2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid - The Fuel Sipping CUV

  • The new RAV4 Hybrid isn't just the most efficient RAV4 for 2019, or indeed the most efficient compact CUV in America, it's also (oddly enough) the fastest RAV4 as well. The new hybrid isn't a direct replacement for the often wished for V6, but it is now one of the better performing small CUVs while also delivering over 40 MPG in the city.

The day has finally arrived for you take ownership of your new car. You’ve hunted, haggled and closed the deal.
The car is yours. The keys have been handed over. The last thing you need to do before you drive away from the dealership is sign a document saying you’re happy with the vehicle.
Here’s what you do before you put your name anywhere.
A visual inspection of the paintwork -- no scratches, no swirls, no patchy patches.
Ensure the panels are all aligned and blemish-free.
Inspect the windshield and window glass for cracks or chips.
Check all the lights - interior and exterior.
Check all the controls work - like windscreen wipers, demisters, radio, air-con etc.
Check under the bonnet and ensure all fluids are topped up.
If you come across any problems, note them on the document. These are issues that can be resolved under warranty.
If there are any major issues with the car, you don’t have to sign the at all. The car will stay with the dealer to be looked at, and the process will be repeated once the dealer deems the problems solved.
If the car is problem-free, your transaction is done and it is time to drive off into the sunset. Congratulations!
      ‘Run in’ your new car
There are a lot of ideas out there about running in new engines. The hundreds of components that make up a car need time to settle and ‘running in’ is believed to be the best way to do this.
Sometimes the running in process will be described in your owner’s manual, but the basic idea is to put your new car through its paces with varying loads in different driving conditions (for example, stop-start city driving and freeway driving), using all gears at changing speeds.
Just don’t abuse the engine for the first 1,500km or so.
      That means:
      Don’t over-rev the engine.
Try to keep engine speed somewhere between 2000 rpm and 4000 rpm.
Don’t keep a constant speed, though, accelerate and decelerate often.
Don’t idle for more than a few minutes at a time.
      Please, don’t tow a trailer.

I test drove both the 2019 CRV and rav4 at my local dealership yesterday. The only thing the CRV had over the rav4 was the front passenger seat and the fact it comes standard with a car starter built into the keys. The rav passenger seat is not only not electric, but it unfortunately has pretty limited movement. It has no lumbar adjustment either, just a simple limited manual slide front to back and recline front to back. The CRV seats are both highly adjustable and both are electric. Besides these two things, the rav4 is the better vehicle. I am holding out for the hybrid to arrive this Thursday so I can test drive it. I have always been a honda guy. I've been driving accords for the last 15 years. We just decided we are trading in our '13 accord for either a '19 CRV or rav4. Right now we are leaning towards the rav4. Just a matter of whether or not it will be the hybrid or gas model. If we don't go with the hybrid model we will likely opt for the the adventure gas model. As the 3500 lb towing capacity is a significant draw for us since we could pull our pop up with it instead of using our gas guzzling tundra.

  • @rj.parker
    @rj.parker 5 років тому +229

Hybrids have more complexity but electric driven water pumps, fans, power steering, ac, no alternator, etc all combine to eliminate belts and mechanical stresses on many parts. It is actually easier to design reliability and provide variable speed to electric components allowing longer life and lower rpms more often. The electric drive motors are three phase high power brushless and have demonstrated almost no failures. The adkinson cycle gas engines are typically tuned for economy over low end torque and also have dynamic start stop at all speeds, effectively reducing run hours by 25% or more. The 12vdc control batteries are not used for starting or other high amp requirements, are agm, and are housed inside the cabin for 5 to 10 year lifespans. Brakes last well over 200k miles in many cases due to regenerative braking taking the vast majority of the braking requirements away from friction brakes. Plus Toyota warrants their hybrid components for 100k - 150k miles depending on the state. The HV batteries typically last longer than 150k miles, often 250k or more. Aftermarket rebuilding companies now supply warranted replacements for as low as $900 installed (a 30 minute no special tools process). Typical users save around $10k in fuel over 200k miles, making a HV battery swap less painful. Electric power control (the inverter/converter) was a primary challenge to make compact, affordable and reliable. They are separately water cooled while the HV batteries have integral cabin air cooling. Electric is the future especially when executed by the best.

Not to mention that the engine employs direct and port fuel injection systems which have been MUCH more reliable long-term than direct injection engines. It also avoids using a turbo, which we know is much less reliable.

Well said, accurate, thanks. Just a side question (I'm all in on RAV4 hybrid). Can the gas 2.5 in the non hybrid models switch from normal to Adkinson cycle and back. Normal for power and torque, Adkinson for cruise?

    • @captmarko

Charles Powell I have not seen a yes or no in this, it would be wise to allow it to in some power mode, but not sure.

Sanjeev, I think you are right. Per edmunds 48 state drive, the driver's seat is the most comfortable seat in the car, but still not great. Front passenger seat is the least comfortable, sitting too high and not being adjustable. Come on Toyota, Honda can put decent seats in the CRV, so why can't you do so in the RAV4?

I have to admit that I'm not the easiest person to negotiate with and I didn't exactly make friends in the process. Someone wise once said something about successful negotiation and leaving money on the table, but I tend to go the other extreme and have quite a nice table collection as a result.
If you're trying to go lower still - good luck, but you'll need to do your research on what incentives corporate are doing that month as you can't expect the dealership to cover the costs of everything (for me - tinting and insurance was covered by corporate). Start with getting to a price for the car itself, then try and see how many add-ons you can get at cost (or close to it) and be prepared to get the rest after-market (I'm still waiting on seat covers and roof racks to arrive).
For reference, I was offered a demo with 6 months rego for $34k which if I hadn't found someone desperate to make quota on my deal I would have taken and been happy with.

Good choice. Toyota has announced they will be building even more RAV4 Hybrids in Kentucky next year to keep up with demand. We have a 2010 Tacoma with the 'old' 4.0 V6 and automatic, from what I can tell people who bought the manual with the new 3.5 V6 are happier than those that bought the auto.

My friend bought a Honda Clarity and sort of inspired me to look something similar.
So I think my future purchase based on my family needs is a Hybrid CRV or RAV4.
Now based on the conversation I had with him about the features on clarity and looking at reviews such as above has me confused and scratching my head. As I don't hear anyone mention how many miles or Km's can a person get just on the electric?
I am hoping to have a vehicle which allows me to use electric aspect up 50 mile range and only electric. If I utilize the and run out of juice it can switch over to gas. However my daily commute to and from work will be about 50 mile or 110km so I come home and at that point I would charge and be ready for next day. However if I want to take family for a long drive I would obviously need gas as charging stations may be and logistics may limit or slow my journey.
Now is this something that is doable in the hybrid rav 4??
Or it just gives you better MPG combination and utilizing the hybrid system?

My wife bought a 2019 Avalon Hybrid Limited based largely on Alex's thorough and detailed review. Now I'm seriously considering the 2019 RAV4, in the same Limited trim as the Avalon, to replace my 2011 Nissan Murano SUV. While the Murano has a few more bells and whistles than the RAV4, I think the 2019 RAV4 Hybrid Limited hits the mark for me. PLUS, the RAV4's infotainment system appears to be identical to the 2019 Avalon's. This greatly helps simplify our lives when switching between vehicles! The only things missing from the 2019 RAV4 Hybrid Limited compared to the 2019 Avalon Hybrid Limited are Head-Up-Display, power steering wheel adjustments and power passenger seat adjustments. I'd appreciate anyone's comments andI can't wait for Alex's full review. Thanks, Alex. YOU ROCK!!
