Wakeman originally wanted to record Journey in a studio, but it was too expensive for him and the orchestra, that's why they had to record live. After 39 he is finally able to give us this version of the Journey masterpiece: And it was worth it. Epic.
When I listen to this - I find it almost incomprehensible that every note played - by each and every member of the orchestra - including himself - and all the lyrics to all the songs . . . came out of the head of one person not yet 25 yrs old. When most of us had not even finished our educations, and were still partying hearty on the weekends . . . RW had done this and staged it and recorded it. It absolutely staggers the imagination.
I can't believe I'm hearing this some 30 plus years later after I heard it in college. C'est magnifique. Incroyable! Uno de mis discos favritos! Molto bene! Perhaps its just my anglophile nature.
We used to always listen to this on a portable cassette player when we were night fishing after we had been down the pub, village life how it takes me back, its funny you don't realise at the time that these are the days of your life.
I love both the 1974 and the 2012 "Journey". This is proof that "Journey" is more than a mere work of art. It has a "life" all its own. A real "what if" realized. Can you imagine what could have been the result of Jimi Hendrix surviving and continuing his work instead of dying as he did, and musically connecting with Prince and some others?
I have lessened to this every year from the beginning in the 70s to the present this is truly a classic. Mr Rick Wakeman thank you for this wonderful rendition of Journey to the center of the earth . As a child I love the story I remember watching a cartoon of the story as a child as well on local TV in America always had a fascination for Journey . Thank you for adding this to music it’s as good as it was from the beginning. A timeless classic.
This album is just jaw-droppingly genius. I love that this studio version is far different than the live versions. It was like rediscovering the album for me.
it's a storey it flows on its magic to listen in the dark.you can be there with them if u shut your eyes Rick wakeman should be knighted and put up with the likes of Mozart Bach Beethoven
Used to sit and listen to the LP in my bedroom so often as an teenager. I think I preferred the raw sound of the live recording but it's great to hear this again!
Ohhhh! What a Delightful Treat To put the day & work aside and wander to The Centre of the Earth accompanied by the music of the one and only Rick Wakeman.
I think the 1974 original just has the edge on this second version, as good as this one is. I might be a little biased as I was at the recording (The second show of two on the day) at the Royal Festival Hall back in January 1974. The whole evening was fantastic and even a prog rock sceptic friend of mine thought it a great concert. One of your best Mr Wakeman !

HACE 5 AÑOS QUE LO ESCUCHÉ POR PRIMERA VEZ. CADAVEZ QUE LA HE VUELTO A ESCUCHAR HE ENCONTRADO ALGO NUEVO EN ELLA. CON ELLA HAN CRECIDO MIS HIJOS. ES LA MÚSICA DE MI VIDA.
This is the best version of the Three that I have listened. This is a studio version, not a concert where you can hear an idiot coughing in the background. The voice of the narrator and the woman singing are better.
Saw Rick do this in full in concert in Adelaide Sth Australia in 1973? The 2nd half of the show was his complete new album 6 wives of Henry VIII. What an amazing show, including the giant blow up dinosaur. Ah....70's stage effects. Brilliant show though.
This version of Centre of the Earth has some things that the original 1974 version doesn't have. I remember reading a story on how some pieces of music weren't included in the original because they were "lost" and later found and sent to Wakeman sometime before the reissue of Journey... The original's pretty damn good but this new version has a different kind of weight to it when you compare it to the sound of the original.
Actually the "Echoes" and "Quaternary Man" pieces were cut from the original version so the whole presentation could fit on vinyls. But what happened is that the score for the orchestra was stored with the company that used to manage Wakeman's career . And when the company went bust, that score was misplaced somewhere and lost for years. That's why Rick Wakeman never did any presentations with an orchestra again. He didn't want to rewrite it because he felt he wouldn't be able to do it exactly the same way again. And in 2009 he received from the post some random boxes which he left on his garage for months before checking them out.... and when he finally opened them, in one of them was the score for the orchestra there. I think he doesn't even know who send them this stuff. And then he decided to redo Journey To THe Centre of the Earth completely this time :)
To dragoncrashhero: I agree with your comments. It's nice to get to hear more clearly certain things he did in 1974 and I'm glad he got to fulfill his original desire, but as well I am a purist and prefer the original that I grew up with.
My favorite version will always be the version from the siney meyer bowl which was on ABCs In Concert series. It was simulcast on our local FM station WRIF. I realized this was an oppurtunity to get this "album" for free and recorded it. Months later, I borroed the album version from a friend to compare the two and hated it. The narrator put no feeling into it. I think the version that I love and grew up with is available on Amazon. Damn. Looks like I'm going to have to pay for it after all.
But I have not been able to find it. I have bought 2 different DVDs and one CD, hoping they were it. I played that tape hundred of times, so I had it memorized. The 3 versions I have are not that concert. I've been concentrating lately on Keith Emerson's music, but I think I'm going to start looking again. This version is almost as bad as the album version. Again, a very boring narrater.
For years we have listened to this work with its strange cuts, clicks, hisses, studio re recorded parts, volume ups and downs... now we learn that all those imperfections that Wakeman suffered for years were one of the most interesting details. The "in the flesh" live details. It was 1974. Keyboards were in their infancy, alcohol and drugs were onstage, they were young and full of energy... Still prefer the original
Rick is playing a real minimoog in this recording. I own one and play it everyday. When I listen to this, there's no doubt that it's a Moog to me. Another thing to consider is that the original was mixed and engineered with all analog equipment and there's a good chance this new recording was mixed with at least some digital equipment. I'm not sure how much I buy into the whole analog vs digital thing anymore in this day and age, sampling is so much more accurate now... one thing is for sure though, I will never part with the mini.
RIP Gary Pickford Hopkins, but Rick could/should have got Jon Anderson to do the vocals, that is why he chose Gary Pickford Hopkins whose voice was similar in tone and timbre.
Bought the original in the 70's played it a million times and now according to Rick this is as it always should have been. 2 Big mistakes.. 1. The Narrator The original narrator was so much better. He pulled you into the story and the music made you feel it all. I was a wonder for over 4 decades. 2. The New synths. The old synth were a nightmare to play but sounded so much better. (Rick had them on Retro so why not now??) The addition at 11:00- 12:30 is 100% perfect and should always have been there... I absolutly love the new track at 17:06 At 34:36 totaly wrong synth. Why o why But in the end it is all up to Rick. It's his music. We are only privilaged to listen to it. Love Rick and will alway be his biggest fan.

