Our first album (The Lost Words: Spell Songs - 2019) concludes with The Lost Words Blessing. It is offered both in hope and light, and in grief for the losses and dark times yet to come. We are proud and delighted to share this beautiful video of the creative journey. Filmed by Elly Lucas Photography and edited by Ben Davis of Dot + Diode.
Karine Polwart suggested the idea of a blessing that borrows images and phrases from many of The Lost Words spells by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris (Bluebell, Dandelion, Fern, Heather, Heron, Kingfisher, Lark, Otter, Raven and Starling), as well as from new spells (Goldfinch and Grey Seal). The form is inspired by blessings in Scottish Gaelic, particularly from a beautiful collection of charms and incantations called Carmina Gadelica.
The Lost Words Blessing
Enter the wild with care, my love
And speak the things you see
Let new names take and root and thrive and grow
And even as you travel far from heather, crag and river
May you like the little fisher, set the stream alight with glitter
May you enter now as otter without falter into water
Look to the sky with care, my love
And speak the things you see
Let new names take and root and thrive and grow
And even as you journey on past dying stars exploding
Like the gilded one in flight, leave your little gifts of light
And in the dead of night my darling, find the gleaming eye of starling
Like the little aviator, sing your heart to all dark matter
Walk through the world with care, my love
And sing the things you see
Let new names take and root and thrive and grow
And even as you stumble through machair sands eroding
Let the fern unfurl your grieving, let the heron still your breathing
Let the selkie swim you deeper, oh my little silver-seeker
Even as the hour grows bleaker, be the singer and the speaker
And in city and in forest, let the larks become your chorus
And when every hope is gone, let the raven call you home

May we meet again ❤️❤️❤️
This cracked open my heart. Thank you for your words @Mindy
This is the song for my beloved son Alex who died a year ago. A man who loved the little creatures so dear. The most moving song I know, thank you for this.
I cry my arse off every time I listen to this song. Thank you so much for helping me reach the depths of my grief.
The emotion and tears start with "Enter the wild with care my love .." , then build and build, until you don't think you have any more of yourself to give. And then the song hits you with "And when every hope is gone, let the raven call you home."
Oh my God yes. This really hit me like a ton of bricks.
I wept when I first heard this on Scotland Outdoors pod last year which feels like a lifetime ago and I still weep when I hear it today. The unbearable beauty of this song connects deep within my soul. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for bringing this miracle into the world.
I couldn't agree more! Well said. It's just achingly beautiful. And so wonderful to see the makers making. The crafter's crafting. The doers doing. The connection between these beautiful souls is what is transmitted
This is one of the most BEAUTOFUL and POWERFUL songs I have ever heard. I literally feel this in my bones. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!
Well said! Agreed
30/8/2023 7.15 p.m. this is the song of nature, the earth and connects us to it in the ancient way yet, it is modern. It is the most beautiful song I have ever heard.
We need this magic more than ever in these times.
To those who have sent this out, words and music, in a blessing, may it return to you a thousand fold, with rose petals upon your heads.
We've been playing this as our lullaby for our kids for the last month or so... They love it and it feels like a benediction over them. Gorgeous song, thank you. (Four times through and they're asleep. ❤️)
you have just read my mind
Like many people, I also had this song played at my mother's funeral. She loved nature, was a vegan for decades, she would be sad to know that these beautiful words are lost to generations to come xx
This song (recording) must be played at any memorial service held for me. (I'm seventy and so far, in reasonably good shape for a man my age.) As others (below/above) have stated, this really strikes a "chord" with me. I'm a retired music teacher (voice/choir) and also a lover of photography, in particular bird photography. The lyrics speak to me on different levels. Thanks for sharing this.
Maybe add TO MY OLD BROWN EARTH, Pete Seeger. And/or Well May the World Go. Well may YOU (and I, newly 76) go!))
@@rickharlan6780 Thanks for the heads up. I'll give them a listen.
The most beautiful song of this age. I cry everytime for our great loss defending our homelands
This stopped me dead in my tracks. It's so utterly gorgeous, I feel it inside me. Tears are rolling down my cheeks.
Me too...I listened to it 6 times over when I first heard it...and cried each time!
Just as lost as I am.
:-)

