    Learn how to use Shutter Priority mode on the Nikon D3200 and adjust the Shutter Speed to whatever you'd like.
    Shutter Priority Overview:
    In Shutter Priority Mode, you select the shutter speed while the camera automatically selects the best aperture for a balanced exposure. Use fast shutter speeds (like 1/500 or 1/1000) to freeze fast moving subjects (sports) and slower shutter speeds (like 3 to 5 seconds) to capture movement (flowing water).
    Instructions:
    To enable, just rotate the mode dial to the letter 'S' and then rotate the smaller command dial (near the thumb rest) to adjust the shutter speed.
    Fastest and Slowest Shutter Speeds on the Nikon D3200:
    The fastest shutter speed you can use in Shutter Priority mode is 1/4000, while the slowest shutter speed you can use is 30" seconds.
    Questions:
    If you have questions, feel free to ask me in my Nikon D3200 forum here: forums.camerati....
    Happy Shooting!

    Wanted to get into Photography, had no idea where to start, so I went to the old mom and pop camera shop down the road and picked this exact camera up, with a long distance lens as a bonus (all used). my pictures were terrible! but after finding your videos today I've improved quite abit. thank you for helping those you don't even know. this world needs more kindness...and pretty pictures =)

    My boyfriend gifted me a camera not realizing I have zero talent for taking pictures even with a smart phone but I decided to entertain his choice in gift and I purchased your cheat cards to help guide me, its made learning about this tricky camera so easy. I think I'll give it a few more tries...anyway thank you for the videos and these nifty cards!!

    +Moose Winans I have Nikon D3000 and this video is helpful. Thank you for this great tutorial. My daughter is playing basketball and very disappointed because I can't get a decent shots of her and her team mates every time they played basketball. Now, I'm excited to take some pictures this coming Saturday!

      +Nita T - That's great Nita! If I may ask, which lens do you have? If it's the kit lens or an entry level zoom lens, it may be hard (or impossible) to get decent shots inside a poorly lit gym.

    It is always flashing a question mark saying 'Lighting is poor'. This message appears even if the the exposure meter shows '0'. First it asks us to reduce shutter speed, then still says 'Lighting is poor, use flash'. Why to show such message even if the light is good?

    yeah I have a nikon d90, and I try to adjust the shutter speed to 1/1000 but don't know how to. On the nikon d90, unlike your model, the shutter speed shows up as a decimal number such as 1.3 or 1.6. Forgive me for asking such a dumb question, but how would you change it to fraction? Or any way to identify it as a fraction? Nice video by the way

    I'm new to photography, and my goal here is to get a fast moving object in a still frame with no flash. I would set it to the no flash setting that there is on the dial, since I can't figure out how to take flash off otherwise, but the shutter speed is too slow so I followed what you did for setting the shutter speed and it won't go faster than 1/200. It'll go much slower. Much, much slower. But 1/200 seems to be some sort of imaginary limit, even though I can see on the dial beside it visually that I'm able to go faster. Any ideas? (And ideas on other ways I can turn off flash?)

I cannot get rid of that msg whatever ISO i set the camera to. • @Mrgabrielgmachado
      @Mrgabrielgmachado 10 років тому

      Because it is really fast, so not so much light will reach the sensor. You can reduce this speed depending on where you are or what you are shooting, or buy a fast lens, with a bigger aperture f/1.8 f/1.6 f/1.4...

    • @MooseWinans
      @MooseWinans  8 років тому +2

      I would put most of your budget towards the right lens, then use what you have left towards a DSLR. Even if you have to buy used, it's the best way to ensure high quality photos from the get go.

      Moose Winans thanks. I'll surely consider your advice.
      Just wanted to ask, what'd be your suggestion for getting some good lens for the Nikon d3300?

    • @MooseWinans
      @MooseWinans  8 років тому

      I'd start with the 50mm f/1.8G. I actually made a video about it here: ua-cam.com/video/zF-QD_ij3is/v-deo.html

    • @mazinbashar4140
      @mazinbashar4140 8 років тому +1

      Moose Winans I sure will check the video out. Just wanted to ask, what type of photography is it good for?
      Also, I do understand that there'll be reason why the primes are praised so much, but I don't understand the reason. Can you help me? Can't the 18-55mm kit lens be set to 50mm and then the only difference between it and the prime is the aperture, isn't it? I mean, what'd be the reason to get a prime over a zoom lens?

    • @MooseWinans
      @MooseWinans  8 років тому

      It's excellent for everyday, real world photos in both bright light and low light situations. The biggest advantage is low light performance. Prime lenses allow more light into the camera thanks to a lower aperture f-number. More on that here: ua-cam.com/video/oGE9YI7klkE/v-deo.htmlm38s

    how can u increase the shutter to longer then 30 seconds on the d3200

    • @MooseWinans
      @MooseWinans  8 років тому

      +Gilberto Godoy - You have to enable manual mode (M) and adjust the shutter speed to bulb mode. In bulb mode, you press the shutter once to open it and a second time to close it. Ideally you would use a remote to prevent your finger causing camera shake during the exposure. :)

      +Katy Wella - Hey Katy, it sounds like it's an autofocus issue. Meaning, the camera hasn't acquired focus when you go to push the shutter button. If you put your camera into Auto or Sport mode, are you getting the same delay?

      +Moose Winans +Moose Winans it's faster on auto or sports but still not as fast as I would like it pictures are still a little blurry but not bad. How do I fix the auto focus issue?

      +Moose Winans is it something I can fix? Or do I need to take it some place?

      +Katy Wella - By chance, are you shooting in "Live View" mode where you compose and shoot with the LCD screen? If so, this could be the issue. It's not meant to be used with fast action. It's really only good for landscapes and still life. Other than that, I'm not sure what the issue could be.

      +Moose Winans nope I shoot using the viewfinder. Should I take it someplace to get it looked at? If so what place would you recommend to take it to?

    Hi I have Nikon D3000 and I want to know to shoot a moving car and running person note:I have stock lense

      Hey Khaled Bakr - If you're looking to do a panning effect, where the subject is in focus and the background has movement...set the shutter speed between 1/15 to 1/30. Focus on the subject, press the shutter button and continue to follow the subject as they move through the frame.
      If you're looking to just freeze fast action, set your shutter speed to 1/500 and increase it from there (1/1000 to 1/2000) depending on how fast the subject is moving.
      All the best! :)

      how would u adjust it manually sir?

    • @MarioxJolienSpiderFreak
      @MarioxJolienSpiderFreak 7 років тому

      Dante Carimat Wel Just turning the wheel would change the Shutterspeed in [ M ] Manual mode... or in this video it is in [ S ] Shutter priority mode also turning the wheel all the rest does it automaticly based on the natural light. If in [ M ] Manual mode you'll need everything to change manually also by the Wheel but combined with another button

      That's a great idea! I mainly created this video because I kept getting questions about how to enable shutter speed and change the shutter speed value. 😁

      Moose Winans how come the Fstop goes up as your shutter speed gets higher? What if I want 30 seconds but low f stop? How do I accomplish this? It won't let me adjust how I want in manual mode.

    • @MooseWinans
      @MooseWinans  7 років тому +1

      kimber henry - The lowest available aperture is determined by your lens. If you have an 18-55mm for example, the lowest aperture you can get at 18mm is f/3.5 and the lowest aperture at 55mm is f/5.6. You can set the aperture to these values in manual mode if you wish.
