9:52 TMS ent ( the studio behind Akira) worked as sub-contract animators for Batman! and the other DC animated shows!
Eric saying that they haven't done Clayface in live action bc he's "really not like Batman" is a problem. The live action movies lean far too much on realism, making people forget about the fantastical side of Batman's mythos.
He'd have to be CGI though, easy to mess up.
@@WhiteFangofWar Yeah, we don't want a repeat of X-Men: Apocalypse
@@predatoryzzx What do you mean?
@@WhiteFangofWar So? A lot things is easy to mess up when making a film, but that shouldn't discourage anyone from doing them
Agreed! Would love more fantastical villains for a Batman movie
Fun fact: Studio Ghibli animators worked on this episode as well as the Batman/Superman crossover episode. Back in the day, animation studios would often help each other out on projects when their animators weren't busy in exchange for help later down the line. Gibhli and one of the studios that animated Batman and Superman the Animated Series did such a swap. Ghibli was going to need help with Princess Mononoke, so they lent their animators out in preparation for later cooperation. So, Ghibli animators were tasked with working on segments of episodes. That is why Annie looks like an anime character in this episode because she was literally animated by some of the best anime artists of the day.
This is probably the inspiration for that one Harley Quinn episode where Clayface lost his arm and then it gained its own personality and bonded with Gordon.
Fuck the Harley Quinn series. 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻 Boo!
Still better than 80% of Marvel anmited series 😂 @kevinhanson7867
@@kevinhanson7867Really don't get the irrational hate of that show. I don't like it much either, but it ain't on the level of something like Velma.
Damn. 25 years later and this ep STILL stands out as amongst the greatest eps from the entire DCAU. In terms of emotional resonance, it's right there with Heart of Ice. The anime style you guys picked up on is really how I wished a lot of this new era of BTAS was.
This is also Shirley Walker's masterpiece. Very Silence of the Lambs-esque in terms of horror, suspense, and tragedy.
One of the big hints that Annie wasn't a normal human was her art style.
She was modeled after Mathilda, from Leon: The Professional.
They also had the lighthouse, the same from the episode mudslide, so that keen eyed viewers would know what was going on.
And Kane was a reference to Bob Kane.
bob kane the guy who refused to share any credit for batman's creation with bill finger until after bill died? (edit: and even then didn't allow his name to be credited) The Bob Kane who is known to have used ghost artists throughout most of his run on the character? The Bob Kane who made a deal with DC for exclusive credit rights for batman that simultaneously hurt Sigel's and Shuster's attempts' for creative control over superman after they approached Bob over a potential joint suit against Dc? That Bob Kane is a "wonderful man" in your eyes?
edit: just for future context the original comment has now been edited. Originally it called Bob a "Wonderful Man"
@@thewerewolff7248
Well then, didn't know he was that much of a bitch.
Thanks for the heads up wolfy.
@@thewerewolff7248
Weird, thought I replied to you but the reply isn't there anymore.
Wanted to say thanks for the heads up, didn't know Kane was such a jerk.
@@ArlanKels
no problem. I'd highly recommend watching Comic Tropes' video on the subject and if you have time the Documentary "Batman and Bill" for more information. In particular the latter also goes in depth into how an author named Marc Tyler Nobleman managed to to get Bill a name credit in all batman material starting with Batman V Superman.
@@ArlanKels Can confirm Bob Kane has always been a grade a scumbag. He stole Batman, used his name to live on easy fame for his entire life, while Bill Finger died alone, afraid, homeless and miserable.
Fun Fact : Annie is voiced by the same actress who voiced Helga in Hey Arnold, Francesca Marie Smith
A real emotional breaker of an episode, reminds me of the 2nd Hydro Man episode in Spider-Man TAS. You're not a real member of the Bat-family until you have your heart metaphorically ripped out at least once. Welcome to the club, Tim Drake.
In regards to the name “Kane”, Kathy Kane and Bette Kane had existed in comics as Batwoman and Bat-Girl
but Kate Kane as Batwoman wasn’t around until the 2000s.
God, this episode really stuck with me. It was such a rough one too because it was probobly the closest thing to child murder this show could get away with.
This episode's ending, Two-Face breaking down when he can't find his special coin in "Two-Face: Part Two", and the very end of "Appointment in Crime Alley" are the three times the show made me emotional.
@15:47 The name “Kane” is probably a reference to Batman Co-creator Bob Kane. I’m not sure if Kate Kane was a thing yet, I don’t think she was, so the sign most likely isn’t referring to her.
Kate Kane was created in the 70s but her name is also a reference to Bob Kane
@adaurysantos Kate Kane was created in 2006. The original Batwoman, Kathy Kane, first appeared in 1956 and was killed off in the 70s
@@Metatronio Oh ok gotchu
This episode is what a real tragedy looks like.
