Hi Hunter this IS quite easy. Just did it in 1 hour and 45 minutes. the wires on the starter was the most difficult part in my opinion. Thanks for the info about rotating the solenoid to remove the starter.
Yeah, anytime I see "remove this exhaust part", I know I'm in for a very bad time. Kudos to you for getting that apart w/o shearing the bolts. I'd rather take half the front suspension apart than touch rusted, heat seized exhaust bolts.
Hes right its easy to do it this way. The only thing is suggest is removing the muffler hangers for more flexibility. Youll need 17, 15, 16 and 13mm sockets. 15 mm wrench as well.
Im sure if I ever have to do this again it won't be the same way as I've sense swapped to Long Tube Headers. Im sure ill post another video if that day comes🤣
@@hunterbates1561hi 👋 a mechanic replaced my starter on my 3.5 l charger and also he removed the mufler then when finish check engine light come on it has some codes from the Oxygen sensors any idea what's wrong ?
Lol. At that time I had emptied my cats because the combs broke loose and were rattling in the pipes. Few months after this, i did long tube headers, high flow cats, x-pipe, and duals out the back. I modified spark plugs non-faulers and put them on the O2 sensors to trick the computer into thinking the cats were still there so it would run right.
@@hunterbates1561 I wish that still worked on newer cars. The computer tests the sensors periodically and won't work. IDK what people will do when their emissions warranties are up and CA cats are $2-$3k.
Been working on a 2008 charger with my boyfriend for the last few days, we have been tussling with the starter to come out after breaking the rusty bolts lose on the main pipe and still couldn’t figure out what was going on. I told him to detach the cables from the starter and he wouldn’t listen, thanks for this video because sure enough - it was tension from starter cables 😅
I came across this video way after I already done dropped my rack an pinion I only stumbled across this because I was Looking for on how someone had found a way to pull the starter out from that tight space because inwas having that problem when I pulled the steering rod out of the way and plus I don't think I could be able to remove my exhaust like that it's so rusty I know I'm bound to bust some bolts on that so I plan not to do that otherwise this is pretty good video by the way I'll remember that next time if theres a next time
Its best to spray the collector bolts with PB blaster, let it soak. Than run the car till it get hot, than crack them loose. Let it cool down and continue. But I'm glad it could help you!
When you remove the cables from the starter be very careful with the single signal wire. The connector is made of really brittle plastic. It just pulls off but its gonna be brittle.
Looks easy enough until you live in the rust/saltbelt region then those Exhaust bolt aren't coming off as easy as it looks. But good shortcut vid though.
I just did this job if you have headers you won't have to take exhaust off. You just have to move shift cable and a/c line and slide starter right out. But that's only if you have headers.
If you're exhaust bolts are all rusted out, please don't attempt this. Just take the steering column out. Which imo is way easier anyway. Those bolts WILL break, and then you'll have a nightmare on your hands. 😅
Okay so great video first off second I managed to just take off the exhaust where it meats the engine and push it up out the way just enough to squeeze that starter out and same to get in but what I had issues with is the bolts that go back on the stater up stop and the little tab you have to push back that sits in between the stater but once I got that everything was cake also helps if you have small or skinny hands I have non of those my hands are big and fat so lucky my nephew can in couch 😂 but very bull Sh*** engineering
@@hunterbates1561 would you only use the shim if your old one used it? The new starter I ordered didn’t come with a shim, but I still used the shim with it.
@@jordanchamberlain4377 my original did not have a shim so I did not add one and it was properly engaging. If the starter engages fine without the shim than no worries. The shim is to ensure proper engagement of the bendix on the flywheel teeth if its extending past the flywheel.
@@hunterbates1561 thank you for the prompt response and for the info. I was worried I’d have to take it all back apart to get the shim out lol. Good thing! That was not fun
All you need to do is that lower bolt not the top one he was doing in video, I've replaced two now and the lower bolt comes off pretty easy, only problem I have is the wires are in a pretty bad place to move
First off you don’t remove the steering column you just take out one bolt from the bottom. This is definitely not the easiest way to do it...😂 you can tell that from the 1st min of the vid🤦♂️

So far this is the best one yet for replacing a starter
Im glad I can help.

@@thechampion9525 make sure the O2 sensors are properly plugged in and the wires are not pinched or twisted too much.
@@hunterbates1561 thanks I will check that 👍
Good video...bout to do one tomorrow and didn't wanna mess with that steering rack...hope this works
Just pulled my buddys charger in the garage now going to try to knock this out fast thank you!!!
Good luck, let me know if it works out for you.
@@hunterbates1561 got it done in a hour and fifteen minutes. Only removed one side of the exhaust and starter came right out! Thank you so much!

Great video. Always good to have options for vehicles in different conditions. Noce o2 sensors lol

I did it just like you said.!! It was easier than what I thought

Thanks! I might attempt to do it myself. Mine is acting up latley. Gotta wait for the car to cool down and then she'll start.

Mine does the same thing
Best video ever
Appreciated
Great video but that exhaust can and will be a headache for most, from all the rust

Yeah I put longtubes on shortly after that. Made so much more room.

Wonder if this will work on a 13
I have 2007 charger 2.7 maybe it's the same method as the 3.5 I'll see if this works for me :) thanks for ur video
The 2006-2010 3.5l is all the same.
Awesome thanks!!!!

My exact dilemma! My bolts are extremely rusted and wont budge even after a generous dose of WD40.
Rack and pinion lowered is alot easier than dealing with a rusty exhaust or steering shaft.
What's rust?

It work for 06 dodge magnum?
I can't tell if you're filming it at weird angles. Or if something is different because the top of my exhaust looks nothing like what you're showing
What tools will I need
I did it all with a socket and wrench set. No specialized tools needed.
would this work on a 2.7liter
How the hell you break the bolts on the exhaust I’m doing this job now and their are seized
@danieljohnson5113 heat and penetrant or a crayon.
So... when you have to replace a starter your better off to sell the car?
No its really not difficult to replace. It seems like a good bit of work just to do, but it's easy.
Was there a gasket between the starter/motor?
No gasket between the starter and bell housing. There may or may not be a starter shim if your old one needed it.
@@hunterbates1561 would you only use the shim if your old one used it? The new starter I ordered didn’t come with a shim, but I still used the shim with it.

Much easier and less parts to damage thanks.
Glad I could be of some help.
What tools do I need for this bud?
Just a simple socket set that will get in all areas.
easier to remove steering shaft, and you dont have an exhaust leak when youre done.
Great ❤
This is NOT the easiest way in the rust belt. Remove the 2 supporting bolts for the steering rack and lower it. This is the easiest way.
That’s right I just did it that way I just had some one in top holding the steering wheel for rack couldn’t rotate
I actually found it easier to just unbolt the steering shaft
Mine wouldn't budge so I went the exhaust route.
All you need to do is that lower bolt not the top one he was doing in video, I've replaced two now and the lower bolt comes off pretty easy, only problem I have is the wires are in a pretty bad place to move
just did brakes and an oil change, went to my job interview then it didn’t start when I got back lmfao at least I got to my job and back 😭
Tomorrow I will replace my starter
The cables is my problem
This doesn’t apply to anyone in the rust belt area.

cool thanks 😊

I second the exhaust, the one bolt for the steering just unscrew and wiggle it up, comes right off
