    Since we were at a school, we did get the police to deal with the situation and he ended up moving. It’s unfortunate what happened but in order to get out of the vehicle, we had to ask him to move. We hope that he realizes his mistake and never does it again.

    Here is my tip that I have learned. if someone is in a handicapped spot when they are not, take down their license plate and take a picture of them in the spot. You can report it by calling the police. Anytime I have confronted someone they get defensive and say "I was only hear for a second." Unfortunately it's rare to see someone apologize.

      As someone with a hidden disability, I honestly prefer this approach, because then I have the chance of maintaining some dignity in the situation.
      I once parked in a disabled spot at work, on my way to my committee on accessibility meeting, and when I got out of my truck, an employee was waiting there and asked me if I was disabled. Apparently he either didn't see my hangtag, or didn't believe it was for my use.
      I was so humiliated. I am the assistant director for EHS at my University. I took that job after my disability had caused so much damage that I could no longer physically do the job that I loved. And sitting in my back seat, where he couldn't see them, were my knee and ankle braces, hot hands because I have raynaud's syndrome, and a pair of forearm crutches. In my previous job I personally designed every ADA workspace for a 60K square foot building, and worked with our student accessibility services each and every time we had a student in my building with a physical challenge.
      After telling him that yes, I was disabled and listening to him awkwardly backpedal, I walked away, into a bathroom, and cried my eyes out.

      @@bethg7026 I’m so sorry that happened to you and made you feel so awful. My disability is hidden but not physical; in my efforts to be an ally to friends and colleagues with physical disabilities, I’d like to know the best thing to do in this situation. To avoid putting someone through what you experienced, would them taking down your license plate # and taking a photo been better? I’m just trying to understand better. I should probably ask the other person who commented above, but would calling the cops, be reporting it? Or will it require them to send a squad car? I am opposed to calling police on people since they have have a tendency to use excessive force for minor offenses against members of my community, so I wouldn’t take that approach. What another option?

    • @bethg7026
      @bethg7026 4 роки тому +5

      @@Nrbrown I do understand the fear that many BIPOC and individuals with mental health disorders have about police encounters. I think this is a situation that should be left to the police, both for the witness and the accused.
      Look at what Cole and Charisma faced when they, who obviously need those spots to be left available, faced. Look at what is happening around the country, with people assaulting and killing others over wearing a mask. You never know if the person you are confronting is going to snap and turn this into a violent situation.
      If someone is parking illegally in a disabled spot, that person is violating the law. That person should have the police called, so that the police can issue them a ticket, and if need be, tow their car away.
      And then there is my perspective. I frankly would much rather have a police officer come and see that I'm legally allowed to park there, than to have to justify my right to park in that spot to a stranger who knows nothing about me, and can't understand that some people may look "fine", but we also have situations where we desperately need that spot.

    • @Nrbrown
      @Nrbrown 4 роки тому +1

      @@bethg7026 Thanks for breaking it down to me Beth. I see, so having the officer come to check is better than an individual asking. Especially when considering that it is violating the law and would be an instance where they should get a ticket from that officer. That makes sense that it would be appropriate to call 911 and let them deal with the situation. Okay, I have a better understanding, thank you for replying back :)

      Yes you never KNOW what type of people or person you are up against. They could appear normal in appearance and then this little altercation with you is the last thing to send them over the phone edge. In the city I live in,which was never known for gun violence is now happening way too much. A lady was leaving THE MALL in a nice part of town and at the light waiting for the light to turn green and someone pulled back into the parking lot back to the lane next to hers and shot n killed her. I didn't follow up but they were sure the lady didn't know who the shooter was. She didn't end up surviving.
      I saw on Crime Watch a man got mad at the car behind them and stopped his car demanded the people get out n tried to attach them with a knife. He got the woman,she survived. After it was done and the police searched his vehicle they found several weapons with artillery and figures he was actually about to seek out random people to kill and hurt. Granted the female he attacked before her man grabbed his attention got hurt but it stopped a ton more people from getting hurt.
      My point is you NEVER KNOW WHO you are coming up against no matter if you are in an area you are familiar with a d feel safe at...it's NOT worth it to risk it
      Yes people need to be educated but that saying you can't lead a horse to water, you can't force someone to be educated especially if they jump from calm to angry that quickly. It's apparent something was going on with their day or life and they chose to take it out on you two
      Sadly, they probably didn't view you two as a threat so felt comfortable going off but had there been someone they felt like would no no match they probably would have been nicer
      I find it when I'm with my husband people are nicer than if I'm alone like male wise.
      Stay safe and God Bless 👍💗💗💗🐢🐢🐢cara

