When alkaline batteries leak they usually leak out of the negative terminal, so you should store them in an ammo box with the negative side up. Baking soda is not the right material to use for cleaning leakage of alkaline batteries, use white vinegar.
The same thing happened to my Kirkland batteries in the unopened container. Duracell and Kirkland (made by duracell) have been bad about this for several years now. I haven't had the same issues with Energizer (yet at least).

Not really, I'm still using them. The amazon basics batteries come wrapped in 4pks even in bulk, so that is one option. Perhaps using a vacuum sealer in 4pk sizes or similar. I'll try to remember to post the model numbers on them.
