The trail around Monarch Lake near Granby Colorado has an abandoned steam donkey next to the lake. Quite the thing to find in a wilderness area. Evokes ingenuity, determination, and hard work.
When men were men and women were double breasted ha just an old saying I used to hear when I was a kid in the camps.the first job my dad got in the bush was splitting wood for a steam donkey.that was somewhere around 1939 at Cowichan lake camp 5.he stayed with it till he was called to war in 1942 .when the war ended he went right back at it and in time was the high rigger hook tender highest paid guy on the claim .there was time when just about every one I knew worked the forest industries.my dad and his brother my grand dad helped build Fraser mills and worked there for over 40 years. My moms 4 brothers all worked the bush as train engineers and donkey punchers. My mom and a couple aunts worked a plywood plant in Westminster BC.All that is gone now.A whole way of life is missing in our culture.
