I got the 16GB ram 1TB Mac mini for the flexibility, whether it’s on my desk or connected to my TV as a media center, I think the Mac mini will age better as you can always update the screen.

Same here, I have the base with 16Gb. If I did not already have a monitor(s) I would consider the iMac, I use dual 34" ultrawide and my kids have dual 24" dells, one of them is from 2006. Once the M2 mini is out I will buy one and the M1 mini will go to the kids.

Agree, if I were buying a new Mac, I'd so similar. With the mini you can upgrade monitor and keyboard - Apple keyboard is ok-ish, but its not HHKB (Topre switch)/Filco quality. And monitor - I think again, there are alternatives out and you can choose the budget to suit what you need.

You missed the most important difference and best reason for mini.
I’ve got Mac mini ($650) with 28in 4K display ($350) and love it. I already own a keyboard, mouse and wired speakers that cost $30 but sound fantastic. Now I can upgrade my computer every 2 years no problem. This is the real benefit to mini vs. iMac. I sell my mini on eBay in 2 years for $300-350 and get the newest one. In the end I’m going to be spending $125-175 per yr and never having outdated hardware. Honestly, my Netflix now cost more than that. Previously, I would buy an iMac and wait 4-6yr because it’s another chunk of money to replace; staying miserable with slower computer for the last of those years. Mini FTW!

    • @obscvre

But you can always sell off the iMac as well though it's not like the iMac's gonna decrease in value much compared to Mini?

    • @TheGreatestJuJu
      @TheGreatestJuJu 3 роки тому +16

@@obscvre let’s say the depreation value is 40% (just an example, no idea what it really is), 40% of 1300 is a lot more than 40% of $650. For your argument, you’d have to prove that for some reason they lost value at much grater rates from each other. I’m just going to guess losing a percentage of a more expensive initial item is always going to end up costing more than taking depreciation value of an item with cheaper up front cost.

@@TheGreatestJuJu So you're not upgrading your monitor at all in those two year? Okay, maybe it's not a big deal over the span of a couple years, but eventually you're going to be buying a new monitor, which isn't cheap if you're buying one on par with the quality of an iMac monitor. A 27" 5k monitor is easily going to run you over a grand, regardless of the brand. Your comparison isn't exactly apples to apples when you leave out the cost of a new monitor. Maybe a good monitor isn't essential for what you use your computer for, but for a lot of people who use Macs, the quality of the monitor is important (photography, videography, graphic design, etc.)

    • @TheGreatestJuJu
      @TheGreatestJuJu 3 роки тому +7

@@brandonb.5304 The next monitor I upgrade to won’t even be a monitor but some version of VR or AR, 6-8 years from now. I believe 4k is future proof enough for the majority of casual users, you know the ones the iMac and Mini where designed for. If you are a professional in the visual arts and need fancier than that, you’re probably also a user that wants more than 27in (and more ram) or are into having the greatest tech which also isn’t 5k. Not only was I literally comparing Apples to Apples but figuratively comparing two products that offer almost completely identical performance, however, also have small caveats in the window dressings (accessories), by definition most would consider this an apples to apples comparison.

@@brandonb.5304 also that 28" 4k monitor must either be a heck of a deal or just far from apples standards in display quality. But i guess the nem imac did decrease in quality, back in the days a 27 inch model with 5k monitor was a bang for the buck considering the included screen, now the 24 inch 4,5k screen doesnt get my interest at all. i hope they someday announce a 27 inch 5k model with m1x and more than 2 ports on the back and the old design , i'd buy that. if they put the 24 inch design on the 27" machine i'll probably buy the cheapest mac mini and a monitor from a company that is not apple. i think the energy efficiency of the m1 is the only argurment pro apple atm. they deliver no ports, have always had trashy thermals, no right to repair and made it impossible to upgrade resulting in a planed absolescence with produces huge amounts of e-waste while same time greenwashing their company in the ads. Apple gone downhill since Tim.

The fact that a 10 year old computer still ran great made it easy on my decision on which computer I will be getting. I went to Apples website with the intent to purchase another 27" iMac, until I saw Mac Mini featured on the homepage. After a bit of research, I decided to get the M1, 16GB ram version. I bought a Dell 27" monitor, speakers and USB hub. I already have a perfectly working magic keyboard and mouse. So in total, I saved a whole bunch of $$.

