutely hated the book while I absolutely love the movie. The "book Andie" is a lazy, grumpy, complaining person completely different from the "movie Andie". Is astounding how they could make such a great movie from such a terrible book.

You pleople seem to forget that Miranda wanted Andy to do impossible tasks (like arranging a flight in the middle of a storm, when no one was flying) and then got angry with her when she couldn't do it, even though it wasn't her fault. I lived that life working in fashion in Paris...only on the designing spectrum, didn't know if I was showing up to work for Jekyll or Hyde. The book is much better and gives a true perspective of the personality disorders one can find in fashion, the movie made Meryl Streep sympathetic and was really a disappointment. Imagine the intensity of the book and add in drug addiction and that was what I dealt with on a daily basis.
This has always been my go-to movie every time I need cheering up. Haha. I love this movie so much. I don't get tired of watching it again and again. :D
Andy’s friends were awful, especially her supposed best friend, the one who took thousands of free merch basking in her friend’s job, only to jump on her when she didn’t live up to the image. Because her friend having a non-marital relationship with no kids taking priority??? The bey-atch!
Emily Blunt (who played Emily Charlton) was truly the star of "The Devil Wears Prada", and should have been nominated for every award under the sun. She could never be replaced in that role. She WAS Emily Charlton. While Meryl was fabulous as Miranda Priestley, and I love her to bits, I still feel that the role was made for Glenn Close. Perhaps even Madeleine Stowe, Anjelica Houston or Joanna Lumley. While Meryl was nasty and often aloof, I felt that the character of Miranda in the book was far more fierce. Hence my choice of ladies above. Anne Hathaway, as Andrea Sachs, acted well, but probably could have been replaced by anyone, but the best choice would probably have been Amy Adams. I found Andrea rather whiny and irritating in the movie, unlike in the book. Stanley Tucci (as Nigel) was, like Emily Blunt, perfect for the role! The biggest question of all for me is, why was the role of Liz, played by Sarah Rafferty (Donna Paulsen in Suits) cut from the movie?
I was confused by the statement that just as Anna Wintour is British, so too was Miranda Priestly. Miranda was not British in the movie, nor did Meryl Streep portray her with a British accent. Other than that, interesting video. I keep meaning to read the book!
Miranda is not the villain. Andy's friends are the worst. Always trying to drag her down. They were jealous of her success and all around they were very unsupported. Miranda made Andy a better version of herself. She became confident and ready to conquer the world.
Basically in the novel. ‘Ignore this comment if you haven’t the novel yet’ so spoiler Alert. Miranda was British in the novel, plus she was seen to be incredibly hostile and insufferable to both Andi and Emily. Miranda also had an extremely bad temper and was quick to rage at both girls. She didn’t show any consideration towards others all the while she was manipulating people. In the long run she is a massive Karen. The main villain in the entire story. Nate wasn’t in the story, thank god. But Andi’s boyfriend was Alex and he was a school teacher. He was extremely supportive of Andi and her job but they eventually broke up because Alex wasn’t able to be with Andi all because of her job which led him to get tired of her not being here. Lilly was a somewhat comic relief character and was always getting into trouble from drinking too much to the point it led her to a car accident. Emily was the same in both the book and the film. Nigel was actually portrayed differently as he was written as a big hulkish muscular man but extremely flamboyant and was only in the story in a few pages and that was it.
Art directors and models may not recognize themseves in the movie but I was a general assistant in a haute couture brand headquarters (Faubourg St Honorée) and it's right on the spot! I had a colleague fired for not realizing who he was talking with and witnessed the second assistant cry following a "re-dressing" he got for a mistake that I made.
Yeah, let's all see for Miranda's side and forget how good it was, a woman facing one more divorce, two daughters who barely see their own mother who's always working more and more in benefit of things that when she finally dies ahe realises that EVERYTHING will be left behind to people who didn't even half of what she did reminding her she could have mates, people who admired and respected her but how many actually loved her? No wonder Andy's friends were worried about her, basically dedicating all her life to work and even being kissed by a guy when she had a boyfriend and ok with it! If we have to analyse the story, so let's check all the sides too, ok? Miranda may not be a terrible person but it doesn't change the facts of how she would attack and humiliate everyone else like she was some kind of goddess and not a human being.

