I've wondered if a better whiskey makes much of a difference in a cocktail and thankfully you did it for me. Thank you for saving me the expense of trying this myself. And you chose two of my favorites, Old Fashion and Sentimental Gentleman. Great video. Btw, anyone else notice in these last two whiskey videos that Jeremy seems to get a little tipsy but his wife handles the drinks just fine? Hmm....
Great video as always. When it comes to cocktails my rule is: "don't break the bank, but use something that holds up to the flavors." So finding that happy medium is important. #gimmieaflask #savethestagg
My heart broke a little there when I saw that Scotch in a mixer. But all is fair in love and content creation. Thanks Jeremy for taking one for the channel!
I've gradually warmed up to using pricier stuff in cocktails because, when they're good and justify their price, they usually translate to that much better of a cocktails. It's like when you're throwing a recipe together; sometimes it's only as good as the ingredients you put together (I say sometimes becomes not everyone will enjoy or appreciate it). Case in point: ECBP in an Old Fashioned. Shit's a game changer.
Wow!!!! You guys are the best!!!! I came home tonight after watching the video earlier and made me a Ginger Ale Whiskey with Wild Turkey rare breed Rye whiskey that rocked me out of my shoes….Loved it. Ended up having 3 more and my night was fulfilled…. Thank you guys…. Jeremy Love the videos, I’m learning so much watching!!!!
Drambuie is really sweet, I have found the sharper elements found in cheaper blended scotch like Dewer's White Label helped to bring balance to a Rusty Nail.
FANTASTIC VIDEO!!! Bottom line is if i'm mixing for special occasions and want to make guests feel special then I'm pouring EH all day! But i'f I'm focussing on making a well balanced cocktail then Old Grand-dad is the standard bourbon of choice. I am a HUGE fan of Old Grand-dad 100 proof for cocktails! with a VERY high rye (27%) content in the mashbill it holds up great to the sugars and bitters.
$800/750ml = $1.07ml. 1 ounce = 29.57ml so roughly $120 for the last cocktail for the 4 ounces. Thanks for testing it out, always interested to see comparisons between expensive and budget in cocktails. My frugal soul would hurt, too, lol. Also it's nice to sip in order to appreciate the time and effort for the more expensive craft items and the nuances that come with it..
I have the same attitude about using expensive whiskey in a cocktail. I usually make my old fashions with WT rye 101. However, when that ran out I caved in and used my sagamore double oak. ( not insanely expensive but still about $65 where I live). I have to say, it was friggin delicious. And then I decided to try it with a peated nikka yoichi. And that was amazing as well and a totally different experience. Now I’m willing to try all my whiskeys and realize that it can totally change the profile of the cocktail. I don’t know why I make rules for myself anymore.
A lot of factors here to consider more than just the drink. Who is it for, how many? etc. Use the best ingredients you can comfortably afford. Just like cooking with wine. The better wines will generally make a better dinner.
I'd say it also depends on the cocktail. With a traditional Old Fashioned I'd prefer something from the higher end range, maybe less than $80, because the spirit isn't buried with a lot of other strong flavors, however, if I was making a smoked apple cinnamon Old Fashioned then I'd probably lean more towards the lower end because the spirit would be competing too much with other stuff. I'd probably also go lower end for a Lion's Tail because the lime and all spice would compete too much. But with a Vieux Carré I'd probably go higher end again.
Not only do I dig your content, but watching how much fun you guys have together, is just the positivity we need on the interwebs. #GIMMIEAFLASK #SAVETHESTAGG
Nice comparison. It would have been interesting to compare the Scotch in something like a perfect or dry Rob Roy. The lighter flavored vermouth may have brought around a different result. Drambuie can really mask or overpower the Scotch, depending on how you mix them.
The results were interesting and thank you for taking one for the team Jeremy. Now the real question would you have the same results for Rum and/or Blended Whiskey?
Great video! Completely agree with y’all! Hurt my heart seeing that Stagg Jr going into a cocktail! Been fortunate enough to try it a couple of times, but still haven’t been able to get my mitts on a bottle…keep up the great work! Cheers!!!🥃
Sir, you shoud definitely bring your Mrs. more to the show. Such a pleasant surprise to see you both sharing thoughts and ideas. Greetings from Brazil.
Stumbled upon your channel a few days ago and went with your recommendation for budget bourbons. Used Wild Turkey 101 for an old fashioned last night and it was killer. Thanks! By the way, I love Beard Brand and hang out with the guys every time I'm in Austin.
Years ago I made up a cocktail called “What a pear!” Using Stagg Jr, unfiltered apple juice, pear liqueur, some bitters, and pear slices! I remember it being quite good. Just haven’t had the chance to get Stagg Jr again to make it. Haha
Great Video. I have to wonder what the result would have been had you used rare bread vs stagg. Still would have been budget vs expensive but the proof would have been closer.
