CSX Yard Job Switches Rare and Almost Abandoned Industry!

  • If it were not for the two paper service boxcars awaiting a pickup from CSX train Y223, you would think the lead to Pan American Paper is unused and abandoned. The yard job negotiates very tight territory to retrieve the two spotted cars, and puts on a show as it crosses NW 37th Avenue in Miami, FL.

    Part 1: It may not seem like much, but this relatively small business probably worked it’s ass off to fill two boxcars.
    Gotta love it, but also gotta love the railroad business mindset involved. Some business did their homework on the cost of moving their product out. A local railroad hustled and made the economic case, then closed the deal. The result: a bit of railway business in action.

    Part 2: I personally would *love* to see an interview with both sides here: Paper Company and a Rep from the small local railroad that did this pickup. How it works out as good business, the economics of it, etc. It’s not “locomotives and tracks” - but it’s an essential part of the true story of American Railroading, and it deserves to be told!

    I've lived in the same city my whole life (34 years) and there's an old spur line that I cross every day on my way to and from work, and that I crossed every day on my way to and from school before that. Plus several times a week when running random errands. I've never once seen a train there my entire life. I naturally assumed it was abandoned. About a week ago though, on my way to work a switcher from the nearby yard was pushing a flatcar through the crossing with some kind of equipment loaded on it (it was covered with a tarp so I couldn't see exactly what it was). Then on my way home, the same switcher was pulling the same now empty flatcar back toward the yard.

      I had a similar experience and thought a branch was abandoned. Especially when it was, over 30 miles from the closest active line. But one night I saw the crossing active and was surprised to see 2 boxcars and a strange engine moving them around town at 4am

      Yup. Near where I used to live, there is a terminal transfer. The last time I saw a train go through one particular crossing on those tracks was when I was probably 5 or 6? Now I'm in my early 30s. Last year I saw a train go through that same terminal transfer albeit on a different track

      It is probably a reasonable theory that what is being shipped does not qualify for a container (hazardous, too heavy, too big) - this is exact where railroads would never build a siding now. It might also be the customer has specialized equipment that can not be replaced without a major renovation of the building, so presumably they pay more for this service

    That bicyclist did a bad thing. He went around the downed gates. You never know if a train might come from the other direction, lol.

    I'm surprised that they would even have any crossing gates, or lights just for that.

    Nice video. I have an Athearn model gp40-2 CSX road# 4402 in the same paint scheme.

    Neat video. I think a lot is over stated though. The crossing signals work fine indicating they are maintained and they didn't switch out any cars, just coupled up and left. I dont see why thats in any way such a big deal.

    You don't see much of this kind of action anymore in the Hampton Roads area of VA.

    Great catch, always nice to see a rare working on a disused siding, are the crossing barriers and lights operated manually?

      @TolgaEastCoast  6 років тому +1

      Automatically, CSX doesn't have any manual triggers in these parts.
