Hey TFL it’s Justin! I thought meeting Andre on Onion Creek was awesome but seeing that encounter on a TFL video from Moab makes it even sweeter! Everyone at TFL is a class act! Keep up the great work!
12:16 - That was really cool of them. They easily could have just driven by or driven over that gopro, but they didn't. They picked it up, left it running, and returned it without any hesitation once they found someone on the trail who appeared to be using cameras. Those are good people, and deserve a shout-out for their good morals and effort. I also liked that Andrey was recognized on the trail by the sub in the Jeep caravan, and that we got to see him comment on this very video. Both interactions make offroaders in Moab look really good, in my eyes.
We have had our HQ19 for most of a year. We have taken it offroad a bit and was very surprised with how well it survived. We did bottom out and broke our sewage dumping port, but we were able to continue the adventure. We love this trailer for how rugged it is. We pull it with a 2020 Tundra. The trailer is more rugged then our truck. Thanks for doing the video!
It was also interesting to see that the Jeepers were from all different states. They must have coordinated and planned for this trip together. Nice to see.
It's pretty common for most Aussie vans to have independent suspension now days, cruisemaster even offer airbag independent suspension for a softer ride and levelling out the van with upto 10k lbs load ratings
great review, I'm buying a new Tundra this year and plan on pairing with a camper. This camper is nice and from what I have seen the new Tundra's have a lot of tech to help with towing, as do other trucks. I'm getting a Tundra to replace my 20y/o Tundra with almost 300K miles and never any major repairs
Owned this same trailer for 2 years. Pulled it with a 2011 GMC 1500 with 6.2 gasser. Averaged 7-9 mpg depending on terrain. The trailer was definitely pushing the limits of the half ton when fully loaded. I upgraded to a 2018 gmc 2500 duramax.. I would definitely recommend a 3/4 ton. I averaged 11-14 mpg depending on terrain. A gas 3/4 is probably the perfect median. However the exhaust break is always a much appreciated luxury.
I'm looking at a scale model of this black series trailer, designed to be towed by a micro RC offroader of 1/32nd scale. Very rare to see a trailer in the RC hobby. The whole idea is small scale ofroading with a trailer and I love it, cool angle to the hobby.
*Finance Promotions are starting to appear for the new Tundra in some regions!* It's going to be interesting what the next 8 months shows. Many are still waiting for the crash test rating on this version before buying*.
Now that is how you test a vehicle and trailer. Just wish that trailer wasn't so expensive... but I loved the show. Well done. Better than the other channel that tested it... won't mention who it was...
Just for future reference, if you get stuck in that Moab area, you call Rory at TrailMater for rescue. Further south near Hurricane, UT, you call Matt's Off Road Recovery.
Good video. Nice trailer. Great floor plan. The Tundra seemed to handle it fine. Still if I owned that trailer I would probably opt for a 3/4 ton with a good off road package. An f250 with a tremor package would be a good match for that trailer.
For a guy that knows as much about trucks as Andre, anticipating 10mpg while towing up elevation and into a headwind is beyond unrealistic. That 8.6mpg was amazing. In what world would 10mpg be possible with those factors!? Lol
Hmmmmmmm I'm sure they are capable of doing more but I have taken my 27 foot RV trailer through much worse here in Arizona and mine was a fraction of the cost. I have zero damage on mine and have had it since 2015 and I can sleep 8 and have a slideout.
4:28 I hope the truck doesn’t contact its bump stops on highway expansion joints. To me if it’s within spec and driving on typical roadways it shouldn’t be doing that. Maybe the air suspension is the way to go for these.
From personal experience, most truck makers put less than adequate springs in pick up trucks. Inhale a Tacoma and one leaf cracked so I spent a grand and replaced both leaf springs. It was worth the money. The spring shop told me.they see all makes there for this reason. Once I had new springs, the improvement was incredible.
I'm wondering how much weight was in the trailer? Full water tank? Food, dishes, clothing all the stuff you like to have camping. If you were already at max load. Is it capable of towing it really?

