  • Junior Johnson, a true legend of the sport, left an indelible mark on Nascar. During the 1956 Nascar Grand National Series race at Daytona Beach Junior flips his '56 Pontiac chasing Tim Flock for the lead. Upon coming to rest, Junior jumps out the back window of his car and runs across the track while cars race past him. What a badass!

That's a Pontiac he's pushing. They were big into racing until GM decided that racing sent the wrong message to the little old church ladies they thought were buying their cars...

Aside from Johnson no longer being with us, I've never seen a video of this crash let alone to this being colorized with great quality, thank you. Also there were a bunch of cars parked lined up right next to the racing area.

Jeff Burton competed for 26 years across all NASCAR series and never once flipped, I know of a few drivers, such as Jesse Samples Sr. who only ever ran one race and managed to flip in it.

Weird thing about this wreck back in the day, when the photographers took pictures of Johnsons car, because his car landed on its side many people were confused when they read the news papers because they thought Junior Johnson was running outside of the car, whilst he was still flipping. This is all insanity. It's insane they'd race cars as fast as they could go... on a sand surface. Paved roads existed plenty back then.. yet someone thought racing on sand made more sense. And it's insane he gets out of the car.. while cars are flying by lol. What a world.

Read up a bit on Daytona Beach. It's wide, flat and firmly packed, and one of the first places people were going for the land speed record back in the earliest days of automobiles. Somewhere back in the 30's, some guys got the idea of closing off the road along the beach and making an oval, one way pavement, back on sand. I'll bet it started with some guys goofin off and turned into a sanctioned event. Back before liability lawyers discovered a way to skim money off of misfortune.

Jr.'s '55 didn't quite seem that beat up in the roll. I think he could've continued if he'd've flipped it back over and cleared the engine from being upside down like Dale Earnhardt did once unless there was fuel leaking all over the place inside of the car.
