I’m on a caloric deficit as well, but I don’t go cold turkey on sweets. I eat a very small amount or at least 1 serving to satisfy the craving. Pair that with exercising and a high protein intake and you lose fat and gain muscle.
Be careful on the protein intake, as you will undergo gluconeogenesis if you eat too much meat, your body will learn to use muscle for energy instead and if you don't exercise on a regular basis, you will quickly lose the same muscles you gained. Reducing calories will not matter if you start to suffer from nutrient deficiency. Lastly, building and maintaining muscle density is a natural way to speed up basal metabolism, simply maintaining a decent amount of muscle while maintaining the same amount of food you typically eat will be enough to cause weight loss. Calories from sugar without fiber will spike up insulin levels. High Insulin levels for a long period of time, makes diseases caused by having a high body mass index (high% of body mass being fat cells) a lot worse including diabetes and fatty liver damage. A major reason is that insulin inhibits the ability for liver enzymes to break down fat cells. As long as you are not nutrient deficient, your liver will know the correct amount of glycogen in your fat cells to break down to glucose, and you will start to no longer feel hunger once the liver enzymes kicks in. You can be overweight but still healthy if you maintain a low insulin level and have enough nutrients.
