I think this is my favorite Magicycle overall. I've come to like the 20 inch tires (feels more zippy) plus I love the step through, hydraulic brakes. What a nice bike.
The diff in speed going up the hill could be because the larger wheels on the cruiser gives you more momentum as you approach the summit. I'd be curious to see the diff in speed if Mrs Right was riding it at the hill.
You should see the hills near me. So steep and short run up. I am lucky to get up them at all. I have to really down shift. This is a nice bike for sure.

Russ, you are amazing and so thorough on everything, and I enjoy and get so much out of your comments. i bought a discount Schwinn ebike, and just learning to ride it, but one day may get the cadillac that you rode the other day, that was the Electric heavy bike, with the wood chain guard. i loved that one too, with all the accessories too just like you did. I am older than you, and have a few difficulties, but all is good, and would love to have someone like you to ride with too. When younger about 25 or more years ago, rode 150 miles per week and loved it. Unfortunately even back then, drivers caused me to have several accidents, by their stupidity, and gave it up until now. I have a great place to ride, on the Natchez Trace, that is wonderful, and not many hills either. Watch most of your videos, and love all of them. Keep up the good work, and enjoy riding like i use to . I will again, and very soon. Gary
Excellent test ride and information on the exact bike that I’ve ordered and waiting for. I’m still riding my Cruiser to work and it’s starting to get chilly here in North Florida (60’s). I plan on riding through the winter months, so just as a suggestion for cold weather riding, I use a Full Face, MTB Helmet over a Balaclava. I also wear a Gortex Running Suit over layered clothing. It’s important to block the wind. Finally, either high top sneakers or boots for my feet. I find this combination works well for me. If you can afford a “Riding Suit”, I would recommend the Joe Rocket outfit that I used in Upstate New York during the winter when I road motorcycles. Ride Safe!

The center of gravity should be lower with a 20" tire plus you don't have as far to fall when you do eventually wipe out. I'm 65 and growing up as a kid I had a stingray bike with the bananas seat, monkey bars and 5 speed loved that bike. I have a scooter and looking at the ebikes now I really appreciate your reviews Russ.
Great review one point you hit full throttle when you hit the bridge first time. the bike really moves and after months of watching reviews I have decided on the ocelot pro even if only does 13 mph its plenty fast for me at 145 lbs
Love the look, but i think its better fit for shorter people, even though its rated for up to around 6 foot tall humans, and i do not need knobby tires, but the design and features are fantastic !
I have a Radcity 5 plus. The looks of the bike is important to me. Of course I want pedal assist, but I want the bike to look like a traditional sleek bike. I constantly hear people let me how cool my bike looks. OK, I am an old (75), bald, fat guy but I am vain sometimes.

I like the idea of controlling the individual power settings. I also like the idea that the bike is tailored for people of shorter stature. Most bikes appear to be tailored for 6 foot weight lifters.
Russ: I know you're extremely busy and expect to take some time off to convalesce from a _____ shot. If and when you have the time, could you try doing that hill-climb test again with the Ocelot Pro set at 22A and compare that against the Cruiser set at its max setting? Using the default 15A setting handcuffs the motor. To unleash the full 96nM power that it is capable of, it needs to be fed more amps.

Russ: Reference your comments on changing the chainring (time 33:05 on the video) to reduce ghost pedaling. Your Cruiser had a stock 42T chainring, so upgrading it to 52T was a whole level up. The Ocelot Pro comes with a 48T chainring, an upgrade to 52T would be an incremental improvement. Questions: 1. Have you had any issues so far with ghost pedaling on the Ocelot Pro? If so, at what speeds does the issue present itself? (Anecdotal reports on the Cruiser performance was that ghost pedaling became a problem somewhere around 25 mph.) 2. Based on your experience on upgrading the Cruiser from 42T to 52T, what do you think about upgrading the Ocelot Pro from 48T to 52T? Would you expect the improvement to be worth the effort needed to make the upgrade?
Yes, you will get ghost pedaling at around the 20 mph and over range if you pedal slowly. If you put the effort in (pedaling a bit faster), you don't notice it until a couple of miles over 20 mph. Remember that if you upgrade your chainring, you void your warranty. Something to think about before making any kind of major change. Based on a 48T to 52T, it probably would not be much of a difference, although it would be some.

