My spoon is really nice! Thank you very much Andy. I love the three distinct colors on the mouth of the spoon.
Hey Tristan! Thanks for the comment and it's great to hear you're enjoying the spoon. Awesome you showed up in the comments!
Love this idea. My son and I are arborist and when we remove trees for a client I will take a log home and turn a bowl for them. I never let the client know until i have finished the bowl. It’s a nice surprise for them and it lets me hone my craft.
Andy, that was a cool video.
I'm a claims adjuster, retired from a major carrier. Back during hurricane Ike we handled a claim for a Galveston artist. She surprised us with hand made crosses made from the splintered wood debris of devastated homes. She made a few hundred to make sure every member of our team received one as a thank you for our service. That simple cross is a reminder that beauty can come from disaster. I can send you a picture if you'd like to see it.
Thanks for giving back to your community. Appreciate all your time and efforts into your work and videos. A quick gift from roadside wood are wind chimes. You’d be surprised how peaceful sounding all wooden chimes are. Good luck.
Now that I’ve grown older and less bendable an item I found extremely useful is a long shoehorn. Unusual, distinctive, useful and simple to make. Letter openers also fall in that category.
Andy, you have a great idea, run with it! Also, really enjoy your UA-cam channel.
1st time viewer, I really think this was a cool idea! Great community builder and you even opened the door or some more wood! Win win! I love it!
Howdy Andy, Texas Maker here too, I'm doing something similar but I'm using up most of my own tree scraps. Might try, bandsaw boxes, wall mounted key chain/leash holders. This month I used some Sycamore and just milled up some small blanks out of Redbud.
Love this Andy! One idea could be turning tiny dishes/vases/decorative items on your lathe too? Might be a quicker turnaround to process? Anyways, Love this series, truly inspirational!
Love the idea. Giving back you're community is awesome. Keep up the good work!
What a great idea! A few years ago I drove by a house in my town that had an oak dresser sitting out for the trash. I stopped and grabbed a few of the drawers. I like to make small wooden boxes using a box joint jig I made for my router table. I busted up the drawers and ran the material through my surface planer and made a few boxes out of them. I lined the insides of them with some Gerstner felt that I had left over from another project. I would not be able to find the house that had this stuff sitting out for garbage if my life depended on it. If I did, I would drive over there this very minute and give them a box I made from their junk. From now on, I'll be looking for opportunities like this and will make sure I know the address of the place it came from. Again what a fun idea!
I love this video, i have done the same thing with a few of my neighbors. They were trimming trees and i asked for a branch or two. Few days later I give them soming i made from their yard waist. I made my favorite project, a vase and flowers on the laith (lilac, and apple woods), and a butter knife (cherry).
There used to be a show called Junk Brothers, that took cast off furniture from the front of people's houses and remade it and brought it back to them, I liked it!
I have made a bunch of spoons and spatulas using a combination of hand work, bandsaw, and stationary belt sander for shaping. I tend to go for the funky pieces of wood. Try to find a curve or elbow and bandsaw out a few 1/2" layers for spatulas. I always try to follow what the grain suggests and end up with irregular shapes. On purpose... Great idea.
I love this. Super cool idea, and a great way to get to know some folks in your community. I think kitchen items are your best bet, if you want to give something to people that they will get good use out of. Maybe a cutting board. You’d have to add extra time for glue to dry but maybe return the next day. Or live edge. I’ve done matching pairs of spoons and spatulas out of the same piece of wood as well. Great content brother.
That might end up being a cupping board though 😂
What's up Dustin! Thanks for watching gate video and for the suggestions. Yeah, I'm trying to do something quick but if we have to glue up that's ok. Maybe I should make a killer bow and arrow for some random person!!!
Very cool idea. BBC did a similar thing where they stopped stuff going to the dump, renovated/updated it, and then sold it giving the profits to the original owner. I like your idea better. Trees need trimming, but so much wasted/missed opportunity goes to dump
Absolutely A+ I love the idea and concept. Wooden cup! doesn't need to be fancy, I like the rough cut look but if somebody came to me and said here is your trash, I made you a cup. I would use that thing on a daily!
Spoons, spatulas, turned bowls or vases, salad tongs/forks. People like getting these types of things as gifts and most can be made with few tools and rather quickly.
Loving the new content; a coffee scoop, something someone can use and pass down. I made a candle holder for my grandma when I was 16, when she passed it was given back to me along with many memories. I made it out of wood that my grandpa had thrown in the burn bucket. What a great heart you have Andy.
It’s almost as though all the techniques required to be a good woodworker come into play in carving a common spoon. You really got to master the grain’s direction.
Very cool concept. I think small boxes would always be a huge hit. Coasters, letter opener, small trays for keys or something. Loved the video! Great work as usual!
This was great! I like using wooden spoons and it got me thinking, I'll have to try one from some wood from my Elm tree! Wish I had some of those great shaving tools... however, bandsaw and die grinder will have to work! As for ideas, a tweezer like tool for taking toast/bagels out of oven or toaster, or various spatulas
I love this! You’ve got a servant heart, can’t wait to see more of these types of videos!