One of the darkest and coolest episodes of BTAS. Clayface wouldn't appear again until Justice League TAS. Mike Flanagan's supposedly doing a Clayface movie for the DCU.
The Kane sign is a reference to Batman comics co-creator Bob Kane.
And also, to the other side of Bruce Wayne's family - his mother's maiden name was Kane (itself a reference to Bob Kane).
@@N0-1_H3r3 Except when it's Arkham.
That Kane Easter egg on the building is a reference to Bob Kane. Him and Bill Finger created Batman
Yep, a genuinely great episode in this season and it’s again got Paul Dini involved in the writing.
Clayface is definitely “Batman” it’s just most live action adaptations lean heavily into realism and ignore all the fantastical elements of Batman which actually outweigh the realism. Hopefully James Gunn’s DCU will lean into the fantastical instead of the realism.
I know that it's been a while since you guys did Teen Titans, but Robin's grappling hook did make that same sound as well and Teen Titans was a couple years after this show.
I think this was the first TNBA episode I saw, it was definitely one of the first. It's so sad, so somber and nihilistic, and the animation was spectacular along with the voice acting.
Awesome animation.
The Kane family is as big as the Wayne family in Batman. Bruce’s mom Martha was a Kane.
the wayne's and the kane's. go figure. 😄
Katherine Kane aka Batwoman is Batman's cousin...
@@senecavanzandt4425 which is kinda weird cuz they dated back in the golden age.
This was definitely an emotional episode.
that first minute offered a rare look at what the blind wave guys are looking at this whole time. i don't think i'd ever seen it before. interesting. 😄
This is one of my favourite BTAS episodes
This is one of, if not THE DARKEST episode of Batman the animated series; and it’s one of my top 3 episodes. I hate the holiday anthology episode because it completely spoils this episode’s Clayface reveal/surprise.
Even though I think it's cool that the series introduces the second Robin like that, as it feels ambitiously complex and twisty narratively, I would never sacrifice the Clayface reveal in any way, so I'd definitely call placing it earlier a mistake. I don't think you hate the episode by the way, just its placement. Don't penalise the episode for something it didn't do!
Clayface returns, and boy was this heartbreaking! Poor Tim!
I wonder if they'll go into Batman Beyond after finishing this series?
Heartbreaking episode for Tim Drake. What a great story.
9:01 SURPRISE VADER FORCE UNLEADHED II!!!!
Aaron - "I feel we should have saved the 1st episode later"
People who watched this - "You Think?!"
This is such a great series to watch ❤ absolute favorite
SELINA KYLE (Catwomen) Helena's Mother, Was killed by Live.
Action clay face in the show birds of prey. That was Helena's origin story to become the huntress. It shows him in the later episodes in prison. Not the big fantastical version. You were probably expecting but considering it had an even lower budget than swamp thing for the time and age and quality of CGI relying heavily on just makeup. They did a very good job.
sees the girl on the intro
INSTANT satMOR cartoon ptsd of the episode 20 years ago
Imagine seeing this his as a kid when this first came out. I still remember how sad I was for poor Tim at the end.😅 I love shows that know how to introduce their young audience to just enough of reality in their fantasy.
Bob Kane was the creator of Batman.
My favorite episode of the new adventures ❤️ 🥲
They actually did do a live action clayface in the birds of prey 2002 tv show. It wasn’t very good. And neither was that show. 😂
I would love to see a movie quality clayface.
Let's Go Batman
Well, that was horrifying and sad.
Completely unrelated, but that tv they watch stuff on seems way too small for how far away they are lmao, or is it just me?
I think Clayface is an underrated Batman villain (or villains if you count the entire Mudpack) I would love to see the movies explore the more out-there antagonists.
theve done clayface in live action in the early 2000's birds of prey show and gotham
BTAS Saturday letsgo
in my fanfic annie is alive is name is claygirl or fantasies girl
Clayface showed up in Gotham.
Gotham did live action Clayface.
just as tragic as the death of clay face's butt in Harley Quinn.
Not sure how Robin's Murder claim holds up since Annie was technically a part of Clayface so is it murder or suicide? Robin did try to kill Clayface. I thought Calvin was gonna go Ship of Theseus with his Clayface & Annie analysis
Also, the fact she doesn’t legally exist; that would make it hard in most cities but in the cesspool that is Gotham? Mmm… very unlikely.
@@borjankosarac3645 yeah that’ll make things more difficult in the legal system
I assume that when he said that Clayface should be charged for murder he was just saying what he felt. I don't even know if the police new about Annie to charge him and even then she was just a part of him. Has Annie herself said, she is not even real. To Robin though, Clayface murdered Annie because he refused to accept that Annie wasn't real.