Not to snob out but there is a mash bill component in an old fashion. OGD being high rye compared to EHT makes sense as to why it would be favorable. They're both fine whiskeys but if I'm picking one for that specific cocktail its always the high rye regardless of brand, cost, perception, or hyped cost. A cocktail is a recipe and like any recipe and the ingredients are important to creating the desired experience. For my taste rye or high rye bourbon in an old fashion is the way to go.
Really enjoyed this one guys! You two have a great way about you and very entertaining. I agree, very disrespectful to put a high end scotch in a cocktail 😮😊
I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one that finds that there are cheaper alternative whiskies for cocktails. I typically use bottom shelf for mixed drinks (whiskey & coke), mid range for cocktails and the higher priced bottles for just enjoying neat. #gimmieaflask #savethestagg
Another great video. I won't use my more expensive bottles in a cocktail and I will vary the amount of mixer used to pair with the whiskey (lower proof = less mixer). Try using the walnut bitters in the old fashion to make the drink even better and Famous Grouse is another budget friendly scotch whisky to use in a cocktail. #gimmieaflask #savethestaff
The Old Fashion is now my favorite after trying many mixed drinks, that is if I am not drinking my Whiskey straight. Thanks for introduction to Wild Turkey as a good price point Whiskey, with Big Al giving it a thumbs up to another fellow woman Whiskey lover. #givemeaflask #savethestagg
always curious how expensive to go before its not worth it anymore. Budget budget really makes a difference in cocktails I dont think medium to expensive does. Love your videos #givemeaflask #savethestagg
19:05 Love the video and the idea but here is what I have found, when you change the whiskey you need to change your proportions. Even when talking cheaper if I go higher proof vs lower proof, if I have a very barrel forward or sweet forward or wine finish forward whiskey. You adjust to emphasize the whiskey it is in, same way you would with using a fancy ingredient cooking. Now you can't really do that in a head to head or you would know right away but that is what I found the key to getting the most out of a cocktail with an expensive or fancy whiskey. #gimmieaflask #savethestagg
This was another fun one! Super cool idea to actually test the blind preferences. While i usually tend to throw higher proofed whiskeys in my cocktails to keep the whiskey flavors strong, I tend to keep my less budget friendly ones away from mixers. Also, Fred Noe, Jim Beam Master Distiller's quote is the best way to "drink whiskey is any d*mn way you please" #gimmieaflask #savethestagg
As difficult as it may be to find, Stagg is still just a $60 bottle of bourbon. I literally picked some up last week at my local convenience store for $60 (The new batch 19 22B is great!). It's great stuff, but please don't let yourself get ripped off by the scalpers. This is by no means $250+ whiskey. Sure, if you want some right this instant, it'll cost you about that much. But if you find the right place and get your name on a list you can get one within a few weeks/months for a much fairer price.
Brotha I wish that were true everywhere, unfortunately it just isn’t. I haven’t seen a bottle of stagg in my area for over 5 years for less than $150. Some places just don’t get the same allocations that other areas do. Sooo, unfortunately if you want a bottle you have to pay. I am pretty close with all the local stores because of how much whiskey I buy and I still can’t get a bottle for close to the $60 your talking about. 😏
@@JeremySiers Damn that's really unfortunate. I'm just about as far as you can get from Kentucky while staying within the US here in Seattle. I was thinking if we were getting it for MSRP distribution must have been getting more reliable. Maybe there just isnt enough demand in my area for people to be price gouging.
Yeah man, the whiskey business is a weird one. Especially with allocated whiskeys like stagg jr, George t stagg, Weller, etc. Different areas get different allocations. Some areas don’t get any at all. So depending on the amount allocated to an area and the demand in that area prices can be all over the place. It’s a cluster f$ck to be honest 😜😂. Some states also have restrictions where they have to sell it at a certain price. Others don’t, so prices can go a bit crazy depending on how rare it is.
Good video. Gotta love the Rusty Nail! DRAMBUIE!!! Thanks for the entertainment and takin one for the team. Don't know that I'd have the stones to put the 38 year in anything but a pristine Glencarin. #gimmeaflask #savethestagg
Have you tried Mr. Black a coffee liqueur…love to make Iced coffee with a triple shot, Half and Half, sweetened to taste with several Splenda packets…keep the videos coming…
My buddy and I have a phrase “Coke your blue“ meaning to enjoy whatever it is you have how you have it. Kind of like the whiskey tribe. If you want to put Johnny Walker blue into your glass of Coke, all the power to you. He was gifted a small bottle of Johnny Walker blue, and we both tried it and decided that it is no better than Johnny Walker Black. That’s just our opinion, of course that is subjective. We still have the bottle, and the only time we use it is if someone decides to be a snob and we want to make them cringe by pouring an ounce or so into a glass of Coke. Love the content! #gimmieaflask #savethestagg
I love when you guys do these comparison videos, especially “ Big All”. You guys are a professional couple in the beginning, by the end, you guys are LOUD, GIGGLY AND CURSING. SHIT IF FUNNY AS HELL! 😂😂😂😂