    - Samsung 32" UHD Monitor
    - Magic Keyboard and Trackpad
    - Logitech 1080p Webcam
...for £1229 ($1739) in total. And yet the same spec iMac (with a smaller 24" screen) would come to £1649 ($2333) without even considering FCP, Motion etc as separate purchases. If you play it smart and get all the components seperatley like I did, then you can save hundreds and still have a larger screen to use. Part of the value of the mini is that, unless it's your first computer, you are quite likely to already have some of the things already. I already had two 1440p monitors so I just needed to buy one cable and another keyboard. I've plugged my midi controller in, it just worked, I plugged my external DAC/Headphone amp in, and it just worked as did my USB speakers and my USB capture card. • @BlueDroneBlues

I started with the Blue which seems to be the main default iMac system with 256gigs of SSD on a trail bases. I have since last year, The iPhone 13 Pro Max, Apple Watch 7 and the iPad Pro 5th Generation and of course some Air Pod Pro's which are freaking great!
I really fell in love with the iMac and the Mac OS is all new to me, except what I get on my iPad Pro and iPhone 13. I have been a PC user for decades and loving how all these Apple devices just seemingly connect to one another and how you can so easily transfer files and pictures around, (I haven't learned split screen yet, but I will.) My Apple Watch lets unlocks my iMac when I am close to it, which I know you guys know this, but it is so freaking cool to me. Never seen that before.
Since, my move into the iMac 24" I did make the choice of at least getting 512gigs of storage and I have a green iMac on the way. I decided not to get the 16gigs, not because I don't want it, I just don't want to wait almost 3 freaking months to get it. Which is a bit ridiculous to me. Just wish Apple made it where we could just purchase separately from them if need be and get the upgrades we want without waiting 3 months or less to have them install it for us. (Seems were back in the stone age of Apple here, When you want to update your PC you just buy the parts you need and you are golden. With an Apple when you want to upgrade you just take it, throw it away and go buy another one scenario.)
I was interested in the iMac Air, but the small screen is a real downer and with the new OS 16 around the corner I can use my iPad Pro as a reasonable Laptop and do what I need to do within reason on it. I don't have anything against the Mac Mini. The price is nice to say the least and I do have a 55" OLED tv I can run it though, but knowing I have to switch between watching a movie or playing on my PS5 all the time, plus having to either buy cheaper screens or different parts or even pay far more just to get say everything Apple I figured the iMac is a safe bet. Plus, I ran 2 split screens on my iMac had 2 separate webpages where one I can surf the other I was running UA-cam videos where I can have that play on my 55" OLED tv was insanely cool.
I really do like this package, I am loving the new keyboard with the touch id and the new mouse is pretty cool too. Of course, everyone has their own preferences. I have ordered a different iMac from Costco a Green iMac 24" with 512gigs of storage is on the way. I don't feel I need anymore than 512gigs plus I can just port to an external SSD or send to iCloud for storage and backup. Coming from the PC world it is truly sad I have to return this machine because I can't just buy what I need upgrade wise and install it myself. Which leaves returning it as my only option.

I would argue the difference is $800, because the Mac mini has virtually the same I/O as the $1499 model iMac, and the Mac mini has all them GPU cores of the $1499 model.
So for $800, you lose the option to upgrade to 10 gig ethernet, you add 7.5 lbs and some physical dimensions, and you lose support for one external display, but you gain:
-A fantastic, if on the small side, pixel dense but not high refresh rate, color accurate but not HDR, non-touch display which would probably sell for $800+ on its own, but you can't easily use it as a display other than for the computer built into the iMac. It's an Apple display, so it has ambient light sensors for brightness and True Tone, and you can also control the brightness with the function keys on your Apple keyboard. Niiiice. It's a display that will look good almost all the time, basically in anything other than complete darkness or direct sunlight. Obviously, you should only buy this computer over the Mac mini if you plan to use its built-in display as your primary. But you absolutely can, provided you need neither HDR nor high refresh rate. On the display I have plugged into my Mac mini, I have a much larger canvas, mediocre HDR (HDaRn't), 120 Hz, but lower pixel density, no support for brightness adjustments using Apple keyboards but three dedicated "profile" buttons for brightness and color profiles which I use instead (not as good), no Night Shift or True Tone (but again, those color profiles go some of the way there), the ability to use my monitor as two monitors, either for side-by-side Mac mini screens which are exactly color and refresh-rate matched but somehow one lags a bit behind the other?! Or I can use a portion of the display for another computer. I'm a dual user of Mac and PC, and this comes in handy frequently. Overall, I'd keep my current display, but this display cost me $1,000 and is still worth $900, and the features I use are subjective, while pretty much anyone would benefit from the QoL features of the iMac display. I had my display before I bought the Mac mini, and I bought the Mac mini before the iMac was available.