I always didnt see miranda as a villan. She was famous glamourous intelligent i just thought andy learned something from the whole experience and miranda actually transformed andy for the better to her maximum potential but i understand that andy didnt wanna be seen as cold so she left .thats it . I read the book...it was okay. Andi was annoying on the book (impo). She finally grew a backbone at the end of the book. I found Andi more desirable as a character in the movie. Andi was even worse in the sequel. She allowed her husband and Emily to walk all over her (again).
Lauren Weisberger was an assistant to Fashion magazine editor Anna Wintour. Anna Wintour wore Prada shoes. The main character of the book is Miranda Priestly, who also wore Prada shoes, "The Devil" seems to be a reference to Ms Wintour/Priestly
I read the book (some years after seeing the film) and it's so slow and uninteresting at times I'm surprised I finished it. The bitterness leaps off the page and truly can't remember most of the details. The book definitely needed more editing. The film is 100% better.
Fantastic book! If you haven't read it, do so. Great opening with Andy trying to drive Miranda's stick in Manhattan of all places. Repeating a mantra of how to drive a stick and trying to talk on the phone and breaking the heel off of her ridiculously expensive boots, etc, etc. Great!!!!
You get so much more from your staf if you are polite. I've worked for pigs (95% of them male) but the real gentlemen got more from me than the pigs. There is no need for rudeness or ruthlessness ANYWHERE.
When I heard him say, "I rather you were a stripper pole-dancing; at least that involves some integrity." I thought, -- really??!! What an undermining statement!! It showed he could not handle her doing better than him. He had no issue when she had the makeover at all, he sexualized her. No intergrity with the boyfriend. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!!!
I read the book and saw the film. The film was very different. For example Andi's best friend Lilly is a party girl, who more or less (as I recall it) encourages Andi to go out with the young author she meets. ln the film, Lilly chastises Andi for even considering a guy outside of Alex. Alex is a school teacher, as I recall, not a budding chef. Most especially the character of Miranda Priestly is greatly softened. In the book she's an absolute gargoyle of a human being, impossible, capricious, demanding and abusive to her subordinates. In the film, she's much more human, which makes it possible to watch. Had they made that character as unpleasant in the movie as she was in the book, it would have been impossible to watch, I think. I haven't quite worked with a monster on the level of Ms. Priestly (in the book or movie) but I've had some difficult people to work with: the theater producer who only knew how to get things done by creating a crisis; the operations manager of a cultural center who would on a whim decide to add something to my job description without telling me, and then castigate me for not doing it well enough; the investment banker who stood behind me and told me how to edit a document and then said I'd done it wrong (that last one was, thankfully, a temp job). In Miranda Priestly I saw bits of each of those people. Regardless of those that contend that it doesn't capture the reality of the fashion industry, the film certainly accurately depicts the dynamics when working for difficult, impatient, entitled individuals.
I’m surprised Emily Blunt didn’t receive an academy award nomination for this movie. She was a show-stealer and really sold her passion, as well as her anxiety

The story is very different, but at the same time very similar... it’s difficult to explain. I mean, the general idea is exactly the same, but how the story evolves is quite different. Especially considering Nigel is not part of the main plot AT ALL (he appears in only a few paragraphs) and Emily is actually a nice person!

I know there's this new trend of defending miranda now because it's easy to watch some scenes and think about her as a tough go-getter, but I think we all need a reminder that sometimes bosses like these are just toxic people. Period. Andie stayed till 2 PM many nights, would often be there by 6 in the morning, had horrible pay that barely made her rent, and got lost in a life under a boss who was as unreasonable and unscrupulous as it gets (screwing over a valuable longtime colleague who had more than proved his worth). I get that a lot of things about miranda made her a good, tough mentor, but let's call it what it is - the work environment was just bizarre. I've recently left a job under a boss exactly like that, which is why the movie kinda comforted me a bit. My now-former boss would shout horribly everyday, keep passing comments on how he should never have hired women, would demand 14-hour workdays with no weekends (no, I'm serious. There were no weekends) and pay less than minimum wage. By 'less than', I mean like half of what you'd need to survive in my state. So yeah, Miranda can be a ruthless, iconic, and rather motivational character, but there's no point in getting ahead of ourselves and calling her an icon. Believe me - this just makes it okay for senior management to treat people (especially entry-level graduates) like absolute horseshit over time.

