(Because chaos sims are chaos sims, and it's hard to believe a PC is anything but psychotic and entirely apathetic. They'd laugh watching an old lady burn to death!) GTA IV and V, are ludonarrative nightmares, where *only* Trevor can save the narrative from the player's antics. What did I just watch? XD Anyway, I know this will sound cheesy and all, but I love cheese! Yeah, I love all of the saints row games for what they are, and equally! ^-^
I personally prefer saints row 2 as it has a nicer map in my opinion, it has ai planes which are amazing to mess around with as they land and take off, destructable trains, a large prison to walk through, many houses largly customizable unlike saints roow 3 and 4 and u can buy a lighthouse! Dont even get me started on the cheats which LARGLY beats the other games cheats. I mainly love to go on the beach beside the air port activate evil cars and low gravity and they go flying over you and u must try not to get hit. And u can go inside the airport and there are many more vehicles inculding cars, bikes, boats and planes but sadly no vtols or tanks. There only downside.
I’m new in the series and already bought 2, The Third, Re- elected, and Agents Of Mayhem. I own PS consoles, I would’ve get 1... but playing IV for me into getting everything, I’m currently halfway into IV and I love it!!! I get old fans don’t like it, but that happens in every franchise when they change, in Assassin’s Creed is the same story. Well, it doesn’t happen in Nintendo games, because they always change the formula and people are used to change, but whatever. I fucking love the game, and if it was another GTA clone, I wouldn’t get into this at this level of buying every single game before even finish the one I got in a sale.

Gearoid Molyneux Actually, quite the contrary. After playing Saints Row 3 and 4, I feel like 1 ans 2 are the less favorable titles of the franchise. Sure, they each had a better map and "deeper" story, but everything for me felt so dull. I enjoyed the liveliness of 3 and 4 far more. It's a matter of personal preference. In a way, I'm the guy that Flippy just parodied. I feel as though the first two installments were far too melodramatic and that they did not live up to the standards of the image they were trying to evoke. On the other hand, I feel as though, while being much simpler and absurd, Saints Row 3 and 4 ended up being far more captivating as a whole with the better gameplay and...dare I say it? Sharp writing. The story made no attempt to take itself 100% seriously, and if Classic Saints Row fans would just put their fucking bias aside, they would at least be able to appreciate it for what it is. It's an over-the-top sci-fi parody that does a great job incorporating character actions and interactions that ultimately end up producing an entertaining experience. It perfectly executes the style that the writers were trying to establish. So for me, it's not about which story is deeper or even better by the direct definition of the word; it's about which story better conveys the writer's conceptual goal. Story aside, the gameplay of Saints Row 3 and 4 are undeniably better even by the direct definition of the word. The controls and everything are in fact far more fluid, and that ends up making the player feel more involved with his/her character. Sure, as a result, we end up with a far shittier map, but honestly, the map is a backdrop. What really matters is what you do in that environment rather than what you observe in it. What people fail to understand is that game developing requires a distinct balance of resources. The development staff is struck with the dilemma on how to spend them. "Should we spend our resources on the game itself or the environment as a whole?" If you have an amazing map, chances are you won't have the resources to make solid gameplay. Just look at EVERY free-roam game in history. The bigger the map, the shittier the gameplay. Saints Row 3 and 4 are some of the only titles in the genre that actually turn that formula around, as far as I'm aware. For that, I respect both games. To be perfectly honest, the only thing that Saints Row 2 actually wins on beyond any shadow of a doubt is the map itself. Everything else about the game feels so inferior. The character customization is really nothing special aside from the clothing options. The gameplay is...well...just another piss-poor free-roam game. The writing-style's quality is strictly up to personal preference. I feel as though most fans flock to Saints Row 2 solely for the feeling of appearing "retro." That, or their opinion stems from nothing other than nostalgia-bias. (which for FUCK'S SAKE is a huge problem with a majority of humanity's judgement process. It's so unbelievably illogical for anyone to determine quality solely over which provided more memories, yet it's a common and widely accepted train of thought that really ought to be extinguished.) Still, this is just my interpretation, my personal opinion. There are still plenty of fans who have their own legitimate reasons as to why they prefer the previous titles, and I cannot fault them for that. (It's just the people who have no real logic behind their thoughts that get me wound up.) With that, I am just giving my own reasons as to why the original poster as well as myself and thousands of other fans may prefer the more recent installments to the franchise. I expect the opposing fanbase not to fault us for such.

While I do agree that Saints Row 3 and 4 do not fit well with the tone of 1 and 2, I was never a fan of the first two to begin with. I vastly prefer 3 and 4 as their own individual games. You're right. Perhaps Volition should write each era as their own individual canon with references to the other.
I don't really like the super power type things. I haven't bothered wasting my money on Saints Row 4 cause I know I won't like it. Honestly, if they remastered Saints Row 2 for next gen, I'd really like it.

In all seriousness I hated Saints Row 4 and I feel like I wasted money when I pre-ordered saints row the third, it felt like a reskinned shittier version of red faction guerilla. I like the way it plays in the newer ones but they could've been executed better.

