Amazing to watch Willie Shoemaker ride Hawaiian Sound to mke most of the running and almost win the 1978 Derby.
Shergar trainer's one and only pre-race instructions to jockey 'make sure you don't get blocked in!' That was the only way he could have plausibly lost....
Superb Shergar, Invisible Lammtarra , both were ridden by Walter Swinbirn.

Sea The Stars was the greatest horse ive ever seen.Won the 2000 guineas,The Derby and the Arc De Triomphe all in the same season.No other horse has ever done that.

After watching the Chester vase Richard Baerlin told his readers to back Shergar using the slightly politically incorrect phrase “Bet like men”. He also called his house “Shergar” because the money that he made from backing him paid for it.

TBF, this is one of the worst lists you'll see. For instance the 70s produced a slew of great Derby winners; Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Grundy, Troy. Even perhaps The Minstrel. And yet the only winner from the decade chosen is the comparatively prosaic Shirley Heights.

Maybe this is something like MTB showed stunning performance in derby only.
Why didn't they just call this video random Derby winners? Because that's exactly what it is, Sherley Heights but no Troy who spectacularly won the race a year later.

@@Dwayndibb It could be, I just wonder if there's any dark horse out there? Last year's winner was a bit under the radar this time last year, (should be interesting to see what Desert Crown can achieve as a four year old) O'Brien seems to have a lot with potential for middle distances, although nothing out standing just yet.

My top 10 would include Mill Reef,Golden Fleece,Nashwan and Nijinsky who in my opinion is the greatest of all time but its tough to argue with Shergar at #1

The best three 12 furlong horses in my opinion would be Ribot, Sea Bird11 and Sea The Stars.
@@markhiggins8315 My soft spot would be for Troy. Mainly because of the run he unleashed from nowhere to win it, and the fact that I had been allowed to put 50p to win on him. 3 pounds was more money than I had ever had in my life.
If anyone can find the video with the BBC Peter O'Sullivan commentary please point me to it. It really is one of my fondest childhood memories. My brother had been teasing me because Troy was at the back for most of the race.
Just thinking about that, "Willie Carson storms to the front on Troy..." still brings tears to my eyes.
@@TheToledoTrumpton I'm old enough to remember the famous Carson drive as Troy stormed home. Thanks for reminding me of one of one of the great racing sights from all those years ago.
I have similar memories of successful bets from childhood as I was lucky enough to have had a father that would take me with him round the different race courses.
SEA the STARS------MILL REEF the best NATURAL horse-DERBY WINNERS.
Shame Nijinsky's win was not on this list.
Apart from Sea the Stars, Shergar and Galileo. I wouldn't include any of the others as among the top 10 through the years. No mention of Sea Bird II, Nijinsky, Golden Fleece or Sir Ivor who were much better Derby winners than the likes of Oath, Shirley Heights or Pour Moi.

Workforce was a brilliant derby winner he was seen at his very best that day and remember he also won the ARC.

World Horse Racing. Why oh why don't you ever look at horses from the 30s, 40s plus 50s and 60s. Hyperion stood just over 15 hands.

Absolutely agree. Sea-Bird ran on the bridle for all of the race save 100 yards in the last furlong. Just cruised to victory effortlessly.
Sea Bird was, in my opinion ,the greatest racehorse of the last 60 years. I've never seen anything to compare with him.

Slow pace makes it much harder for a horse to quicken away from others.
