Just bought this beauty and can't wait to learn more about it! Maybe do a video on how to get Alex Lifesons tone using this. Or Steven Stevenson's tone. Thanks for the show and tell!!
Awesome! Yeah, the modulations and delays are easily the winners in this unit. Not sure digital distortion had incubated quite long enough to hatch at this point in gear history.
@cliftonwright7081 That's a super friendly way of saying "duly noted - moving on..." 😁 Any plans on doing other eighties stuff? Or rack gear? I'd love to see (and hear) you pick apart a Rocktron Chameleon or Voodu Valve
Good demo! . I worked for Roland UK late eighties in admin so am very fond of their kit. Modulation is usually a winner, but distortion poor. Their Gs6 was pretty good though, had great Frank Dunnery tones from It Bites. So if you see that give it a go, best wishes
Great video, mostly for the playing. Got kind of an understated Shawn Lane esque arua about yorself. Have that unit still, got it in ca 90-91 and it was, and still is crazy. The effects are extreme and need to be dialed down. It is quite hard to make ideal useful sounds, lots of tinkering. On the other hand, extreme sounds come easy. Keep up the good work!
Digital into digital...blech...try it into a stereo tube power amp into two 212 cabs with celestions. Instant super 80's-90's rock. Thats what I ran on stage thru the 90's. KILLER.
I used to have one of these. Never used a GP-8, so I had no way to compare the two. I think the people who say this was not an improvement are the analog purists, as the 8 was analog and this unit was digital. And yes, the noise suppressor was kinda crucial as the noise was overwhelming.
Nice, yeah I have a few of those! They work better for how I play as a replacement for a pedal drawer and as a midi to analog interface for the controller jacks on a preamp or head
6:45 What piece did you play here? The rack effect sound is good, but your playing is truly incredible. Along with sound videos, please upload more guitar playing lesson videos.
Thank you for the kind words, it’s just a little adaptation of the old country tune “Empty Glass”. I’ll try and crank out another lesson soon, thank you for the feedback!
👍❤I ENJOY YOUR VIDS 🎸I RECEIVE MY GP-16 ON MONDAY FROM JAPAN. 4 WHAT I CAN HEAR ON THIS VIDEO THE DISTORTION SOUNDS R BETTER THEN ANY OTHER RACK UNITS EVER INVENTED, I'LL FIND OUT SOON ENOUGH, CHEERS BRO 👍
Durch Dein Postbhabe ich mir gestern ein GP16 mit FC100 und EV5 gekauft. Ich bin gespannt wie sich das GP8 mit meiner Fender Highway One II sowie meinem GallienKrueger MLE vertraegt
Really nice to see this. I have one of these. I bought it new sometime around 1991 and still have it but I need to get it fixed, the display panel doesn't show any text. I bought it to go with a Roland GR-50 guitar synth (which I also still have and it still runs just fine, a Roland D series synth played from a guitar). My one complaint about the GP-16 is how dry and digital it sounds (to me). It reminds me a lot of the first generation of CD players to get to the stores, they were a bit too clean, dry and digital.
Yeah, I can hear that. It’s kind of glassy and sterile in some ways. There’s definitely some fun soundscaping that can be done with a medium amount of effort but I generally prefer more specialized gear over all-in-one stuff.
Great video and device. The GP-16 is flexible enough for serious use even today. If you feel like donating to a charity, why not send me one of these instead?
