End-of-week H/H match recap: ... Today's action: After winning $12,400, the reigning champion is defeated, and a new champion proceeds to the big money round. Today's audience match question: "_______ Tag" (I was a kid back then and we all played freeze tag!) The celebs: Richard (dog), Charles (baggage), and Brett (May-) The choice: Dog The answers: May, Price, Dog (My answer was a bust!) Now we'll see who our new champion chooses. Looking into my crystal ball, I see the initials "RD"... My crystal ball did not lie. Today's H/H question: "_______ the man" Hmm. All I can think of (that would be valid in 1976) is the TV show "Chico and the Man" (1974-1978). In fact, Jack Albertson from "Chico and the Man" sat in the first seat for episodes 471-475 (and even scored a H/H match), so I know Richard must have heard of the show! My other thought (not valid in 1976) is: "Portugal. The Man" (a rock band). I'm sure there was some expression back then too, something like "stick it to the man," but I'm not sure how widespread it was. Okay. Richard seems perplexed. He does his obligatory look left, his ear scratch, his head shake, his lip purse. He writes a fairly short answer and pauses to look towards Joyce again and to Arlene before filing his card. He doesn't look pleased with his answer. "Oh, that's the hardest one in three years," he mumbles as the camera focuses on Gene and the contestant. From her expression, the champion knows she has little chance of winning the five grand. "Shoot the man," she says. Well, it seems unlikely, but not impossible... Richard shows his answer: "Stan." (A reference to baseball player Stanley Frank Musial.) No match today. Looking back at the week: Time ran out on Tuesday before they got to the H/H, but some short games helped get them caught up enough to squeeze two in on Thursday. So we ended the week with 5 H/H matches: Richard 3/5 This is now the second all-Richard H/H week in a row. (We recently had three in a row, from 606-620.) I prefer to see some variety, along the lines of 621-644, when several celebs had a shot. Joyce spent another week without being chosen for the H/H match, so her accuracy score remains stuck at 75% (3 out of 4 attempts). I would love to see her have another go at it. A win would give her 80% and a loss would bring her to 60% (still excellent), but either way it would end the long-standing tie she's been in with Jo Anne Worley, and put a little more meat on the bones of her still skimpy stats. I think her at times "creative" answers in the sixth chair (this is more a of sixth-chair thing than just a Joyce Bulifant thing) hurt her chances of being chosen by a contestant for the big money, plus it seems that her suggestions for the audience match aren't always terribly helpful. Still, she matches a respectable amount during the regular game, and the fact that she did match 3 out of 4 times in the head-to-head match demonstrates that she's good at it. Arlene Francis finished her fourth week without another shot at the H/H match (she did play once, but didn't match). She's only got two weeks to go... And Joey Bishop? What can I say? This was his first week, and he has four more to go during the course of this year (1976). He wasn't selected for the H/H match, but he was called on a few times for an audience match suggestion. We'll just have to see how it goes... Looking ahead: --Our three regulars are present and accounted for. --Semi-regular Patti Deutsch takes the sixth seat once again. She last joined the party four weeks ago (636-640). When it comes to the head-to-head match, she's one for two so far. --Kate Jackson is back for her second and final week, having first appeared in episode 511. She hasn't had a shot at the H/H yet. --And Jimmie Walker returns for his fifth week (of seven). We recently saw him the week of 626-630, plus two extra days (646 & 647) sitting in for CNR in the third seat. Jimmie was chosen for the head-to-head once, but didn't match. Here's the updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts). TIE: Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Fannie - 52.6% (10 wins in 19 attempts). Betty - 50% (17 wins in 34 attempts). Charles - 47.7% (21 wins in 44 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Richard - 40.7% (153 wins in 376 attempts). Brett - 38.5% (20 wins in 52 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 655, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")
Richard won the week giving away 12,200 dollars in head to head and audience match matches with 18 matches for the regulars. Joyce gave away 500 dollars in an audience match match with 7 matches for the semi regulars.
All week I've been laughing because Joey and Brett act like an old married couple. It's funny and sweet. I think Joey loves it because it gives him a great opportunity to be gruff and cranky and complain.
Ive said it before, that judge sucked. Wiping a nose is cleaning it. Just like king Kong is an ape, not a gorilla. That judge should have been fired. He screwed other contestants before from getting a point that would have won them the game. He has allowed points that won the game when it wasnt a match at all. He has screwed over so many people, that some were invited back because of his bad judgements. ok, so no one is perfect. They should have had a panel of 2 judges, or even 3 judges, this way the best out of 2 won. Its better to atleast hope 2 of the 3 judges are better than just the 1.
Wow, the writers went way back for that one. "You've won second prize in a beauty contest" was one of the Chance cards in the board game Monopoly. You won $10 dollars for it, as I recall.
Can't believe people think that Brett is funny. Most of her attempts at humor come from commenting on the other panelists or insulting the women. She should have thanked Jack Klugman back then, her claim to fame
I was thinking it's good that the newest contestant will get someone other than Joey, so maybe she'll have a good chance of winning. Then I saw next week's lineup! 😲
For the record, I don't like these attacks on Ira, as the judge. He tries to be fair, but sometimes the answers are so sketchy, it's hard. You try it, buddy, and then pop off! They're very good about having contestants back that may have gotten a raw deal.
ROFL!! GR as a ape, I knew that was coming for some odd reason.. does that mean I see TOO many MG now. ;0) I will be wondering who was the judge on The Match Game with all the frustration over Ira judging on Match Game.
Arlene is right.

