- Canon EOS R with RF 15-35mm f2.8 vs Olympus EM1 Mark III with Leica 12mm f1.4. Now that Olympus has phase detection, is it as good as Canon's dual pixel autofocus in video? There are levels to phase detection autofocus, some more polished than others. Can Canon compete with Olympus stabilization? Lens + digital vs IBIS + digital.

Arrgh! You went back to 30P, which looks more like a computer game...
Stephen Howe you mean a console game. PC = 60fps+
I bet olympus is making a 12mm 1.2. They even had a board meeting about it.
Boss: All right fellas, CC is finally coming to our side and loving our camera. He even requested a new fast lens ranging from 8mm to 10mm, any ideas?
Some guy: 12mm 1.2
Boss:... Youve got a raise!
Em5 vs em1 has they improved it?, I'd it worth it to buy the lesser model? Same ibis, same sensor....
@@emudojo The EM5 mk III is missing the Auto ISO in video mode so I doubt Kasey is interested in it, that's part of why he wrote on Olympus previously when he tested them. The IBIS is actually better in the EM1 mk III as well.
Olympus has been underrated for a long while now. Their art modes, whilst criticised as frivolous, are superb. Hope it’s not too late for them!
What are their Art modes, are they film simulations, painting effects or picture styles, or something like that? Sounds interesting.
@Michael Whyte That sounds like fun, I'll have to look those up and find some sample images online.
They are on the way up with their new cameras. Just wait for the Pen-F Mk ii. Camera to die for!
Olympus isnt going anywhere. They have a strong following and once people get a taste for the ibis, they never go back.
@@jf9979 Except the market data says that the vast majority of people indeed ditch MFT for full frame.
gotta say im liking the Olympus image quite a lot and the stab os very good
The little guy kicked ass. The Canon seemed to snap onto your eye a bit faster, but as soon at it lost you it goes to the background in microseconds and that looks bad. The Olympus stays a sec then glides to the background in a pleasing manner.
MOST DEFINITELY I LIKE THE COLOR ON THE EMI III AND ALSO HOW LIGHT IS COMPARE TO CANON
He uses completely different lenses. The Canon has one of the heaviest lenses attached. The Canon Body weighs with a battery 660g and the Olympus weighs 580g - not really noticeable
i didn't know which brand is which at the beginning of the vid. but judging from my personal preferences in color and detail shown, i told myself i liked the one on the left better. turns out it's the Olympus! Yay for Olympus!
Ditto, colour and sharpening alone was way nicer. Left.
Man... the Olympus is amazing! Best stabilization hands down, the C-AF is awesome (pretty similar to canon to be honest), and the colors are great! Well done Micro Four L...Winner! 👍
I'm a Micro Loser because of the size and weight advantage. Plus Olympus puts some pretty cool features into their cameras.
I took one look at the Grey in his beard and could immediately tell. The Canon is so much sharper.
The Canon Body weighs 660g and the Olympus 580g. Casey put the heaviest Canon Zoom Lens on the eos R and comparing it to a light Prime Lens from Olympus. Thats not really fair
MFT is neither lighter nor smaller in proper apples to apples comparisons.
@@youknowwho9247 How so? It is ligher, smaller and cheaper.
@@RimantasLiubertas It's none of those things in apples to apples comparisons. You're probably making the mistake of comparing f/2.8 MFT glass to f/2.8 to frame glass. That's nonsense. That f/2.8 MFT lens you're thinking of is equivalent to an f/5.6 full frame lens. Once you do crop factor conversion correctly, MFT is virtually always more expensive than full frame for comparable pieces of gear, and there are no weight or size savings.
Olympus really stepped up the AF in the Em1 Mark III. The face/eye AF for stills is fantastic.
Their AF has been great since E-P2.
Only their C-AF got better in speed with E-M1 from 2013.
Their video has always been very good, not best but very good. Only to lag behind Panasonic with 4K features and of course FF cameras by their sensors like 2006...
Before the reveal of which side was which, I was sure the Canon was on left because I liked the colors so much. Turns out I like Olympus colors better! Also stabilization is hands down the best.
Im so glad you said you liked the Olympus colours. It was the colours that really got my attention when first looking at this camera and couldnt understand why more people wasnt talking about it.
That's because too many people believe in the shit that Tony 'Loser' Northrup puts out.
"You have to first downscale before you can upscale..." Willie Wonka
I just love Olympus innovation and agility.
The days of lumbering cameras are over, unless a specific job requires it.
