    Savannah is one of our favorite cities. The charming coastal town is set under a veil of Spanish moss and old architecture. Winter is also a quieter season, so Savannah's visitors can really get a glimpse of the city without the crowds, and the weather is relatively warm for winter. We're talking 60-70 degrees. Another interesting thing about the Spanish moss is that they were often used to stuff mattresses for beds. However, the moss often had chiggers, ticks, and other little bugs living in them, so people would often wake up with little bites all over their bodies. That's actually where the "sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite" saying came from.
    Another interesting fact is that Savannah has an underground tunnel system. Entrances are blocked off now, but when Yellow Fever came through the city, people would go underneath Savannah into the tunnels to live, thinking Yellow fever was spread through the air above.
    Another thing about Yellow Fever. Supposedly, Yellow Fever claimed so many lives in the city that the cemetery didn't have enough room to properly bury the bodies. Due to this, people just started burying bodies wherever they could, and sometimes that meant burying on top of other bodies or digging shallow graves. Now, its speculated that there are hundreds of bodies buried all throughout Savannah, including the streets. Supposedly, if you see a part of a street where the cobblestones are raised up or uneven and it's not caused by a tree root, than that's likely where a body was buried.
    I've grown up visiting Savannah a lot since I was born and raised in Georgia, but I never get tired of going and finding out that there's still so many things to learn about the city. I love learning about history, and Savannah has been one of my favorite historical places to visit, no matter how many times I go.

    Another little known and little shared in most tourist vids is that Savannah GA is 52.7% Black/African American (CENSUS.GOV) and most of the truly amazing history of blacks in Savannah is rarely spoken of in depth outside of a few African American historians in Savanah GA. who have supplied most of the facts of African American History in Savannah GA. Just doesn't encourage tourism to go into too much of THAT history. We won't even begin to unpack Tybee Island.

    • @TheDetourDuo
      @TheDetourDuo  4 місяці тому

      I totally agree, and as they should. A historian is going to go in depth. A tourism video covers the surface and leaves it up to the view to follow up with research if they are interested. If this were a research channel we would 100% go more in-depth, but it's a travel channel.

    I live in Cranham Essex where the founder of Georgia, James Oglethorpe, spent his final years
    It makes me extremely proud that he was very involved in the planning of such a beautiful city
    It is really strange that a man with such a history is virtually unknown in our local community although there is a primary school named after him named the James Oglethorpe primary school
    People in Savanah make contact with the school to form what could be a great association

    • @TheDetourDuo
      @TheDetourDuo  9 місяців тому

      I didn't know that about him and his final days. Very does seem like there isn't a lot of history about him. At least not talked about

    • @jcook2433
      @jcook2433 2 місяці тому

      Actually, those with generations of family from Savannah know a great deal about him but so many have left the area, disillusioned about the changes going on. The earliest days of Savannah began with just the houses along Bay and Squares were formed per the plan Oglethorpe laid out. He had a vision for this place. Some of the first houses still exist although , at least one was moved. The cannonball house. The cannon ball hit the house during the war for freedom from other countries.(Too much to tell here) The section of wall was saved by the family and is now on display. ( It is on loan by the original family.) 11 Generations or so later! Sadly, the family is so unhappy with the loss of so much history and the facts of their ancestors, only one still lives in the area. Many of the first people were indentured. The ones referred to here were not slaves but indentured. There is a difference. Anyway, back to Oglethorpe. The green spaces of the squares were for several reasons. Health, to keep some space to prevent the crowding of homes that proliferated in other countries and legend has it that some grazing area or place for animals. Many trees were later attempts to find useful things. Oglethorpe did not want or allow slavery. He had to leave the area and upon his leaving some things changed. If only his vision had been kept intact! I could go on and on about the history and can tell you where documents can be found to give further info but frankly speaking, it seems to be so unpopular since the later history was harsh, I prefer to stay out of it these days. There once was a board game called “ The Savannah Game” that was pretty neat. It was based on cool facts about Savannah. If you can find one today I believe you would enjoy it. I fervently hope to return one day but if all the great and historical places that have been bought up or are being leveled for Industry or other purposes continue, I will never go home except to “visit” and care for the ancient markers in the Colonial, Bonaventure and other burial grounds. A friend wrote some interesting books about the burial grounds. Look for those. Some sites of the earliest days are quietly visited. Some “ slave” burials are protected quietly from developers. I often took flowers to those as well. There was great respect by the first families there for all who worked together for survival. I wish that part of the history would be revived. It seems to have gotten lost in the current events. Sad that those earliest families would now have to retreat. They deserved to be remembered for the trials they endured in order to give you the city that so many generations have lived in, loved and enjoyed. Much was thrust upon them that they did not want. I guess history repeats. If you can shine light upon the good things then I am grateful. If you can help to preserve the history and beauty of ALL, even better. Do you know about the Green Meldrim house? At age 90 + my Grandmother gave tours there. Sherman stayed there when he came to Savannah. The Juliette Gordon Low ( Girl Scouts started by her) birthplace and home are there At one time it contained much of the original furniture and possessions. May be changed now but a book was done to document all that it once contained. I have heard that some historical buildings may be leveled soon near Forsyth park and there is a home elsewhere that belonged to a female artist that was in terrible condition but I hope beyond hope that it was saved or will be. She was amazing. So much is going away. It is suggested that no one wander certain areas at night so, be aware. This is not the place you visited two years ago. Hoping for changes to come in years ahead to save the original plan.