Birds of a feather my friend, you must have a servants heart also as did our Lord Jesus.
Love what you did. Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) is exactly what our society needs now. Future project could be router trays, valets, cat hall trays, etc. you should be able to mill from those sized branches, a quick template then rout with a bowl bit, light sand and good to go. Should take about the same amount of time.
I like such a lovely small wooden projects :) I sometimes make spoons or other little stuff out of wood and give to people too. Thank you for this video!
Wow! What an amazing idea. That is brilliant. I love that you are giving it back to the person. The toaster tweezer idea from Glen Carter is perfect. My Dad was a woodworker and I still have and use the one that he made me. Toys for kids would be great too. Barbie Doll sized furniture or an airplane. Maybe that will inspire someone to get into woodworking.
Love the idea! My next project is a set or kitchen utensils so spatulas, spoons, coffee scoops, etc are all small and will be a fun project.
very cool idea, you could always take small wooden furniture, or boxes or whatever and change them with some carving. bigger pieces would take too long but smaller pieces would not
I do that also and it’s all my pleasure to see the reaction from people. I have done small bowls and large bowls but that is time consuming! Charcuterie boards go pretty quickly.
So amazing what you can do! I was thinking of bowls. Any size that fits your wood. Love this new thing you are doing!
"pecan's a beautiful wood!" best line 😂
You can do some lathe bowls.
I watched the Keith Rucker video of your vise repair. Keith said you were his friend. I wanted to meet Keith's friend and see the guy that broke that vise. I then discovered that you paid a thousand dollars for that vise. Then I watched the heartbreaking video of the broken vise. Then I watched this video. Now I can easily see why you are Keith's friend. You are an awesome dude and I am honored to subscribe to your awesome channel.
A happy subscriber today.

Thanks for coming over and for the kind words! I hope you enjoy the content
Love the concept. My favorite projects are giving trash a new life. One idea might be to do the work at the back of your truck on site.
Caught you over at BM, having remodeled an RV and lived in one for ten years, you peaked my interest. I play around with using tree scraps, milling it best I can with often charmingly crude results then making things, just trinket boxes mostly. I just give them away to whoever family, friend, neighbor. Anyway, I'm over in Montgomery County, Cut and Shoot area, and you got my subscription.
Awesome idea! I’m definitely going to do it in my town! A quick and easy idea would be tea light holders
That was a great idea for a project. The spoon turned out really nice. Coffee scoops would be good for that, too. I've made a few for family. I rough it out on the babdsaw. Then I make the hole with a forstner bit, and finish shaping it with hand tools. Mostly rasps and files. I sand entire the top down until it holds exactly ⅛ cup. I use sand to check the measurement. I think I might make a jig to use a trim router to make the hole in the future, instead of the forstner bit, so I won't have that little divot in the bottom. I made my wife and daughter each one from spalted box elder that grew in our backyard. My mom's was from some walnut that came from the farm she and my step dad had for about 20 years.
Really cool idea! Please more of this ;)
Saw the video of Keith Rucker repairing the broken band saw parts for you. Sure glad he was able to help solve the problem. Love the idea. I did something like that a few years back but I turned a bowl so it took longer than an hour or so. You might turn a small plate. Coasters but not sure how well they would do green.
Sharing kindness is always good, you got my subscription.
Andy
I’m a member of WestTexasWoodworkers in Levelland Texas and every year we have a wood working challenge. One of the members ask me when we was discussing this years challenge. Why don’t we make something we can donate or give back to the public. With your permission I would like to take your idea and use it for next year’s challenge. Your welcome to join next year’s challenge is you wish.
Thank you for giving back!!
Yes sir, you're welcome to use it!
A set of coasters would be an easy thing. Can always bandsaw them apart and put contrasting species or sapwood inside of the heartwood.
I like the idea very much. It's really nice how you surprise and appreciate people with it. That's how you love your neighbor!
I am already looking forward to more such actions.
By the way, a very nice spoon.
God bless you!
Cool idea! How about a hand carved length of wooden chain, a yo-yo, shoe horn, back scratcher, comb, spurtle, or handle for a small mirror. ⭐️
Thanks great suggestions!
Very cool idea. I would vote for a small turned bud vase for dry flowers.
Really nice spoon, Andy. A great concept, too. Interesting that just this morning I watched Andy Paramore (Andy's Cornish Creations n TY) carve a spoon. Your techniques were very different but both had great results. Maybe try a simple flower next time.
Bill
Awesome idea and a fantastic act of kindness. You made a spoon so the next one could be a butter knife.
loved it: How about a bowl, small through tenon step stool. I think the giving back part is priceless 😊
I like the step stool idea!
bowels and lidded boxes are always a big hit.
This is a wonderful idea. Maybe it will inspire someone to do something with their trash (wood). Off the top of my head, a clothes hanger? Heavy coat hanger? An interesting shaped one.
That is amazing! I think you could build a conection with the person if you talk to him/her before. And let them see the wood you are taking, so they will have a different perspective of your work.
You could also choose 3 tings you know you can do and give them the opportunity to pick between options a, b or c (for example), but without they knowing what are the options.
Great work.
Great ideas thanks!