The movie not only depicted Anna and her vogue empire, but it is very similar to the other top design houses. I worked for Burberry long before this movie came out. I got the same treatment from my boss back then. I worked as a PA, and was running around like a slave or a lap dog. I laughed so much for relating to Andy when she went to the ball as I had to organise one major gala event for my ex boss too and with not one thank you since I joined. I don’t know how I lasted 6 months. Lunch time was typically 2:30 or 3pm if you are lucky. The narcs are for real across these fashion houses. They don’t care who or how they treat you, their egos so far up their asses. However I did enjoy the movie, all of my favorite actors were in there.

Andrea’s friends and boyfriend were assholes, toxic and didn’t wanted her to rise up in her career only bc they wanted her to be what THEY wanted her to. When she changed her style in the movie and was happy about it, they started questioning her. When she started being interested in fashion and in her job , they were like “idk you anymore” and the worse is , at the end of the movie, the movie’s plot made it look like her changing and rising up to be like Meryl Streep’s characters was the problem, when it really is toxic manipulative friends holding her back.

If you have friends you don’t pick and choose what you support them about. Don’t have silly behaviours like taking their phones on a work call simply cause you don’t like their job, and don’t put them down over putting their necessities over yours, and specially not if it’s work . And on top of even when they put her down over her job they were so ready to accept the benefits that she had with it (like when she gifted her friend a bag). They were the definition of the people who just take and expect you to be there and the moment you aren’t serving them will complain about it, and it’s very clear that nobody needs people like that to hold them back. I’m not saying that Meryl Streep’s character was the good guy but she wasn’t supposed to be. Nowhere I said that family and friends shouldn’t be a priority in your life, simply that the people you have as a priority should be the ones holding you back and forbidding you to change only cause they don’t want to. The fact that you think I’m shallow bc I think the problem was her toxic relationships and not her becoming a professional says a lot about you. Not necessarily bad, simply a difference of priorities, still, not a reason to call people names like you just did.

I have to completely agree with you. It is shown very early in the movie that her friends make fun of the gay friend being an analyst. He says he already has his dream job which is a corporate analyst. They all laugh at him. Then he gets peer pressured into admitting his job sucks. That scene just becomes more and more jarring as I grow older. Not a good group of friends.

I actually think that Miranda Priestly knew Andy Sach's journalistic talent (and was wasted as an assistant). So that's why Miranda raised the bar higher and higher, so Andy would realise that being an assistant is a waste of time, and know that she should be the journalist she came to New York to be.

That's a really interesting take on it, and plausible for the movie. That doesn't come through in the book; when Andi mentions having an ambition to work at The New Yorker, Miranda says something like "Why? It's just nuts and bolts, no glamor."

Miranda seriously does work her a** off as editor in chief and her personal life has suffered because of it (failed marriages/divorces and very little time with her kids). She’s editor in chief - she *is* only doing her job, after all. So in a sense, it’s really not that surprising when she’s snippy or passive aggressive when appointments are cancelled, her lunch isn’t ready or her coffee isn’t there on time for a big meeting all-the-while she’s got a huge workload.
If you watch “ The September issue” you will realize that there are many similarities between Anna and Miranda. Obviously Miranda is a complete exaggeration, but the real Anna is as powerful and as tough as you might expect from watching the movie.
The movie was flattering to Anna Wintour in that it made her a strong woman in a tough world-the business world. She should be honored. It’s really a tribute to Ms. Wintour.

Speaking as the mom of a past Vogue Editor-in-Chief assistant, the movie resembles the real situation pretty closely but is definitely glorified for the screen. I don't believe Anna is as mean as Miranda. Intimidating yes, down right mean, no. There is a "book" that is delivered to her house in the evening, she used to eat steak for lunch which my daughter had to order and pick up, and she had a phone specifically used to communicate with the office when she was on call. On the other hand, none of the assistants go abroad with her and they only borrow from the"closet" for special events like the Met Gala. We get a kick out of the fact that everyone my daughter discusses this with, asks about the movie. The film has taken on a totally new meaning to us now that she knows the life first hand. She has since moved on to Features.

