What are some of your favorite films that do a great job of jumping right into the action and quickly setting up the story?
The Room.
Jumping right into action without setting up the story for the *3 sex scenes in the first 30 minutes*
Lilo & Stitch
The Dark Knight in that every scene and every line of dialogue sets something up. The very first scene, while not introducing the protagonist right away, because it’s a sequel, it introduces the antagonist first and sets up his character while the mob’s money becomes a major plot point in the story. Perfection.

I would love to see you do a video on Mean Girls, which I think has great structure and character development in addition to being incredibly funny and entertaining 😊

The Devil Wears Prada is such a great film. It drives me crazy when it's brushed off as a "chick flick" in the realm of 27 Dresses or How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days. The story is familiar but never feels unoriginal, the production design is outstanding, the dialogue is efficient without feeling rushed and the acting (particularly Meryl and Emily) is OUTSTANDING. Anyone off-put by the females protagonists or fashion elements is a fool.
Devil Wears Prada and 27 Dresses were actually written by the same person, Aline Brosh McKenna!
Apparently Heathers was also called a chic flick.

I've seen this movie more times than I care to count. It's utterly brilliant.
+Daniel Jensen oh god, me too. In my honest opinion, the best Satire ever, not just because it's way more subtile than, let's say, Thank You For Smoking or Fight Club (both of which i still like of course) but also because it still treats its subject with much more respect.
Also it has the literal Queen of Hollywood, Meryl Fucking Streep in one of her best roles ever!

it gives us a view into a specific industry, while showing how that can change and corrupt people. It also complains about said industry, for example by Nigel and Miranda constantly making fun of Andi's size 6, even though Anne Hathaway is actually very thin, just showing the unrealistic ideals of the fashion world. That's just one example

Miranda would appreciate Thanos ability to make tough decisions he deems necessary. She wouldn't say it but, she would give him a nod for using gold and yellow undertones in his costume to offset against his purple skintone.

Much better than "Battle stations everyone." It seems like the cast had a descent amount of leeway with the dialogue. I like it when actors get an opportunity to make small changes to the lines to match their characters better.

I have loved The Devil Wears Prada since the very young age but through the years I couldn’t properly explain why. I loved the characters, the plot, the pace of the story and especially the ending. Not a long time ago I feel I finally came to an answer. It has a smart well-done scenery and it’s what makes already a good movie a great one. It has believable characters who I truly care about and who came through an evolution. And it has a moral in it. Yes, it is a story which takes place in a fashion industry. But it is much more than just a story about the fashion and building a career in it. And I love it.
its like david fincher says, movies are mostly about the ways you present the idea. i loved the part where we see the girl remove her flipflops and get into a stiletto, its just such an interesting point of view plus the thing with the comparisons in the beginning of the movie, i mean its really very fincher esque in some way

Such an underrated movie. I always thought it was really good.
Strange. I feel like it's very overrated. Every basic fashion-gay quotes this movie like the Bible and pretends they're Miranda Priestly when they don't even qualify to be the security guard in the lobby.
I think it's overrated for the wrong reasons, like "Mean Girls". Both movies appeal to female and gay audiences who focus solely on the superficial aspects of them, in the fashion, style and bitchiness of the characters, when those movies are actually deeper and more meaningful than people give them credit for.
Is it underrated? I thought the general consensus was that it was pretty good. '-'
Just coz people know its name, does not mean it has prestige. In my experience, any of the American films that I have watched which are specifically targeted towards women don't really get regailed for their greatness as frequently as other genre films. Barring a few exceptions. (If Michael does anything on Legally Blonde I will _scream._ With joy.)
Quotes and memes and references is how we remember films in the everyday, you guys. Their is definitely discourse on these films as well. Not all of the love is "superficial". You just need to look for it. The women and the gay folk do not disappoint. :P
I just saw an extremely popular and fairly old post on Tumblr a few days ago about Regina's Mum in Mean Girls. She comes off across as a pretty dumb parent who is trying so hard to feel young like her daughter that she ignores all her bad behaviour? Well, the people in the post were discussing the scene where she walks in on Regina banging her boyfriend and only offers condoms and has no other reaction. They argued that she was actually being a pretty competent parent by letting her "wild child" do what she wanted with appropriate safeguards (condoms, in this case) so that Regina does not lash out and do much worse things. And that her desperation to be friends with her daughters' friends is kinda sweet, even if it is cringey.
Hmm this movie was acclaimed and very finanically successful. Underrated isnt necessarily the word I'd use. Maybe unappreciated is a better one.
People underestimate this movie because it’s driven by women, SO much can be learned from its script, it’s so tight

Lauren Asay , I agree. It is why some films succeed, and others flounder in general. It projects, rather than confuses the characters' conflict.