Nice review Russ. Hey, I have a Dost Drop Chain, which has a 750W Bafang G340 (BBS02) and uses a 48v 14ah battery. This is my third bike. I am finding that 14ah battery is kinda pathetic for distance riding. And, I **do** have a 48v 20ah battery that came with my Electric Eco Tad SX recumbent trike. If I can get that larger battery working on my Dost, I could get considerably more distance out of it, and it would sit nicely on the rear carrier. Do you think it's possible? Do you know what I would have to do to get it working with the Dost and my Bafang mid-drive? It would be super-awesome if I could use both batteries and just switch over to the other when one runs out. Appreciate any thoughts. 😁
Well, I did something similar to my Rad Rover 5, where I put a second triangle battery on the rear rack. I had to rewire the bike to do it though. The controller needed to change its connector from Rad's battery cradle connector to an XT90 connector and then each of the two triangle batteries that I use were outfitted with XT90 connectors. I put an XT90 connector "extension cord"on the bike so that one battery could stay on the rear rack and I just switch out the connectors when the other battery exhausts. I do not run my batteries in parallel like some people do. I feel it is safer to just run one battery at a time. If you want to see how to do something like this, watch this video from Stan The Reservoir Rat. I followed his instructions to make my changes. I plan to do a similar thing with the Area 13 Blackbird bike. ua-cam.com/video/Z_SQ28Q3Hu4/v-deo.html. On that bike, an XT-60 connector is used on the bike's original battery and controller. All I need to do is make the extension cable with one end using the XT60 and the other end using an XT90. This way, I can use the same triangle battery that I use on the RAD Rover 5 with the Area 13 Blackbird.

If you put the bike on PAS 0, it essentially turns off all power to the bike. Of course a very small amount of power is used to power the meter but nothing goes to the motor. Or, just don’t turn on the bike at all and ride it.
@@RussIsRight I'm coming at it from the perspective of possible theft. If they get through the locks, can they just turn the controller on and zip off at 28mph? Like, the Lectric has a passcode on it, so even if they steal it they still can't ride it with power. Some bikes have a way to turn the key on the battery so the battery is Off even while it's in the bike. I was wondering if Magicycle had anything like that. Or if you know of any aftermarket add-on that will do that.
The password setting won’t stop someone from stealing the bike or the battery. They just can’t ride it with battery help. And, if you forget the password yourself, you won’t be able to ride it either. There is no way to factory reset it. It would require you to buy a new display screen to start riding it again. Something to remember.
Saw the maximum motor output setting is only 90% when you select 9 levels of assist rather than 96% with 7 levels of assist. Perhaps that is also why the Ocelot Pro doesn’t maintain as high a speed up the hill as the Cruiser with the same 96Nm motor?
No. I tested both with throttle only. The throttle gives full maximum speed regardless of its PAS setting. Plus my test was the Ocelot Pro versus the standard Cruiser, not the cruiser pro. The Standard Cruiser has 86nm of torque.
Russ, do you think this bike would fit in an SUV without removing front tire? Very nice ride and great looking bike. Also, I would guess the Cruiser Pro wouldn't fit in very well. Thanks for excellent analysis on these bikes.
If your rear seats fold down, you could probably fit one in an SUV. But it is rather heavy of course. And, you could always take the front wheel off to give you more space when putting it in, but then you would need to reinstall the wheel afterwards.
Can you make a detailed video on setting up the peddle assist 1-9. I’m waiting on one for my wife and definitely have to setup the pedal assist and power.
The design minimizes risk of water intrusion when it rains. It also makes it easier to remove the battery. (Imagine how difficult it would be to extract the battery from a tight compartment if it were loaded from the top!)
Been waiting quite a while for the "Russ" commentary on MC Ocelot.👍 A bit disappointed with the hill results 🤔 Many of the direct-to-consumer brands (Himiway, Rad, Bolton/13, Ariel) have similar performance and top speeds for 26-in cruisers at up to 35-40 mph when unlocked. My conclusion is that the 96 NM Cruiser Pro on 26-in tires SHOULD be the king of the Chicago Hill fleet. The 20's are more nimble for sure, but NO way to be as smooth over the bumps and debris with a lower volume of air in the tires vs 26-in versions at the same PSI. Curious...did you have the full 110 lb version on the test originally? Basket, recorder, water bottle, tool bag, spare parts,2nd battery, etc...Chinese food. Haha. 🚴
Someone mentioned that if the controller were tweaked to a higher current setting, it could make a difference in the performance. Yes, I think it probably would, but I tested it as it comes from the factory. The heavy 110 lb version of the Rad Rover 5 could only do 9 mph with that weight if it was full throttle AND pedaled.