Meryl Streep made Anna Wintour look better than she is. If she saw real, original talent, she showed respect and mentored. More importantly she understood why Ann Hathaway’s character would reject that life. Also, Miranda is chic, stylish....something AW will never be accused of having
Miranda was tough, I wouldn't call her a villain, however. More like an anti-hero. Ultimately Andy moves forward with her life and becomes the journalist she intended to be because she had self-respect and realized she wasn't into navigating power systems - despite the fact she did it well. Her intention was to always seek the truth, hence her pursuit of journalism. Miranda was a creative genius that wreaked havoc and stirred a sense of anxiety. People seemed compelled and indebted to her tyranny, as if its necessary to grow and create. I disagree with how Andy uses an analogy about Miranda's work style to that of a male. I think a male who exhibited those same tactics is arguably just as bad as a boss. Unfortunately, sexism would lead people to believe that the same strategies have less of a stigma amongst men than they do for women. Therefore, she is better arguing the perception - not the actions themselves. To Andy's credit, though, she still has not yet achieved full character development when she recounts this to Christian. You can definitely foster and cultivate a healthy work environment and still hold people accountable when leading. Buuuut... Is Miranda a fashion badass? Fuck yeah. Would I work for her? Maybe... lol def not for long tho.
Ok, I can recite this movie from beginning to end as this is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE MOVIE EVER! I think it's the story line and the fact that there is always another side to a story. No matter how hard, stern or prickly a person may seem, you never know what's going on in their life. With all Miranda's success professionally and all the people that bowed at her feet, she couldn't keep a husband or a stable home life. But girl, I did not know there was a sequel...... do tell😁😁😁

You can't be serious, the work schedule Miranda made for Andy barely sounds legal...She needs to work from 6 am to midnight, with no overwork pays. Miranda can interrupt her spare time and call her back to work whenever she wants. If she does not get stuff like getting an airplane in the middle of a hurricane or getting harry potter script before it's published done, (which should not be part of the job, she's an assistant not a maid), she is threatened to be fired from the company. Dedication to the work is good, but only within legal work time, 8 hours a day. That's the what the whole chicago labor movement was for, and in 21th century I can't believe someone is praising this type of exploitation. A boss like this in real life deserves a law suit.
Andy's friends couldnt stand the fact the she was changing. Change makes people uncomfortable. They were happy when Andy was where she was supposed to be, playing the role she always played in their lives. As soon as Andy started stepping up her game as in chasing after her dream, having ambition, upgrading her style and appearance her boyfriend and her friends didnt like it. They probably felt incompetent in their own lives because they were still doing the same things while Andy was starting to experience a whole new world and/or they started feeling Andy was competition for them. Most humans have the potential to feel competitive towards anyone and everyone under the right circumstances and I believe they all felt that. Initially they were comfortable when Andy was complaining and unhappy with her job, when she was being negative and hating her boss etc.. Then when Andy finally realized how lucky she actually was to have that job and when she started taking advantage of all the perks and embracing her new role/taking it seriously everyone flipped out. This is a clear sign that they didnt want her to evolve. The part that really bothered me was when her artsy friend got so angry at Andy at her art show because Andy had turned into "this glamazon that skulks around in corners with a random hot fashion guy". Its obvious that although there probably was a part of her that was looking out for Nate, she actually was jealous and the way she says "have fun in Paris", like obviously she was so jealous! Her artsy friend stated she had known Andy for 16 years so if that's the case why would she get SO upset right off the bat when she sees her talking to Christian and immediately jump to a negative conclusion if their friendship really was that strong? Like I would give my friend of 16 years the benefit of the doubt and talk to her normally and spill the tea together instead of having a fit and storming off while dismissively saying "have fun in Paris". She might as well have said I'm starting to hate you because you lost weight, your face and body are snatched, your clothes are high-end/ of the latest fashion trends, hot guys are talking to you left and right, you're going to Paris fashion week all expenses paid & getting free couture from it so anything you do will trigger me 😂
Miranda is not British. She clearly speaks in a dialect for the American stage (it’s called Standard American Speech. It’s basically our version of British RP. That’s why it sounds so formal.)