Olympus looks way better. Much better IBIS, colors, better highlights roll off, it's lighter and great features too.
You make the best videos :)
My EM1X is the best camera I've ever had and not missing Sony or full frame at all.
Olympus for color and IBIS
How are you judging colour? Have you seen him in real life? If he's red as a beetroot, then I agree with you. If he isn't then I disagree with you. Having never met Kasey I don't make wild subjective guesses.
cooloox well. I suspect he isn’t greenish as was shown by the Canon in this video.
@@RockyColaFizz I think something is wrong with your monitor then
Neither are greenish
@@jsnklsr5639 I noticed too there looks to be a green tint in the highlights of his face
cooloox Did you forget that Kasey asked a question? Everyone has an opinion, and you’re no different
That's it. If the GH6 doesn't have some form of PDAF, I'm going Olympus. I adore my G9, but I need reliable AF.
The Olympus seemed we'll underexposed for the whole presentation to me. It's stabilization was effective, though the canon w no stabilization was pleasing, too. The only downside was the image was far softer the the canon at all times. Alone, you might not notice these things, but compared, the canon was well ahead.
However, the field of view on the canon told a far better and interesting story.
From this vid alone, I'd buy the canon- hands down.
Excellent video as usual.
Thanks for this- this is exactly what I needed to NOT push me over the Canon cliff for full frame- yet again...your knowledge, plus your dry sense of humor made for a great video!!!
EM1 mk3 looking really nice...please Olympus improve video features in next firmware and give us a PDAF MFT camera that Panasonic won’t.
They have phase detect since the mark II, just a very poor implementation of it. It's an inherent limitation of the small sensor. Less light results in worse af.
The cinema 4K video from the Olympus looked quite a bit nicer yesterday. It had better resolution and the skin tones were way better. Your skin tone was to red today. Stabilization and Bokeh from the Olympus were fantastic.
Olympus has so much potential but they are completely ignoring video people.
I wish Olympus somehow would get this message and start a team to optimize video functions of the camera.
Unfortunately, even if they got the message Olympus will be out of the camera business next month.
I wonder if they have a backroom deal with Panasonic to not get into video too much
They will, like after 3 years or so.
My E-M1 OG... didn't even have 24p...
Until we were outraged and demanded it!
They finally did... years later. So patience...
@@r4vik I thought that too...
They are planning support for 4K and 8K video, but not anytime soon.
Awesome video, man. Love the tunes 👍
Super handy to hear the settings you used, and where you think you messed up. That's the spice I can learn from and get an idea.
I think the canon had better AF and seemed to be better with backlight and low light. But not much better. Not much. And Olympus has way better stabilization. The smoothness really looks pro.
I’m so happy you do these side-by-side reviews.
I have to say, the Olympus autofocus, colours and stabilisation are better.
Better than what? The AF most definitely was not better than the Canon. As for colour, if his face is really that red, then yes the colour is more accurate, but if he's not a beetroot, then no, it's not as accurate.
I laugh at how people judge colour without having a clue what he looks like in real life.
The stabilisation was definitely better on the Olympus, but duh, IBIS vs digital IS, what do you expect?
Colour is subjective cooloox, it's all about what is more pleasing not which is more accurate. I have some redness in my face, but not much. Olympus looks a little warmer, I prefer the Canon colours actually. AF was better on the Canon, though at times the Olympus was faster. Both are great but Canon is a bit smoother. Stabilization was Olympus hands down. Let's not forget the Canon was unusably heavy. That lens was not designed to vlog with lol. Canon needs lighter wide glass to even consider them in the future. Some nice f1.8 primes would be good.
AF was definitely far better on the Canon.
@@cameraconspiracies Don't you mean 1.2...?
@@cameraconspiracies ==> Colour...OMG, you Canadiens...It's COLOR!
It's not perfect, but usable, I like the Olympus too. I don't understand why M4/3s is considered so challenged by the size of it's sensor. Different gains, as with cinema cameras, should now be de facto, even across different parts of the sensor. Look at what phones can do... just stack the sensors. Perhaps another 5 years yet, but as a piece of kit you'd always have with you the Olympus wins-easily, and it looks nice! Great video.
I can't watch your videos with Canon cameras. The colors are always so messed up compared to when I use Canon cameras. I don't know what your settings are but I can only guess it has something to do with the white balance setting you use. Are you using Auto white priority? I prefer Auto ambient. Also have you tried adjusting the color shift? You find it in the quick menu (q) button. It's in the white balance in a submenu labeled info. There you can add Green Blue Amber or Magenta. I usually add some blue because Canon usually shifts red.