Hello Russ & Friends, I checked the tire pressure on the Ocelot-Pro yesterday and found 10 psi on the Front and 7 psi on the Rear, I inflated both to 24 psi. I'll wager you fly up your "Speed Test Hill" faster than 13 mph. 1) I have a question about accessories, the Magicycle mirrors I bought do not reach out like they would on my beach cruiser handlebars. does anyone know of an extension that may be offered so I'm not looking at my own shoulder? 2) Handlebar extension that I bought needs to have longer "attachment brackets" in order to clear the bend in the odd shaped handlebars. Any good ideas on how to circumvent this design flaw? 3) Russ, I have read, re-read & read the book again about the Display Menu, is there a way to ZERO the TRIP meter? I bought this for my wife, can you tell me in writing how you changed the speed / percentages because she is a new rider, I don't want her to get hurt. Watch my second review of the Cruiser. I go over the menu there. It's the same for the Ocelot Pro is you want to use a 1-7 setting. Russ do you have to check all the bolts on new bikes for tightening? I just saw a video saying they are loose and no instructions on that. Getting mine delivered on Friday! I am a bit worried about set up and care. We don't have ebike shops in our rural area.
I always check the bolts, but haven't had many that did not have them tight. I think the Area 13 Blackbird had the crank arms a bit loose, most likely from shipping. It doesn't hurt to check that and to be sure the front hub is tightened as well as the rear axle. Never had a loose rear axle though. The front quick release to the front wheel could loosen up after riding a long time though... I had that happen on the Rad Rover 5 after about 1000 miles or riding... so nothing is a sure thing. Always check every now and then.
You should check all nuts and bolts for proper tightness. And you should DOUBLE-CHECK all the nuts and bolts that you personally install. You should check all levers for proper adjustment. You should check the drive chain/chainring/gear cassette/derailleur for alignment, smooth (quiet) engagement when shifting, adequate slack, and properly oiled. You should check all wiring for intermittent connections (especially at pinch points that may have been created by parts shifting within the packing crate during shipping). You should check tires for proper inflation. Check all spokes for any damage. Check all spoke nuts for tightness. Check brake disks for alignment and cleanliness. Check brake calipers for proper clearance. Spin tires to ensure freewheel ... there should be no scratching, scraping, or other extraneous noises. * * * * * Do a search for "magicycle assembly instructions". You will find dozens of UA-cam videos to choose from. If you run into any problems with assembly, you can probably find a fix in one or more of these generic videos. You have the controller set to 15amp Max versus the stock 20amp output. Change it back and you'll get a new king of the hill

I am thinking of buying the Ocelot. I have an Anioki which has a 48x20a battery in that. I like the looks and the 52 volt battery.

I plan to do a similar thing with the Area 13 Blackbird bike. ua-cam.com/video/Z_SQ28Q3Hu4/v-deo.html. On that bike, an XT-60 connector is used on the bike's original battery and controller. All I need to do is make the extension cable with one end using the XT60 and the other end using an XT90. This way, I can use the same triangle battery that I use on the RAD Rover 5 with the Area 13 Blackbird.

Russ is there a way to turn the battery/controller off while it's in the bike? A key turn, a passcode, anything?
If you put the bike on PAS 0, it essentially turns off all power to the bike. Of course a very small amount of power is used to power the meter but nothing goes to the motor. Or, just don’t turn on the bike at all and ride it.
@@RussIsRight I'm coming at it from the perspective of possible theft. If they get through the locks, can they just turn the controller on and zip off at 28mph?
Like, the Lectric has a passcode on it, so even if they steal it they still can't ride it with power. Some bikes have a way to turn the key on the battery so the battery is Off even while it's in the bike. I was wondering if Magicycle had anything like that. Or if you know of any aftermarket add-on that will do that.
No, there is no way to lock it. You would need to take the battery off if you don’t want it to ride off when being stolen.
I do not have my Ocelot Pro yet, but I know I saw something about being able to set a passcode. But that came with a strong warning to NOT forget it.
The password setting won’t stop someone from stealing the bike or the battery. They just can’t ride it with battery help. And, if you forget the password yourself, you won’t be able to ride it either. There is no way to factory reset it. It would require you to buy a new display screen to start riding it again. Something to remember.
Saw the maximum motor output setting is only 90% when you select 9 levels of assist rather than 96% with 7 levels of assist. Perhaps that is also why the Ocelot Pro doesn’t maintain as high a speed up the hill as the Cruiser with the same 96Nm motor?
No. I tested both with throttle only. The throttle gives full maximum speed regardless of its PAS setting. Plus my test was the Ocelot Pro versus the standard Cruiser, not the cruiser pro. The Standard Cruiser has 86nm of torque.
Russ, do you think this bike would fit in an SUV without removing front tire? Very nice ride and great looking bike. Also, I would guess the Cruiser Pro wouldn't fit in very well. Thanks for excellent analysis on these bikes.
If your rear seats fold down, you could probably fit one in an SUV. But it is rather heavy of course. And, you could always take the front wheel off to give you more space when putting it in, but then you would need to reinstall the wheel afterwards.