You never know how someone is going to respond and if you're in a vulnerable position and can't protect yourself it makes it that much worse. In tense situations advocate without saying a word. Get a picture of the license plate and car in the space, report it and no one gets hurt.

      Classic: malignant narcissist. He could be used as a teaching example. They HATE being called out and "proven wrong" never mind how politely it is done. Normal people would move, somewhat sheepishly, especially if the person addressing them is with someone that is visibly disabled. They certainly would not explode, and as they are _rational_ (and feeling somewhat guilty about it), they would hope not to be reported and fined.
      Narcissism is different than having anger issues, which are not triggered when asked nice and they returned to calm.
      Also the ease with which he lied. It is one thing to deny that he called her names (he is not going to self implicate in front of the police). It is another thing to claim they insulted him:

      Not to mention the 100s of invisible disabilities and illnesses that may see a person getting out of the car and walking away from it that doesn’t make them undeserving of the space like so many people think they are. They aren’t just for wheelchair users.

      Damn, Cole was pissed. I know someone coming at your fiance and you being in a compromised position can be overwhelming. But you did defend her. In situations like this, dealing with irrational individuals it is best to just keep it moving. Rather than acknowledging he was in the wrong, he lashed out. But you do have to have something to defend yourself with and your rights. God bless you both. The Lord will protect you from harm. You are doing a great work, you are a great team. Stay positive! Much love and respect sent your way.

    Ya know, I’ve seen people park in handicap that aren’t handicap and I’ve always spoken up about it. I am handicap myself and I’ve been cursed by elderly people for using the handicap space. If there is a regular spot close I will typically take it unless I’m having a bad pain day. I’ve had to get ugly with people before showing them my internal pain pump scars and told them my story of having 6 back surgeries. It is absolutely crazy to me that people are that rude to others who clearly NEED the handicap space! I will very very very seldomly park next to the hash marks because someone with a wheelchair or scooter may need that area. I’m so sorry you went through this but glad you have each other. Cole you are doing a perfect job defending your future wife. Your voice is what she needs! She has your love!

      Marisol white In NY they also have buses that can take pictures of your license plate if you’re in the bus lane. Then they mail a ticket to you. Even if you were in the lane only for a short while. You can only be in a bus lane to turn.

    I’m so sorry this happened to you! I have a disability placard for my son who has level 3 Autism, and every single day without fail, when I go to pick him up from school, there is a gentleman who parks in the handicap spot who is not disabled. I’ve asked him to move twice in the past, and he told me he’s 66 years old and doesn’t have to do a darn thing I ask him. I’ve complained to the school about it and still nothing has been done. It’s extremely frustrating so I definitely feel for you guys!

    there are some people who just think that they have a right to be inconsiderate of other people's needs. I once kindly informed a man that it is illegal to smoke inside of a bus shelter. I have asthma, and I needed to wait for the bus in that spot. of course he cussed me out and said "who the F**k do you think you are?" Literally I was so polite and he went from zero from 100 in a second. Some people are just assholes. you cant control it. You can only control who you are as a person and how you respond to situations.

    I’m sorry- the wrong thing to do is try to educate people when they are breaking the law. Unfortunately- not everybody will take it as if you’re being nice and informing them, they will take it as an insult. He could’ve been high, on drugs, drunk. Not safe;( Best thing to do next time is call the police. Being that Cole is not in a position to protect himself, that should be more of a reason why you guys call for help rather than take matters into your own hands. God bless you guys and don’t let that fool get you down! Xo