      You also get:
-Great speakers, probably exceeding the quality of a $50 dedicated 2.1 speaker+subwoofer system while taking none of that additional space on your desk and requiring no additional wires or ports. Niiiice! Because I have two speakers and want good audio from both, I have a $129 Thunderbolt cable running from my Mac mini to a $500 audio interface which is then connected through analog to a $200 speaker system and another PC which can both be heard over the same speakers as my Mac mini, and also hear the Mac mini's sound output. This is handy for my extremely niche use case in the same way that a monitor capable of PBP (picture by picture) is handy. See above. I would not consider the iMac a downgrade from this over $800 setup ($900 with mic, $1900 with monitor) except for the inability to see or hear my gaming PC without latency.
-A webcam which is as good as you can expect, and is properly mounted for you. It doesn't really blend into the white bezels, but it's much nicer than a big camera clamped to the top of your display, and again, does not require ports or wires, but, as long as you're using the iMac, it doesn't have a user-accessible off switch. You can only cover it, or rely on M1 and MacOS to limit when your webcam is accessible.
-Studio microphones comparable to a $100 USB microphone without taking up the USB port, perfectly positioned to pick you up without you needing to put a microphone in your workspace. Very handy. I bought a $100 USB microphone along with my Mac mini because I didn't have anything else usable. But here, you can't unplug them and you can't really cover them either -- not easily. You need to rely on M1 and MacOS not to grant microphone access where and when you don't want it. This would be okay for me; I trust Apple here.
      -7 COLORS, hallelujah! Orange FTW.
-A color-matched Apple Magic Keyboard. Comfortable typing, tenkey for an addtional $30, Touch ID included, but no eject button. I actually use flash drives and the USB Superdrive regularly, so I'd notice the absence of an eject button. Brightness, volume and playback controls. Bluetooth or color-matched wired connection. The same functionality can be achieved with a Mac mini, minus Touch ID, but you don't get dem colors. If you have both a Mac mini and an iMac, you can order a "replacement" keyboard matching the color of your iMac through AppleCare and get Touch ID on your Mac mini, which is funny. I personally use the Space Gray Magic Keyboard with tenkey, which cost me $150 and includes an eject button but does not include Touch ID, and which is no longer sold.
-A color-matched Apple Magic Trackpad for $50 more (which you should absolutely spend; the Magic Mouse is garbage. I have both in Space Gray, which cost me $248. The Trackpad was worth the $149. The mouse was not worth the $99).
So yes, that $800 yields Deep F'n Value. It doesn't make sense for my personal workflow at all, but I'm trying to get one for my dad so I have a machine I can throw in the car and take to DJ gigs. The problem is I need some way to get the display up much higher than it comes standard while being absolutely stable.

So in summary, get the iMac instead of the Mac mini unless you need 10 gig Ethernet or, like me, you need the other flexibility afforded by the Mac mini: to adapt to your existing, much more expensive setup. If you're like me, you should maybe get the iMac in addition to the Mac mini, provided there is someone else in your home who can borrow it sometimes. God, they're both such S-tier machines!
EDIT: oh, you heard the iMac under load? Can’t say I’m surprised, as Apple made more boastful claims about the silence of the Mac mini, but that’s really hard for me to swallow. I expect my computers to be silent all the time, and since my PC isn’t silent while gaming, I’m working on switching out the GPU to one which is. Now I’m not so sure I could use the iMac as my primary. Though for sure it would still be an exceptional DJ machine!

Most people don't think about it but the real value of the iMac is it has the cheapest professional grade display you can "bundle" with any computer. If you don't believe me, google the prices of 4k IPS displays with 100% Adobe RGB compliance. I would rate the iMac retina display over nearly all of them. This is invaluable for any digital content creator.