I actually agree with everything here. The only things about 2 that I find better are more clothing options and enemies don't completely disappear after territorial defeat. Everything else about the later games was better. If you want a serious game, get off you're needy ass high horse, and go play Sleeping Dogs or GTAV. Gameplay > everything else I will also say SR4's idea for heat sucked too. I love the alien onslaugh, but the concept of the wardens annoyed me. Cause shit tons of destruction and kill aliens > warden shows up > all other enemy units go poof > heat completely dies when warden is destroyed. ...NO! In all honesty, I think SR3 was my favorite of the series. The super powers are alright, but the mech is still easily the best part about SR4.

but playing IV for me into getting everything, I’m currently halfway into IV and I love it!!! I get old fans don’t like it, but that happens in every franchise when they change, in Assassin’s Creed is the same story. Well, it doesn’t happen in Nintendo games, because they always change the formula and people are used to change, but whatever.

Gearoid Molyneux Actually, quite the contrary. After playing Saints Row 3 and 4, I feel like 1 ans 2 are the less favorable titles of the franchise. Sure, they each had a better map and "deeper" story, but everything for me felt so dull. I enjoyed the liveliness of 3 and 4 far more. It's a matter of personal preference. In a way, I'm the guy that Flippy just parodied. I feel as though the first two installments were far too melodramatic and that they did not live up to the standards of the image they were trying to evoke.
On the other hand, I feel as though, while being much simpler and absurd, Saints Row 3 and 4 ended up being far more captivating as a whole with the better gameplay and...dare I say it? Sharp writing. The story made no attempt to take itself 100% seriously, and if Classic Saints Row fans would just put their fucking bias aside, they would at least be able to appreciate it for what it is. It's an over-the-top sci-fi parody that does a great job incorporating character actions and interactions that ultimately end up producing an entertaining experience. It perfectly executes the style that the writers were trying to establish. So for me, it's not about which story is deeper or even better by the direct definition of the word; it's about which story better conveys the writer's conceptual goal.
Story aside, the gameplay of Saints Row 3 and 4 are undeniably better even by the direct definition of the word. The controls and everything are in fact far more fluid, and that ends up making the player feel more involved with his/her character. Sure, as a result, we end up with a far shittier map, but honestly, the map is a backdrop. What really matters is what you do in that environment rather than what you observe in it. What people fail to understand is that game developing requires a distinct balance of resources. The development staff is struck with the dilemma on how to spend them. "Should we spend our resources on the game itself or the environment as a whole?" If you have an amazing map, chances are you won't have the resources to make solid gameplay. Just look at EVERY free-roam game in history. The bigger the map, the shittier the gameplay. Saints Row 3 and 4 are some of the only titles in the genre that actually turn that formula around, as far as I'm aware. For that, I respect both games.
To be perfectly honest, the only thing that Saints Row 2 actually wins on beyond any shadow of a doubt is the map itself. Everything else about the game feels so inferior. The character customization is really nothing special aside from the clothing options. The gameplay is...well...just another piss-poor free-roam game. The writing-style's quality is strictly up to personal preference. I feel as though most fans flock to Saints Row 2 solely for the feeling of appearing "retro." That, or their opinion stems from nothing other than nostalgia-bias. (which for FUCK'S SAKE is a huge problem with a majority of humanity's judgement process. It's so unbelievably illogical for anyone to determine quality solely over which provided more memories, yet it's a common and widely accepted train of thought that really ought to be extinguished.)
Still, this is just my interpretation, my personal opinion. There are still plenty of fans who have their own legitimate reasons as to why they prefer the previous titles, and I cannot fault them for that. (It's just the people who have no real logic behind their thoughts that get me wound up.) With that, I am just giving my own reasons as to why the original poster as well as myself and thousands of other fans may prefer the more recent installments to the franchise. I expect the opposing fanbase not to fault us for such.

Like I said previously, the resources are used differently. I could just as well say that the gameplay of Saints Row 2 is lazy, and that argument could still end up counter-intuitive to either side depending on your perspective. Both have their own little elements of "laziness," but I don't view it as such. I feel as though Saints Row 4 was a giant risk. They changed the engine and the style entirely. Would it not be easier to just continue running with the same template? Ergo, it isn't lazy, rather it's a questionable decision. It spawned a split in the fanbase.
While I do agree that Saints Row 3 and 4 do not fit well with the tone of 1 and 2, I was never a fan of the first two to begin with. I vastly prefer 3 and 4 as their own individual games. You're right. Perhaps Volition should write each era as their own individual canon with references to the other.

In all seriousness I hated Saints Row 4 and I feel like I wasted money when I pre-ordered saints row the third, it felt like a reskinned shittier version of red faction guerilla. I didn't like the games right off the bat and I thought they would grow on me but they haven't, I'm not gonna say the older ones were better but I think they took Saints Row and gave it aids. I like the way it plays in the newer ones but they could've been executed better.

I actually agree with everything here. The only things about 2 that I find better are more clothing options and enemies don't completely disappear after territorial defeat. Everything else about the later games was better. If you want a serious game, get off you're needy ass high horse, and go play Sleeping Dogs or GTAV. Gameplay > everything else
I will also say SR4's idea for heat sucked too. I love the alien onslaugh, but the concept of the wardens annoyed me. Cause shit tons of destruction and kill aliens > warden shows up > all other enemy units go poof > heat completely dies when warden is destroyed. ...NO!
In all honesty, I think SR3 was my favorite of the series. The super powers are alright, but the mech is still easily the best part about SR4.