Still pretty powerful for a folding bike. Many only have a 500 watt and not much torque.

I’m leery of a under-mount battery. Seems there’s only a thumb turn knob to latch the compartment closure. Top mount would feel much better.
It's likely a design thing to make the battery less visible. But the lock is very strong.
The design minimizes risk of water intrusion when it rains. It also makes it easier to remove the battery. (Imagine how difficult it would be to extract the battery from a tight compartment if it were loaded from the top!)

Been waiting quite a while for the "Russ" commentary on MC Ocelot.👍 A bit disappointed with the hill results 🤔 Many of the direct-to-consumer brands (Himiway, Rad, Bolton/13, Ariel) have similar performance and top speeds for 26-in cruisers at up to 35-40 mph when unlocked. My conclusion is that the 96 NM Cruiser Pro on 26-in tires SHOULD be the king of the Chicago Hill fleet. The 20's are more nimble for sure, but NO way to be as smooth over the bumps and debris with a lower volume of air in the tires vs 26-in versions at the same PSI. Curious...did you have the full 110 lb version on the test originally? Basket, recorder, water bottle, tool bag, spare parts,2nd battery, etc...Chinese food. Haha. 🚴
Someone mentioned that if the controller were tweaked to a higher current setting, it could make a difference in the performance. Yes, I think it probably would, but I tested it as it comes from the factory. The heavy 110 lb version of the Rad Rover 5 could only do 9 mph with that weight if it was full throttle AND pedaled.

Is the Ocelot Pro easier to mount and dismount than you other bikes? I have a problem getting on most bikes due to knee replacements and being old.

Hello Russ & Friends, I checked the tire pressure on the Ocelot-Pro yesterday and found 10 psi on the Front and 7 psi on the Rear, I inflated both to 24 psi.
I'll wager you fly up your "Speed Test Hill" faster than 13 mph.
1) I have a question about accessories, the Magicycle mirrors I bought do not reach out like they would on my beach cruiser handlebars. does anyone know of an extension that may be offered so I'm not looking at my own shoulder?
2) Handlebar extension that I bought needs to have longer "attachment brackets" in order to clear the bend in the odd shaped handlebars. Any good ideas on how to circumvent this design flaw?
3) Russ, I have read, re-read & read the book again about the Display Menu, is there a way to ZERO the TRIP meter?

Watch my second review of the Cruiser. I go over the menu there. It's the same for the Ocelot Pro is you want to use a 1-7 setting. Russ do you have to check all the bolts on new bikes for tightening? I just saw a video saying they are loose and no instructions on that. Getting mine delivered on Friday! I am a bit worried about set up and care. We don't have ebike shops in our rural area.
I always check the bolts, but haven't had many that did not have them tight. I think the Area 13 Blackbird had the crank arms a bit loose, most likely from shipping. It doesn't hurt to check that and to be sure the front hub is tightened as well as the rear axle. Never had a loose rear axle though. The front quick release to the front wheel could loosen up after riding a long time though... I had that happen on the Rad Rover 5 after about 1000 miles or riding... so nothing is a sure thing. Always check every now and then.
You should check all nuts and bolts for proper tightness. And you should DOUBLE-CHECK all the nuts and bolts that you personally install.
You should check all levers for proper adjustment.
You should check the drive chain/chainring/gear cassette/derailleur for alignment, smooth (quiet) engagement when shifting, adequate slack, and properly oiled.
You should check all wiring for intermittent connections (especially at pinch points that may have been created by parts shifting within the packing crate during shipping).
You should check tires for proper inflation. Check all spokes for any damage. Check all spoke nuts for tightness.
Check brake disks for alignment and cleanliness. Check brake calipers for proper clearance. Spin tires to ensure freewheel ... there should be no scratching, scraping, or other extraneous noises.

Do a search for "magicycle assembly instructions". You will find dozens of UA-cam videos to choose from. If you run into any problems with assembly, you can probably find a fix in one or more of these generic videos.
There is only one that I could find that applies to the Ocelot Pro:

I am a heavy rider at 255 lbs, but I got 35 miles on the Ocelot Pro pedaling and throttling as I normally do. Not bad!

Another free bike sent out for a review is why they are so expensive.
