Great real world review, 2 mates have this bike in manual have to say I'm very impressed by it. Especially at the price makes my 1250 GS ridiculously expensive.
this reminds me of the HONDA CB-750A. It was a great idea, im glad the idea has returned. Manuals are a dangerious method in cities and suburbs. Wonderful off road.
Thanks for the review! Most likely cross-shoped bikes: Suzuki GSX S1000GT, Kawasaki Ninja 1000SX, Moto Guzzi V85 TT, Moto Guzzi V100, Yamaha Tracer 9GT, Triumph Bonneville T120 (with bags and windshield). Some German and Italian bikes are also desirable, but it's hard to get past the overall reliability and running costs. When you want to go for a long ride, you really DON'T want to even think for a moment if you might be near a repair shop - just in case. What I really like about the NT is while it's not the most emotional, it's probably the best long-term companion: smart, comfortable, lively, reliable, really good value. I also like the design: not in your face, but clearly had a lot of time put into it for both function and long-term looks: this will not look old as fast as something like the S1000GT/1000SX/9GT and many of the Italians.
Kawasaki Versys would be a better comparison than the Ninja. The Versys is much more expensive fully kitted out.
They should have given this a shaft. At this price point it could still have made it affordable.
Would be a better option than DCT and fill a much needed hole in the Honda line up. It would also fill the needs of Service Bike users where chain is a liability on bikes doing 3-4K miles per month.
As a new owner of the VFR1200X, I would agree with the shaft issue.

There are lots of buyers looking for them though and people with over weight sports tourers like Pans, FJRs, RTs in the market for new stuff.
It's cool but I wish they revived the ST 1100. There's just something about the looks of a 90s sport tourer.
DCT, with foot shifter, and I hit manual, it works great.

I sold my Africa Twin and ordered this one. The AT is too tall for me, and I don't do any off-road, so this is much more adequate for my utilization. I will miss the electronic suspension, it's a pity that they don't have a better equipped NT version with that and IMU-everything. The lighting was also pretty poor on the AT, but it had cornering lights (again, IMU...) so that helped quite a bit.
I was going to buy a 2017 Africa Twin until I test rode it, I did not like it all. I ended up trading my beloved but well worn 2009 Buell Ulysses for the 2021 HD Pan America. I don't take it off-road but due to surgically fused lower lumbar spine I need somewhat upright ergonomics but would prefer a Sport Tourer to an Adv bike but unfortunately Honda is not bringing the NT1100 to Canada.

Just put a deposit on a DCT today. Delivery in January (in New Zealand). Manuals here now but I want DCT.
Will Honda ever put the ES Showa fork version on this, so that it is electronically tuneable, the suspension?

what is the situation regarding the screen boot time? many African twin owners complain about minutes of screen startup time each time the motorcycle is restarted. and that all settings must be entered again. this is experienced as a recurring annoyance.
I was rather torn between the NT1100 and the GSX-S1000 GT as they came out at roughly the same price. I was leaning towards the NT1100, but then Honda bumped up the price here in Denmark by about 1000£ and they also wanted another £1000 for the panniers (so not standard!). That made it a pretty easy choice to go with the GSX-S1000 GT.

@@joaoroman9583I'm actually looking at selling the Suzuki these days. There's nothing wrong with it per say. As a sports touring bike I can find no faults with it. It's a great machine, but it just feels like a big waste for me. It can go really fast and have buckets of power, but I've realized that having lots of power on tap is not what I'm looking for in a bike especially since I'm not really able to use it without breaking a lot of laws and risk loosing my license or life. Not to mention that it's super expensive to have insurance on.
I've actually found that I wanna go the opposite direction and get myself a small 400cc bike. It's cheaper to buy, maintain and insure. It can still have plenty of pull, but has much less chance of me "driving like a maniac". There's also better chances of me going out for small joy rides.
I'm curious if this bike is the reason that Honda is discontinuing some models of the Goldwing in certain markets. As far as I know, the NT is not available in North America yet.
That was my first thought upon hearing the news. Now if only this NT would come to the US (?)

Does the engine get very hot, Africa is terribly hot, even in winter, how does the NT heat?
For some reason Honda Australia is not including the panniers for the base price. At AU$23,000 OTD for the non DCT it's already overpriced compared to the competition the decision to not include the panniers in that price is baffling.

