As a 52 year old student pilot. This video just showed me my retirement future. This is exactly what i want to do the rest of my life. Thanks for making it.
Incredible Video! That Waiex has been across the states and the video showing it all is amazing! Thank you for sharing! I am hoping to build a Sonex/Waiex starting in the near future... This gave me something to look forward to. Thank you for sharing! Cheers!
This was a nicely done video along with some good soothing music to further enjoy the beautiful scenery. I really got sucked in at the beginning of the video with that closeup of your pre-flight checklist items. I could feel the buildup of anticipation within me and I almost felt like I was there. Hey, thanks for the ride!
Thank you. I can't speak from experience but if you have the "lowered seat mod" you can likely still fit. Try to find a local flyer to take a trial fit.
how does your butterfly tail work? is the elevator/rudder mixer connected to your rudder down below? or do you control the v-tail with your stick at the same time?
There are pushrods that activate the elevator inputs via the stick and are mixed with cable operated rudder inputs via conventional pedals. The mixer is located about 2/3 of the way aft in the empennage.
Amazing video! Thank you for posting this! I was wondering if anyone knows if using a plane like this (or the Onex) is a practical means of traveling long distances regularly (like twice a month on clear days/daytime only). For example, if I lived in NV and wanted to fly regularly to CA, could that be done? I know it technically can; but that doesn't mean it's feasible. MojoGrip's YT channel claims that a Sonex can go for 24k used and according to the company's website, it can achieve 155 mph TAS @ 44.25 mpg and a range of 535 miles. Putting aside the 5k needed for a pilot's license, does it make more sense to fly yourself than buy a plane ticket?
Weather is the key. My Waiex has been quite reliable and could be used for such a trip as described. I'd much rather be in my airplane going 150 mph than with the masses at 500 mph. I can serve myself a drink!
If you factor in the true cost per hour of use or per mile traveled, it is not a cost effective alternative. Check on the rental rate for a plane in your location wet and you can soon begin to understand the true cost of ownership. Rental expenses are when you want to do them, but ownership eats while you sleep. Another factor, is 'get there-itis' using a LSA to commute is prone to canceling often for weather.
Sonex ownership should be much less than typical rental- and you don’t have the flight school breathing down your neck to get the plane back at a certain time.
I'm about 5'10". I'd say 6'2" might be near the limit before the canopy might be an issue. Seat thickness can be adjusted too. I'd find one to try on for size.
If I did it over again, I would install the latest Jabiru 3300 in a Waiex. My airplane is just too practical. I'd rather put the money saved over an RV into second airplane because one airplane does not do it all.
What engine do you have? Curious that it doesnt take mogas...? And is your plane IFR certified? Looks like it is, but unsure what radios you have installed. BTW, this is an awesome video!
Thanks. It's a Jabiru 3300. 100LL is the best fuel for a number of reasons. VFR only. IFR equipment would be heavy and expensive for a 700 lb. sportplane.
Just had my first two leasons on tailwheel.....mad respect to all tailwheel pilots.....those were some nice landings.
Thanks for stopping by and all the best on your tailwheel journey.

You're welcome. Good luck on your adventures.
What a great compilation of the travels and true exhibition of the freedoms our country provides. Thanks for sharing, I truly enjoyed it 👍😎
Yes, how lucky we are! I'm glad you liked it. The intent is to motivate people as I was motivated from others.
Nicely done - just watched this for the first time. Was too busy for 9 years building and lately just been flying.
I'm glad you finally found it. I enjoy watching your adventures as well.
Great video and very nice craft! I'm thinking one of these might be my next plane if I can swing it! thx for sharing.
Wow. Thanks for sharing your travels, the initial walk around the beautiful Waiex. Cheers. I am hoping to start a B model Sonex soon!
Gool luck with your project. These are great airplanes.