Fun video! I would've liked to hear your thoughts on the Tundra's compression braking going down long grades. My F 150 ecoboost with similar engine, 3.5 liter twin turbo, has marginal compression braking with only the V6. "Shoulda bought a V8"!
I think they should have added a Honda generator as part of this review. I also think an off grid camping trip with Andre’s Powerboost F150 would be cool showing reliability of the onboard generator over multiple days of powering this camper. Also, can the F150 generator provide power to the camper while going down the road with the purpose of providing power to the refrigerator?
If you've never tried the roadmaster active suspension, they're cheap and easy to install and work awesomely for reducing sag and sway under load and have little affect on ride when empty. I e had some for 4 years and never had to readjust, I just check from time to time. I was in boulder for the first couple years I had them and went up numerous off.road crawls and had a contractor setup on back that I was often at or near max payload.
I literally put the cart before the horse and now looking for a truck to tow my HQ19. I’m tempted to get a Power Wagon, but not sure that’s the best tow vehicle. Any advice is welcome, but please be respectful as my wife will be looking at the comments.
The big wheels manufacturers put on trucks really look stupid. Trucks should have a maximum of 17’s maybe 18’s. All the trucks with 20’s look so dumb with no side wall. Plus they ride like 💩.
Hope they get it right and work out the bugs so in 2 years I can comfortably get the new Tundra if all goes well. Recently I got a low mileage 2016 DC 5.7V8 to accompany my 2010 4.6 V8 regular cab( i use both for work)..would be cool to add the new one as well in a few years 😁
Might be lucky to get that in 2023....supposed to be released 01/22....04 still not happening. I went ahead and got the 2022 Blueprint SR5 with TRD package
I would like to see a follow up on what you think of the trailer now. I have watched numerous videos from several different users about those trailers and what junk they, specifically the suspension.
You’re probably right. It could’ve been to insinuate what your average consumer would do. That 87 looked to be $6 something a gallon at the first stop😅
Super nice off-road camper! Just would not want to get stuck and need to get pulled out from the front while pulling the the trailer. With no tow hooks on the front what would you attach to? I have been super interested in this truck and was excited about it coming out but I will hang on to my current truck until they re-design and add front tow hooks. Why not go really different from the other manufacturers and add a 2” receiver on the front?
Hey Andre There has been some debate about especially towing heavy if one of these trucks especially being turbocharged would get better fuel mileage running on premium fuel. You guys should do a video and test that theory.
I was at onion creek on 2/20 in my built 2020 Power Wagon. While the terrain is easy it sure is narrow. Did you get to the small single lane bridge rated at 9,000 lbs maximum? I wondered how much it would hold, maybe Andre tested that maximum.

Hey Andre is that a normal seating position, I mean seated that close to the steering wheel, isn’t that too close? Great video, as usual from TFL, keep up great work.
great review. thanks. just subscribed. i am considering a similar setup this year, but after seeing the 8.6 mpg I may have to think long and hard about a diesel instead.

What is significant about the tundra and different from other brands is they offer a lowered version of the truck! I don’t think I have seen a review of it, it gets very little mention. I think it’s called TRD Sport. Most gloss over it as an appearance package BUT if you haul motorcycles and/or trailer motorcycles you will prefer a lowered truck as opposed to a lifted one. I was blown away when I saw one at a dealership, didn’t know it existed.
Thank you Andre for the great reviews on the tundra! I continue to be skeptical about the new gen, for now I’m happy with my 2016 TRD off-road 4x4. I cannot pay that insane $62k for the limited hybrid that I want.
Stop exaggerating, that cheap Chinese trailer is not huge, its only a 19fter and well within the tundras limits, though those trailers are made from heavy, cheap Chinese steel. My Aussie mates advised that black series are made in China and then finished and certified in country of sale. Tow vehicle of choice down under is the landcruiser 200, they are all pissed at Toyota down their for dumping the awesome 4.5 litre twin turbo diesel in the 200 for a pissy 3.3 litre turbo diesel in the 300s. Toyota really stuffed up with the 300s.
I have no idea about anything camping so I have to ask: Is there a way to rent one of those campers? It looks awesome, but I wouldn't buy one for one or two times a year.
It certainly happens to both. It's only a little more concerning in an EV because of charging options and battery capacity. That said, with some of the new battery tech on the horizon and ever increasing charge stations, I suspect range anxiety will become greatly reduced. For now, I'd rather have gas for this kind of trip. I'm sure that will change in the coming years.
Do you think the Tundra can handle/tow a 9800/10,000 lbs total weight boat? Im looking at this truck to tow that weight 2 to 4 times a year max...80 to 110 miles one way.
I like these "travel" videos, but a second person is needed. Whether Andre & Nathan, Roman & Tommy, Tommy & Case (or Alex). There should be a duo dynamic, which would also help getting two perspectives on the trip.
I put 250k miles on my last gen tundra. Towed a tool wagon many thousands of miles. Consistently got 7-9mpg when pulling a 4,000lb enclosed 7x14 trailer. Very surprising to see you got 11. I’m assuming it’s stock and has factory size tires? I had a small 3” lift with 35’s and it barely got 11mpg without a load. With that said, still my favorite truck I’ve ever owned.
Ironic that the Chinese trailer has tow hooks, but the "american" truck doesn't. Oh, a clothes washer in a boondocking trailer, yeah that's going to work out for your water usage. The crap that people buy these days is amazing...

They certainly are with some Australian input to make them look like Australian Off Roaders
I like these "travel" videos, but a second person is needed. Whether Andre & Nathan, Roman & Tommy, Tommy & Case (or Alex). There should be a duo dynamic, which would also help getting two perspectives on the trip.
Great video !!
My 2019 Tundra gets 11mpg towing our Winnebago trailer. It’s just about 6,000 lbs. I’m surprised that the 22 tundra doesn’t get better mpg.
Headwinds will do that to you. Down to 7 one time towing across New Mexico.
Because twin turbo V6’s are a abismal false advertising Joke!
@@roadglide1142 that’s what everyone says until they drive it.
dang thats a sweeeet set up
As long as the sub-soils are stable…you’ll have no problem
When the trailer costs as much as the truck 😂
Did anyone notice after he made it past the last crossing they showed the rear bumper view and the bumper trim was falling off 😂
Ironic that the Chinese trailer has tow hooks, but the "american" truck doesn't.
Oh, a clothes washer in a boondocking trailer, yeah that's going to work out for your water usage. The crap that people buy these days is amazing...
