Seems like to be good at self-employment, you need to have self-respect and self-worth and it's really evident you have a lot!! Your assertiveness and discipline is actually inspiring!
Awww this is so sweet! You definitely have to back yourself when you’re self employed, otherwise you’ll get walked all over lol
@scrivspo it's hard to be assertive but definitely harder to not be able to pay rent lol. Good on you Harriet!
This comment has inspired me ❤
💜
its impressive how you can edit for other people while still doing your own channel with 43k subs! im IMPRESSED!
Seriously!! 😅
Aw thank you!! I just treat myself like another client lol 😂😂
I love this video! I’m a full time software engineer but am fascinated what other careers look like. Thank you for sharing with others!
❤️❤️❤️
Full time data engineer checking in! Agreed, I’m such a snoop and so intrigued by everyone’s careers!
Thank you Harriet for sharing your life with us!
Not an editor, but I am working toward my dream of writing and publishing a book--I totally get needing to create your own routines & boundaries. Thank you for sharing about your career experience!
Omg I’m so so proud of you for writing a book, I’m trying to do the same in my spare time and it’s so fkn hard hahaha
I'm in my last semester in uni in Nigeria and I am currently on this path! I have been able to secure 2 clients although I'm not paid that well but I'm paid good enough to live on as a student. After uni, I intend to work as a editor full time and this video really helps alot especially with the pricing!
Thank you for this video!!
This is so exciting! Good luck on your journey ❤️❤️
Oh my God, I wish you the best. I’m Nigerian and I don’t know a lot of people embarking on this route. I hope it’s everything you want
Your advice and showing how you work as a freelancer is so interesting and really informative! I really appreciate how your videos are not just entertaining, but also informative and bringing value to us.
aww this is so sweet, i'm so glad you enjoyed!
I think editing is the hardest thing in the world so I respect you for that
Thank you ❤️❤️
It isn't actually that hard if you learn and practice it. Me myself I am starting editor (2 years) and I have learned so much. I have my own UA-cam channel but I like to edit someone's else's videos more nowdays. I actually got a new editing job from someone.
It was so fun to see a day in your life, a bit of your workflow, and listening in on your advice. I've been a UA-cam editor for some time now too and this video makes me feel less alone in our industry!
This makes me so happy!! It can be pretty lonely sometimes hey!
my job is far away from yours. i know nothing about editing. but harriet has a new video - i click.
Same!
what would i do without you guys!?!
I appreciate how you engage with your viewers in the comment section. It shows that you value their thoughts and opinions.
Always!! ❤️❤️
Second this ❤
SUCH a great video. 1000% agree with how making content for yourself is a good place to start -- my UA-cam channel led to nearly all of my freelance work and landed me a great full-time gig producing content for a popular brand. A powerful portfolio is EVERYTHING.
Couldn’t agree more!! So happy you enjoyed!
This is such a cool video Harriet! I'm not planning on being a freelancer in the near future, but its soooooo inspiring and interesting to hear a BUSINESS WOMAN explain how she does it
and also........man I wish the US had universal healthcare lol
Omg I wish the US had universal healthcare too 😭😭😭 I feel so bad for you guys
this is a great video and thank you so much for being honest about how it took 2 years to find that first job
Of course ❤️❤️❤️
This seems like a good set up to have from your process of editing and doing check ins to the boundaries you’ve got so you still get paid but you also don’t have to yell at anyone and having contracts so everyone knows what’s happening. I would try the job out myself but I don’t think I’d be cut out for it haha.
It’s definitely not for everyone!! ❤️❤️
Love the story! I've been editing with Content creators over the past 5 years and your workflow is amazing!
Aw yay!!
This was so helpful! Your editing timeline is goals 😭 My process is ao opposite and honestly probably why it takes me so long. I love that you've found a way to make it so quick!
i'm curious about your process!!!!
This was just what I needed to hear at this moment. Thank you for sharing so freely, with transparency and calm vibes.
So happy you enjoyed!
I appreciate how you go in details with small details not assuming everyone knows. This is so helpfull as an editor
So happy you found it helpful!!