Well, the screen on the iMac is worth more than the difference in price. The only alternative that gives you the same quality, without scaling issues, is the Studio Display. Which cost as much the entire iMac package. The only advantage of the Mac Mini is flexibility. But then you sacrifice display quality and a super clean and gorgeous minimal setup. The iMac is a design statement in itself. Something you would be proud showing off even in your main living room.

That said, it should be possible to get a 4k monitor for around that price, and bigger too since 27" is a much more common size for 4k monitors. Quality won't be as good as Apple though.

The Samsung monitor was a 1440p monitor not 4K. 1440p is 4 million pixels. 4K or 3840x2160 is 8 million pixels, iMac is even higher than that. The iMac screen has P3 color which puts sRGB to shame. IMac has basically the best screen for a desktop period. 24 inches is big enough for most work flows. Apple saving the 27inch for later.

iMac's screen is too small for today's creative work and the base $1300 model goes up another $50-$70 for ethernet or dongles and a hub for the extra ports you'd need. You get a $50 discount if you want a trackpad, but it's still extra.
Buying a Mac Mini I (in theory), had another $700 to spend on more screen real estate, keyboard with backlight, Blue mic with boom, trackpad, monitor arms, hubs and wires. I use a used iPhone with the Irun app for a 1080 cam.
The Mini comes with nothing but a power cord but it's the same with the iMac, and neither has enough ports for extra stuff, so you still have to price in a little extra for hubs/adaptors/wires either way.

I have to disagree with your price matching examples because the point of the Mini is to get people into the Apple ecosystem and as someone who tried it out, I already had a monitor, keyboard and mouse along with the speakers so it was a simple $700 buy in, not $1300. Its even cheaper with a refurb model at $589. MacMin
    - Only the computer
    iMac
    - Similar computer
    - High-res screen
    - Keyboard and mouse
Basically you pay $700 or $900 for the “computer”.
Then on the iMac the $1300 or $1700, the “extras” go for $600 or $800.
Keyboard is $100-130, mouse another $100 (given useless :)). Hence you pay roughly $400-500 for the display.
Really the only waste of money on the iMac is the mouse.

I find that point a bit ironic since Apple clearly is marketing this for the "average" consumer but with pro features like P3 color accuracy that most wont know about. I have the mini with the cheapest 4k monitor 28" I could find at the time from BB (@$320) and don't use it for editing so for me it makes no difference that extra .5k or P3 color accuracy and I doubt it would for an average user, they would be better of with a mini over the imac in that sense. The monitor I have (Samsung UR55) still packs in useful features like an IPS panel(like the iMac) for different viewing angles and even has HDR support witch the iMac lacks and the screen is matte ( again something that isn't even an option on imac) as well the monitor is nearly bezel-less on three sides, with a miniscule chin.
Taking the screen aside and just focusing on raw features or ports, its clear the mac mini is just a better value, you could take the money saved and get a hub underneath for front facing ports, like microSD cardslot and a internal housing for SSD for expandable storage down the line that's more affordable then Apple's own Flash SSD. Not to mention the mini still packs in ethernet at no extra charge no matter what model you get.

The display sucks. It is too tiny (it is 23,5 inch, way smaller than previous 24 inch iMacs) and the insane resolution is a downside, not a plus. It kills the GPU without offering much extra work space (it is basically a 1260x2240 display). Give me a matte 2560x1440 27 inch any time. Or 4K at 32 inch.

I only occasionally do video calls with family and I do have a BlueAir purifier to clean the air of dust so it is good to know if I ever do use it the noise will be reduced.
Why pay twice as much? You pretty much covered it. You have to pay twice as much anyway to get a screen, all the accessories, sound, and they might not be as good, and won't be an all-in-one product with a 4.5k Retina screen in such a thin 23.5-inch package.

I think the important point about pricing is, if someone doesn't care about display quality being top notch, or having a very nice webcam, you can save money with the Mini.
The issue is, the closest thing to the iMacs display, is the $700 LG Ultrafine, plus to get the same look of webcam, youd probably be looking at an Logi C920 or Brio. Speakers like you said $100. Bringing the total WAY above the iMac.
Port selection is nice for sure, but the iMac is basically the Mac Mini, without the hdmi (dont need it), ethernet (in the brick), or USB 2.0 ports (bummer) on device. In this case, matching the two equally, you'd SAVE ~$350 by going with the iMac
I really think it all comes down to the persons work flow, and how much quality they want out of their peripherals.
