Actually, that light of the DOM Troopers is the Screaming Nimbus weapon. Basically, it's a beam field that surrounds the machines, offering minor protection from beam weapons and damages enemies that get too close. In fact, they pass a ZAKU at close-range that they don't attack but is destroyed anyway. That's because it was caught in the Nimbus field.

I know, the Providence and the Zeong don't look the same. I was refering to the fact that they are similar to each other, beyond appearance. They're both prototype mobile suits for Newtypes. They're both the final mobile suit the protaganist battles in the series. They have similar abilities. And frankly, it gave me the impression that the Providence was modelled after the Zeong.

About the only thing I've come to respect in GSD: Partial homage to the original DOM Troopers...now with the ability not to die in their first couple battles.

You know the funny thing about the DOM Troopers are? They were originally designed alongside the ZAKU's when Terminal (Clyne Faction) covertly stepped in and had the DOM's scrapped in favor of the ZAKU's. Then Terminal made these three improved versions of the DOM's. Had they not stepped in, ZAFT would have been using the superior DOM's as their main MS, not the ZAKU.

I would also imagine that DOM would have not been feasible mass production wise and ZAKU units would be more cost-effective and more training involved in operating and maintaining above average tech.
DOM units with tech like this would have been more appropriate for special task units.

@DreamTraveller1 It's probably easy to see as such when the four out of five times UC series ends up pitting Earth Federation against Zeon, in one form or another.
Remakes are not uncommon. All things considered SEED could have been a lot worse and they DID get worse when SEED Destiny started to wrap up. SEED might be the lowest-scoring amongst longtime fans of Gundam, but it did its job well: An introduction to the Gundam metaverse for first-timers.

Generally speaking, Seed Destiny was more bad than good, imo. However, moments like these were so fucking awesome, and it's filled with them. Do they make up for the bad parts? It's so hard to say, for me.

I love Athrun, so I enjoyed it. Could it have been better? Most definitely 100%.
Will I rewatch it anyways? Yep.
Will I skip through a lot of it? Of course.
My biggest gripe is Athrun's role on the battlefield with the Minerva.
It feels like all he did with the savior was basically shoot some beams, then fly off in flight mode. Every time.
Maybe it was because he didnt want to kill anyone, but he has the same skill as Kira so he could have disarmed without killing...
Or it could have been to prop up Shinn's actions, either way, total waste.

True. But GS/GSD were actually made to be like a remake/tribute of the original MSG which is why the two are so similar. And it was mostly the cannon fodder that were in MS identical/similar to MSG MS. Frankly, I happy to see remakes and improved versions of some of the original MS. Because the animation of MSG was a little on the cheesy side. Plus the ZAKU's, DOM Troopers and other returning MS of GSD are actually improved versions of the originals.

I agree with with you. GS/GSD were made to be tributes to the original Gundam series. The improved versions of classic MS and characters. Though Char is better than Rau, but not by much. Hell, GSD was better than MSGZ and MSGZZ. Now those were more like insults to MSG than GS/GSD ever were.

i remember my dad got me a bootleg of 0079 back in the mid 80s, that was when i first started watching gundam
the subtitles were so bad... i remember my dad used to read them out to me, i still call the core fighter "nuclear fighter" and the zaku ZAK
but i remember Zeta being such a dissapointment, i watched it again recently and it was just as bland and dull.. i still love the MS IGLOO series for bringing everything that was GOOD about gundam back into the modern age