Thanks for the realism and honesty. Really helpful video, especially for new youtubers
So so happy you found it helpful!!
wow this video was so informative and really opened up my mind to what my life could potentially look like in the future! thanks harriet ♥️
Yayyyy I’m so glad you enjoyed ❤️❤️❤️
I loved learning a little about your processes as a freelance editor. 🥰
I've also been an editor for 6 years, but it's still very difficult for me to set these working hours, but I'm trying to improve 🙏
It’s sooo hard hahaha I can totally relate
This was so informative and interesting! Thank you for sharing this lil glimpse into your job
Yayy so happy you enjoyed!! ❤️❤️❤️
Great video! I always love learning more about what a career in content creation looks like for different people and just learning about others’ creative jobs and processes. Thanks for sharing, I’m studying graphic and I think there are definitely some things I can apply from this! Hope this video finds more creatives 😊
Aw yay so happy you liked it ❤️❤️❤️
This was so helpful for me! I love the video editing aspect of UA-cam so much! When I first tried working with people, my first few clients pretty much everything for practically no money. It was very frustrating. I've also had trouble pricing myself in the past. After watching this, I'm tempted to try again :)
Yesss you should! People will always try to take advantage unless you advocate for yourself. You got this!!
Thanks! The detail in this was so great! I definitely want to do exactly what you are doing in a few years. I love editing but don't love filming myself as much anymore, so I'm hoping to make the switch at some point 😊
You have got this!!!
This was such an interesting video!! I really enjoy the types of videos you make
yayy this makes me so happy!
Thank you for this video! I’ve been thinking about freelancing recently and it’s nice to have this info :)
you should definitely give it a go!
wow!! this is an amazing video Harriet! I’m a freelancer too, I do social media for small businesses and I really want to get into freelance editing as well. This video helped me a lot, you are extremely disciplined- which I really need to focus on being too🥺 thank youu for this video🧡
i promise you despite how it may look, i am not very disciplined hahaha. i try my best but just know if you're procrastinating etc you are definitely not alone
Absolutely loved learning more about this part of your life! Definitely inspired me to get back to editing again, I used to love it! x
Yayyyy you should!!!
This was so inspiring! I've thought about having a career in editing but have felt overwhelmed by it all and always figured I'd need a degree to even get any credible work. Thanks for helping to shift my mindset :)
You have got this!!! ❤️
hey girl! i've been an editor for a few creators for 3 years now but this video was still sooo helpful! thank you for the wonderful tips :)
Aw yay I’m so happy you found it helpful!!!
It's not really boundaries, it's a subscription for editing. It makes total sense.
Love this!!!
Respect. I’m currently working with 2 - 1M+ channels and it’s been a pleasure. Keep up the good work
Love it!
Resigned from my full time job as a video editor and motion designer, and started to edit for youtubers since August 2023, it's way better than the full time jobs I love it
Couldn’t agree more!!
Such an inspiring video! Super interesting too see your progress! You explained it wonderfully beautiful and calming video! Love this
❤️❤️❤️❤️
This video is so good!!! Thank you for sharing
So happy you enjoyed!!!

loved watching this thank you for sharing more!! I'm in a post production (editing) program for film and tv and I've always thought about doing freelance UA-cam editing when I'm done! :)
You absolutely should!!
This is immensely helpful information. Thank you.
So happy you enjoyed!!
Thank you for such an informative video

Good morning Harriet happy Tuesday morning and I loved your vlogs and you are amazing Supporter and I'm proud of you
Thanks Edward!!!
Great video ! Love it! Seems like your very professional 🙏
Aw thank you!!
Thank you for this video. I have my own small channel & I always learn something new from your videos. Super appreciate the transparency and realness. 🩷
Awww yay I’m so happy this was helpful!!!
as an editor myself I can't ever find any UA-camr with a similar job to mine, so happy to have come across this video and would love for you to make more content involving your work
Yaaayyy ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for the detailed info on what you do! One day I might need some help! 😁
So happy you liked it!
Great info! I am looking into getting an editor soon, I know it would be so helpful and save me so much time. 🙌🏻
It really does!! And it helps you make more money in the long run as you can focus on creating more content. It’s the best investment ever!!
super helpful advices ❤
Happy it helped!