The image stabilization superpowers of Olympus are unmatched.
We have to wait for canons first mirrorless with Ibis, and the we will see
If I were to buy a camera to vlog, I’d definitely buy an XT-4 or E-M1 III. The Fuji still has a lot better colors but the Olympus has more stable IBIS. The Fuji has more dynamic range and 10bit. I shoot Sony but keep looking at that Fuji. The Fuji colors are undeniable.
Loved your footwork when you were the Focus Ninja, completely forgot to look at how the cameras performed. Thanks for the tests and the laughs.
He should have enabled animal autofocus on the cameras to let them track him in that shot...
I been eyeing the olympus for a while i like the compact size
Not sure what you were going for in this video, but what you showed was that the Canon R produces a better image than the Olympus EM1. Either camera would work okay for vlogging though.
I have FINALLY seen the cinematic dumpster look! My life is now complete.
I'm surprised more people aren't going for the EOS R in the comments. It has better dynamic range and focusing, but is heavier and I don't like the colors. Happy to see that you finally like a camera as much as the G85. Shout out to the person who sent it to him. Legend. Can I have a XT3 for photography please? 🤞
The backlighting and the focus is great on the Canon.
I notice people are saying the image is better on the Olympus but I disagree. The image on the Olympus is a little over saturated. If you're used to looking at oversaturated images such as those on mobile phones then you'd be forgiven for accepting this as the norm but for a more realistic image the Canon is much better.
I think both are fine. Olympus may need to adjust metering to the face detection box. Just a bit more balance between face and preserving highlights -- I guess it is harder because of less dynamic range. That stabilization on the Olympus, though, is very good. Focus is comparable, Canon a tad smoother. Anyway, can't go wrong with the Olympus, especially when weight is concerned, but the video functionality does need user improvement, it seems.
You've brought us the glory of the dumpster back lot, again!
Best camera tests/reviews ever. Tony who???
Digging that music during the autofocus test.
Has Olympus gifted us all mortals with the perfect camera?
Yes! and then killed it dead with it’s price. They ain’t sellin’ many of these at that price. ($3000 body here in Aus)
Greg Dower pity about the price seriously!!
You pay what you get. I shot landscapes and no other camera in the market gives me what the EM1.3 is giving me in terms of weight, sealing, DOF (I save a lot of photos when I focus stack), 50MPx handheld with amazing noise ratio and colors quality (not affected by bayer filter), amazing stabilization, no need of tripod if I go to the forest or to shot waterfalls, live view, life composite (for me is critical), LiveND... And remember... I hike with my 7-14, 12-40,40-150 (all 2,8), 8 1,8, extender x1,4 for the 50-150, and the impressive 17 1.2. All for 1800€!! It is a lot of money... I agree, but not expensive in any way
Of course, if I was using it mainly at night, I would never ever buy a M43, but there is a camera for each need.
@@moisescugat3948 I'm sure it looks good coming from a smartphone. Try a professional grade landscape camera like the D850 or a7r IV some time though. You'll get much, much better results.
They’re selling well at my LCS, but perhaps I live in a hot bed of µ4/3 conspirators.
I got tired of taking pictures with my gh5, thanks to your reviews my Mark iii is coming this week! can't wait to play with it. Keep up your work! you are a true comedian btw
It was a very useful video for me who was worried about whether to buy Micro Four Thirds or APSC or buy full size.ありがとうございます。
Impressive focus and colors on the Olympis. I actually just broke down and bought the Canon EOS 90D. Best camera that I could afford.
Hopefully it will work well for me... your review of it helped me make my decision. Thanks.
The 90D is incredible good for Pictures and Video. Use a good, light lens and you are good to go
I love the EOS R but the EM1 Mk III has nothing to be ashamed of. Olympus all the way!
I hope you keep the Olympus I think it looks best out of all your cameras so far.
Robin Wong, the Olympus Visionary, an ambassador to Olympus Malaysia, would be so proud of you.
You can de-fish the 8mm oly on the em1-3 for photos and video......somewhere in that extensive menu.....with a little crop
I know it's subjective, but every time you've said you liked another exposure better than the Olympus, I've disagreed. Admittedly, I'm an Olympus fanboy, but I do think there's a tendency to over expose in photography today, and I think it has a lot to do with auto exposure overcompensating for low light so you'll get a recognizable image. To me, the Olympus seems to generally do a better job. Of course, I always shoot manual, which is really easy on an Olympus!