It still baffles me that this film is a modern classic. In my opinion, the credit for that goes mostly to Meryl Streep´s performance and the Costume, Hair & Make-up teams who made it into a visual feast. Plotwise, it´s extremely basic and had it not been for those two factors, it probably would have gone more or less unnoticed.
One of the most fascinating elements of The September Issue was how Anna's family perceives her job. She comes from a family of lawyers I believe and many of them find her work to be insignificant. There was even a part where Anna was with her daughter and expressed her desire to have her daughter work in fashion. Even the daughter seemed to diminish the value of Anna's role
The whole book is Andy complaining that she keeps getting into trouble for being late all the time, constantly taking smoke breaks, and being on the phone with her bf the whole time. "My boss is so mean! 😩" The book is trash.

Watched the movie, read both books. Movie script is actually better than the first book. Decades ago, in the early 80s, I worked in San Francisco for a high fashion store (no longer in business) and met several of the sportswear designers. There are definitely some similarities. The catiness, the obsession about fashion is true. I do hope they make a movie sequel!
Miranda is definitely a villain. In the book, she is so much more awful than in the movie. They had to humanize her for the film so audiences wouldn’t completely hate her.

we must have read a different book, as in the book Miranda was just very busy and didn't memorise the revolving door or assistance she had, so far that's pretty human to me, Andy seemed to think that she should be treated like royalty because she dained to work there, instead of being treated like every other slub would ever drew breath, that she was.
I read the book and really I prefer the movie. I couldn't stand Andy from the book. This is a case in which the movie is better than the book.

I wonder what the real ending was I always hated the ending of the movie. It just didn't make sense for things to happen that way. How do you abandon your job like THAT. How do you even get home to America?

The book is almost more unbelievable at the end.
In the book, Lily had a drinking problem and had been in a very serious car accident after drinking and driving. Andy was going to try and tough it out and stay since she only had 2 days left in Paris at that point, and since Lily was in a coma and wouldn't know if she was there or not anyway. Miranda respects this choice and actually begins to talk about Andy's future (briefly). It comes to a head though when the twins can't come out to Paris because their passports are expired (the nanny had been fired so it didn't get taken care of). Miranda Blames Andy, and Andy pretty much loses it. She screams an obscenity at Miranda in front of cameras and everyone in the middle of Fashion Week. Andy is able to exchange her tickets and get on an earlier flight back home. Like in the movie, she ends up working at a different magazine. Miranda trashes her, but the person she is interviewing with doesn't take it seriously and hires her anyway, eventually becoming a great writing mentor to Andy. In the book, she never got with Christian, and Miranda's job was never in any kind of danger.
So why don't you read the book? It's that easy. And leaving a job when you're nothing but exploited is as easy as quitting while your salaries (savings, credits) up to that point should cover your ticket.

I think its weird for girls that age to even think about marriage. This is not 1950. In America, we need 2 incomes. Unless you're just hoping to marry a millionaire... And they're just shipping in foreign "brides" now.