🤓rare panel : 1 input ....2 A outs & 2 B outs ????? HOW DO U HOOK IT UP TO OTHER RACK UNITS ?.....SHOULDN'T BE.... A OUT / IN & B OUT / IN ???? CONFUSING.....ANY ADVICE, PLEASE & THX 😮
Honestly I’d look up the manual in google, probably pretty easy to find. I don’t remember off the top of my head but I think there’s a way to run the two blocks separately
For this demo I just went guitar into the GP16 then stereo out into my Helix with two clean amps in stereo so it was more like how people used it in the early 90s
You know I had a GP8, it had come loaded with way too much of everything, at the time I was doing studio work so we were told to use the mantra… Less is more we were told go back to your guitar heroes of the 60s and 70s they didn’t use any of that crap and you don’t need it either… Now if you get a paying gig and they say I want a lot of chorus I want a lot of the way Alotta… Horrible flange then you do it… but I actually found when you pull all of those parameters down it didn’t sound bad still didn’t sound like you were going straight into a fender twin which I had and there was no comparison to. Fast forward to the next purchase was a GP16, A bit better specs, could more horrible crap… again if you pull this parameters down it actually sounded better because it had better specs… I can’t think of any reason I would use one of those today other than the fact I was stupid enough to buy another one so goofing around at home it’s fun I think it’s the same though if you’re using a helix, Core or the neural DSP, Lesismore… By the way you’re a smoke and Guitar Player
The GP8 at least has a fully analog through signal and is the closest to a standard pedal board full of 80s Boss stuff; with a mix of mostly analog circuits (except for the delay and chorus) and digitally controlled “pots” inside. The 16 is fully DSP based and suffers from it in the compression and drive sections. The effects are fun though. They’re both mostly just fun like you mentioned. I would actually still use a GP8 in a small rack rig in place of a pedal drawer and dial in, again as you mentioned, those more restrained boss comp and overdrive tones for meat and potatoes stuff. The autowah straight up rages when you get it dialed in though. Way better than the Touch Wah pedal. Thanks for the kind words friend, I enjoy the tech talk!
Hello I'm having a problem which I would like you to help with. Please. I have a gp16. I've had it for a while. I found a fc100 mk2 foot controller which plugs into the gp16. So no problem right? Ok the fc100 has a bypass switch. It turns the effect on and off. Right. So you want to have it off when you power up the unit right. No. It doesn't do that. Ok so you want the bypass to be off when you change the patch ok no it doesn't do that. Am I missing something? Ok also it loads the patch right away so you have to "know "what your patch is before you play it. Hell do I know. Also the foottconyroller doesn't change midi channels so basically I have to have all my fx units on the same channel to change patches. Also it has an 8x8 thing not 100 64. I hope I'm not boring you...
Hey there, I do have an fc100 but I actually haven’t used it yet because I haven’t found the proprietary rrc cable yet. I find all this stuff in thrift stores in Japan so sometimes it takes me a while to find things like power supplies and cables. As far as I know, most foot controllers that are specific to a unit have a specific set up process in the unit’s system settings to make sure they’re properly synced. In the case of the Yamaha foot controller I have that works with the FX series boxes, you have to arrange which patches get the first few midi program changes, like the top 8 spaces on MySpace lol. I’ll look through the manual again (free online) and see if I can figure out what’s up.
@@cliftonwright7081 With some tweaking, you should be able to dial in the notorious Prince flanger sound in the beginning and end of Computer Blue. Prince used several Boss/Roland products in the early-mid '80's. Not my thing, but he certainly carved out his own sound with that.
I own a GP-16. You didn't even access/demonstrate the rest of the OD/distortion units. Disappointed. You also didn't review the effect options available--there are a lot. DISAPPOINTED...
Yes! Send guitar into the input of one unit then go out of the effects send into the front of the next unit. Then go out of the effects send of that unit to the front end of your preamp or amp. This will put all of the dry tone shaping blocks of both units in series with each other. Next, go from your effects loop out of your preamp or amp into the effects return of the first unit then out of the main mono output of that unit into the effects return of the next unit and out of its main output to the effects return of your amp or preamp. This will put the wet effects of both units in series with each other and in the loop of your amp so they operate cleanly after the preamp gain stages.
This dude is so good at guitar

Hahaha I recommend just skipping to the last couple minutes if you wanna hear that trash distortion and some Paul Gilbert licks
Hi. I'm here to tell you. I just got this last night, A Roland GP16 and I love it. I'm gonna get the GP8 so I can have both
Beautiful chord melody playing
Thank you!

I brought my GP-16 back out. I use delay and modulation effects in the effects loop of my Blackstar MKII Club 40. It sounds great.
Awesome! Yeah, the modulations and delays are easily the winners in this unit. Not sure digital distortion had incubated quite long enough to hatch at this point in gear history.
This unit deserves a much deeper dive I think. This was am awesome video in the "scratching the surface" category though!
