To win any Derby eased down, patted on the neck is impressive, but by a record 10 lengths is Incredible ❤

He may not have the greatest racehorse but he was certainly the greatest Derby winner. However the Irish commentary is far better than this but it has been removed and I don't know why.

Who would kidnapp a Horse?!! No Animal should have got caught up in the troubles. I hate the IRA and I hope all the members burn in hell for what they did. Shergar was the greatest Horse ever. And it makes me very upset that he is probably buried in a bog somewhere. He should have had a proper grave. And no one will say where he is buried. And someone does know I bet. He may have been a race Horse and worth millions. But he was still an Animal who deserved better, than what he got. I can't believe the security and Ballymany stud was none existent. A Horse worth so much money should have been better taken care off. Poor Shergar really deserved better. There will never be a Horse like him ever!

Shergar was a very good horse, but not in anyone's wildest imagination could he be considered the greatest. He won the Derby by a record distance, but let's put things in perspective. Shergar's Derby was undoubtedly a weak race, it is universally regarded as one of the poorest fields ever assembled for the race and, Shergar apart, there was very little of any quality in the field. The IRA, and it makes me seethe with hate to mention the scum, deprived the racing world of a magnificent stallion.

Unfortunately not. He was taken too early to for him to have been given a chance as a Stallion sadly.

I'd strongly disagree with you, in that, he was the greatest of his time. He won his first professional race by I think either 10 or 12 lengths, considering he was only two years of age then. He went on to win (by great lengths) the following 3 races. But these races were won by such ease that this is what made him great. Aga Khan knew his best option was for him to retire him otherwise some other horse would do better, so the best option financially was to let him retire, for him, and the horse

I was there that day with a friend who's no longer with us, I was fifteen and he was a year older.
We got the train to tattenham corner and walked to the main stand getting accosted by lucky heather ladies as we went.
I backed glint of gold at 10/1 but remember when shergar burst clear everyone in the stand stood in awe and clapped, a take your breath away moment.
Still sends shivers down my back when I see this.
      Thanks

Should be renamed the Derby handicap of 1981 because it really was a bad bunch of 3 year olds that year, the winner was a good horse but not a great one, he got beat in the Leger and never made the Arc. All time great horses win the Arc along with other top races before that, for example Sea the Stars, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave in

Yeah, he got beaten in the St Leger by three year olds he had previously pulverised, because something obviously wasn't right with him, plus he might not have actually stayed the 14 furlongs even if he had been right? He was a very good horse without any doubt.

@@nightowl7459 certainly he was a good horse over 1m 4f, he could never have won a guineas, he got tapped for speed by Beldale Flutter in the futurity at two, he had a high cruising speed obviously which won him his races but apparently the Champion Hurdle was run faster than his Derby that year 😂😂 i often wonder how Storm Bird would have performed that year but politics and money got in his way 😔😔

@@tonymcgrath700 The Derby that year was ran on soft ground, I'm more than aware it wasn't a high quality Derby, but he was a high quality Derby winner, he went on to win the Irish Derby hard held and the King George very comfortably, the fact that he wasn't a Guineas winner is pretty meaningless, I quite like Sea The Stars, but I still think Shergar would have beaten him if they had bought contested in the same Derby.