Honestly you don’t miss out on anything much by not reading it... But yeah in the book both Miranda and Nigel are British, and Emily is American (I think) but they let actors keep their original accents.
The assistant makes fun of the boss for having a fake accent in the book if I remember right.
People who keep saying Andy's friend were the villian need a wake up call!! What's yall definition of a friend? My definition of a friend is someone who tells you the truth even when you don't want to hear it. Andy was changing and not for the better!! She had lost sight in what she wanted. She made excuses for the bad choices she started to make. We can chase our dreams but don't have to step on people to get there and that's exactly what she did! What she did to the other assistant. What she did to her boyfriend. Family is precious. That's why at the end Andy walked away from it all. She saw how it was changing her. She saw how she was literally walking with with devil. If it was so good for her she would have stayed! When a person brings out the best in you! You keep them around. Miranda brought out the worst in her! When Andy looked in that mirror during fashion week SHE didn't even know the woman who was looking back at her! That's what her friends was trying to tell her through this entire movie!!! But I truly believe in every bad choir there's a lesson to be learned. She learned it! You see so many rich ppl who argue in the car but when those cameras flash they put on that fake smile and get out the car inside they are dying and screaming. Be careful who life you want to imitate or you want to be. Because that person life you want can be looking at you and saying the same damn thing!! GOD BLESS YOU ALL
Thank you! Finally someone who did watch the movie and understood... The lesson is be true to yourself, not to die for a job, no matter if every girl in the country wants it! (Honestly, I tought I was the only one who didn't hate her friends and boyfriend, that much...)
I personally think that it is a very impractical way of thinking towards life; Miranda saw potential in Andy so she started treating her more professionally as time passes which by the way, gave Andy a major personality development and even Andy had started to adapt and adjust with the environment yet, it is important to point out that Andy's friends kept demotivating her on name of "reminding her of her goals and passion". If you are an adult who knows the work environment in any industry take it corporate or fashion which infact are all heavily frustrating or even depressing then you would know that it is not practical. Everyday hundreds of people think of leaving their jobs for their dreams but it is rare to be like that; when you work in reality you know that you don't get to choose, noone gets to choose. The move was fiction for a reason because if you were in her position, would you have quit your job?
Nah, her friends and bf definitely step on her. They love andy for giving them designer bag and lingerie for free but hate her job. Where do you think andy got those expensive things? From her office!

I lived that life working in fashion in Paris...only on the designing spectrum, didn't know if I was showing up to work for Jekyll or Hyde. The book is much better and gives a true perspective of the personality disorders one can find in fashion, the movie made Meryl Streep sympathetic and was really a disappointment. Imagine the intensity of the book and add in drug addiction and that was what I dealt with on a daily basis.
This has always been my go-to movie every time I need cheering up. Haha. I love this movie so much. I don't get tired of watching it again and again. :D
Andy’s friends were awful, especially her supposed best friend, the one who took thousands of free merch basking in her friend’s job, only to jump on her when she didn’t live up to the image. Because her friend having a non-marital relationship with no kids taking priority??? The bey-atch!
Emily Blunt (who played Emily Charlton) was truly the star of "The Devil Wears Prada", and should have been nominated for every award under the sun. She could never be replaced in that role. She WAS Emily Charlton. While Meryl was fabulous as Miranda Priestley, and I love her to bits, I still feel that the role was made for Glenn Close. Perhaps even Madeleine Stowe, Anjelica Houston or Joanna Lumley. While Meryl was nasty and often aloof, I felt that the character of Miranda in the book was far more fierce. Hence my choice of ladies above. Anne Hathaway, as Andrea Sachs, acted well, but probably could have been replaced by anyone, but the best choice would probably have been Amy Adams. I found Andrea rather whiny and irritating in the movie, unlike in the book. Stanley Tucci (as Nigel) was, like Emily Blunt, perfect for the role! The biggest question of all for me is, why was the role of Liz, played by Sarah Rafferty (Donna Paulsen in Suits) cut from the movie?

I was confused by the statement that just as Anna Wintour is British, so too was Miranda Priestly. Miranda was not British in the movie, nor did Meryl Streep portray her with a British accent. Other than that, interesting video. I keep meaning to read the book!

Miranda is not the villain. Andy's friends are the worst. Always trying to drag her down. They were jealous of her success and all around they were very unsupported. Miranda made Andy a better version of herself. She became confident and ready to conquer the world.

Miranda was British in the novel, plus she was seen to be incredibly hostile and insufferable to both Andi and Emily. Miranda also had an extremely bad temper and was quick to rage at both girls. She didn’t show any consideration towards others all the while she was manipulating people. In the long run she is a massive Karen. The main villain in the entire story.
Nate wasn’t in the story, thank god. But Andi’s boyfriend was Alex and he was a school teacher. He was extremely supportive of Andi and her job but they eventually broke up because Alex wasn’t able to be with Andi all because of her job which led him to get tired of her not being here.
Lilly was a somewhat comic relief character and was always getting into trouble from drinking too much to the point it led her to a car accident.
Emily was the same in both the book and the film.
Nigel was actually portrayed differently as he was written as a big hulkish muscular man but extremely flamboyant and was only in the story in a few pages and that was it.
A duet performance of two great performers. Every scene is riveting and hilarious.