Hey, thanks for the ride!
I'm happy to hear that you liked it.
Great video Kip! Just the motivation I needed to get back to the shop to finish YX63. Blue skies!
That's what I like to hear. Keep going and you'll get there!
Very interesting and well done video. Thanks for sharing your adventures.
Happy to hear that you liked it.
Thanx for putting more gas in my tank....working on Waiex 0157 now....cant wait to get in air!
That's what I like to hear!
Nice one Kip. Good job on editing a lot of work there.
Love the Kolb also.
Great Video Kip! I enjoyed every minute, Thanks for the ride
Beautiful paint job on ur plane white wing tip strips or white stars not to big would set it off love in it 👍
Absolutely fabulous video. I sold my Sonex a few years ago. This makes me wish I had kept it.
Oh that's livin the dream man !!! beautiful shots
I appreciate it.
Awesome video . Thank you for sharing
Glad to hear you liked it.
Just purchasing an AeroVee-powered Sonex, and so wishing it had the Jabiru!
There really is a big difference between the two engines!
Excellent video! Many thanks.
Another good airplane video with azole music !
Really nice. Great shots!
Thanks!
Very enjoyable video. Before I get anymore excited over the Waiex can anyone tell me if a guy 6"-3" would fit in one? Thanks~
Thank you. I can't speak from experience but if you have the "lowered seat mod" you can likely still fit. Try to find a local flyer to take a trial fit.
@@kyqxthanks I’m near Modesto California if anyone reading this can help.
Huge trip and nice plane but not so easy to find in France even as a used ready to fly aircraft.
yee haaa love that shot buzzing the hills in mt
Very funny AR. Nice plane.
How comfortable is the plane for cross country flights? How is it with 2 people?
"I've been everywheeeere.."
Now Alaska and Hawaii!
👍 for that parking in the hangar 😎🌈
Pena q não voe longas distâncias ...aqui na Amazônia não se tem muitos aeroportos ,e isso exige aviões q percorram longas distâncias...
An amazing aircraft. What's the fuel economy at cruise speed? 16 gallons capacity right?
I run about 140 mph which is an "economy cruise" resulting in a 5.2 gallon per hour fuel burn at cruise altitudes of 6000-8000 feet.
@@kyqx Thank you for your answer :) I wuold like to get one too. What engine do you have?
@@thomaskung1865 I have a Jabiru 3300 in it. Great, practical airplane!
Awesome!!

Drop the mike! Awesome video. Do you mind if I grab a screen shot for the newsletter?
Of course, Jim! It's no "Hicke Production" but I tried!
Was that low flight over the ledge really in New Mexico? I thought that was after we overnighted in Vegas... Awesome video though. Lots of memories.
Where in Georgia? I will be VLD area!
Is that a Kolb in the hanger at rhe beginning?
A Firestar II.
Amazing video! Thank you for posting this!

Does the plane sound like a harley or a buzz saw ?
Neither of those thankfully. It's more like a P-51.
@@kyqx 😀 😄 😆 😅 🤣 🤔
Nice Toys.
Great tour.
Have you been to Massachusetts and which airport did you land at?
Thanks. My MA stop was Fitchburg (KFIT).
How tall are you? Looks like the lowered seat, any issues hitting your head or a tall guy hitting their head?
I'm about 5'10". I'd say 6'2" might be near the limit before the canopy might be an issue. Seat thickness can be adjusted too. I'd find one to try on for size.
Looks nice, thinking to build a Waiex turbo. if you were to do it all over, would you still do this vs. something like an RV?
If I did it over again, I would install the latest Jabiru 3300 in a Waiex. My airplane is just too practical. I'd rather put the money saved over an RV into second airplane because one airplane does not do it all.
I really like the color! Do you have the color code still?
Not exactly. It's been lost over time. I do know it's a PPG Ford Mustang Orange. I'm not certain of the year.
Love it

The Y tail width is about 2.24 meters.

Which engine and how do you like it?
Jabiru 3300 and I've been very happy with it. I would not put any other engine in one.
at the sun n fun part, why land on a taxiway?
Taxiways are used to handle the increase in traffic during the event.
Great!!
Nice tail #
cant wait to see they highwing of this irl
Ditto on "nicely done and a lot of work".. never mind the build. Next time you should take a bow instead of walk off camera! ;-)