Joey Bishop was the best
Old School!
Richard won the week giving away 12,200 dollars in head to head and audience match matches with 18 matches for the regulars. Joyce gave away 500 dollars in an audience match match with 7 matches for the semi regulars.
brett’s banter with joey and charles is hilarious! joey bishop is great on this show. so funny for the first seat
All week I've been laughing because Joey and Brett act like an old married couple. It's funny and sweet. I think Joey loves it because it gives him a great opportunity to be gruff and cranky and complain.
If you enjoyed him here, you should see his witty wisecracks on the original What's My Line!
Joey Bishop and Jack Klugman both gave Brett the same character to play off of.
Absolutely nothing hilarious about the old hag's banter. She was the absolute worst!
Ive said it before, that judge sucked. Wiping a nose is cleaning it.

Gorillas ARE apes.
Not matching "wipe" with "clean up" was utterly ridiculous.
Panelists:
1. Joey Bishop
2. Brett Somers
3. Charles Nelson Reilly
4. Arlene Francis
5. Richard Dawson
6. Joyce Bulifant
The old hag should have never been part of MG.
17:13 Here it is, " Slide it Earl "
Seriously wipe and clean is the same thing. Arlene is correct!
They should have let that one through.
Ira crashes the party again.
Stan the Man was Stan Musial. C'mon!
But the panel knew of Stan The Man, the contestant didn't think of it.. ;0)
Stan the man Lee from Marvel Comics
"GAME" lit up before "MATCH" in the opening.
Wow, the writers went way back for that one. "You've won second prize in a beauty contest" was one of the Chance cards in the board game Monopoly. You won $10 dollars for it, as I recall.
Yeah, Egypt doesn't have a lot of oil but they do have a lot of sand. A sand sandwich might have been a good answer.
That's what I was thinking!
CNR is the only one I don't hate at this point.
Gotta love CNR he sits back and reads the gossip column in the newspaper.
They put Arlene in the official ditzy seat.
I don’t remember that orchid color outfit ever being in style.
A truly stylish woman doesn't care about fads, but wears the colors and styles that are most becoming to her. The orchid suits Arlene Francis.
I can't remember that far back,
Can't believe people think that Brett is funny. Most of her attempts at humor come from commenting on the other panelists or insulting the women. She should have thanked Jack Klugman back then, her claim to fame
She wasn't a comedian. She tried too hard and often missed the mark.
If King Kong matches gorilla, wipes matches clean
I'm watching these in order. I have just paused for a moment to pray that Joey Bishop never came back to Match Game. Geez what a noodge.
Sometimes Joey Bishop's voice inflection sounds a little like Jackie Mason (Rabbi Hyman Krustofsky on the Simpsons)
Clean = wipe
Clean out = blow.
He should have had at least one match!
I was thinking it's good that the newest contestant will get someone other than Joey, so maybe she'll have a good chance of winning.
Then I saw next week's lineup! 😲
I know, right?
I guess you don't like Jimmy. He does Medicare commercials now.
21:55 Musial
What about in the egyptian dessert, they give a "Sand" sandwich?
For the record, I don't like these attacks on Ira, as the judge. He tries to be fair, but sometimes the answers are so sketchy, it's hard. You try it, buddy, and then pop off! They're very good about having contestants back that may have gotten a raw deal.
NOOOOOO NOT JJ WALKER AGAIN 😞😞😞😞😞😞😞
The Illustrated Man, for us Ray Bradbury fans.
it was (BLANK) The Man...so you then it would be Illustrated The Man. LOL
BURNING man is a huge outdoor concert.
During the Clinton administration, JAN the man. 1976, no idea. Thought STAN the man, but don't really know why. And yet I would have matched.
Stan the Man Musial was a famous baseball player in the 60's and early 70's.
Brett has to hog the camera saying the stupidest stuff all the time
Gene got mad about it sometimes.
Then DON"T WATCH THE SHOW!
I am so SICK of you guys picking on Brett after 3 years
Brett made the show, she was hilarious
NOT
@@kristabrewer6736Brett brought it on herself. Stop being shrill and reactionary. Grow zup!

One time Gene mentioned a woman named Deirdre as a judge too.
Gene needs to treat the celebrity panel with respect or someone needs to yell at her m for having no respect.
He needs to apologize to Brett for telling her to shut up she will get mad at him by slapping him
@@robinstewart6422Like Joey said Can I push gher in the nose? Go ahead!
@@robinstewart6422they are all dead long ago. No one will be apologizing to anyone.
