Aye man props to you for still going thru with the video upload. OBVIOUSLY, we can't always have the best results when we are filming by ourselves and are unable to monitor the audio and focus. But AGAIN shout out to you for still uploading the content despite the mistakes. Also, the wind noise actually wasn't that bad. Good stuff!

Good video. Thanks for making it. I switched from HSS to ND filters ( I use the sensor clip in filters) about a year ago, and for me the main benefit has been enabling me to downsize my strobes to smaller, lighter units. I sold my AD400 and AD200 and replaced with an AD300 and AD100. I’m always looking to carry less gear and this is a perfect solution for that.
@Steve Rogers it's very interesting to me that you made those switches; I do understand the size and weight differences, but to me both of those flashes are overpriced, especially the AD100, but if size and weight is important, cost is irrelevant. I appreciate you watching and commenting.

This was a fun video, and the audio was no big deal… but your video made me realize why I never encounter this problem: My outdoor still photography shoots are always morning or evening magic hour, which not only serves as a kind of “natural ND filter,” but also a more flattering color & direction of ambient light anyway.
Absolutely @brotherted9212, if you can schedule all your shoots around those times, it's definitely useful. But, many times, it doesn't work that way, and knowing how to still achieve quality images is important.

😂😂😂😂 "TMIDD" is now a verb 🤦♂️. Great video and examples to show the difference and benefit to using the ND filter versus HSS. ND filters are really useful my goto is the B+W brand great quality!
"TMIDD" is definitely a verb now hahaha. My OCD wouldn't let me have a broken screen on my strobes so I have to make sure they don't have a meeting with the ground lol. B+W is the only brand filters I use; I did some exhaustive testing a couple years ago and found no image degradation so it's my brand of choice 100%. And the brass threads help a TON with preventing seizing.

Again, another great video, obviously. When shooting with an SLR we had to try to focus and compose through 8-stops of ND and HHS was great for the user experience. But now you have me thinking that with mirrorless, shooting with ND and staring at nearly a black image shouldn't be an issue.
@John Gress it's definitely a hell of a lot easier on mirrorless with expo simulation being off (by default due to flash). Using my 3-stop isn't too bad even with a DSLR but when using my 6-stop, it was a serious struggle. With my R5, no issues whatsoever although I rarely need a 6-stop in this situation.

Forget about the wind, your video is extremely helpful since I have been running into problems with lack of flash power in HSS mode. I can't wait to try to compensate with an ND filter ... thanks!!
I'm glad this video was helpful @Dietrich Abraham! ND's are definitely the way to go unless you either a) are on the move and only need HSS for a quick shot or b) you have something like an AD400 or AD600 that has ample power to accommodate the loss. Even still, I personally think HSS is unnecessary wear and tear on the bulb so I avoid it at all costs.

Thanks for making a video demonstrating the difference. I've seen so many videos saying you lose 3 stops with HSS, but they use a 3 stop ND to make up for it. I was always left wondering if there was a real benefit.
This shows that 3 stops isn't really 3 stops.

@HNSB there is a flash power loss when using HSS, but I don't know how many stops it is. My light meter doesn't allow for HSS metering so I can't even test it. I guess it doesn't matter, the important thing to note is that your flash power is decreased, quite significantly too when you're up in the higher power settings.
Anthony Toglife using Sketonic 858-d I can tell you the power loss depends on the brand and the model.
There is a ton of difference. Especially the higher the SS is over sync speed the more you loose.

@@AnthonyToglife Hvl-f60rm2, very powerful, more compact than i thought, range 20-200mm, face detection recognition, Sto-fen diffuser, and color filter included. I like the bigger screen because my sight is very bad. i like the dedicated button + and - for flash compensation. my a7c looks like pro with the smallrig 3212 cage/grip and the sony flash..

the only downside to nd filters is that if you get into 6 stops (or more), you have to prefocus before putting the filters on. af (as far as i know) won't function with the image being that dark. your subject would need to be pretty stationary.
but i mainly shoot older mf glass. maybe newer lenses and cameras are capable of focusing through darker nd filters.
This would be the case with DSLR cams but not so for mirrorless. Sense mirrorless focus with the actual sensor, it adjusts the exposure to be able to get focus without issue. I use 6 stop ND’s quite frequently with video, and there’s never an issue grabbing focus.

It’s difficult doing this type of video with a model due to timing, and I typically don’t record YT vids with clients as my sessions aren’t long and it takes a while to record these videos. Out of curiosity, what do you think would be different with a model versus what’s in this video?

Hahaha, well @Nicklas Jansson, that would be because I'm a procrastinator and haven't bought a step-up ring to be able to fit my ND on the lens I film with.
Audio might be a little fiddly but that demonstration of the autofocus when you grabbed the light stand was more than worth it

Yeah @Krusty, I use HSS when I'm super pressed for time but otherwise I'll always use an ND, if nothing else to save on the wear and tear on my lights.

