Catfish Yep, but they mark the specific trees that will be cut. I believe now they cut some of the younger ones, (about the size of an oak (I think) but the large really old ones are legally not allowed to be cut.
The only reason things last one generation is because younger generations throw it away for shiny new plastic crap. So it's kind of your own fault. Wooden stuff can last well beyond a single lifetime if you take care of it.
You clearly don't do woodworking or know anybody good at it still alive. I've got a wooden bowl that doesn't have a crack in it yet four generations deep. It wasn't uncommon in the old days for even a poor family to have properly made, sturdy wooden furniture that outlives the family name. Today it's unfortunately mostly wealthy customers who can commission good work, but anyone can learn the species of trees, how to fell them, how to dry them and how to carve them with modern tools or how to split and carve them. What you're describing is shit from modern stores.

I've been cutting trees since 1987. I couldn't even imagine how hard this work was!!
Just think of the first guy that cut, fell, and split a red wood for firewood heating just to find out it didn't burn worth a crap Lol
Lester Claypool 😂😂😂😂😂😂
You'd need a really hot fire before you put redwood on, but it is amazing for heating. It's burns very hot for very long. It's dense and stores alot of energy, wouldn't be a good choice for kindling, but split and seasoned it would burn just fine.

And does like nothing else... Great to toss in the stove before bed.

Some of these trees dated back to Jesus Christ.