It's because it's much darker on the screen. The actual video usually looks pretty good.
I dumped Canon for Olympus and glad you are able to see the benefits. The “bright” lenses are on the roadmap
The autofocus test is good content.
Olympus is awesome:)
I'm really getting inspired watching your vids mate... I always get a good laugh. makes me work harder on my own channel - all the support is highly welcomed and appreciated.
Wow Olympus, not bad 👍👍
To me R is better, and I'm not biased just because own Canons from1973, I enjoy your sense of humor, Peter mcCanon, Daniel Shifter, James Mat-use, Tomato Jet and other can learn a lot about sincerity, PurpleDone guy is good, also Markus.
cool! all the big youtubers are ignoring microlooserFT - thanks you don't!
Sandals for the win! Great test. Thanks!
The little micro looser is under exposing to prevent the highlights from clipping ,while the Canon blows them so hard that you think you're in a different dimension.Either way they are doing it wrong, one for the face other for the highlights. That's were Fuji shines with the excellent exposure.
Thank you for a new word Kasey, fugly.......
I must say the Olympus is really impressive in performance to me. I normally use GH5.
even a loser has their redeeming qualities - wise words by CC
Cool! Oly is very nice
I love that reading the comments there are literally sections where one complements the colours from the R and criticises the EM1 then the next comment is the opposite, then the next comment is back on the R being sooo much better and then the one below is moaning about how awful the R is... really funny. Just illustrates how varied the opinions are and ultimately there is no “right answer”.
And also , nothing is perfect , perfection is a unicorn .....although my a73 is close :) ..... .
You can easily get a higher bitrate in situations like an interview or vlog if you use a appropriate card. Not every uhs ii card is equal. Not every card works with every camera. Shooting interview with cheap transcend 700s i got bitrate about 150 Mbps, shooting landscape i got bitrate 230Mbps -average (sometimes it exceeded 260Mbps and I don't know how it is possible). The same applies to photography. Shooting in the burst 10fps (I received 10.8fps) I got 450 shots!! , and the buffer was clear after 5,5 seconds. I got max 170 shots from lexar and 400 from toshiba. Toshiba costs 2 times more than transcend. Sandisc was good ,but not as good as toshiba and transcend.
EM1 iii wins here too. Fish eye distortion is correctable in post for the 8mm lens or the 9mm f/8 pancake (which I think you should use since Toneh is Sooooo pre-viral.)
Cute video. Shows nicely how the full frame does better even when you stack the deck in MFT's favor with a much faster lens.
I am impressed with Olympus EM1 Mark III... who'd have thought? $1600 USD, not too bad I guess... but I wouldn't be able to use it for what I need (hunting ghosts and bigfoot), due to the files breaking up. I record very long takes, hours... when you are hunting ghosts and bigfoot you can't stop rolling or you'll miss the action. Good stabilization is a must, decent autofocus that is good enough, and no overheating.
The HoBo-Log 400 graded for a little contrast/saturation AND a little bit of the HeTerna FujiLut was the best footage i’ve seen on this channel so far. But i’m a moron too, so we keep on learning😊
How can you compare a full frame to half a frame, I can say from experience of using both that the Olympus will be noisy the moment you crop your image compared to the EOSR
If you don't mind sticking with 1080p, the EOS R is better.
Try installing cinestyle on the Canon... It looks really nice.
I have a video showing how to install it and my settings with it.
The EM1 iii isn't tempting because of the broken up clips and irritating operation.
You can adjust focus speed and sensitivity on the canon its in one of the last menus, orange tab i believe, no where near the autofocus menu lol. But yeah its pretty good with everything on zero
Super psyched Kasey that you're enjoying the EM1 III. I knew It would be the camera that offers the most for what you're trying to do. What's better, higher bitrate for color correction or using an aweosme picture straight out of camera?
Well Kasey -- despite you shooting, editing, upscaling and uploading in thirty-seven different resolutions -- the video looks pretty good! I'd say that the AF for the Oly and EOS-R are very comparable. The stab of the Oly (where you have everything turned on) is a bit better than the Canon. The exposure differs between the two -- but they are different cameras with differing technology -- but the biggest factor is the *OPERATOR* -- you! :-)
so entertaining and informing again!