ND filters are the way to go @Art_by _Adrian2. I know some people bulk at them but I personally would rather get the most out of my flash unless I'm in a hurry. TMIDD is my guy, I'm always giving him sh** about something, lol.

Great video and really good info. I've been shooting for 3 years and now I've started using speedlights more. "Obviously" 😂 I'm looking for more info to help me learn a new style. That and ND filters are new to me too. "Again," the wind wasn't too bad. I can see why you'd want to reshoot the video though. Thanks for the content and helping other photog types like myself. Great video. I'm an audio engineer, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well that lav picked up clean audio so much so that it seems like the wind Boise was captured separately and added in. What mic is that? I'm definitely going to grab a few. Maybe use some skin safe tape or reverse mount under the shirt. 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾

@mirobalic3613 I ALWAYS advocate for going OEM but I do get the prices can sometimes be prohibitive. That being said, I have heard that auto focusing isn’t as goof with the Meike adapter and the camera often throws error codes. Use at your own risk if you go that route.

@@mirobalic3613 hands down, yes, absolutely as good, and with many of the filters on the market today, the RF adapter ND's are better. Not to mention the ease of changing lenses and still having ND is beneficial. The downside, however, is when you don't need an ND, there's nothing to put in the slot when you have the ND removed, so you either have to keep it open, which will allow dust and things to reach your sensor, or you'll have to swap out to a non-ND adapter.

I remember your comment about HSS vs. ND from a recent video. Glad you followed up. Do you always use a. 3 step ND filter or do you meter the difference between subject and background and select a filter based on that ratio?
Hey my friend, I usually use a 3 stop. Anything greater than that and it becomes challenging to compensate the flash. Sometimes a 4 stop would be better but I only have a 3, 6, and 10 stop. Great question sir.
Really depends how fast your lens will be. 2.8 vs 1.4 is 2 stops difference
This is where Variable ND filter is handy. No need to carry several ND filters, just one.
The only thing cumbersome about taking off nd filters is when they get stuck
At some point one will have an experience with a stuck filter, lol.
Good video do you normally shoot In manual mode?
Thank you @dj mauce. If you're referring to manual mode shooting stills, the answer would be no. I sometimes use aperture and shutter priority modes depending on the shoot. For flash, yes, always manual. I've never got into TTL when shooting flash, I just prefer to use my light meter and adjust the settings manually.

Hey @Cezarygon, it depends on how many stops of ambient you need to cut out. I usually use shutter speed to figure it out. If I know my max flash sync speed is 1/250, I count how many stops from my ambient exposure it would take to get me to my flash sync speed. For example, if my desired ambient exposure is 1/2000s, I can calculate I need a 3-stop ND filter to get me to 1/250s.

What about if you are working with TTL?
No change @Patrick B. TTL essentially picks your flash power setting for you, it won’t change the fact that HSS reduces overall “effective” power.
Which ND filter brand did you use?
I exclusively use B+W filters! I did some extensive testing with them and found no image degradation and minimal color cast, so they’re the ones I trust.

#Anthony Toglife, i have seen many video where one says about using ND FILTER rather than HSS. I have one doubt...I got the point how much it ll b helpful in bright sunny day...but WHAT about CAPTURING action? will there any use of ND FILTER then or one has to use HSS on d powerful strobe to freeze the action?
@Praveen Kumar it would depend on the action you're trying to capture but in general you likely would NOT use an ND in those cases since a faster shutter speed would be desired. There's always trade-offs in photography. :-D
Question: when you throw on the ND do you white balance with it attached?
I do. Because I shoot RAW and WB can be changed in post with zero impact to the image, I don’t worry much about WB. I shoot auto WB most of the time.
Hi Anthony Toglife. Do you have any recommendations for an ND filter? I'm thinking of buying one for my canon 24-70 2.8ii (82mm) and using step down filters for use on my other lenses.
@Leon Chen I have a TON of filters, all of them are B+W! Their filters are quality, great glass, brass threads, no image degradation. Obviously they aren't cheap, but I would highly advise against getting any cheap filter. No sense in having quality glass and putting it behind some cheap filter. Hoya has a line of good filters as well. (Side note, I did some rigorous testing with all my ND filters to assure there was no noticeable image degradation.)

you need hss when you shoot actions, sports - nd filters not good for this
Well, you typically don’t use flash when shooting sports, but if you’re referring to fast movement in general, not necessarily. The flash can freeze action just the same (if not better) than shutter speed, as flash durations are shorter than even the max shutter speed (depending on power). If there’s movement in the background as well, then yes, HSS would be the better choice.
@@AnthonyToglife I shoot beach volleyball competitions. I have special permission for shooting with flash (if players do not mind). I can say exactly - ND gives you not so good result. Yep, you need HSS snd high power (ad600 or more powerful)
