  • Here's a mini-finale of the 1987 Jerry Lewis Telethon. This was the time in the shows history since 1973 where the $1 dollar more goal was raised with over 90 to go in the telecast, allowing for a lot of fun, pride and pure entertainment.
I've included the $1 more tymp, a speech by Jerry, Sammy Davis Jr. opening the final hour, a touching moment when he's interrupted by a tympani, Bob Sampson's final few words that year and the last part of the duet that Jerry & Sammy sing to close the show. Jerry can't contain his thrill - watch!!

Sammy Davis Jr was emotional because he UNDERSTOOD that his five minutes on stage raised a TON of money for a worthy cause. He saw it in real time.

This was an annual event that made you proud to be an American---we came together to celebrate our icons of entertainment and give as a nation to support a cause. GREAT MEMORIES.

This segment from '87 has to be the 2nd greatest moment in the telethon's history, next to the reunion with Dean. And I agree with the other posts in this group. It didn't matter that Jerry was too old or unappealing, it was still HIS show, for 45 YEARS!! There's a reason they named the damn thing after him. He raised $2.5B for MDA and the way they tossed him out like a bag of garbage was totally unacceptable... and unforgiving!!

Jerry should have left around 1999. Most of "The Love Network" only aired parts of the show after this time.

@@johnsjohnson448 My local affiliate ceased airing the telethon coverage after 1998 because the decision was made to not broadcast 24 hours a day in early 1999 as a cost-cutting measure. The station resumed airing the telethon in 2003 to commemorate their 50th anniversary on the air.

...the most successful Telethon ever: the earliest time that the previous year's total was broken, the 5 million dollar final difference from the previous year; that this difference was not due to an increase in the size of the LOVE network, as in the early 1970's, and the best talent on television that year (including Sammy Davis Jr's best performances ever) ; sheer perfection; Bravo, Jerry!

One single entertainer A purpose and commitment to patient care produced the finest live television event for over 50 years. M D A will go on to serve its client and Their families. The telethons(good & not so good) are gone now, opting for the 19 dollar a month Concept. As we honor the of the life, and passing of Jerry Lewis, August 20th 2017.
I will Never Forget the hours of pleasure i spent watching Television with a purpose.
I also will Hate M D A Shabby way he was removed as National Chairman.
In The words of Jerry Lewis " for those who understand no explanation is necessary "
For those who do not No Explanation will suffice.

Jerry was wonderful. He made so much money for MDA and this how they treat him. His love for his "kids" young and old were very sincere. There will never be another Jerry Lewis and Ed McMahon Sammy Davis Jr. Or a Frank Sinatra. They contributed their time for this cause. May they all walk on. God Bless you all.

Also to his dieing day it was never important to him to let the public know why he choose to make his life work. It was so important to him clear back to the time to his Dean and Jerry days. It was so great when Dean choose the reunion to take place on the telethon. Come to think about it I bet Dean probably know why Jerry did this all those years, he took it to his grave too. Never be another person who choose to make a show like this for a personal reason, only know to themselves. No matter what you think about him as a person.... He sure did all he could to help this cause... RIP Jerry