OLYMPUS:
1. Better colors.
2. Best stabilization.
3. More cinematic look.
4. Great enough AF.
CANON:
1. Sharper.
2. Faster AF...
3. Great enough stabalization.
Real-time comments while viewing:
- Olympus won stablization. Canon won the AF and is much, MUCH sharper. I could see every stubble hair at close range. Whether that's a good thing is in the eye of the artist.
- Not sure what F stops you shot at. Much more bokeh in the Olympus but you yourself looked soft.
- That closing sound clip is just great with the bass cranked up.
Olympus is better but for that price I will go FF or XT4 which gives you 10bit color.
very impressed by the olympus but the cost of it ruins it, and as you said average lens options but very nice picture
Unless you have canon glass already, the eosr with the wide prime is a very expensive combo.
Average glass options... huh? M43 has been around for quite a while and has an extensive lineup of high quality lenses. Often-times with numerous options. The lens mentioned in this video is one people have been asking for, though. Some manner of first party f/1.8 or f/2 superwide prime with autofocus. That Laowa 7.5mm manual focus is pretty cool, though.
You can correct the fish eye lenses distortion in camera automatically. You only have to set "how much you want to de-fish". This is useful with the 8mm 1.8 lense.
Nice follow up! Can’t say more with my the new mark iii ;) colour science is always been great, just because all been ignoring ‘O’ lol
I feel like there is a LUT for the cinematic dumpster look coming up soon...
I think the focus was faster on the olympus which is crazy but its something about the olympus where it had a little bit more saturation than i like but hey good job. love your channel even though i use sony as my system. keep up the good job.
Shocked by the olympus autofocusing system
I know right? It's incredible that they'd release such a bad system in 2020.
Right a genuine comment for a change, Olympus image looked a bit soft compared to Canon, did you over soften the settings?
I knew which was which by the saturated colour of the Olympus. I had to uhm and ah a bit about it before I settled on that as the deciding factor.
Nice weather in Kentucky!
Hi casey
Thanks for the laughs mate. Tip for you
Please set the canon R white balance to kelvin 5.400 not auto it will give you a better result.
I use manual white balance all the time with my XF400 camcorder and the 7Dmk2 + the Osmo Action Camera to film wildlife and my self
I leave them at K 5.400 all the time for out side use
Cheers Derek
As soon as I started the video, I thought
"Well, the image on the left looks like an anti-drug & alcohol advertisement. The one on the right looks beautifully cinematic in its soft, even lighting and pleasing colors/tones... The left must be the Olympus".
Knew you'd come around for olympus 😇
Cool music in 1:50
Canon does have some advantages at certain areas, but overall I like the Olympus better, at least with those settings your used.
You can change/adjust focus modes/methods/etc. with the EOS R but that might be the easiest thing to find in Canon's menu system (which I like overall, but didn't find until months after having my Canon).
I still don't see it lol.
Stabilization on the Oly is FAR superior in this video. Auto focus is compatible, Canon only slightly better. Pity about the price.
Yeah price, but will lowering the price cause that much more sales for Olympus? Could Olympus go with only good, better, best, $599, $999 and $1299 pricing? I guess Olympus thinks the buyers will stay the same at $1299 or $1799, or the uptake in buyers will not be enough. But, of course, it's the chicken and the egg. I think Olympus could have taken the value position, especially if they had focussed on video years before, and carved themselves a nice following. They could have taken market share from Panasonic, for sure. IBIS and PDAF are the things to attract a lot of videographers/vloggers if the value proposition is met. Olympus could have owned the market, despite micro four loser sensor size. If only they saw that years ago. Now the market has become tough.
Very cool.
First time I prefer the canon over anything in one of your comparisons.
Little guy did it y'all
Olympus Dynamic range is superior 😱
No, it's not.
Why not try night video to try the high ISO, and the AF will drop on the low light condition, will see who's win ...
Excellente vidéo et longue vie au micro quatre tiers ;)
I've seen on other channels EOS R delivering glorious footage. Your somehow doesn't. That's a talent too, though! Squeezing the worst of it :D
Perfect...!
That Canon lens had pretty bad CA, I don't see how that can be pinned on user error. One of Canons big primes would look nicer. You seen any other videos with Canon R camera side by side with an E-M1iii?
I'm surprised that the RF glass is much sharper than the Leica glass. I wish I could see you in real life to see which is the most realistic representation of your face. Each is fine by itself but different side by side. I like the Canon's rep better. You look like you got too much sun with the Oly. Except for that and the autofocus vs. the Canon it works fairly well after your adjustments. It's been wonderful that you have had so much time to work on them.
Looks like Olympus has a bit better dynamic range ;)