I like this idea. I am actually hoping to get some wood from the school my kids attend. The floor in the gym was damaged when they got hit by a tornado last summer / fall. So I had the idea of making a few pens or something with the wood for a few key people in the community that stood out to me as they helped the whole community recover from this. Hopefully I can get some and depending on how much I will see how many I can make. Just my way of giving back too.
Great idea, but you might want to leave a business card or an advertising flyer with them so that when they want to have a piece of furniture made, they can contact you. Things you could make, miniature bowl, coaster for a drinking glass, back scratcher, tea cup hanger, a rest for a used tea bag, miniature baseball bat, tea light holder, spoon rest for the stove, candle holder, black holder, a hook to hang ones robe upon, etcetera.
Love this concept. Great community engagement.
What a great jesture Andy. Since the wood is wet and has never seen a kiln, I'd think of things you can bend. Some of the oaks that will bend well could be cut thin, steamed, wrapped on a form for a shaker box. Just a thought. Love the channel.
Suggestion: a catch-all bowl. Something to throw keys, change, etc in. I've no idea if this can be done quickly or how much scrap is needed but I always like having containers around the crib for my things.
Rolling pin, picture frame, candle holders, breadbox, house numbers, old style potato box. just a few ideas.
Swing up to Nebraska and grab a piece from my brush pile!! Great job, even better idea!
Amazing, Andy! Great attitude! 😃
Ideas? Hmmm... I think things to use at the kitchen are the best, really. Unless you know somehow that the family has kids, they there are some pretty nice and easy games you can make... Using dowels and stuff.
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
How about some cutting boards. I am new to Woodworking since I retired from the Army and it helps pass the time for me. Great channel. Thanks for your videos.
This is awesome, so wonderful to spread kindness. Love it. 💜
This is a great idea. Bookends can be quick and simple.
Wooden spoons are awesome. Might think of doing like a garden gnome or something if you want to carve, or maybe like a yard game like "yardzee" or if they have kids a toy.
Great video, you could maybe make a small box of multiple planks you cut out of logs, as you did at the beginning for the spoon; maybe a cutting board with a handle, a bowl, leg bowl or a long fruit bowl, depending on the shape of the piece of wood
9:23 Never seen anyone use a spokeshave like that. Cool!
What an awesome way to give back to the community. Could you do like a candle holder? Small and quick
Andy you make me smile the way youo use the hand tools. I watched you withthe draw knife particularly, from hoggin out the mass, and flipping it over for more fine controlled work. the spoke shave it brilliant to watch also. well done sir. form trash to treasure. Thanks for sharing your passion with us.
I have done a set of spoons and forks connected by a chain but that is a long process.
Small items like bowls, plates, etc.
Great idea, Andy! I'm going to try that myself, and hopefully others will, too!
Great content as always Andy!! As a turner I'd like to see you put some miles on that Oliver Lathe and turn a bowl. Cheers!
Using green wood limits you somewhat in the projects that you can make. You might look for desks, beds or other furniture that you can grab and give them back a small table, chair or bookcase. - Chris
Outstanding job. Excellent video.
Brilliant idea
I do it a lot, going through any brush or wood piles for making walking sticks or canes.
A set of coasters with a nice edge profile would be pretty cool
Made a spoon recently, and without your skill level I cheated - used the CNC to hollow out the bowl. Might save you some time if you have other things to work on while the CNC runs.
I love this idea! I've been working on my spoon-fu lately. Yours actually came out really nice! My next work is a spatula (out of some cherry I have hanging around). I tried making a fork.... but there's just no way to do the tines in wood. Seems like that's just asking a bit much out of a piece of wood (but I'd be happy to be proven wrong if you can do it!). Thanks for posting this, Andy!
I have carved forks and spoons connected by chain links out of one piece of wood.
Great idea and an idea that many of us can use.
Awesome video. Awesome concept. Awesome job!! Maybe a small 5x7 frame for photos would be a quick build
Love this type of content very nice work Andy!
What a nice idea and a beautiful spoon! Other suggestions? Maybe bird log nests, toys?
wow great job using hand tools I would love to get a spoon like this
Beautiful concept! Keep up the brood work.
Very cool! This is a great idea!
Love the video and new concept.
thats cool . keep it going.
Great concept. I am going to give it a try.
Love this idea!!
Hi Andy, It would be really cool if you had seen my last video and that gave you inspiration but, your, video, carving technique and concept of giving the item back makes my spoon pretty lame haha. I like the idea of a carved pipe, or jewelry like a small carved fish hook on a leather necklace. You could take my concept and do some pruning for your friend or neighbor and give them the item you carved from one of their plants.
That as really cool. Maybe a small bowl? Spatula?
Nice Scorping!
Very much like the concept
Cool concept!
Super cool man.. very nice spoon
Imagine the guy was like wow its nice but let me go put it back on the ground next to the brush
Nice work ! A mortar and pestle maybe ?
Very cool idea excited to see more videos like it👏
Not a carving project: But I think a cutting board would be really cool too.
Hey Andy! I dig the variety! Great content idea - keep it going…
Very cool idea
Andy i love this idea