I started editing about 1.5 years ago, and now I help with editing for my boyfriend as a shadow worker, which I don't mind because I don't have to deal with clients, haha. But I'm just about to step up and start looking for my own clients. Your video is such an inspiration and so valuable! Thank you! 🥰
Love this! Good luck with your own clients 👏🏼
Appreciate this video, i agree with you talked about having doing this myself. Just looking for my next client.
Good luck on your search!!
The value in this video is insane!!! You are incredible! I am so multi passionate so I’m getting into freelancing and this was super informative. Would love to start pitching and get one retainer client!! Will be back for more🕺🏽
Awww yay! I’m so happy you liked it. GOOD LUCK lmk how you go!!!
Thanks so much for this video!!
You’re welcome!! Thanks for watching

Very interessting and helpful! Thank you 😊
You’re welcome!!
Great advice - thank you!
You’re welcome!!
I edited my video pending from last 5 days by watching your video! Thank you for the motivation 😃
Yay ❤️❤️
love this. so inspiring ❤. i’m def interested in upskilling and improving my edits. do you have recommendations on using music? still navigating the copyright/license landscape
so happy you enjoyed! i use epidemic sound (my client has a subscription as well to avoid copyright issues) but youtube has a great free audio library!
@@scrivspo awesome, thanks!
Love this video
Yay
This is all very good information. Very well put together. Thank you! Would you mind sharing a template to your contract to see all the requiements and how you implemented the month to month retainer? I love this idea.
I just downloaded a template from Google and then added in my monthly retainer stipulation using Chat GPT! It’s super easy to do 🥰🥰
Nice vlog so far❤
Happy you enjoyed!!
love your channel.
Yay thank you!!
Thanks for posting this! We are considering the idea of hiring a video editor in the future and it was super informative to see how it all works on the editors end!! :D
So happy you enjoyed!!
Hi Chloe
If you ever do decide to hire I would be super interested to pitch for the job
It's great to see insights into the structured workflow of a freelance video editor! 💼 Setting schedules and organizing processes are key to success when working independently in creative fields like video editing.
Absolutely 👏🏼👏🏼
This video was great. I'm looking to leave my job & go into fulltime freelance video editing. I get major imposter syndrome, but this video has great tips to help with a lot of stuff. Gained a new sub :)
You’ve got this 👏🏼👏🏼
Nice vlog!!!
Thanks!!
Amazing project, and it’s very interesting
Glad you enjoyed!!
Such a great video, tfs 😊
So happy you enjoyed them!!
Hi thank you for this vlog, learnt a lot.
please do you mind talking more about the retainer or a template on the contract.
There’s not much more to say in terms of the retainer, if you have any questions feel free to ask but I explained it in this vid! In terms of the contract, I used a template I found on google and edited it to match my needs :)
I love this video so much, I learned a lot thank you :) I am a fellow editor myself, but I do editing retainers for Instagram Reels mainly, and I find a lot of clients will have videos go into the next month because they didn't get to it etc and I find it really difficult honestly to keep up with. This inspired me to maybe just have a structure that if i don't get assets, the videos don't roll over to the next month. Hmm..
Yep!! Get them on a retainer 👏🏼 it’s not your fault if they’re falling behind!
You have motivated me so much. I want to be a freelance graphic designer youtuber
Yayy you’ve got this!!
loved finding out more about this !! i would love to be a freelancer but not in video editing,, idk where to start
What do you wanna freelance in? Start practicing and building up a portfolio!! Xx
@@scrivspo sewing,, making custom clothes or helping people with sewing something like that !! i am definitely practicing the most i can and ive made an insta account as a portfolio but its harder to grow insta accounts w the constantly changing algorithm
building structure is so important! I tried and failed to do that for years.
It’s sooo hard 😭😭
Thank you so much for this video. Soooo many gems!! Do you by chance do coaching/mentoring? Not for learning how to edit, but getting the business operations in order. I just want to make sure that I'm setting myself up for success from the beginning...as much as possible because I know I won't have everything perfect.
I don’t currently offer coaching!! If I ever do I’ll let you know xx
@@scrivspo Understood, thank you!