I’ve seized this as my heartbeat during these uncertain times. It feels safe. This song is like home. ❤️
Absolutely beautiful. Brings tears every time I listen.
I had this beautiful song played at mums funeral. It fitted my mum perfectly, she was a free spirit who loved nature and would be bereft at the idea of these words being lost to future generations.
Oh, what a perfect farewell song for my dear friend who's spirit we relesed today..thank you...
I think I've never grieved so deeply, or cried so freely, at the heartbreaking pain of the losses this world endures, as I do at this moment
I hope you're still expressing your feelings and holding up now, too, as the world grieves in different ways.
And now, as we see crimes against humanity
We who love strangers will always shine and make our earth a beautiful place to share
Love is everything
❤️
We played this as the soundtrack to the slideshow at the crematorium after my mum's requiem mass this year....she had loved listening to it in her last months. It was perfect...almost every single person at the service asked what the beautiful music was. Thank you Lost Words. ❤
This makes emotions boil over, but instead of putting out the flame, it feeds it. Thank you!
Well said. Thank you for helping me make sense of my overcome-ness
This is the closest feeling of a warm hug in the middle of this crazy COVID 19 pandemia time ...
Thank you and much love to all the artist , musicians and people involved in the Art In general . So needed , ALWAYS !
The ability to create such a beautiful performance as this leaves me speechless. Whenever I hear this song emotion overflows ❤️
There are very few things that can move me to tears within seconds.
This is one of them.
This is so amazing. I was looking for a song to sing for a blessing to my son at a gathering of the men in his life before his wedding and this was the first thing I came across when I searched, "Blessing songs." It couldn't be more ideal, for many reasons not the least of which is my Scottish heritage and the many days and weeks my son and I have spent in nature together. I humbly made a few changes to the last verse to make it a little more forward looking and hopeful without losing the gist. I offer changes here in case anyone else would like to see them. Thanks so much for such a beautiful song:
Walk through the world with care, my love
And sing the things you see
Let new names take and root and thrive and grow
And even if you stumble through machair sands eroding
Let the fern unfurl your grieving, let the heron still your breathing
Let the selkie swim you deeper, oh my little silver-seeker
Even if the hour grows bleaker, be the singer and the speaker
And in city and in forest, let the larks become your chorus
And if your strength is waning, let the raven call you home
This song, is an outstanding work by very talented artists, it takes me to the very core of my emotions on the beauty of the world we live in. And the feeling of the short time we get to experience nature before passing. What an incredibly touching work of art.
One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Thank you
I think it’s the best thing I have ever heard. Thank you so much, I can’t really find the words to say what it means to me.
I listen to this when I’m struggling. It’s so beautiful.
I am reverberating in the deepest way possible. Thank you thank you thank you. Yes. More. Please. ❤️
So perfectly poignant - absolutely breaks the heart wide open! May each tear shed by each listener here be another prayer for healing our wounded world. Agaya and ubuntu to all!

Just heard this on BBC Radio 4's "Desert Island Discs" with Robert Macfarlane. I shall be weeping for days.

Same here..in tears
Blessings on the wonderful people who have created this magic. I pray that this marks a turning point in consciousness and that those who need to hear this are moved to tears as I and many others have been. I have been so depressed recently, and these spells have gently reached right into the centre of my heart. Peace..
So beautiful and moving, such a gentle celebration ❤️ thank you … ‘sing your heart to all dark matter …O my little silver seeker’ ❤️✨🌿
The more I listen the more I find..it played over in my mind as I went to sleep with such sweet imagery
Let it capture my heart beating
Slip the soul from dullest seating
Like the seed at autumn falling
And the lonely blackbird calling ...
I could bathe in this
This is a beautiful addition!

This song has touched my heart and soul so deeply, it makes me cry every time I listen to it, as it flows with all its beauty and truth through my being...
This is the one song that I want to have played at my funeral, many many years from now.
Thank you so much!
touched beyond comment for the land, thank you
This is so beautiful. When I first saw it, I clicked the link a little too enthusiastically and managed to open at least three versions which began to play simultaneously, so the second line joined the first, and then the third, and it overlaid like that on and on. It was a rather wonderful effect, and so perfect it took me the whole song to work out it wasn't what you'd intended.
I did the same thing!!
that's called canon
Glorious! I wish I could give this more than a single thumbs up. I tried!! I'm still thumbing it up in my heart.💖
I have a playlist of songs for end of life and this will definitely be played at my own funeral 🙏
Just beautiful.
I am glad to find that I am not the only soul moved to tears whenever I hear this song, but in such a beautiful way that I want to hear it over again once it reaches the end.

Completely magical and wonderful and sad and hopeful and important and all the things.
I keep coming back to this song. I think it is the quality of the voices as well as the words that envelop me with a warm loving feeling. Thank you Robert Macfarlane, I too heard it first on Desert Island Discs.

Utterly gorgeous - thank you
Saw the beautiful Lost Words exhibition at Nymans NT - the exquisite paintings and lyrical poems. Delightful to hear (linked from Julie Fowlis) and see the connection with the Lakes too!
A huge part of my religious practice is spirit work, and there's a specific spirit who's been with me since before I even knew he was there. This song sounds exactly like the things he would say to me. Words don't even really do it justice. It just sounds like reassurance, his guidance and blessing. It calls me back to roots long before I was even so much as conceived, and speaks such spiritual significance to me that I don't think I could ever quite describe it. I am, in short, absolutely blessed to have this song, the memories, and the spirit with whom I associate it in my life.
This is appsolotly a Beautiful song it hit me right in my heart 💜
Wow, this goes straight to the heart. Thank you!