Lauren Asay I've always thought that. The theme being women & fashion centric it's probably never been treated seriously enough as the well made film it really is.
Great analysis, I really like that you did a movie that might not be considered "high brow" (whatever that means), and showed how meticulous any successful script needs to be, no matter what genre it is in!
exactly, a movie that isn't considered "high-brow" is just a code word for a movie that's main target audience is women, so people refuse to take it seriously

Looking back, Nigel (Stanley Tucci’s character) is probably my favorite type of character; one that’s known & worked with the antagonist the longest, and is therefore unphased by intimidation. It feels like he can openly disagree with Miranda & have a valid reason for it (from Miranda’ perspective).
I'm slightly embarrassed to say that The Devil Wears Prada is one of my favorite movies. It's not the "Godfather" or "Shawshank Redemption". But I love every minute of it. I also want to point out how brilliant it is. I read the book after watching the movie but I have to say the this is one of the rare moment where the film is so much better than the book. The screenwriter is a genius. She imbued the character with witty remarks, humor, and personable traits that are lacking in the book. I wished you'd do the whole movie instead of just the first 10 pages :)
remsan03 I used to feel that way too 😂 but mainly because some people may view it as a superficial movie, when in reality as a young woman myself I’m just fascinated by the whole storyline of Andy finding herself, her character development that came from her job and the influence from other people and how she still managed to stay independent and strong and stood up to what she thought was right. I’m not gonna lie, I love the whole fashion, sass, glamour aspects of it too but I think the coloration of those both things is what really makes me like this movie so much. I’m so jealous of the people who haven’t watched it 157 times already 😭

@@ClintLoweTube Finishing is very important, but @Paul Prince, PLAN things first. Othewise you can end up with 100 pages of not much value. It's a very common effect in beginners (been there). Instead, spend some time developing your characters and planning scenes from beginning to end, focusing on the climax, as that's the most important scene in the whole movie. Once you got that, you can start working backwards. Good luck!

Before I watched your video on When Harry Meets Sally, I tended to overlook rom coms and movies that were mainly aimed for women. But with that video and now this, you have made me realize my mistake; these screenplays are just as brilliant!

Eh it's just like with superhero movies, for every Guardians of the Galaxy there's a Thor: The Dark World or a Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. And for every Devil wears Prada or Mean Girls there's one of those dime-a-dozen Hallmark romcoms. But broadening your horizons is always good! I've tried to that myself lately, made me see a lot of movies I'd never have thought I'd love and come away pleasently surprised.

Bridesmaids is a fantastic one as well. I didn’t give it a chance until I heard it was nominated the Academy Award for its screenplay and Supporting Actress Melissa McCarthy. One of the funniest comedies I’ve seen, and it knows how to tell a damn good story. Lol
@@iicalcipheriim Do you mean romcoms of movies that surprised me? If the first, When Harry met Sally is brilliant, Notting Hill, About a Boy. If the second one a movie that really surprised me was Don't look now. I'm usually not one for drama's but this one was beautiful and haunting at the same time. A Star is Born was also really good, and I dislike musicals and drama so it kinda blew me away how good of a movie this was

I wouldn't be surprised because John has seen the movie seventy-five times. It's also how he met Emily Blunt; who is now his wife and together they have two beautiful daughters. In a bizarre twist of irony; Stanley Tucci is now Emily's brother in law as he married her sister Felicity in 2012. Stanley first met Felicity at Emily and John's wedding in 2010; only a few months after his first wife Kathryn had died from breast cancer.

Was your experience anything like the film?
@@amyk9813 yes and no. I was a student when I stopped fashion, so yes bc the people and environment was quite similar, from the entitlement and inside jokes abt body image. No bc I never got to participate in a professional extent, but I already saw how the professional part of it was, and it's similar to what the film showed. Basically, I had no plans to further sacrifice myself for smth knew was no longer for me. to this day I'm so glad I walked away from fashion.

Wonderful! One of your best. Compare/contrast is under-examined in screenwriting. It's a key part of "show don't tell." And I also think that too few people see the first ten pages as a microcosm of the whole script, which you emphasize.

Having requests always help push in the right direction! I agree with your sentiment that it's probably more valuable for beginning writers to look at super solid "normal" films that more experimental films like Pulp Fiction. I know I've learned a lot of valuable lessons from looking at TDWP.
Yeah, I was more into how it gave you immediate access to the characters but then was able to play around with that. Like how later in the movie you start disliking the decisions Andie makes and there are a couple flashes of Miranda's humanity. The topic you picked was probably more worth talking about though, especially since you haven't specifically discussed how to start a movie in any of your other videos and that's arguably one of the most important aspects of writing a story. Always look forward to more of these.