ITS AMAZING HOW THEY GOT ALL THE MUSICIANS & EQUIPMENT INTO THE VOLCANO
Kudos!
As a 13 yeard old fixated on this album in the 70 's , thanks for the "out of the box" original rock opera brilliance.
I had the good fortune of seeing this concert, 1974

I've been to Rick's concert in last year. He played the music by piano solo. I would like to listen " King Arthur" with full orchestra in my life.

Hello brothers...! We listen IT one more time..! And we love IT one more time...!
We've been linstening this album in Brazil since the 70's...
Great and Divine music for me !

Me too. Can't find one with the original singers at all. This version isn't as good.

por fin escuchó algo de rick wakeman!!!
Love Forever Rick!!! ♫♫♫
that´s very good indeed
Muito bom. Faço minhas as palavras do Guillermo. Muito bom mesmo
Magnificent
Bought the original in the 70's
played it a million times and now according to Rick this is as it always should have been.
2 Big mistakes..
1. The Narrator
The original narrator was so much better. He pulled you into the story and the music made you feel it all. I was a wonder for over 4 decades.
2. The New synths.
The old synth were a nightmare to play but sounded so much better.
(Rick had them on Retro so why not now??)
The addition at 11:00- 12:30 is 100% perfect and should always have been there...
I absolutly love the new track at 17:06
At 34:36 totaly wrong synth. Why o why
But in the end it is all up to Rick.
It's his music.
We are only privilaged to listen to it.
Love Rick and will alway be his biggest fan.
***** You are wrong about the synths. Rick still uses the MiniMoog a lot here. Though I wish it would be mixed a tad higher sometimes.
yes but not in this recording. He should have used the old ones.
On this recording he is using MiniMoog. The real thing. Yes I do agree about the Mellotron, Clavinet etc, but the MiniMoog is still there.
True but u did mean the other ones. but it is Just my feelings About it.
Greatness
grande grande RICK arrangiamento favoloso bravi
This kicks ass !!!!!!!! Wakeman rules !!!!!!!!!!
amazing ¡¡
Funtastik!
a great masterpiece remembering my fourteen YO
Muito bom !!!
I have the music book for this album. Love it!
GRACIAS
Genius
I use sound forge it lets you record anything that goes through your soundcard.
Best songs respct truuu
That new Korg has nothing on the fat, over-driven analog Moog, for this production anyway. I wish he had stuck with it more in this piece.
superspit He is actually using the real MiniMoog a lot in this recording. I wish it could have been mixed a tad higher in some areas though.
Really....didn't sound like the 70's classic unit, at all, in most parts.
It,s a great!
Gostei muito.
Great Rick retorn to play to Spain
