- A brief history of a classic pipe tobacco blend, Half & Half.
PLEASE NOTE: I made a mistake in this video. It does not include Maize, it includes the spice "Mace". Also, I simply forgot to mention it also has an anise or anisette topping.

No problem my friend you're doing great on your videos 👍🏻😃
@@Pipelounge1776 thanks bro
Not a smoker, don't know how the algorithm found me out, but Half and Half was my dad's pipe, pretty much sunup to sundown if he could. Thanks for the nostalgia blast. Also the preference of the 1970's most notable pipe smoker, Jerry Ford.
@@MostlyHarmlessNebr-gb6di That's great! Glad to hear it was nostalgic for you. That's what originally got me into pipe smoking, the nostalgic aroma of the old blends. Very interesting about Ford, I was not aware of that. Thanks for watching and your comment.
My Dad as well ... I can still remember my Dad opening his can of Half & Half and restocking his tobacco pouch with it. I just recently took up pipe smoking and will have to try some Half & Half myself.
I started smoking pipe recently in my late 40's. Half & half was all I could find near me here in Finland. Not many pipe smokers anymore. I really like it. Even now, when I have some more expensive, more complex blends. Half & half is very pleasant and light smoke in any pipe.
@@tuukka8592 same here! My local shop mostly has cigars, only a few pipe blends. I'm curious to compare the US version with the European because many of those old american blends like this are different. Thanks for your comment!
Good Morning 😊 Thanks For Sharing 👏🏼 Intresting👌🏽 Have a Great Sunday and Greetings From South Africa 🇿🇦
Thanks for watching Yusuf! Hope you have a great Sunday as well!
Well done! Love pipe and tobacco nostalgia.
Thank you, hope you have a great weekend!
A great job sharing history. Love it.
@@Ragamuffinpiper Glad to hear it Randy, thanks.
Your videos are fantastic!!! This can’t be your first UA-cam channel!! It’s 1:00am and I’m binge watching all of your videos. I do most of my pipe-smoking while watching the old Sherlock Holmes movies with basil, Rathbone and Nigel, Bruce. I also love to watch the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes series. My wife was laughing and said she would not be surprised if she came out and I was sitting here with a deer stalker hat on while I was watching it and smoking my pipe.
@@JohnsPipeJourney wow I appreciate that John! Yes this is my first channel, I've only been at it for about 3 weeks or so. Those old sherlock holmes from the 40s are great and the series from the 80s. Not a fan of the new stuff, they turned it into action movies.
This was great! Learned several things watching it. Keep’m coming!
👍👍
@@WillBill1966 Glad to hear it. Thanks for watching!

Amazing video!!
Appreciate that Kevin! I've made a few similar videos about other blends and will be making more. 👍
Awesome video, very interesting!!
Appreciate it!😊👍💨💨
@@jespiping I appreciate YOU. Thanks man!
Excellent video !! You are one of the most original presenters on here. Keep up the great work 👍
Thanks man! But I'm not original at all 😅
@@MillennialCodger but I love history though
Very cool
Video.
@@PonderosaPiper Thanks for watching man! Hope the rest of the weekend treats you well
@@MillennialCodger I love all these nostalgic videos.
Nostalgia bits are always fun…thanks!
@@ParsimoniousPiper glad you enjoyed it, Ethan. Plenty more to come.
Great presentation! I've been curious about it for some time, but of course you won't find it here in Europe. Sadly, most reviewers say it's "not what it used to be".
@@johnwayne8114 I appreciate that! Yes, it's now owned by the Scandinavian Tobbaco Group, so its probably slightly different. Most tobaccos that have been around for so long, even ones that haven't changed ownership, change at least a little bit over time. I still enjoy the current version of it quite a bit. It's not my favorite, but it's a pleasant smoke.
@@MillennialCodger Finding nostalgia for things i've never experienced in the first place. What can you do, everything's changing :)). But what really frustrates me is how STG's offer is so lackluster in their own european home market. You guys have it so good tobacco-wise over there. Anyway, keep it up, love the old-timey montages and subtle humour
@@johnwayne8114 Yeah it is unfortunate. We can't get a lot of stuff that you guys have over there too. I'd offer to trade you but I'm pretty sure it's illegal.
Great nostalgia! Love me some Half and Half.
Man I thought you were gonna say (at the end) youre experiencing a cargo of contentment in the bowl of your pipe! THIS WAS GREAT! WHERE DID YOU FIND THE AD!??? I have looked EVERYWHERE for one!
@@PaladinPiper The commercial at the beginning? I think I found it in a compilation of old ads. I'll email you the clip if you want.
Blake was here.
Thanks for stopping by Blake!
Is this the artful codgers artful cousin???? 😊
@@mushroomleg I really liked his style of videos. I enjoy watching the vlog stuff from other people but it's not for me. I also love Velvet too 😋
I wonder how a cigarette from back then compares to one from today.
@@MonstersFlyinginTheSky From what I hear, much better!
look at Stevie1989MRE reviews there is a playlist with all the cigarette episodes if you search for it, he occasionally finds old preserves ciggies from army rations
I used to smoke cigarettes all through the late '60's into the early '90's.
I must have tried a hundred different brands from America and western Europe, having lived on both continents.
I can say that until roughly 20 to 25 years ago a cigarette smoker had many brands to chose from. Today, from what I can see, that is no longer the case.
Most -not all but most - unfiltered brands are extinct. Of all the different cigarettes I ever smoked, the one that stood out for me were Philip Morris Commanders. As cigarettes go the smoke was delicious. They disappeared in the 90's I believe.
English smokes were great. Brands like 555 State Express, Players (non filtered), Rothman's, Craven A, and many I forget. English tobacco blends had a distinctly different flavor than US smokes.
I must say the health nannies in the west have done an outstanding job of killing off the culture of smoking, at least tobacco that is.
Smokers have to hide now and look around constantly for Karens to run up on them and give hysterical lectures about murdering countless innocent bystanders with 2nd hand smoke. A perfect lie.
Otherwise they have taxed cigarettes into near heroin prices. Sixty years ago a pack of Luckies or Tareytons cost thirty cents. In the south, even less. Now a single pack goes for 10 to 14 bucks depending where you are. That's fifty to seventy cents a cigarette...what a deal.
All this rant to say that the golden years of smoking, especially cigs, is over in the west and will never come back.
BTW, I tried Half & Half and never did like the taste. I switched brands back in the day but never H&H.
@@ericmowrey6872 smoke a pipe instead 😎
@@ericmowrey6872 a yeah I only smoke unfiltered cigarettes and for the most part they all taste the same. Think the way to go nowadays if you really want an enjoyable smoke either go with hand rolled cigarettes cause the tobacco is completely different from pre rolled cigarettes, or just go with a pipe and smoke pipe tobacco.
I love the current rendition of Half and Half personally. Not everyone’s cup of tea but I prefer mine with coffee anyways.
Nice! It's not my favorite codger blend, but it's up towards the top. I prefer Velvet a bit more. Thanks for watching!
@@MillennialCodger that’s one I haven’t tried yet. I think my current favorite codger blend is sir Walter regular