Art directors and models may not recognize themseves in the movie but I was a general assistant in a haute couture brand headquarters (Faubourg St Honorée) and it's right on the spot! I had a colleague fired for not realizing who he was talking with and witnessed the second assistant cry following a "re-dressing" he got for a mistake that I made.

Yeah, let's all see for Miranda's side and forget how good it was, a woman facing one more divorce, two daughters who barely see their own mother who's always working more and more in benefit of things that when she finally dies ahe realises that EVERYTHING will be left behind to people who didn't even half of what she did reminding her she could have mates, people who admired and respected her but how many actually loved her? No wonder Andy's friends were worried about her, basically dedicating all her life to work and even being kissed by a guy when she had a boyfriend and ok with it! If we have to analyse the story, so let's check all the sides too, ok? Miranda may not be a terrible person but it doesn't change the facts of how she would attack and humiliate everyone else like she was some kind of goddess and not a human being.

I always didnt see miranda as a villan. She was famous glamourous intelligent i just thought andy learned something from the whole experience and miranda actually transformed andy for the better to her maximum potential but i understand that andy didnt wanna be seen as cold so she left .thats it . Just a good experience .( sorry for my writing im not english)
Question to you all: was the book much better? Because I always found the movie lacking. Miranda didn't feel evil enough and the job seemed kind of normal to me. I wish it had been a tad more dramatic I guess?

I read the book...it was okay. Andi was annoying on the book (impo). She finally grew a backbone at the end of the book. I found Andi more desirable as a character in the movie. Andi was even worse in the sequel. She allowed her husband and Emily to walk all over her (again).

Lauren Weisberger was an assistant to Fashion magazine editor Anna Wintour. Anna Wintour wore Prada shoes. The main character of the book is Miranda Priestly, who also wore Prada shoes, "The Devil" seems to be a reference to Ms Wintour/Priestly
I read the book (some years after seeing the film) and it's so slow and uninteresting at times I'm surprised I finished it. The bitterness leaps off the page and truly can't remember most of the details. The book definitely needed more editing. The film is 100% better.

Fantastic book! If you haven't read it, do so. Great opening with Andy trying to drive Miranda's stick in Manhattan of all places. Repeating a mantra of how to drive a stick and trying to talk on the phone and breaking the heel off of her ridiculously expensive boots, etc, etc. Great!!!!
You get so much more from your staf if you are polite. I've worked for pigs (95% of them male) but the real gentlemen got more from me than the pigs. There is no need for rudeness or ruthlessness ANYWHERE.
That book was one of the worst novels I've ever read.

When I heard him say, "I rather you were a stripper pole-dancing; at least that involves some integrity." I thought, -- really??!! What an undermining statement!! It showed he could not handle her doing better than him. He had no issue when she had the makeover at all, he sexualized her. No intergrity with the boyfriend. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!!!

I read the book and saw the film. The film was very different. For example Andi's best friend Lilly is a party girl, who more or less (as I recall it) encourages Andi to go out with the young author she meets. ln the film, Lilly chastises Andi for even considering a guy outside of Alex. Alex is a school teacher, as I recall, not a budding chef. Most especially the character of Miranda Priestly is greatly softened. In the book she's an absolute gargoyle of a human being, impossible, capricious, demanding and abusive to her subordinates. In the film, she's much more human, which makes it possible to watch. Had they made that character as unpleasant in the movie as she was in the book, it would have been impossible to watch, I think.
I haven't quite worked with a monster on the level of Ms. Priestly (in the book or movie) but I've had some difficult people to work with: the theater producer who only knew how to get things done by creating a crisis; the operations manager of a cultural center who would on a whim decide to add something to my job description without telling me, and then castigate me for not doing it well enough; the investment banker who stood behind me and told me how to edit a document and then said I'd done it wrong (that last one was, thankfully, a temp job).
In Miranda Priestly I saw bits of each of those people. Regardless of those that contend that it doesn't capture the reality of the fashion industry, the film certainly accurately depicts the dynamics when working for difficult, impatient, entitled individuals.
