'Non Parity' Dice...

    A simple dice - or die if you prefer. Six sides, each containing one of the numbers from 1 to 6. And opposite sides must add up to 7. So the 6 is opposite the 1, the 5 opposite the 2 and the 4 is opposite the 3. And that is it. Isn't it. Isn't it?
    Well no. Not quite. There is one more thing to consider.
    Starting with 6 blank sides, there is only one way to add - let us say - the 1 and the 6. And there is only one way to then add the 5 and the 2. If a thousand different people did this, they would all end up with a dice that was the same, albeit with two blank sides.
    BUT...
    When we add the two last numbers, the 4 and the 3, there are options. Two options in fact.
    Let us assume that the 1 is at the top, which means the 6 is at the bottom. Assume that we have put the 2 on the left hand face and the 5 on the right hand face. You now have a choice as to whether you place the 4 on the front face and the 3 on the back face, or whether you do it the other way around, with the 3 on the front face and the 4 on the back.
    Does it make a difference? Well, if you are just rolling a couple of dice to see what numbers come up, then no, it shouldn't make any different. But the two versions of the dice are like your hands - identical but mirror images. In organic chemistry, there are molecules that have the exact same formula, but are mirror images of each other. They are called Optical Isomers. Tim shows exactly how they differ in the video.
    As Tim says, magicians can make use of dice like these. Maybe you can think of some tricks you could play with a set of non parity dice?

    I can actually answer this! I’ve been collecting dice for a long time. The reason why they’re different is because there’s such a thing as right-handed dice and left-handed dice. If you were looking at a corner where only the 1, 2, and 3 sides are visible, if they go from smallest to largest in a counterclockwise direction, they’re right handed. Likewise, if they go smallest to largest in a clockwise direction, they’re left handed. It has nothing to do with the hand you throw from, just the orientation of the numbers. And because opposing sides of a die will always equal 7, a die being left or right handed will change the underside as well, if you could call it that

      A website called Dice-Play states this: "Today Western dice all have the same face arrangement. If the 1-spot is face up and the 2-spot is turned to face the left then the 3-spot is to the right of it. Chinese dice will have the faces the opposite way round. Japanese dice are arranged like Western dice but like other Asian dice they will have a very large and deep 1-spot painted red. Chinese and Korean dice will have a red 4-spot as well as the 1."

    The mathematician John Conway went further. Suppose you have a die with standard parity. There are two ways that each of the faces 2, 3, and 6 can be oriented. Call the vertex at which the faces 2, 3, and 6 all meet the "home" vertex. On a standard die, if you connect the dots on the 2, they point toward the home vertex; ditto if you connect the dots on the 3. Moreover, if you draw a diagonal on the 6 to make an N or a Z shape, that diagonal will point toward the home vertex. But in theory, each of these three diagonals, instead of pointing in the standard ("homeward") direction, could point in the other ("wayward") direction. All told, there are 8 different flavors of waywardness (including the standard configuration). Conway claimed to have collected examples of all 8 flavors.