I love some OGD, both the 114 and Bonded! Great budget pour, for sure!!
what a fun time watching this video. I agree, no high dollar juice in a simple cocktail
Great video as always. When it comes to cocktails my rule is: "don't break the bank, but use something that holds up to the flavors." So finding that happy medium is important. #gimmieaflask #savethestagg
My heart hurt when u poured that 38 year scotch into a cocktail. Thanks brother for all u do! #gimmieaflask #savethestagg
My heart broke a little there when I saw that Scotch in a mixer. But all is fair in love and content creation. Thanks Jeremy for taking one for the channel!
Great to know what to mix and what not to mix.

My first time watching this channel. This is a delightful couple! And a solid, honest discourse on whiskey.

my favorite cheap Bourbon to blast in a cocktail is Four Roses. Its always 3 rows deep, in every liquor store, and around $20ish bucks!
I like the Stagg Jr as an old fashioned it is great!!! Because the high proof holds up ..
Great vidya. Y’all killed it. Thanks for taking one for the team.
Drambuie is really sweet, I have found the sharper elements found in cheaper blended scotch like Dewer's White Label helped to bring balance to a Rusty Nail.

Appreciate your sacrifice of your top of the top shelf supply! As always, great video!
While I occasionally enjoy an Old Fashioned, my wife and I love a good Whiskey Sour. Our budget whiskey is Evan Williams Bottled in Bond.
I really enjoy the relationship you guys have
$800/750ml = $1.07ml. 1 ounce = 29.57ml so roughly $120 for the last cocktail for the 4 ounces. i normally use bottles i dont enjoy neat for mixers just to kill them but i have made some killer ranch waters with some high end tequila.
at last Whisky, i love Old Fashioned and for me 101 it's delicious. Great video 👍
Thanks for taking one for the team, that 101 is my goto for bourbon cocktails. Love the turkey. #Givemeaflask #savethestagg
Love how yall started with my favorite cocktail. Drink almost exclusively old fashioned when i get a cocktail
#give me a flask
#save the stag
Just received my first bottle of Wild Turkey 101 follow your recommendation, will let you know how it tastes.

Guys, this was awesome. Thank you
Nothing like a good drink and a cigar !!!!👍🏻
Awesomeness!!
Always a pleasure..
Monkey shoulder rocks…. As a budget mixer scotch…
Cheers
Great video! I totally agree, save the top shelf for sipping and savoring!
#givemeaflask #savethestagg
I agree don’t use expensive whiskey for cocktails. I use Makers Mark or Wild Turkey 101

Ginger Ale replacement = Polar ginger lime mule seltzer with your whiskey of choice and lime… game over 💪🏻
Great Video. I have to wonder what the result would have been had you used rare bread vs stagg. Still would have been budget vs expensive but the proof would have been closer.
You guys should try the comparison on a rob roy or a perfect rob Roy
Best timed “that’s what she said” maybe, ever! Well done!
I entered into the whiskey world because of you man! Great video 👏
I really can't believe you used stagg jr. In a mixed drink , but it was awesome to see , really enjoy your content.
Y'all killing it, If this was a podcast I'd listen for hours
NM, I wrote this prematurely before the video wrapped. Love the other channel

Let's see how the Stagg, Jr holds up to Rare Breed instead of the 101 proof Turkey.
Hear a lot of people say they prefer the 101, something about being balanced better.
Monkey Shoulder is a good budget scotch, but If you're willing to entertain a suggestion from another whiskey drinker, you should try McClelland's Highland. It's one of those bottles that's priced well below its worth. You and "Big AL" keep it up these videos. My wife & I love em - Thanks
