Can You Use A Generator to Charge Your TESLA??

- Are you considering using a portable generator to charge your electric vehicle? Today we will take a look at the pros and cons of generator charging, as well as what you need to do to keep your EV ready to go.
What about neutral bonding plug ?
I see people use these for level one charging on gas generators do you need something similar on 240?
Can you explain in some depth the use of a neutral bonding plug, thank you .
Need the bigger amps to make the charging go faster.
How can I find the 50amp adapter from the tesla charger to the generator?
@@Backoutsideco Do a google search they come up pretty readily or Tesla site.
@@generatormart4631 thanks!!!!
Does the generator need to be an inverter? Floating neutral? Bonded neutral? Asking for 240V Type 2 charging.
a inverter style generator is best by far. Or just use a standard with some distance from the EV. A generator with a floating neutral will not charge an EV. Bonded Neutral is best for operation-- you can add a plug to make it work in floater.
It's actually very simple if you have F-150 truck, it has 240v 30A outlets.
Yep, it will slow charge at 30A as we found that 40A seems to be the "cutoff" if you will for higher charging speed.
@@generatormart4631 there is nothing slow abut 30A, it's just 33% difference. In fact, if you are using Ford mobile charger, it's rated @30A.
Thanks. How is the noise in the 240V generator?
@@lg8264 they are usually a little louder in the 65-70 DBs range. Average conversation is 60 DBs.
Is the power supply out of a generator clean and constant enough to not do any damage to the tesla
You just need an adapter according to Tesla and it should be fine.
does this mean putting a generator in a trunk will not theoretically ever be able to provide enough range to sustain a drive
Only if it’s a larger unit with 220 vs 110. 110 will get you a few miles over hours while the larger amps would get you maybe 25 miles after an hour or two. More about emergency situations.
could it be 240v 30amp ? or would that not work ??
In all of our research, the 40 AMP level seems to be the threshold for faster charging. 30 AMP would fall in the slow charging category.
You just multiple the voltage and the amperage. So 240*30= 7200 W or 7.2kW. Yeah that’s good, not the fastest but obviously faster than 1.5kW from a wall outlet
Did you actually try to charge the Tesla? Is a neutral and ground bonding needed?
Adapter was required.
What adapter? I need the adapter I believe since my generac wired into a main panel with a ground and neutral into nema 14-50. The Tesla would say charging but go between 0 and 1 amp back to 0
Does it have to be an inverter generator or will a conventional one work? Any idea how much THD an EV can deal with?
No sure on the THD abilities with an EV but most larger home standbys are less than 6…. And connect to the home via transfer switch. As for a larger portable that can charge faster, just put a little distance between the unit and EV and it should be fine.
Is one charger enough ? Or is every car charger different ?
Most are similar but adapters are key.
@@generatormart4631 woah I didn’t know there where adapters whattt !!!
Or buy a second car that can be charged with gasoline.
The cheaper and smarter solution right?
Can we charge the powers directly into battery while we are driving?
Depends on the vehicle-- Teslas state that systems that can operate while charging include the infotainment operation, automatic climate control, and a few others. As a safety measure, though, the drivetrain is disabled when your EV is plugged in to prevent damage to the vehicle, charger, and so on.
No i dont think any electric car allows that when you're driving.
There's a guy who modified a model s with a diesel powered generator that sits in the trunk and feeds power while driving. Not very efficient, but he got it to work.
Can 120/240v with 30A plug charge an EV car?
In all of our research, the 40 AMP level seems to be the threshold for faster charging.
Won't a regular generator damage a Tesla compared to an Inverter generator?
In our experiment all worked as long as you had the right adapter. Small electronics like laptops do have trouble operating near non inverters. Harmonic distortion is the problem. Teslas must have protection built in. Distance from unit would be a factor but with our tests generators were about 10 yards away.
What adapter would be needed for this generator to charge level 2 on a Tesla thanks in advance
The generator that had the 1450 didn’t look like inverter type. Will it still charge a Tesla.
Also, to the comment above, electric cars are more reliable and more ways to get miles and at a fraction of the price of gas.
Every generator in this video could charge an EV, but it would really only make sense in an emergency situation because it takes so much time to do it. Even the little Honda could do it but might take 4 hours to get 10 miles etc.
😂😂😂😂😂
Of course you can!!!! It's not against the laws of physics!!!! But it takes either GASOLINE or DIESEL FUEL to RUN the generator, depending on what sort of generator you are using!!!! Can you dig that!!!!!!?????
does it have to be an Invertor type Generator?
Those supercharger are killing the battery pack you can not a lithium battery that fast without shortening its life
just buy a gas car using gas generator to charge a EV is insane 🤣
Agreed, this is really for an emergency when power is out for days and you have to drive somewhere.
Insane ? You burn gasoline everyday, and an EV burns once a year for an emergency power outage ..it depends what angle you look at it from
@@cohenkevinloriqueen818does it though? How much fuel was used to build it? How about to mine the lithium? Or let’s see where the power at your house you charge with, comes from.
@@cohenkevinloriqueen818you really think electricity from a wall charger is clean? Where does that power come from? Not trying to be confrontational, but you can’t be serious? 264kw in 24 hours! How much power is that and where does it come from? Not from unicorn milk buddy!
Isn't using a battery to start a gas car insane?