Wish we had this in the US.... We get screwed with motorcycles simply because here they're considered recreational or "Fun" vehicles not transport.. But with gas now adays. Motorcycles have been a great cheat alternative to hybrids and/or EVs.

The trouble with Africa and Nt is seat. This seats are just hard and not for long distance. They saved costs on most important aspect of comfort.

Not available in the USA so we can only look at videos and hear about how great this bike is.

Good review - this seems like it would be a good daily commuter for the city with DCT and ok to stretch out a weekend road trip. Think I would prefer the 1250 RT. Dave must be lonely in the studio by himself and jealous of Watermelon.
I rode it with the DCT, but would go for a normal gearbox. Can check my video about it.
Rt is not very reliable though

I researched RT too some time ago. But BMW is more expensive on start and next service. RT is more comfortable bike for good quality roads.
I think NT is more universal bike.

I have to disagree the Tracer 9 GT is far better kitted than NT for example the Tracer 9 GT has Semi-Active Suspension, 6 Axis traction control and more all for £12,700 here in UK where as the NT is more £15k here with the tour pack, besides CP3 engine is amazing, great review of the NT1100 glad you enjoyed it
The Honda looks more comfortable and a better touring bike.
The Tracer 9 GT might be better kitted, but here in the US it has a 4000 mile service interval (not valves). No thanks.

@@deanchild9848 I know and that's another part of my problem with this bike. Yamaha did the same thing with the Super Tenere. Why is the US subject to greater maintenance costs and hassles vs the EU and UK? Protecting dealer income streams established during the low service intervals of the past? Whatever the reason it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I wished Honda had used belt drive instead of chains. Not as heavy and as expensive as shaft drive. But I will not have to be concerned as living in the USA the dealers near me say they are not interested in carrying the NT1100. The market here is for the sport bikes that go fast and idiots pull wheelies in traffic. The age group is up 30 and tour type riders are older and purchase the Goldwing type. It is sad they will not import it but Hondas market is primarily is European. I have an AT that I set for adventure riding but have installed tires friendly for the road. My adventure bike now is a CB500X with many add on parts. Purchased a new Crf300l rally and had 1200 miles and at Walmart then POS Harley riders destroyed it just because it was not POS Harley.
It is supposed to replace the ST1300 Pan European. comparing it to the Africa twin therefore is pointless. But don't worry. It does not outperform the Pan European on any aspect.

You and especially Dave are two of my favorite UA-cam vloggers, so I was hoping that you could pump some excitement into this plastic, boring Honda. I'm sorry to say that you failed but look at what you had to work with. You made a darned good effort though. Get something with less plastic and maybe even a clutch next time and I'll be there.

Tracer 9gt is MUCH better "kitted" I think you were thinking of the Tracer 9 (non gt) The 1100 does not even come with a quick shifter (the GT DOES) ...The GT has nearly everything the NT has and more except for carplay if that is important but it has way more sophisticated semi active suspension and of course power wise absolutely kicks butt on the NT at nearly 120hp...I dont see how anyone does not fall in love with Yamaha CP3 engine but hey to each his own....Tracer is only 485pounds wet btw (vs 545llb for your NT! OUCH... Dang! and for a TWIN??).. btw the GT can hold its own with many an I4 vonafide sportbike in the twisties and yet still can do long miles in relative comfort ...was all academic for me anyway as the US does not even get the NT (pretty sure anyway?) But I would not have been tempted especially for the extra piggish (+35 pounds) DCT version which at 545 llbs is SIXTY pounds heavier than the Yamaha GT! Which I am already groaning the fact that IT is like 70 pounds heavier than it's naked version the MT09 which is like 415 (130 pounds lighter than the elephantish NT1100!) Weight matters if you like to play hard

And yes, I know I will et better MPG. But I will miss having complete control over the bike.

4:22 ... What?? .... A 2 cylinder bike can't be classed as sports tourer??? ... I think the KTM Super Duke GT would strongly disagree there ....
I would include the Kawasaki and Suzuki liter class sport tourers which I think both put the NT to shame power wise ,,,,and if you want to moan about the number of cylinders making them real sport tourers and the NT not? Then just include the 1290GT TWIN...There is also a BMW boxer twin or two that also compares closely but ALL of em make more horse power
because of Honda is ahead. This is for riders who had motorbikes with above 150PS or more and they know that it doesn't make sense.