OMG it takes me DAYS to edit a whole video. Mad skills to get it all done in a few hours 🥲🥲
Aw definitely don’t compare yourself, it depends on the video & I’ve also done this for years so I’ve developed shortcuts!!
very helpful thank you
You’re welcome!!
Thank you for sharing. New subbie here 🙋🏼♀️
❤️❤️
I just randomly landed on this video and I really enjoy your break down and how you express yourself. Thanks for putting out content 🔥 🫒
yayyy so happy you liked it!
Love this I love editing I’m a creator and have done social media management creating content and editing❤
amazing!! so happy you liked it!
I am so curious , how are you able to create such engaging content , be consistent on your own socials and be able to grow as a freelance editor ? Honestly this was a big motivator ❤
Stop this is so lovely 😭 balance is hard and I’m definitely still working on it!!!
Today i went for the first time on your channel. New subcribe from me! And just a question. Do you use glasses with protection for the screen?
Yep they’re blue light reading glasses!
I see you reading Red Rising!!! great book highly rec!!!
i've finished it and LOVED IT!!!
I have always wondered how youtubers have editors because I always think how does the editor know exactly what the youtuber would want to keep in the video, so this video was really interesting!
So glad you enjoyed!!!
Nice video, crazy how fast you do the roughs, although I guess it depends on length and amount of footage etc… The second stage I’ve usually always called fines (I guess you could have a story cut in between roughs and fines).
Love fines! I’ll be stealing that hahaha
Thanks for this video! I'm looking to hire someone soon to help out with this part of my work and it was great to see this side of things. One question - if a client sends you multiple talking-head takes, do you pick the best? Or do you want them to only send you the best take of all of those? Thanks!
I choose the takes 🥰 if they don’t like the take I chose I can just include their preference. A lot of the time they’ll communicate with me in the raw footage which take they liked best too!!
@@scrivspo Great! Thanks for sharing that. Because when we are filming we are too close to it to decide sometimes :)
Make more videos like these please. Very helpful.
what else would you want to see?
Great video and absolutely to the point.
Being a UA-camr and doing paid event filming and editing, I really appreciate the challenge of film editing.
One small thing that challenges me is that my clients are very slow to return their feedback. By the time they do, I've already finished many more projects, and I really have trouble remembering the project that I have to revise. Since I only get paid when the project is finished, I have to wait for weeks before I get the feedback, can revise the project, and send the invoice.
I wonder if you could start charging a 50% deposit, so that you can receive some money up front and the rest when the project is delivered
Such an inspiring video
Thank you!!
As soon as Affiliate marketing started I clicked out
Sponsorships help me create content like this (which you get to watch for free!)
@@scrivspo I know but the problem is that the video loses its credibility/value and its main goal becomes => Views => Clicks => Conversions ... anyway that's just my opinion, wish you all the best
Awesome video. Love your energy. Will follow you...for sure.
Thanks so much!!
Love you❤❤❤
Love YOU
I watch a lot of reaction videos (for TV shows and movies) and what I do is download their full, non-edited reaction (I get permission, but it isn't required from my experience), record or download the footage that they watch, and edit their reaction myself. I time myself and then compare my finished video to how their reaction video on their channel was edited. Usually, it is around the same, but what I find I need to work better at is cutting more often. I don't want to mess with the flow of the video, but cutting more can actually positively influence the flow; I need to re-develop my editing mindset. If that makes sense. To practice editing is great, but this version of practicing is even better because I can directly compare it to already finished content.
Totally agree, I’m pretty brutal these days with what I cut! It’s a real skill to figure out what parts slow down the video!
your payment plan is very intelligent, nice thanks for the tip!
So happy you enjoyed!!
@@scrivspo really hypes me to do that too (I’m in a phase where I’m figuring out if I make a company / business or more on the freelancer work side of things). Did I miss the amount you charge per video? Or don’t you say that? 🙃
@@Jona I don’t say my price! Everybody’s going to price differently depending on location and experience so there’s no point!
@@scrivspo yeah true ^^
Oh I’m tuned innn! I’m my own editor & can barley make ittt 😭
You’ve got this!!
So good right!!