My favorite movie is Adaptation (2002), with Charlie Kaufman doing a monologue of how he desperately
wants change, despite his lack of desire to finish a screenplay for a book that rarely has a story. Another is Punch-Drunk Love (2002; same year) of how Paul Thomas Anderson introduces Barry Egan being small to the world, the complexity of how he"s anxious of being himself and the story of how he learns to stand up for himself and love Lena.
How about doing opposite michael. Take underrated film and explain what makes the film bad. And how to fix them. Your channel is very useful. Thanks, greeting from Indonesia.

Well don’t use Harry Potter! Harry Potter is a terrible example of an adapted screenplay
@@Carina5707 maybe a lot o people will disagree with me but i thing some of the Harry Potter movies are awesome works of adaptation. These are Prisioner of Azkaban and Order of Phoenix. I know a lot of fans dont like them because of the changes to the book but i think the movie gets the job making the narrative sharpier and great for cinematic pruposes. It's a pitty that David Yates isn't a great director as Cuarón. Because, in the right hands, Order of Phoenix AND Fantastic Beasts 1 and 2 would be 10 times greater than actually is. BUT also for compare, if i can choose a book a adaptation to analize, i would go for Hunger Games. The first one. I think is a superb adaptation and not also gets de book right as also expands the universe and add great features that make the movie a unique experience.
Heitor Oliveira same. I think hunger games is excellent. I think the Harry Potter films 1-3 are decent, but 4-7 are garbage.

This is fantastic. I love TDWP, and think it's so tightly-written through the whole movie. I'd love to see an exploration of a movie that presents itself as a self-aware movie throughout, breaking the 4th wall and letting the audience into the fact that it's all a show. My example would be "The Muppet Movie," where the first 5 minutes or so are literally the premiere of the movie you're about to see, ending with Robin the Frog asking Kermit if this is "really" how the Muppets began, and Kermit saying, "Well, it's approximately what happened..."

Been getting really into film techniques and directing choices used to make good films great, and having subscribed to nerdwriter and now you see it, i came across this and it instantly earned my subscription. Such an incredibly well thought out discussion of the importance of the beginning. Just goes to show how much time and effort needs to be put into an entire film before a single shot is even taken. Accompanied by some beautiful editing and pacing, this video is perfect!

I’ve thought about this topic frequently. When A Clockwork Orange was released, at that time the violence it depicted was considered quite extreme. By today’s standards, it’s relatively tame. I’d also like to see Michael delve into the evolution of ‘gratuitous ‘ violence in cinema.

@@Nhoj31neirbo47 interestingly, a clockwork orange is perhaps one of the only films I couldn't stomach solely for the violence. something about its brutality was more upsetting than - as you rightly say - the admittedly more gratuitous and graphic cruelty of modern cinema. the horror genre notwithstanding, even von trier or bizarre russian arthouse films are personally more palatable

I love this movie and this breakdown of the excellent start to the movie makes me want to watch it again.
It also reminds me of my disappointment about the parts where the movie failed. Namely, that Andy's best friend and boyfriend were honestly utterly selfish and whiny. Andy had to make the decision to stand up for herself and not sell herself short for Miranda, however how and what her friends called her out on was out of line and petty and didn't really fit into that.
NIGEL and EMILY were much more important tools for that (seeing how they gave so much to Miranda and she threw them under the bus) but Andy's friends mocked her for dressing for her job and then while their points about Andy giving nearly every waking moment to Miranda was legit, it was often framed in a selfish way (whining about why did she choose a work gala - not just running dry cleaning or something - over going to a 20-something dude's birthday?). It might have been nice if these were also called out by the film (friend's expectations of her to parallel Miranda's expectations, and the need for Andy to choose for herself) rather than being framed as justified. but alas. Oh well. Still a good movie over all.

I depict the cinematography as mirroring his character and actions. The scenes are smooth, efficient and focused, just like John Wick.

Always have this rule with an amateur script: if I'm not hooked within the first 5 pages, I bail.
And if I'm hooked, I continue reading it in 5-page chunks till it gets boring. I read once that Will Smith does that, and I've been doing it ever since.

Its actually reminiscent of a story I heard on a podcast about Michael Bay. He put on one of the best picture nominees from last year at his house to screen for some guests and after 5 minutes it was too boring for him so he turned it off. I guess he expected the 3 Billboards to transform into aliens and try to kill Frances McDormand.
Haha, much as I like 3 Billboards, that's a good Michael Bay story. Was that the only movie he put on?

There is an excitement to starting a career. The Devil Wears Prada captures this excitement. Great film.
I love how you show the text of the screenplay as the movie simultaneously plays above especially when there are slight differences in the dialogue or description (her hair was not actually up in a towel). It shows how even when a writer thinks that a screenplay is finished countless minor changes might be introduced by other writers, editors, the director, and the actors long before an audience ever sees the final product.

in maze runner they refer to the newcomers as greeny, so they are inexperienced/new i think that's what that means