A reasonably well looked after chain drive will result in 5% less power at the rear wheel, a shaft drive 20% to 25% reduction, as well as more weight and more cost. Look after your chain and it will be cheaper than a shaft drive BMW, I speak from experience having owned 2 BMW's

With belt drive, this would be pretty close to perfect as a daily rider.

As byever 1 says needed to be a shaft. There is room at the cheap price point to have added one without overpricing it. Loads of prospective owners are looking for a shaft ST without the BMW RT baggage.

Took one for a test ride. Like many Hondas, competent but bland 😢.
Bland? How about subtle? The value in this approach is the relationship becomes reliable and long term. This is EXACTLY what one should look for when looking for any kind of tourer. Respect, not lust, is lasting.
a real tourer has shaft drive
after decades of high horsepower dual sport- Sport touring.. touring machines, I went back down to smaller displacement machines, I like them better. High horsepower is a little intimidating, it uses more fuel, it cost you more to buy the machine, it cost you more for insurance, and you don’t need… if you’re not using 100% full throttle at least, once a day on your overpowered machine, you don’t need it, you wasted your money, you’re paying more for all of those little things I mentioned, gas, insurance, you paid more for the bike, waste of money..
I had a V Strom, 1000 with color, matched bags and trunk, perfect all around machine, hair trigger. Not even once did I have the throttle pinned. Not even one time in the two years that I owned it. I’ve written friends of mine, V Strom, 650, much better all around machine…
I had a Honda GL 1800 Goldwing. Massively overpowered. 124 hp. 33 miles per gallon. Not even one time that I ever have the throttle pinned wide-open, never not even once. I sold it and eventually went down to a honda NT700v… much more useful machine..
my current sport bike is, a Kawasaki Z 400 .. High 70s, low 80s for gas mileage, that’s USA miles per gallon. I can use all the power every day, Insurance is cheap, tires last longer, it’s more comfortable than most hard edge, sport bikes I owned..
When you have a big horsepower machine capable of very high speeds, just an example besides the insurance and gas usage, tires. You have to use Z or higher speed rated tires.. those machines have to have very high speed rated tires because the Machine is capable of those speeds..
One of my riding buddies that I just put tires on his bike, the tires were shot at 3400 miles... we usually do about 250 to 400 mile days when we go out for a days ride,.. he checked his records, it was only 14 days use. He got out of that set of tires from new, to shot, not only that, the higher, the speed rating, the more the tire costs, and the rush for the ride, because the carcass is stiffer to resist. centrifugal force at the speeds the machine is capable of, even if you never exceed the speed limit. That’s just the way high speed rated tires are. They were expensive, they ride hard, and they don’t last. That’s just part of the cost of doing business with Way over powered machines that you never use even half the power..
not only that. The smaller machines like my Z 400, when I’m on back roads, riding with a group of my friends on sport bikes, I admit, I have an advantage with experience being a 6 Time Rd., racing champion, two time, national champion, but, not even the big Ducati’s stay with me on my little 400 in the tight stuff. I am make a rule for myself, which I never exceed, I will not go over 70 miles an hour, even on the interstate, which I avoid the interstates, of course, it depends on my destinations and time whether or not I use interstates. If I do have to travel far in a short time, I will take the interstate, but I will not ride my 400. I will ride my old Yamaha royal star venture, which gets 48 miles per gallon, remember my Goldwing on the god 33 miles per gallon. And the Venture is not over powered like the Goldwing is.. The Goldwing has just about the right amount of power for a big, heavy, touring bike.. they advertise it has somewhere between the 80s and the 90s for horsepower. It feels more like it has about 70 hp… it’s actually more comfortable and much roomier than my GL 1800 Goldwing was.. and best of all, it is simple to work on, and I can get to the starter, the stator, the slave cylinder, the water pump, and the clutch without removing any plastic on the Venture. I can’t even see those things on a Goldwing…
So over the past decade, I have been deprioritizing horsepower.. It’s just not as important as it was at one time
